00:00It is Friday, it's 5.52pm and it is the end of the first week with my new clients.
00:11Alistair and Margot Hartnell.
00:14They say that coming here is the last roll of the dice for them.
00:17They had been on the cusp of getting a divorce.
00:20Walk forward. Turn right. Turn right!
00:23Turn left. No, no, wait. No, sorry. That's my...
00:27For God's sake, Alistair!
00:29Love has been replaced by hostility.
00:32You're useless at this! That's enough!
00:34Sorry, darling.
00:35All trust has gone.
00:36For sake!
00:37Sorry. Sorry!
00:38It's okay. It's okay.
00:39Compounded by the fact that they seem unable to communicate in a meaningful and a reciprocal way.
00:46I feel unheard when I talk to you about how I'm feeling.
00:52Well, often when you do want to talk, I've got work on my mind and that's important too.
01:02So it's just a case of bad timing, that's all.
01:05Their marriage doesn't make sense to them anymore.
01:08Over the course of the coming weeks, I'd like to see if we can retrace the steps that led to this situation.
01:15See if we can work out how they got here.
01:17Next we have Luke and Stacey Warbur.
01:21I believe the fault lines don't run as deep with them.
01:24I'm grateful for how patient you are.
01:27And that you're here with me now, doing this.
01:31Because I know I'm not giving you what you need.
01:35That's so sweet, bro.
01:37On the surface, they have a loving marriage.
01:40But now can we try taking each other's hands, please?
01:45And maintaining that same eye contact.
01:48By their own admission, there are significant intimacy issues.
01:51Why can't you do this?
01:53Uh...
01:55I'm sorry.
01:57I'm sorry, sorry. Could I take five?
01:59It's okay.
02:00Of course.
02:01It's okay, Luke.
02:04Take your time.
02:06I mean...
02:07It's okay.
02:08It's all part of the process.
02:10It's Friday, it's the beginning of the weekend now.
02:13But Monday will be a big day.
02:15I have exciting plans.
02:17I think that there could be a real breakthrough.
02:23Hello.
02:24Darling.
02:26Wine's good.
02:29This looks nice, doesn't it?
02:30Yeah.
02:31Hi, everyone. Hi.
02:33I just wanted to say thank you very much for all your hard work
02:37and your commitment this week.
02:39You should be very proud of yourselves.
02:41There's more for us to do next week.
02:44But for now, enjoy your evening.
02:49Right, bon appetit.
02:51Cheers, everyone.
02:52Cheers.
02:55Cheers.
02:56Cheers.
02:57Wow.
02:58Cheers.
02:59Cheers.
03:20I just feel like every single thing I say is wrong.
03:22Every word, every utterance.
03:24every utterance she pounces on it like a wild animal yeah and she certainly has a way with
03:30her words your missus i thought you'd never ask so many duty-free that's kira's stuff
03:42can't still be swimming can she
03:54so
04:11so
04:24My ex wanted me to try that kind of thing.
04:53Couples therapy, not my cup of tea.
04:56You don't think it could be good for a relationship?
04:59Opening up more and sharing with each other?
05:03Nah.
05:04Ah, crime scene.
05:07Inspector, I don't think you should wear that to the crime scene.
05:11Why not?
05:12Because it's got I heart St. Marie on the front of it.
05:18Hm?
05:20Still haven't gotten your clothes back then.
05:23I must have left 50 messages for Solomon.
05:25This is the only shirt he didn't take.
05:26But I've got a mate from the Met to call in a favour,
05:29and I've got him to triangulate his phone for me.
05:32That's a very good use of their resources.
05:34Hey, listen.
05:35He stole from me, and that is a crime.
05:40Inspector, I just think you should take the hat off.
05:42Yeah, all right.
05:43It's all right.
05:53Victim is Kira Mayhew.
05:5542 years old, fully qualified clinical therapist.
05:59Ran a couples retreat here.
06:01Cars of death looks like a drowning.
06:03Went for a swim at 7 o'clock yesterday evening, and at 9 o'clock,
06:07two fishermen came across a body about 100 metres out,
06:10directly opposite this spot.
06:12They've watched over the body until the paramedics arrived.
06:16Who else was here last night?
06:18About six people in total.
06:19Four residents, two staff, the chef and the waitress.
06:22There's some bruising around her neck and shoulders.
06:25Looks like finger marks.
06:26Paramedics say they're recent.
06:28More likely from someone forcing her down under the water.
06:31They reckon it's murder.
06:33That's why they called us.
06:34So what?
06:35She swam out to sea, and somebody was with her and did this.
06:39Or maybe somebody was waiting for her out there on a boat.
06:41Inspector, what would you say if I told you
06:44I just found a bingo ball at the crime scene?
06:47I'd say, have you actually found a bingo ball at the crime scene?
06:51And I would say, yes.
