00:00welcome everyone glad to have you with us for this nba cup action hi everyone i'm brian
00:09anderson alongside grant hill and clark kellogg our reporter is ali la force and now in december
00:16here's what the eastern conference standings look like you look at the pistons still early
00:22but they have the third best record in the conference right now they're tied with them
00:26now a look at detroit starting lineup thompson and harris make up the forwards kate and ivy
00:34they're the backcourt and it's duran in at the five roaming the paint they've got andre drummond
00:39hayden watson is out there with prince then there's keon ellis and it's gillespie in at the one well
00:45as we approach the halfway point of the season how hard is it for the top teams to keep their foot
00:50on the gas pedal sustaining excellence and playing winning basketball over the long season
00:56really requires great concentration but the truly great teams find a way to get it done
01:02now here's ivy knocks it down from distance and something ivy continues to improve he's becoming
01:10a real threat from downtown watson passes to drummond now here's ellis
01:17it's watson on the wing five to shoot pass to gillespie over cunningham hits the front of the
01:29rim and out and here are the pistons it's a three-point game here's ivy misses the step-back jumper
01:39and keeping us updated from the sideline alley la force thanks i caught up with the home team's
01:45head coach i asked him what his thoughts were on kade cunningham and he said kade is extremely
01:49talented he's got great size he plays under control he's one of those guys that makes his teammates
01:54better it's easy to see why he initiates so much of their offense back over to you all right appreciate
02:00it alley count it from distance hot off the pass ivy has a shot up no time to waste when you've got a
02:08pro level defense coming at you
02:12shoots perfect night so far two for two about a minute and a half through the first quarter
02:18now here's ivy he's started by ellis oh rocketing off the floor ivy using all of his athletic ability
02:29on the jam and torian prince has played for a number of teams so far he's handled each experience
02:35like a total pro clerk yeah that's the impression i get va i mean he's somebody that welcomes every
02:41new opportunity in this league plays with a maturity and joy that helps any team he's just a basket
02:48ball player understands his role and relishes that wherever he is and there's thompson on the assist
02:56by harris they've really come out swinging hitting four of their first five shots
03:03it's prince on the wing here's drummond always a nice way to start makes his first one when drummond's
03:10points come they tend to come inside he's got a lot of ways to beat you down low
03:14back to cunningham
03:24drummond grabs the miss hey sometimes the best looks don't equate to points
03:29pass to gillespie ellis on the wing over ivy ellis's shot is off probably not the shot they had in mind
03:37but you can't fault him he had a clean look and that one's good cunningham tough shot i mean
03:44cunningham has great size at his position which really helps him in the paint
03:49here's watson banked it in off the glass attacking in the painted area clearly that was their game
03:56plan coming in the pistons leading and here's ivy from the arc no he's made three missed two now i think
04:05everybody in the building expecting him to make that collective shot here's drummond here's watson
04:13that misses got a chance to tie it there's no way that's the best look this offense can produce
04:19not at all i mean that's where they want him looking for a teammate not trying to do it on his own
04:24he needs to share the wealth there gillespie passes to watson
04:29here's ellis oh stolen by harris
04:41here's thompson and the slam dunk by thompson flying high asar thompson
04:49i wish i still had hops like that here's prince
04:53the rebound by detroit they're moving on after a tough loss they took at the hands of the pacers
05:00they just weren't careful with the rock the passing was loose the ball handling was lackluster
05:06that's not how you win in this league well you know you got to take care of the basketball hopefully
