00:00Hey, hey, what's going on, everybody? It's your host, Shantae Wayans. And yes, I said Wayans,
00:10not another one. Well, we're trying to get our own football team. You understand what I'm saying?
00:15We're going to have Coach Keenan. We're going to have Marlon play the quarterback and a field goal
00:20because he just run everywhere. But I'm so happy to be here. We are back in New Orleans, Louisiana,
00:25for the Essence Black Woman in Sports Touchdowns and Turn Up Recap Show presented by Coca-Cola Zero
00:33Sugar. Man, what a game. Is it me or men getting BVLs now? I think they need to bring some
00:41Hoochie Daddy shorts to the football field. You understand? Now that the big game is a wrap,
00:48I'll be taking a look back at some of the biggest moments of the day from the field to the halftime
00:53stage and checking in to see what y'all are saying on social media. Stay in the conversation with us
01:00using the hashtag Essence BWIS. All right, so we already knew Rihanna was going to shut it down
01:07for her big return back to the stage. My favorite part is just how much she was glowing on that stage,
01:14looking beautiful, more beautiful than ever. I don't know how she was able to perform pregnant
01:20in that tight suit. I can't even move when I'm bloated. It makes no sense. Now, let's take a look
01:27at what y'all are saying on Black Twitter. I think Rihanna's halftime show just broke Twitter.
01:38Me realizing Rihanna is pregnant again and we are never getting another album. That is hilarious.
01:45Yo, Rihanna pregnant again? ASAP is not holding off. You understand? He gonna get her pregnant every
01:56chance he get. When Rihanna's surprise guest was another baby. Who? Yo, y'all out there cutting it
02:05up. All right, leave Rihanna alone. Oh, you know what? I think we got somebody else who wants to weigh in
02:12about some of the biggest moments from yesterday. Let's see if they're ready.
02:18Oh, we've got Danielle Cadet, the executive editor and VP of content for Essence with us
02:25to talk about Rihanna's performance and her special announcement. Danielle, what did you think about
02:32the performance? I think any, I think anybody who can get on the Super Bowl stage pregnant and
02:40perform the way Rihanna just performed is iconic. Rihanna opened her show by showing off her pregnant
02:47belly singing, bitch, better have my money. Like that's a statement in and of itself, you know? And from a personal
02:56standpoint, like as a mom who's been considering having a second baby, Rihanna just inspired the
03:02hell out of me. She basically just said that, you know, I can do whatever I want. I can live my life
03:08and I can still be a boss at work. You know, I see people making jokes about like, we're not going to
03:12get another album. But what she actually just said to us is that having a baby is not going to stop her
03:18from doing the best work. And it really doesn't get more in the context. I couldn't have said it
03:23better. I definitely couldn't have said it better. How major was it for you to see that she announced
03:29it, the pregnancy on stage? Yeah, I mean, I think that was huge. First of all, she owned the news,
03:36right? Like she didn't let anybody break that for her. And then again, for her to come, we've all been
03:42highly anticipating her coming back to stage after having a baby. And so to say that, again,
03:48having a baby is not going to stop this show. Right. And that she's going to be able to perform
03:53while pregnant, while doing dope ass dances, while doing the Tootsie Roll, while twerking.
04:00Again, like she's just a badass. Like you just don't get better than that. Right. I actually think I
04:05seen the baby twerking in her stomach. I could have sworn I saw a little. The baby was definitely
04:09twerking in the womb. For sure. Oh, man. Thanks so much, Danielle. And I appreciate you coming.
04:15Thanks for talking to us. Of course. Thanks for having me. And now we've got Angela Yee with us.
04:23What up, Ang? I'm saying it. What's up? How you doing? How you feeling? I'm good. How are you?
04:31I'm doing well. So good to see you and have you here to talk about Rihanna's concert. What was your
04:37favorite part about the concert, a.k.a. Rihanna's concert? Well, first of all, hearing some of the
04:44songs that I love the most that I forgot about, kind of, because it's been a minute. But I think
04:49you think about the, like, how long she's been doing music and how many hits she has. The first
04:53thing you think is how she's going to put all of that in 13 minutes. Right. Even, like,
04:57Only Girl in the World that I love. This song's We Found Love. And I'm like, wow, I forgot about all
05:02pieces. Yeah. Yeah. What was the song that made you jump out your seat? Um, Brew Boy, because once
05:09that started happening, I knew where the production was going in. And she was getting a little risky
05:13with the movies. I was like, are they going to be okay? Right. Right. Right. Well, you can't, you can't
05:17stop Rihanna. Uh, she could do whatever she wanted. Uh, was it everything that you expected?
05:23I did not know that she was pregnant. Okay. So, and I'm going to be honest, you know how, like,
05:29somebody comes out and you're like, I don't know. You don't want to say somebody's pregnant.
05:32Oh yeah. So you're like, she should not be. I'm not pregnant. My stomach looks like that.
