00:00I've been working in media for 10 years. I started young. I started when I was in college.
00:05I would say that it's important to have a beat, and beat is a term that journalists
00:14use to describe the particular topic or field of reporting that you do, field of writing
00:20that you do. I think it is extremely important to have a beat and a discipline. But I also
00:27think it's important, especially for women, to not be pigeonholed into one type of coverage,
00:32one type of topic, one type of field. Because what I've found in the last couple of years
00:38of working in music in particular is that oftentimes, if you are the woman, you become the token
00:43woman. Meaning, if you get called to be on a panel, you are the sole woman voice on that
00:49panel. If you get called to contribute to a listicle from a legacy publication and they
00:54need a woman's voice, you become the sole woman's voice. And if it is your prerogative
00:59to be the only woman, that's on you. But I think there should be more consideration of
01:05what it would look like to have more women in music media and not be the only woman.
01:12Because a lot of the times, I have been the only woman.