05:11they learn from that game and are better going forward here's prince following the three-pointer by
05:16detroit a nice shot by watson not the best of shot selection there but you know what you do not look
05:23the gift horse in the mouth there's cunningham with a three and the pistons another three
05:30the big story thus far how well they've shot the rock very high percentage so far and if you want to
05:37start a game hot that's the way to do it the home team calls timeout
05:46and taking a broader look here at the year-over-year scoring trend for tobias harris
05:51well i like that he's really found a balance he doesn't feel the need to put the team on his back
05:56and try to carry them offensively but he can still bring it when they need him most and maybe
06:02what's most important he provides that veteran leadership necessary all right we've now got our
06:072k insider shams tirania on the line he's got a special report chombs it's all yours thanks well
06:14the detroit pistons looking to build on last season's breakthrough coach jv bickerstaff said kate
06:20cunningham's leadership makes his job easier and all that aside bickerstaff said their fierce style
06:26is key adding win or lose we win the fight not a team to be taken lightly all right chombs thanks a
06:33lot outside watson puts it up ellis's shot is off open midi right there um that's letting the defense
06:43off the hook when you don't cash in and it's cunningham missing you won't see that from him
06:49very often missing the bunny like that lets it go from the wing thompson pulls it in detroit leading
06:57by 12. coming in right side yes and a nice assist from thompson thompson's got four assists in the
07:07game you've got to love the way he's scoring it tonight very efficient gillespie passes to watson
07:14to stop the run and it's good on the layup watson's got six points nice start as he's knocked down three
07:21of his first four and has hit the ground at high speed cunningham has the open look and again it's
07:28detroit converting you can't help but look toward their defense they're totally lost well everything's
07:35coming too easily i mean at some point defensively you have to take something away
07:40shot is good by gillespie good execution they're getting some short-range looks here
07:48a minute nine left to play in the first quarter and so the timeout by jb bickerstaff here he's going
07:54to gather the troops and talk it over last year shows that having the better overall record doesn't
07:59mean you're going to dominate the lesser opponent guys they split the season series and you know there's
08:04always randomness to this game the unpredictability of it you win some you lose some but they certainly
08:09want to unfold their talent level tonight so it's both teams making substitutions here
08:15and while we can let's see which teams have been running the league's most efficient offenses the smart
08:21offensive moves this team makes helps them open up the floor and find great looks that's how they've
08:27secured such an impressive shooting percentage
08:35saster outside the baseline j is on the way here we go here's herger oh now that's how you finish a
08:44break throw it down with force great teamwork on that drive punctuated by a strong finish that is the
08:52perfect fast break guys getting a hoop before the defense can get set robinson it's hauled in
08:58by herter shooting an excellent 56 percent in this quarter
09:08there's 31 seconds left to play in the first the pistons lead by 10
09:17here's robinson chalk up two there defensively their effort hasn't been great early on giving
09:23up too many open shots i mean that's what's happening here they look to me to be a bit sluggish
09:27hachimura finds james back to hachimura james outside over robinson that one's good from james
09:35on the assist from hachimura i know it's early but you have to wonder if these offenses can keep this
09:41up high octane action for sure crowd pleasing already love her that's good boy i like their energy coming
09:50in terrific execution so far and you know it's an all-out effort they've come in with very aggressive
09:56offense so far and so it's detroit going into the break up 12. they just can't miss right now every
10:04shot they're taking you assume is going in we'll be right back with you shortly

