00:00Where did that come from?
00:02Did you know that the name Pepsi was actually taken from a drink called Brad's Drink?
00:07Yeah, really.
00:09Let me tell you the story.
00:10Back in 1893, a pharmacist named Caleb Bradham invented a carbonated beverage
00:17with a unique flavour created by mixing sugar, water, syrup, vanilla, citrus oils,
00:25nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and cola nut extract.
00:30He sold this drink in his drugstore and it became very popular.
00:34In fact, it became so popular that Caleb had to open a bottling plant just to keep up with demand
00:42and he decided to market his new business with the name Pepsi-Cola,
00:48taking the name from the digestive aid Pepsin.
00:51But no one knows exactly why he chose that particular name
00:55other than the fact that Pepsin contains the letters.
00:58Pep and Seh, which sound like Pepsi.
01:03Now, as time went on, the formula changed hands a few times.
01:07First, the recipe was purchased by a man named Charles A. Guth.
01:12Then it passed to his son-in-law, John Button.
01:15And finally, in 1961, the brand was sold to Donald M. Kendall, who still owns it today.
01:23However, throughout all these years, the name remained the same,
01:27even though the formula changed many times as well.