06:52Yes, I did find a bingo ball at the crime scene.
06:5513.
06:57Unlocking for some.
07:00I mean, it probably doesn't have much to do with Kira May,
07:03who's murdered, all right?
07:05We don't know yet.
07:06Let's bag it.
07:07Oh, OK.
07:08The bingo ball's officially evidenced now.
07:10Bag in the bingo ball.
07:12All right.
07:13Sergeant Fletcher, you talk to the staff.
07:15Officer Rose, see if there's any security cameras in the place.
07:19And DS Thomas, let's talk to the guests.
07:22Oh, I'll keep holding back.
07:27Sorry, did you just say murder?
07:30Well, I thought it was an accident.
07:31Well, it wasn't.
07:33So we need to ask you where you all were between the hours of seven and nine last night.
07:36Are you saying we're suspects?
07:38When did you last see Kira Mayhew?
07:40Before dinner, we were having some aperitifs and she came and told us to have a nice night.
07:44Enjoy your evening.
07:48What time was that?
07:49Just before seven.
07:50She went for a swim and didn't see her again until she was, was, um...
07:56Dead?
07:59Just say it.
08:02And was that a regular thing, her going for a swim at that time?
08:05Seemed to be, like, most evenings.
08:08Kira said it was her own therapy.
08:10Getting into the sea after a long day, she found it restorative.
08:14And during the two hours between you seeing her and her body being found, you were...
08:20We were all together having dinner.
08:21Look, it wasn't one of us, okay?
08:26Nobody told us that we were going to be grilled like this.
08:29None of us have even been to bed.
08:31Mama took a sleeping pill.
08:36Don't apologise for me, Alastair.
08:38You know I hate it when you do that.
08:39Sorry, dear.
08:40And don't call me dear, either.
08:42No, of course not.
08:43Sorry.
08:44For God.
08:45Okay.
08:46Well, if you think of anything, let us know.
08:50God help us.
08:56I spoke with the staff who can alibi each other for the time of the murder.
09:04They were preparing dinner between seven and nine.
09:07You think you're listening?
09:09I'm listening.
09:10Just checking, sir.
09:11What did they say about the victim?
09:13Well, that she was a decent boss.
09:15Always paid them on time.
09:16Was friendly.
09:17Any idea you'd want to harm her?
09:18No.
09:19They reckon she didn't really know anyone here.
09:21Never saw her go out much.
09:23Kept herself to herself.
09:24I checked her phone.
09:26All her texts and all her emails work related.
09:30Apart from her mum back in England.
09:32How's she doing?
09:33Not great.
09:34We said we'd speak tomorrow when she might be a little bit calmer.
09:38I found this.
09:39Date and time is yesterday.
09:445.52 in the afternoon.
09:48That's just over an hour before her swim.
09:53It's the weekend now, but Monday will be a big day.
10:02I have exciting plans and I think that there could be a real breakthrough.
10:07I have a real breakthrough.
10:09It's the weekend.
10:10I have a real breakthrough.
10:11I have a real breakthrough.
10:12I have a real breakthrough.
10:13I have a real breakthrough.
10:14I have a real breakthrough.
10:16If I can draw out the truth, the fallout would be truly devastating.
10:22And only a couple of hours later, she's been murdered.
10:29You're thinking one of the guests here did it?
10:32I'm thinking maybe one of them did.
10:37On one hand, all the four guests were having dinner together at the time of Keira Mayhu's murder.
10:43Oh, look, there are only two cameras in the resort.
10:46Just before 7 o'clock, Keira Mayhu goes for a swim.
10:49But on the other hand, all the guests leave the table once during the evening.
10:54So, in theory, it could have been any one of them.
10:57Alright, um, now here.
11:00At 18 minutes past 7, Mr. Hartnell goes to his bedroom to get his glasses.
11:05And in here, 7.46, Stacey Waba goes to the bathroom to check her makeup.
11:11And at 8.03, Mrs. Hartnell goes to grab her shawl.
11:15And after that, at 8.30, Luke Waba goes to his bedroom to get a bottle of rum.
11:20So, each of them had opportunity to kill the victim during the dinner?
11:26Except, on the other hand, no one leaves the table for more than two to three minutes.
11:32And they all returned dry as a bone.
11:35Okay, so how did one of them manage to leave the dinner table,
11:38run down to the beach, get themselves somehow out to sea 100 meters, drown Keira Mayhu.
11:45Then come all the way back, dry off,
11:48before returning to the table in less than a few minutes.
11:52Well, that's just not possible.
11:56Alright, Sebastian.
12:08I'll read the victim's notebook.
12:10You make us start listening to these tapes.
12:12Focus on the ones recorded since the four suspects arrived.
12:15These tapes are teeny tiny.
12:19Look, they make me look like a giant.
12:22Says the giants.
12:23Yes.