10:32for a comeback and let's get your take guys on the scoring breakdown for the pistons well in today's nba
10:39the three-point shot is so valuable they realize this and that's why they're continuing to drain as
10:45many as they can i would like to highlight two guys the excellent passing they've done early on i
10:51mean they've done a really good job putting the ball into the hands of guys ready to shoot it we've
10:56got mitchell rui hachimura is out there with rashawn holmes and there's kevin herger and it's james in
11:02a two guard all five guys are in sync their ball movement is flawless the last five trips they've had
11:09have ended with a great pass leading to a basket they're really sharing the sugar and for detroit
11:15they've got duncan robinson marcus sasser is out there with karis lavert then it's isaiah stewart
11:21and it's clintman in at the four count it good decision making scopes the situation puts the pass
11:28right on the mark pass to stewart
11:35now robinson
11:39james with the rebound all alone from mid-range you've got to think he's kicking himself and
11:45mitchell with the slam i'll tell you a little extra pressure on d when you're up against a point guard
11:52who can elevate it doesn't make it easy does it and you know guys showing how dynamic a
11:57weapon he is for this offense they feed off of that energy and ability to make plays it gets them
12:03going i just love that alley-oop slam pa defense disorganized defense pays boy i tell you what guys
12:12this is really getting close to being real ugly and what an aggressive move to the rim he's really
12:19trying to fire up his teammates right now boy it's not hard to feel inspired after a teammate makes that
12:25kind of finish you know when you're looking to close the gap you need guys who will take it upon
12:30themselves to step up take the initiative and make something happen and it's james with the jam
12:38just magnificent i mean he punishes the d for lackluster effort they look a little disorganized
12:43there the result is an emphatic jam guys there has to be better rim protection than that though not very
12:50good and so the timeout by jb vickerstaff here we might see him looking to make some tweaks to the
12:56strategy both teams will make substitutions
12:58and here in the second two minutes gone by
13:14now here's cunningham the d's right on him
13:18goes up at the stripe it's hauled in by hurter gotten off to a sensational five for five start of the
13:24second quarter gillespie passes to hurter over cunningham hurter can't hit the pistons lead by six
13:35pass to stewart lets the three fly can't get it to drop shooting great 62 for the field and continuing
13:43to get it done here's watson thompson pulls it in and that's a low percentage shot and i'm sure he knows
13:51well you can't be forcing a shot like that you got to keep the ball moving get something better
13:56i mean he does everything on the floor cunningham always with max effort and let's send it over to
14:02ali la force hey kate cunningham is leading the way for this pistons team coach jb bickerstaff said he
14:08shows belief in his teammates and that's what leadership is he's with you during the good and
14:13the bad that gives the rest of his team more comfort and confidence guys back over to you
14:18establishing the mindset ali thanks very much for the report clark the one expression you hear a lot
14:24in basketball reward the big bad what's that all about well you know ba the big guys often are the
14:29guys doing the dirty work the unsung work rebounding setting screens getting up and down the floor to
14:35create opportunities for their teammates but they also want that rock too so get them the ball every now
14:41and then let them eat free throw good robinson devias harris checked in for stewart 12.
14:55the pistons lead by 11.
14:56and in the second quarter a little under three and a half minutes played already here's thompson oh my
15:06goodness disrespectful and nice work there in the pick and roll cunningham demonstrating improvement
15:14and knowing how to break defenses down a terrific view of that move captured on the connected cam thanks to
15:19at&t now here's watson he has six the baseline jay is off the mark ivy with the ball he's picked up by ellis
15:30for three robinson the offensive rebound pass to ivy puts up a three buries it from three ivy's got 14 points
15:40for the game yeah he's in his bag from beyond the arc right now you see his confidence yeah i'd be confident
15:47too as a matter of fact i mean if you're stacking up threes the way he is i mean he's doing all this
15:52work from behind the arc the home team calls timeout
15:57and detroit making a change here durin's checked in and now a peek at some of the players competing
16:03for a spot in the dunk contest all of them true dunk artists who can do some spectacular things in the air
16:09and i can't wait to see what these guys have dreamed up this year the level of athleticism and creativity
16:16that goes into this contest is what makes it so incredible to watch you look at thompson and at dunk
16:21contest voting he's third a premier athlete in the nba well the fans want to see him fly and us
16:28broadcasters we want him in i expect to see him compete during all-star weekend believe that so that's
16:34how things are currently looking for the dunk contest but of course we'll update you with the latest news as
16:40we receive it and as this lineup starts to take shape this event is only getting more and more
16:45exciting a nice shot by watson coach is loving the ball movement and here's detroit they're on a 14-6 run
16:57back to thompson detroit moving the ball around
16:59comingham outside driving it and cunningham throws it down the ferocious finish love watching cunningham
17:11use his size and athleticism on the drive when you think about the skill of kate cunningham grant at his
17:17height what a combination you know ba whether it's scoring inside or seeing over the defense or just
17:23beasting on smaller guards his six foot six frame is certainly an advantage now here's cuttinghand
17:31he's got 17 on the wing ivy
17:39and again it's detroit converting and with the talent and the competitiveness that ivy has we're
17:44going to see a lot of nights like this in his nba career it's just a matter of how many here's ellis
17:50in his last outing eight points for the lackluster effort on defense gave him the look he won
17:58from 12 feet and detroit again with the bucket and why go away from attacking inside if the d has
18:04no answer for you gotten eight of 14 shots to drop so far in the second
18:11here's ellis and he gets it to go four for six so far he's giving them a spark because he
18:18can't win this game all by himself harris on the wing
18:25that falls nice feed that time from cunningham
18:29cunningham's got four assists in the game a minute and a half left in the half

