00:00After having had many C-suite jobs and I was trying to decide what to do after I
00:05retired from corporate life, the idea of entrepreneurship was not first and
00:10foremost in my mind. However, I have been known to wear some hair, okay, and wear
00:18it well. In fact, when I was doing the Apple Music Keynote, one of the topics
00:25that was talked about, aside from the new product, was my hair, because I decided
00:29to wear it in my big curly afro. And thank you, sis, as I should. Thank you. And it
00:37was interesting because there was so much talk about how I show up in the office.
00:42You know, it's like you're expected to look a certain way when you are first. And a
00:47lot of times what that means for most of us, especially as I'm looking around, is
00:52that we're not supposed to look like the way we look. You know, we have to mirror
00:57the way that other people look. And by other people, I usually mean white men. And
01:03that can be very constricting. I know it sounds like a superficial because it's, you
01:08know, what you're wearing on the outside, but it absolutely affects what happens on
01:12the inside. It's like wearing shoes that are too tight, right? It's like you put them
01:16on, you think they're cute, you walk around for three minutes, and then it starts to
01:20pinch you. And then all of a sudden you're upset. That's what it's like for most of us
01:24every single day when we go to a job or we're in an environment in which we're not
01:29comfortable, where we have to pretend to be somebody else. Imagine that somebody else
01:34gets to show up exactly as they are in their full freedom. And you might be smarter, you
01:39might be faster, you might be better, but that shoe is too tight. And therefore you can't
01:44move the way you're supposed to. And so the idea of showing up fully as yourself is so
01:50important. And so as I walk through my corporate life and my corporate experiences, I just became
01:55fuller and fuller and fuller, you know, until I was showing everything that I had, which then
02:01made me what I am.