12:24So, printed the victim's schedule the day of her murder.
12:28Trust exercises in the morning.
12:30Sounds fun.
12:31Lunch, followed by one-to-one sessions in the afternoon with Stacey Walbert,
12:36then Alistair Hartnell.
12:38Inspector, I came to check in on the murder case.
12:42The minister gets nervous when one of our resorts is hit by a crime.
12:47I'd like to reassure her it's in hand.
12:50Yes, sir.
12:52We're currently working on the basis that one of the four residents did it.
12:56We just need to work out which one it was, and how they did it.
12:59And why.
13:00So, pretty much everything.
13:03You look smart, sir.
13:08Going somewhere nice?
13:09Yacht Club.
13:10Lobster night.
13:11Lobster night, eh?
13:15Lobster night, eh?
13:17That's why you're looking so snappy.
13:19You know, snappy.
13:23Like, claws.
13:26Lobster claws.
13:27I get the joke, Inspector.
13:29I just didn't find it very funny.
13:34Enjoy your evenings?
13:35You too, sir.
13:36Snappy.
13:37Like claws, you know.
13:41Nope.
13:42I need to get this.
13:44Hello, mate.
13:48Excuse me, Commissioner.
13:51Anton Mousset.
13:54How long has it been since we last...
13:57Crossed paths?
13:58Or were you going to say, crossed swords?
14:01I hadn't decided before you got me off.
14:06How can I help you, Mr. Mousset?
14:08Anton, please.
14:09We're going to publish an article about you, Commissioner.
14:13And I want to give you the right to respond.
14:16Here is a draft copy of the piece.
14:22Let me know when you're ready to talk.
14:29Inspector, that was your contact at the Met, wasn't it?
14:32You know where Solomon is?
14:34Palm Beach Hotel.
14:35I'm coming with you.
14:52What's it like?
14:54It's something I could easily live without.
14:57But once you have your own private jet, it's hard to give that up, you know?
15:01I love it, ladies.
15:04Here's for a fun night, right?
15:10Solomon!
15:11Mervyn!
15:12Oh!
15:13I'm just seeing you here, man.
15:15We're just talking about you.
15:16Come, come, come, come, come, come.
15:18Meet Tashel and Tashana.
15:21This is my brother, would you believe?
15:24Murphy!
15:25We're half-brothers.
15:26Where's my stuff?
15:27You stole from me and I want my things back.
15:29I never stole anything.
15:31He gets confused sometimes.
15:32Had a bump to his head a few years back.
15:34Solomon!
15:35I'm not joking around.
15:37You get me my things now, or I arrest you.
15:40It's your choice.
15:41Okay, man.
15:42I understand.
15:44Let me just...
15:46Oh, God!
15:53Sir, are you okay?
15:55I'm fine!
15:56Come and get him!
15:57Oh!
15:58Oh!
15:59Oh!
16:00Oh!
16:02Oh!
16:03Oh!
16:04Oh!
16:05Oh!
16:06Oh!
16:07Oh!
16:08Oh!
16:09Oh!
16:10Oh!
16:11Oh!
16:12Oh!
16:13Oh!
16:14Oh!
16:15Oh!
16:16Oh!
16:16Now you can have assaulting the police officers to theft and breaking and entering.
16:25Mervyn, my brother, please don't do this to me.
16:28I'm sorry, all right?
16:30I just...
16:30I really needed the money.
16:33I'm in debt.
16:35And it's to the kind of person you don't much want to be in debt to.
16:40I'm sorry I let you down.
16:41I just...
16:42I didn't know what else to do.
16:46I just need my stuff back, Sol.
16:4924 hours.
16:52Otherwise, I'm pressing charges. Do you understand?
16:55Appreciate it, Mom.
17:11So, we dusted the bingo ball for prints, sir, like you requested.
17:15But got nothing from it.
17:17Oh. Oh, well. Worth a try, eh?
17:21Right. What else we got?
17:23We've done background on both couples.
17:27The Hartnells live in Islington in London.
17:30He's a barrister.
17:31She runs a luxury interior design business.
17:34Oh, very Islington.
17:35They did a brief spell of grief counselling with another therapist shortly after their daughter died.
17:41She was only 17.
17:44Seems their marriage has been struggling ever since.
17:47What about the Warbers?
17:48Also live in London.
17:50Luke works in finance, earns well, has been married to Stacey for three years.
17:56I've been reading the victim's notes on both couples.
17:59She records a lot after her sessions with them, especially on the dictaphone.
18:03But it's okay.
18:05Officer Rose is working on it.
18:07Yes.
18:08Yes, I am.
18:09I am totally on top of it.
18:11So, don't you worry, Inspector.
18:14It seems the Warbers came out here because they've been having intimacy issues.
18:19It's been 18 months since they were last intimate with each other.
18:25When you say intimate, you mean intimate?
18:28Yes.