19:39here's duran and he buries his first look and you have to appreciate the heart they've shown on the
19:46offensive boards this quarter well it's paid off with a greater rate of second chance hoops
19:52i mean great effort to build this lead on their part
19:59here's gillespie oh at the buzzer wow i didn't think he was going to get it off in time oh wow
20:09i agree i mean and to have the composure to lock in and get off a shot he feels confident about
20:15that's good work and so it's cade cunningham making things happen for detroit eight points in the

20:52standings and just for a moment here i was wondering if you guys were playing in the league today

21:20half things going well extremely well for the detroit pistons watching them whoop those boys on the
21:27boards that brought a tear to my eyes and i don't cry i think it's your tissue you got one oh that's

21:50for the start of the third quarter
22:07and with the second half upon us we'll find out if this game becomes the route that it's threatening to
22:12be you look at kate cunningham in this game he has been everywhere yet tonight he's done a great job of
22:18slashing through the lane and finishing yeah you know what guys they gave him too many free runs to
22:23the hoop in the first half i think they've got to be a lot tougher on him body him up be physical with it
22:38gone three of five from the perimeter in this game they've got peyton watson also andre drummond
22:47out there prince is out there with keon ellis and it's gillespie in at the point guard position and
22:53they're plus five on the boys after that rebound and for the pistons kate and ivy they're the backcourt
22:59harris and duran together in the middle and it's thompson in at the small forward position ivy's shot is off
23:05doing a terrific 58 from the floor here's prince had a chance there to cut it to single digits but
23:14it's off target master cunningham now harris on the wing ivy launches the three he's now eight for
23:24eleven after that made shot what a quick trigger ivy has it and now he does it what a release
23:30watson passes to ellis over ivy ellis good ellis has got 11 points willing passers unselfish play you
23:42have to appreciate this kind of offense coming in left side lots of room not enough on that one as it
23:49misses gone just one of three in the second half pass to gillespie and he was fouled in the act of
23:58shooting opportunity for a three-point play here and he gives up some size inside but makes a great
24:04adjustment on the finish you know with that size difference that's not an easy shot i mean
24:10i don't care how close to the rim he is that's a tough shot
24:12and we're just about a minute and a half into the third quarter of basketball

