On December 3, 1984, a storage tank at a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, released methyl isocyanate gas into the surrounding city.

Safety systems had been shut down to save costs. There was no warning siren. Most residents were asleep.

The gas sank close to the ground, entering homes, schools, and hospitals within minutes. Doctors were not told what chemical had leaked, leaving them unable to treat victims effectively.

Thousands died within hours. Tens of thousands more were permanently injured.

The Bhopal disaster remains one of the clearest examples of how industrial negligence can turn an ordinary night into a mass casualty event.