18:29And according to the notes, the issue is entirely on Luke's side.
18:34And in one of their last sessions, Miss Mayhew got him to admit why he was like this.
18:40Go on.
18:4118 months ago, Luke was unfaithful.
18:44He had a one-night thing.
18:45Naughty, naughty boy.
18:47Mm-hmm.
18:48With him wife's sister.
18:50Cha-cha.
18:51Oh, sorry, what?
18:53Mm-hmm.
18:54And ever since, he's been wracked with guilt and shame.
18:56Why?
18:57He's been a busy, busy man.
18:59I mean, that explains why he can't do the business.
19:02Mm-hmm.
19:03Now, Kira told him that he needs to confront it, that he can't ignore it anymore.
19:11She was suggesting he tell Stacey.
19:13I think she knew their marriage couldn't move forward based on a betrayal like that.
19:17Is that what Kira Mayhew was referring to when she said...
19:22My instinct on this is that a lie is being told.
19:26So Luke killed her to silence her?
19:30Stop the truth coming out?
19:31It's a cliche, isn't it?
19:38Saying something's the biggest mistake of your life.
19:41How did it happen?
19:42Oh, I don't know.
19:43I just...
19:45People flirt, you know?
19:48With Stacey, we go for a night out and the blokes swarm in.
19:52I mean, you've seen her.
19:53She's gorgeous.
19:54She could have anyone if she wanted.
19:55And what happened with me and Cheryl, her sister, it felt like I was...
20:02Like I was proving myself that I've still got it too, you know?
20:06But something in you must have wanted to come clean because you admitted it to Kira Mayhew.
20:11I thought she'd help.
20:12In what way?
20:14Absolve me of the guilt if I opened up.
20:17I think that's a priest you're after.
20:19But all she said was that the marriage couldn't survive if it was built on a betrayal like that.
20:25She's normally so calm and measured, but with that...
20:28It really bothered her.
20:31Like she wasn't going to let it go.
20:34And that's what worried you.
20:36Panicked you that she would tell Stacey herself.
20:39And then you'd lose your gorgeous wife completely.
20:41But you weren't going to let that happen.
20:43And that is why you murdered Kira Mayhew.
20:45No.
20:46No.
20:47That's why I've come to you.
20:48Because I know what it looks like.
20:51But it wasn't me who killed her.
20:54I swear to you.
20:58All right.
21:00That's all for now.
21:15What a moron.
21:17Sir?
21:22Inspector.
21:24Postmortem's in.
21:25Confirms what we thought.
21:27Water in the victim's lungs confirmed she died due to droning.
21:31Finger marks on her shoulders and neck suggest she was forced under the water.
21:37But how did the killer manage to do it?
21:39To leave from the dinner table here, run down to the beach, drown Kira, then get back to the dinner table, seemingly with not a spot of water on them.
21:49And in just a few minutes.
21:51And how does this figure into all of this?
21:53Why was it at our crime scene?
21:55You do know things get washed up on beaches all the time.
21:59Yeah, but a bingo ball?
22:04Officer Rose.
22:07Officer Rose.
22:10Officer Rose.
22:12Huh?
22:13Have you made any progress with the tapes yet?
22:15No progress as such, but I assure you, when I get something, you'll be the first to know.
22:21Inspector, I just spoke with the victim's mom, Sandra.
22:24Go on.
22:24To this day, her mom doesn't know why Kira left the UK.
22:29She didn't just want a change of scene?
22:31No, it was totally out of the blue.
22:34Overnight, Kira left her fiancé, announced that she was setting up a practice abroad, never even kept in touch with any of her friends.
22:40So it got me thinking, could Kira Mayhew's murder be connected to something that happened back in the UK?
22:51Also, sir, Kira's mom spoke with her just before that swim, while she was heading down to the beach.
22:58And she's...
23:02Officer Rose, see what's going on out there, will you?
23:10Anyway, she said Kira seemed distracted.
23:15Distant, even.
23:16Her mom said it was like she wasn't even present.
23:19Inspector, some big-headed brother in our sports car is asking for you.
23:28So, you got my stuff, then?
23:36Not in a physical sense, no.
23:39What's that supposed to mean?
23:40Been a busy day.
23:41Bit of business here, bit of business there.
23:43Always somewhere I got to be in Salomon land.
23:48But, I know who has your thing, so...
23:53Jump in, and let's go get them.
23:58So, this is where all my stuff is.
24:06Nice.
24:08It's Myrtle Chastanets, please.
24:10You ever come across her?
24:11No.
24:12Funnily enough.
24:13She's the kind of person you go to if you have some things that sell it, maybe other people, maybe less...
24:17So, she fenced your stolen goods?
24:19It's not for me to put a label on what...
24:21So, that's a yes.
24:23We'll have you reunited with your stuff in no time.
24:26She's a very amenable woman.
