00:00A 5.6 earthquake was registered on Sunday in eastern Cuba and was also felt in other
00:16Caribbean countries such as Haiti and the Bahamas. The network of stations of the Cuban
00:21National Seismological Service registered the earthquake which was felt at 7am local
00:25time located at the coordinates 20.16 degrees north latitude and 74.44 degrees west
00:30longitude at a depth of 7.1 kilometers and with a magnitude of 5.6 located 24 kilometers southeast
00:36of the Guantanamara Locality of Emias. The authorities of seismological services remain on alert and are
00:42monitoring possible aftershocks. To date no victims or significant material damage have been reported.
00:48They also urged the population to continue to follow official media reports given the possible
00:52risk of high-intensity aftershocks.
01:00Let us remember that Cuba experienced numerous perceptible earthquakes in 2025 although most
01:05of them were of low intensity and did not pose serious risks. In addition, seismic events are
01:09monitored by the National Seismological Research Center as part of its national surveillance program
01:14for possible aftershocks, risks and tsunamis. The eastern part of Cuba is historically the most
01:21seismically active in the country due to the presence of the Oriente Fault, part of the boundary between
01:26the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates.
01:34And the Cuban government announced that it has installed a photovoltaic system
01:38at the seismological observatory due to the energy situation facing the country. The initiative aims to
01:43ensure the continuous power supply of the earthquake and tsunami warning systems through renewable energy.
01:48After the installation of this system, all stations in the National Seismological Service Network
01:52are now powered by renewable sources with continuous monitoring.