24:29from deep and the dunk by durin you have to put a body on durin he's quick he's athletic and he has
24:42that seven five wingspan pass to drummond
24:48now ellis
24:52out to the right wing here's gillespie that one falls coming off a drummond feed
24:5815 points in the game he's bringing a lot of energy to this offense not letting the scoreboard
25:05discourage him right now well i tell you what the hole would be a lot deeper if he wasn't being as
25:10efficient as he's been so far now here's durin checking his stats he's scoring around nine and a
25:16half points per game and that one's good cunningham and force feeding the ball inside i mean no
25:22reason to go away from what's working and when you make five in a row in close like that it also
25:26takes pressure off your perimeter guys too and it's watson missing i'll tell you what they've rebounded the ball
25:34tremendously well yeah you look across the board it's actually sizing up shaping up to be a great game
25:40i mean strong performances throughout and they've really been strong on the glass
25:48gillespie passes to drummond the pistons clear it durin's got double digit rebounds now in the game
25:55here's ivy that one's true and that's nine for 12 for him now oh one of the better attackers of the
26:03rim ivy will not be stopped to the paint
26:10ellis on the wing ivy defends gillespie passes to drummond here's watson
26:16off target with the three that is not the shot you need to be looking for when you're trying to
26:24break out of a slump balanced play has given them the leads and also quieted this crowd yeah you said
26:30the key word there balanced i mean their big lead owes as much to their defense as their offense

26:38the eighth and opponent shooting percentage and they moved the ball so well finishing in the top
26:46third and assist per game so good at looking for the best shot possible at all times and you love
26:52how they've controlled the glass at both ends it takes a huge effort to out rebound this club

27:01drummond passes to ellis they need this the rebound by detroit duran's got the glass covered here
27:10tonight that's 11 boards for him ivy's shot is off man that's his shot maybe he was too wide open
27:18to the inside watson passes to ellis and here's drummond ivy defends the shot
27:25and it's watson missing and that's a low percentage shot and i'm sure he knows it well you can't be
27:32forcing a shot like that you got to keep the ball moving get something better

27:47here's gillespie he's got 15 just five to shoot and there's the basket and the whistle blows
27:55chance at a three-point play here going to the line for one all right guys what do you think so
28:00far on the offensive approach for the pistons you know all game long they've imposed their will on
28:05the interior scoring a lot of points in the painted area and they've also been in the zone with the
28:12mid-range jumper the defense has given them space and they haven't hesitated to rise and fire
28:17the pistons lead by 14

28:33let's see some of the numbers here for keon ellis and for an idea of where his offense is right now
28:39take a look at his true shooting percentage decreasing over the last five games he desperately needs to
28:45find his stroke tonight gone over two from outside here in the third pass to prince
28:53outside mitchell ellis outside now mitchell it's prince on the wing
29:01no good on the triple and really a reflection of their superior effort level for this point
29:07it seems to me they've gone after this win a little bit more
29:11well grant tobias harris has been around the league what's his best asset you know i think
29:16it's his reliability and versatility harris is always on the floor having led the nba in games
29:23played multiple times and he just gets the job done now here's ivy his nightly number is respectable
29:30putting up 10 points a game and this is what makes ivy special his ability to finish with power at the rim
29:37shooting a disappointing 38 let's check in with our reporter ali la force well the pistons are
29:44improving on both ends but particularly on defense kate cunningham said everybody is stepping up on that
29:50end and taking the challenge to guard we have a good system that allows us all to play our strengths
29:55we're still hungry though we're not satisfied at all guys more to prove okay ali thanks for the report