24:30Who is it?
24:31Myrtle?
24:32It's Salomon Clark, remember me?
24:34Got my brother here with me.
24:36It was his stuff I sold you, and...
24:40We were wondering if we could get it back.
24:41No!
24:42No, clear up!
24:44Myrtle!
24:45Honey!
24:46Don't you honey me, monster!
24:47She's a lot more vexed than I remember her being before.
24:50Myrtle!
24:50I'm going to cut to the chase.
24:52You are currently in possession of items illegally taken from my home.
24:58Myrtle!
25:03Think she's tinkering about it.
25:04What the...
25:09What's she do that for?
25:12What is it stuff?
25:15It's in my eyes!
25:17It's burning!
25:18Hot sauce.
25:18God!
25:19Why'd she pull hot sauce over me?
25:21I don't know, man.
25:22Oh!
25:23But she got that meat.
25:24God!
25:25I'm not funny.
25:26Hehehehe!
25:27What?
25:29No!
25:29Tell me what you're playing at!
25:31How much hot sauce has she got?
25:32Why has she got so much of it?
25:33I think it's some bullet teeth that got going on!
25:35And if there's no sent your packet, then I will set Tiberius on you!
25:38Who's Tiberius?
25:41Feels like we come at a bad time.
25:43Maybe we should come back another day!
25:48They're threatening to publish this article.
25:53Doesn't hold back, does it?
25:56After everything I've done for this island,
26:00this is the thanks I receive.
26:03And the fact that Anton Busset is sharpening the knives is of no surprise to me.
26:10You and he have history?
26:12Because I have no respect for his gossip-mongering rag.
26:16This isn't journalism.
26:19This is attention-rabbing rhetoric.
26:22What?
26:22This island petitioned to get you your job back.
26:33And you walked away without any explanation, like you didn't care.
26:37And now, months later, you come back as if nothing happened.
26:42I do care.
26:45You know that.
26:47But others don't.
26:49All they know is that the commissioner of police abandoned them.
26:55It's up to you to change their minds.
26:59Oh, my eyes won't stop singing, man.
27:02Tell me about it.
27:03The sun should go down into my trousers.
27:05I'm telling you, Mervyn, there's hot sauce in place.
27:11There's hot sauce is not supposed to go, Mervyn, man.
27:21That's some mighty fiery sauce Mervyn's been cooking up.
27:25Look at us.
27:26We're covered in this stuff.
27:28Like a couple of chicken wings.
27:35You're a liability, Saul.
27:50You know that.
27:53My life has been turned upside down since you came into it.
27:56Yeah, I kind of have that effect.
28:01I can't live like that, man.
28:06I'm a detective inspector.
28:08Do you understand that?
28:12And I need my clothes back.
28:14And I need to not be chasing around after you.
28:17This is not how I...
28:22I'm sorry, Mervyn.
28:31I need to be chasing around after you.
28:32I need to be chasing around after you.
28:33I need to be chasing around after you.
28:34I need to be chasing around after you.
28:35I need to be chasing around after you.
28:36I need to be chasing around after you.
28:37I need to be chasing around after you.
28:38I need to be chasing around after you.
28:39I need to be chasing around after you.
28:40I need to be chasing around after you.
28:41I need to be chasing around after you.
28:42I need to be chasing around after you.
28:43I need to be chasing around after you.
28:44I need to be chasing around after you.
28:45I need to be chasing around after you.
28:46I need to be chasing around after you.
28:47I need to be chasing around after you.
28:48I need to be chasing around after you.
28:49I need to be chasing around after you.
28:50I need to be chasing around after you.

32:29Good morning, Clarence.
32:30Good morning.
32:31Ah.
32:32How long was the catch this morning?
32:33Wow.
32:34So, so.
32:35So, so?
32:36Let me look.
32:37Let me look.
32:38Let me see.
32:39Take two, Phil.
32:40Okay.
32:41I want that one there.
32:42That big one.
32:43Good morning, Sash.
32:46Morning.
32:47Morning.
32:48Inspector.
32:49I'm here.
32:50We got your message.
32:55So, I was doing a bit of nosing around the old place and, uh, bingo.
33:08Literally.
33:09Oh, so that's where it came from.
33:11Yeah.
33:12Apparently this place used to be a resort for the over 60s.
33:14So, this must have been here since then.
33:16Okay.
33:17So, how do you explain one of those bingo balls ending up on the same beach as our crime scene?
33:23Well, it didn't magic itself there, did it?
33:26Somebody must have taken it from this.
33:28So, we're going to have to dust it for prints.
33:30I could do that for you, sir.
33:32Oh, nice one.
33:35How about you two?
33:36You got something?
33:37So, the tapes Cara Mayhew recorded over the last week, there was 10 hours of it.
33:42And throughout it all, when she talks about Alistair and Margot Hartnell, she doesn't once mention they lost a daughter.
