Gleaming the Cube is a 1989 crime thriller starring a young Christian Slater as Brian Kelly, an Orange County skateboarder who turns vigilante after his adopted Vietnamese brother is murdered. Directed by Graeme Clifford with skate legend Stacy Peralta as technical advisor, it’s a cult favorite for its 80s skateboarding footage and “skateboard vigilante” plot. The title refers to pushing your limits to the edge.
Brian Kelly is a 17-year-old skater whose life is skating, ditching school, and clashing with his parents. His only real connection is his adopted Vietnamese brother Vinh, who works for the Vietnamese Anti-Communist Relief Fund.
Vinh discovers the organization is a front for smuggling illegal weapons to Vietnam. When he investigates further, he’s caught by the owners, Ed Lawndale and Colonel Trac, and accidentally killed. Police rule it a suicide, but Brian doesn’t buy it.
With help from LAPD Detective Al Lucero and Vinh’s girlfriend Tina, Brian uses his skating skills and street connections to investigate. He uncovers the weapons smuggling ring and seeks revenge, leading to a chase and confrontation. The film blends skateboarding sequences with a Cold War-era conspiracy plot.