30:07inside here's watson and he banks in the layup watson's got 10. detroit leading by 17.
30:21a minute and a half left to play in the third and here's ivy from the arc they get it back durin here's
30:27harris harris lays it up and banks it in yes he has six boy that's a nice touch from harris right
30:33there showing you exactly how under control he is close to the basket ellis on the wing
30:41here's watson thompson pulls it in thompson's got six rebounds here tonight he's been off this whole
30:49period unable to sustain any kind of consistency and he gets it to go as they call the foul he's on
30:56his way to the line for one more and they're just taking what the defense gives them and right now
31:02that's the interior well once they recognize the advantage they had inside it made a lot of sense just
31:07to continue to attack that area here's what detroit's going with right now stewart he's checked in for
31:13harris lavert comes in for thompson and kate cunningham subbed in for ivy yeah as of right
31:19now jaylen durin kind of seems like a classic big man he can block he can rebound and he really focuses
31:26on finding close range looks here's gay and he drops in the layup off the glass they're really looking
31:32to that inside game here in the second half getting away from taking a bunch of threes
31:37here's cunningham makes a fantastic move and nails the shot cunningham's got 23 points yeah
31:46i just love how cunningham alters his pace to get what he wants here's mitchell connects the jumper
31:53drops and another great assist the offense is really clicking now you know the defense has really been
32:00kept off balance because of the outstanding passion four straight field goals have been made off an assist
32:06lever that's good and now almost all their points coming from the paint got nothing to fall from
32:13outside in this third quarter pass to gay here's gillespie
32:23outside mitchell fires from deep oh and the buzzer beater is good it just nails the three way to close
32:32the quarter talk about lifting up a team and energizing them at the end of a quarter a three
32:37at the buzzer that'll do it well through three quarters of play down double digits it may be
32:42difficult to overcome detroit on top up 19 and time to step away quickly but we'll be back in no time
32:50with the start of the fourth quarter
33:02and a worthy candidate tonight as we take a look at our state farm assist of the game
33:07and just a selfless decision from your two guard showing his ability to get his teammates good looks
33:13yeah and as a two guard he's typically not a reluctant shooter so it was
33:17really nice to see him orchestrating for a teammate instead
33:22well there may not be a lot of drama down the stretch as we head into the fourth quarter
33:26but stranger things have happened rui hachimura is out there with zeke nagy
33:30then there's kevin herter then there's mitchell and it's gillespie in at the one
33:34gachi good get the ball in close get your points that way that's doing good business
33:45now lavert kicks it out to cunningham
33:50and again it's detroit absolutely ruthless he's not about to start showing mercy now
33:57guys when you're this hot it's elementary let it fly keep staying at it
34:02here's nagy from deep mitchell knocks down the long jay well they count on big time production from him
34:09at the offensive end
34:14and here's cunningham
34:18good cunningham's got 10 points in just the second half they've been a little soft with their defense
34:24on the interior yeah and they're really getting pummeled on points in the paint and it's good two points
34:30and he's coming off a huge performance and his confidence couldn't be any higher and his coach
34:35knows that too showing no signs of slowing or cooling down they're gonna ride him as far as he can take them
34:42now here's hachimura
34:45outside mitchell the three oh he's been flawless tonight now he's six for six and the defense is
34:52really allowing them too much room on the perimeter
34:58now here's cunningham
35:02it's tipped
35:02lavert goes against mitchell and mitchell with the slam
35:10ooh bouncy that should give him a nice lift good timing they needed that one and you know that's
35:17exactly what happens when you don't settle that's the result tremendous effort and a big time finish

35:31cunningham's got nine points now in the quarter one this half two for the game stay active from beyond

36:12and so cunningham will bring it up for detroit 22 was their biggest lead and that one's good
36:22and the pistons lead by 18 and what a read there from cunningham showing he has vision and timing with

36:35the three from mitchell oh he can't miss eight for eight after that shot he's had an amazing quarter
36:42and there's steel trail hard to believe that oh it's stolen by achimura

37:04here's mitchell pounded by harris mitchell the pass to gillespie over cunningham
37:09the lsb can't get it to go and they're up considerably because of their efforts on the glass
37:14yeah rebounding has been a big key in this one they've asserted their will and have taken control
37:20on the glass and trust me when the d's slow to react he'll be the first guy to make them pay
37:25boy the defense looks shell-shocked i mean they're on the ropes right now on their heels here's drummond
37:31back to the pistons picking up a basket just moments ago and that one drops mitchell's got 22 points
37:39he has been unguardable there's been no misses yet you have to keep getting him the ball and jb
37:45becker staff decides to call timeout he clearly wants to talk it over and make sure everyone is focused
37:51go for the pistons durin he's checked in for stewart thompson comes in for robinson and ivy
38:00subbed in for lever a chance here to catch up with ali from the sideline hey team i was able to