33:49She was only 17.
33:51Seems their marriage has been struggling ever since.
33:57Which was kind of odd, right?
33:59So, we did some digging.
34:01Their daughter Charlotte was killed in a car accident.
34:03A hit and run.
34:04But the person who did it was never found.
34:07All that was known was that it was a female driver.
34:10Only, the hit and run happened outside the family home in Islington.
34:15Cara Mayhew's practice was just over a mile away.
34:20Also, it happened on the 1st of April, 2021.
34:23And Cara Mayhew, she moved over here six weeks later.
34:27Is it possible that...
34:29That's what it was.
34:31Cara was behind a car accident.
34:36That's good work.
34:37A pair of you.
34:38Well done.
34:39You go and get that dusted and we're going to talk to the Hartnells.
34:42We didn't come here because we suspected Cara Mayhew was a woman who killed our daughter.
34:53We came in a last ditch attempt to save our marriage.
34:56Truly, we did.
34:57Then why did you never mention to Miss Mayhew the fact that you lost your daughter?
35:02By your own admission, your relationship problem started five years ago.
35:06At the same time.
35:10We didn't talk about it with her.
35:12Because we never talk about it.
35:14It's easier if we don't.
35:15Margot tries, bless her.
35:18Or used to, you know, to try to get me to open up.
35:20But...
35:22I just can't bear it.
35:27I don't want to lose her.
35:28I want to fix our marriage.
35:30But I can't if I have to churn all that up again.
35:36I'm just not strong enough.
35:37It's all right, my love.
35:50If the Hartnells didn't come here for revenge, then the question still remains.
35:54Why did Cara Mayhew leave London five years ago?
35:56What happened to make her suddenly up sticks and move to the other side of the world?
35:59Stacy.
36:00Please give me a call when you get this.
36:02Just...
36:03Just let me know you're okay.
36:07It's her.
36:09It's Stacy.
36:10I think she's had a meltdown.
36:12I haven't seen her since yesterday.
36:16I think she knew.
36:17I think Cara told her about me and her sister.
36:22Mishnah?
36:23Everything all right?
36:26We'll look into it.
36:38I saw she was upset, crying.
36:44So, I went over.
36:46As soon as she said she was staying at the conference retreat, I warned you.
36:51Couldn't get much from her.
36:53Except...
36:55She didn't want me to phone her husband.
36:58Yeah.
36:59It's hardly surprising.
37:02Sir...
37:05Maybe I should take this one?
37:20Everyone knows, don't they?
37:21Only us.
37:23May I?
37:30Can you tell me when you found out, Mrs. Warbur?
37:35Thursday night.
37:37I went to get some air on the beach and Kira was there.
37:40She'd been drinking.
37:42I've not seen it like that.
37:44She'd always been so composed.
37:46She could hardly stand up, so...
37:48I helped her back to her bungalow.
37:50She was sort of rambling.
37:53Talking about some guy who had betrayed her back in England before she moved here.
37:56I'd been cheating on her.
37:59I got her home and put her on the couch.
38:02And she looked me in the eyes and spoke to me.
38:05Stacey.
38:06Like it really mattered.
38:07Don't be like me.
38:09Don't be Stacey.
38:11There was just something in the way she'd said it.
38:14Then I knew she'd had a one-to-one session with Luke that day and maybe whatever he'd said had like...
38:19triggered her.
38:21It reminded her of her own betrayal, that's why she was drunk.
38:23So when she was asleep, I saw her notebook.
38:33I felt sick.
38:35Couldn't even process it.
38:37Couldn't even breathe.
38:40So I just pretended I didn't know.
38:43Stacey, you've been through a lot in the last couple of days.
38:49If you were in denial, if Kira was pressing you to confront what you'd found out...
38:56No. No, I didn't.
38:58I admit there was all this pent-up stuff inside me, but I didn't kill Kira.
39:03I swear.
39:13All right.
39:15Well, thank you for talking with me, Mr. Shaw.
39:17What did the ex-boyfriend have to say for himself?
39:20The ex-fiancee.
39:21The affair he was having had been going on for three whole years behind Kira's back when she found out.
39:28Wow. That must have flawed her.
39:30I mean, her job is to provide relationship advice when all the time she was blind to a three-year-long deception.
39:36Explains why she suddenly upped and left for another country.
39:39And why Luke's betrayal triggered her so much.
39:42And why she had one or three over the limit.
39:45But...
39:47It still doesn't explain why she was murdered three nights ago.
39:51Inspector, DS Thomas, I think we got something.
40:01Patrick Campbell, therapist. Consultation fee, $150.
40:07She's based in Guadalupe. Specializes in hypnotherapy.
40:11Kira called him Friday afternoon, asking for advice.
40:15He offered to share their conversation as part of our investigation.
40:19On what?
