On December 6, 1917, a routine maritime accident in Halifax Harbor triggered the largest man-made explosion the world had ever seen.

A French cargo ship carrying military explosives caught fire after a collision. Civilians gathered along the shoreline, unaware of the danger — a common sight in an era before modern safety protocols.

When the ship detonated, the blast flattened entire neighborhoods, generated a massive shockwave, and caused destruction far beyond the harbor itself.

The Halifax Explosion fundamentally changed how dangerous materials are transported and remains one of the deadliest industrial disasters in history — despite being largely forgotten today.