40:21She said a client of hers, Margot Hartnell, had just opened up to her
40:25and was struggling with the memory of an event of her recent past.
40:29Because she had completely blocked it out.
40:31Which, apparently, is not uncommon for people dealing with traumatic experiences.
40:34And according to Mr. Campbell, it's a pretty unorthodox approach for Kira to resort to hypnotherapy so early on in the process.
40:42But she was convinced it was necessary.
40:45So this forgotten memory, do we know what it's to do with?
40:48The night their daughter was killed in a hit and run five years ago.
40:52Mrs Hartnell does not remember a thing about it.
40:55But ever since, she's been growing this feeling of guilt, you know?
41:01Like, maybe she might have done something bad that night.
41:05Wait.
41:07You don't mean...
41:10All that was known was that it was a female driver.
41:14Mrs Hartnell wanted it all off the record.
41:16That's why there was nothing in her notes or recordings.
41:21Right, we need to talk to Mrs Hartnell and that therapist.
41:24We need him here sharpish.
41:26Come on.
41:28Well, at first it was just guilt I felt.
41:32Our grief counsellor said it was normal as a parent to feel a sense of responsibility.
41:37Look, whatever I did five years ago, I want the truth to come out.
41:41If you think I killed Kira Mayhew because I wanted to stop that happening, you're wrong.
41:46She arranged for me to have hypnotherapy today.
41:49Well, that can still happen, Mrs Hartnell.
41:52We've arranged for a hypnotherapist to speak with you, if you feel you're able.
41:57Inspector!
41:59If you wouldn't mind going with Sergeant Fletcher.
42:02Yeah.
42:06I guess all we can do now is wait.
42:16Ah, we're back to the bingo ball.
42:19Inspector!
42:21Sarge, just got back from dusting off the bingo ball machine for prints.
42:26Unfortunately, nothing.
42:33What's up with the Inspector?
42:34Inspector.
42:35Am I alright?
42:39Inspector!
42:40Everything alright, sir?
42:41You've got something?
42:44Sir, what are you doing?
42:49It's a little experiment.
42:51The bingo balls float.
42:52The bingo balls float.
43:08The bingo ball floats.
43:09Yeah.
43:10Okay, so, why take it out of the bingo ball cage thingy and bring it to the sea? To the water's edge?
43:20Was it just to see if it floats?
43:23Or, maybe it's to see where it goes?
43:27In which case...
43:32So, how did one of them manage to leave the dinner table, run down to the beach, somehow get themselves a hundred meters out to sea, drown Keira Mayhew?
43:41None of them left the table for more than two to three minutes at a time.
43:46And was that a regular thing, or going for a swim at that time?
43:50Like, most evenings?
43:51She said Keira seemed distracted.
43:59Of course!
44:01That's why you were there, you little beauty!
44:04Okay, I need to speak to a fisherman, or an oceanographer, ologist type of person, basically anyone who knows the currents in this bay.
44:15Yes, Thomas, I need a toxicology report done on Keira Mayhew.
44:19Officer Rose, I need you to collect some evidence from her office.
44:22But, you know who did it?
44:24I do.
44:26And I know how they managed to drown Keira Mayhew a hundred meters out to sea without even stepping a foot in the water.
44:32Come on!
44:37For those wondering why Margot Hartnell isn't here with us, it's because she's currently with a hypnotherapist.
44:43Doing what she was always supposed to be doing today.
44:46Trying to recover a buried memory of what really happened five years ago.
44:51The night her daughter died.
44:54Why am I telling you this?
44:56Because Margot's therapy sessions were meant to be conducted by Keira Mayhew.
45:02Until somebody tried to stop the truth from coming out.
45:05By murdering her.
45:07Mr. Hartnell.
45:12Me? I did no such thing.
45:15Oh, but you did. I know you did.
45:18But how? I was at dinner when it happened. On dry bloody land.
45:21Yeah, you were. Which is why it was so clever of you.
45:25But now that I've got a better understanding of what's gone on, I believe you created a small window of opportunity in which to commit murder.
45:33But not a hundred meters out at sea.
45:35You drowned Keira Mayhew right outside your own bungalow.
45:40Because from the very start of this case, we've worked on the assumption that as Miss Mayhew's body was discovered 100 meters out at sea in a straight line from where she swam, that's where she was drowned.
45:53But what if actually, when Miss Mayhew went for her evening dip, she preferred to swim along the shore rather than out from it?
46:04That would mean she'd have to swim past your bungalow farther along the beach.
46:10And that would give you opportunity to commit murder.
46:16But when? I told you I was at dinner when it happened.
46:20Yeah, we have security camera footage that shows you leaving the dinner table to get your glasses at 18 minutes past seven.
46:28I was gone, what, a couple of minutes, three minutes at the most.
46:32You're not seriously suggesting I was able to physically drown a fit and healthy woman in that time without getting soaked in water.
46:40Yeah, sounds impossible, right?
46:43But I don't think Miss Mayhew was as fit and healthy as she might normally be.
46:48I believe you sedated her.
46:51We know that your wife uses sleeping pills.
46:55None of us been to bed.
46:57And I took a sleeping pill.
46:59And we also know that you are the last person to have a one-to-one session with Miss Mayhew that day at 5pm.
47:05One-to-one sessions in the afternoon with Stacey Warbur, then Alistair Hartnell.
47:11And while there, we believe you spiked her drink when she wasn't looking.
47:19We didn't believe Kira was drugged because the finger marks on her neck suggested she was held down by force and drowned.
47:26We're awaiting the toxicology report and results from the glass Kira drank from.
47:31And I've no doubt we'll get confirmation that there were significant traces of sleeping pills in her system.
47:37And so, while Miss Mayhew was swimming, she suddenly felt drowsy and swam ashore.
47:45When you returned to your bungalow under the pretense of getting your glasses, you ran down to the beach where Miss Mayhew was lying unconscious on the sand.
47:57And then you did two things.
47:58First, you grabbed her neck and shoulders, making sure to leave bruises so it would look like someone had strangled her and forced her under the water.
48:10Before moving her into the sea for her to be carried away, making sure that she was face down.
48:16So if they're still unconscious, her lungs would fill with water.
48:21It took less than a minute.
48:24All you had to do now was hurry back to the dinner table and leave Kira to drown and let the sea do the rest of the work for you.
48:33We checked with a local oceanologist at the university.
48:37And the current in this bay moves in a northwesterly direction, which means it would have carried Miss Mayhew's body diagonally, taking her from your bungalow here to where her body was discovered here.
48:53And with her clothes being left on the beach here, we'd all assume she swam in a straight line.
49:01Now, you had no idea where the currents would take Kira's body.
49:04So, you had to test it first, didn't you?
49:10You went and found this.
49:13And you threw it into the sea to observe which route it took, which was conveniently in a northwesterly direction, from your bungalow directly to where Kira began her nightly swim.
49:23And that's when your plan finally came together.
49:26Kira's body was found still at sea, not long after she drowned.
49:30But this ball, left overnight, ended up washing up ashore.
49:35And that was your undoing.
49:37But why would he do this to her?
49:40Because he didn't want Kira to help his wife remember.
49:44Well, remember what?
49:45What he did.
49:46I remember, Alistair.
49:57I remember all of it.
50:01All the horror of it.
50:02You rushing in and telling me someone had hurt our little girl.
50:08And I remember the ambulance and the police and the shock and the pain.
50:16And I remember you coming in and holding me and tears shaking.
50:26Both of us heartbroken.
50:29And I remember in that moment, the smell of alcohol on your breath.
50:44And I remember coming back inside.
50:50And seeing you.
50:51I checked the original case file, Mr. Hartnell.
51:01And the phone call to the police in which the hit-and-run driver was described as female
51:07came from an anonymous caller.
51:10That was you, wasn't it?
51:12Trying to direct suspicion away from yourself.
51:14I would have lost everything.
51:32Alistair Hartnell.
51:34I'm arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Kira Mayhew.
51:37You didn't have to say anything.
51:39But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned
51:41something you later reline in court.
51:57I never want to see you ever again.
52:11Well, well, well. Good evening to you both.
52:18Good evening.
52:20Catherine, we spoke at Marianne Edwards' charity barbecue, I think.
52:25I don't remember.
52:27I certainly enjoyed our little chat.
52:30Commissioner, can I get you a rum?
52:33That won't be necessary. This won't take that long.
52:36I think I'll have one, Catherine, if you wouldn't mind.
52:38I appreciate you giving me an advance copy of the article.
52:44Here is my written statement in response.
52:50Saying...
52:52I agree with every single word you've written.
52:59Sorry?
53:00I'm giving some sage advice from my good friend here.
53:04As I say in my statement, it hurt to think that the bond I had forged with this island had been broken.
53:13But the circumstances were of my own making.
53:16So, I will be the one to fix it.
53:20And how will you do that?
53:21As of tomorrow, I will be commencing an initiative with my team.
53:26And with a little help from the Highlands Mayor.
53:29An initiative to strengthen our relationship with the community.
53:35So, if you'll excuse me, I have work to do.
53:38Good evening.
53:39Well, he just killed my article, didn't he?
53:48With one single shot.
53:51I think he maybe just has.
53:56Enjoy your evening.

55:04Yeah, well, I just wanted to say thank you.
55:07Did you have to give my little money back?
55:09I mean, you're not in debt still, are you?

57:17Why was your moped seen outside the victim's villa up in the hills?
57:21Did you ever catch them, Inspector?
57:23I'd sleep much better knowing you did.