05:37So I was like, it could just be, you know, whatever. No big deal. Maybe she's not, she
05:44could not be. But then they did confirm her. So I was like, whew, because you never want
05:47to put that on somebody. I know. We, we had to Google it. We, we definitely went on Google
05:51to make sure because ASAP out here, making sure he get her pregnant every year. I can see
05:56that. Um, thank you so much. I love her outfit. And then I also love the dancer and then she
06:02really looked like the queen. Yeah, she did. She looked beautiful. I don't know how she
06:06fit in that suit. That's what I want to know. Thank you so much for joining us though here
06:12today. Uh, it's always good seeing you and talking to you and, uh, wish you all the best
06:16every time. Yes. You too. I can't wait to see you in person. I know I'm in new Orleans and
06:22this is where we met. Well, this is where we parted. Okay. Okay. Well, I hope to see
06:30you soon. All right. Take care. All right. Love. Bye bye. Thanks again to Angela Yee and
06:36Danielle Cadet for talking to us and stick around cause coming up, we've got Essence
06:40fashion editor, Shelton Boyd Griffith to break down Riri's halftime show looks. So keep it right
06:46there for more from Essence Black Woman in Sports touchdowns and turn up recap show
06:52presented by Coca-Cola Zero Sugar.
07:16I need to try it first.
07:46Trying to try it first.
07:48My God.
07:49I want to try it first.
07:52I need to try it first.
07:54I want to try it first.
08:04I want to try it first.
08:06I want to try it first.
08:09Yes.
08:11Let me try different things.
08:15This was a pretty good thing.
08:16Y'all still with us? You better be.
08:19We got another special guest joining us.
08:21It's hip-hop artist Tommy Lee.
08:24Tommy, what is up?
08:28Hey!
08:30How you doing? How you feeling?
08:32I'm good. I feel good.
08:34I feel like word, word, word, word, word, word, word.
08:38You love the performance, I take it.
08:41The big surprise.
08:51I can't express how amazing that was.
08:55Absolutely.
08:57You wasn't expecting that.
08:59No, and I was going to say, did she deliver everything you did expect with a little extra?
09:05She still down to every last, our favorite song.
09:11They were, we played, um, like every song that we love.
09:16Right.
09:17They were just doing a good song, and it's kind of skeptical,
09:20but she did the whole playlist that made us fall in love with Rihanna.
09:24Absolutely.
09:25I was totally satisfied.
09:27I know.
09:28Now, was you standing up the entire time like you was at the concert, or did you...
09:33I actually beat up at one point, but guess where I was?
09:37What?
09:38I was at, um, Mr. Child.
09:40And if it wasn't like my three friends who went live, I would have missed the performance.
09:46Oh, no, you couldn't do that.
09:48I was online watching the performance.
09:50It was crazy.
09:51Mr. Child, and the whole restaurant was going up with me.
09:54Oh, yeah.
09:56You would have to get rid of those friends if you missed the performance.
09:59We can't have them.
10:00Right!
10:01I was trying to figure out how she was able to fit in that outfit.
10:17And move.
10:18She's trying to be kind of like, uh, four or five months-ish.
10:23Right.
10:24But she's still a little.
10:26I wonder how she really feels, um, you know, once you have a baby, you can try to get that
10:31crime.
10:32Right.
10:33I guess she's trying to knock it out and get him out of what it does.
10:36I wouldn't want to be right back pregnant, but it's fine.
10:38Absolutely.
10:39She's funny.
10:40Ah, man.
10:41Tommy Lee, thank you so much for joining us.
10:46No problem, guys.
10:48Yeah.
10:49Go listen to that album.
10:51Tommy Lee and the whole baby.
10:54Ah, man.
10:56We love you, baby.
10:58And now we're going to check in with Essence fashion editor Shelton Boyd Griffith to break
11:04down Rihanna's looks from head to toe.
11:07Shelton, what's up?
11:09How's it going?
11:11How you doing?
11:12I'm doing well.
11:13How about yourself?
11:16Good.
11:18All right.
11:19Before we get into Rihanna's halftime performance, we have to give it up for Cheryl Lee Ralph's
11:25look.
11:26Shelton, who was she wearing on stage?
11:29Oh, she was wearing Charles Harbison, amazing black designer based in L.A.
11:34And throughout her whole press tour, she's been wearing black designer.
11:38So it was very of the moment for her to see the National Black Anthem wearing a black designer.
11:44Ah, amazing, amazing.
11:45What was your...
11:46I actually talked to Charles like soon after and he said that Cheryl is an iconic woman.
11:53She's a superhero and he loves to design for superheroes.
11:56Ah, I love that.
11:57So, pinch the red.
11:59It was beautiful.
12:00She looked amazing.
12:01What was your initial reaction when you saw Rihanna hit the stage?
12:07I was like, wow, she's back.
12:09Yeah.
12:10The thing is back.
12:11Back with a surprise and still looking good.
12:14What stylistic themes or motifs did you see throughout the performance?
12:19It seemed like she was referencing her career.
12:22Um, she has this jumpsuit that's very like homage, like work wear.
12:26Like the work, work, work song.
12:28Um, and she also wore red, which is red is like the motif that she wears for Aliyah.
12:32She actually went on a date last year with ASAP Rocky wearing a designer,
12:37an Aliyah coat by that same designer.
12:39Yeah.
12:40Which she then wore on the cover of both Aliyah.
12:43And then last, today she was wearing Aliyah jackets.
12:46So it's like, everything is intentional with this red.
12:49Custom design has become an integral component of halftime performances.
12:54Why is that?
12:56Um, I think when you think about costume design throughout like,
12:59the history of like, uh, halftime shows, like it's that one outfit that stands out.
13:04Beyonce in that black, you know, one piece, you know, Michael Jackson and that signature gold jacket.
13:10And now Rihanna in this red jumpsuit.
13:12Thanks Shelton for that fashion breakdown.
13:14That was really on point.
13:16And it wouldn't be the big game without some big names.
13:20We spotted award-winning musicians, Questlove and Adam Blackstone.
13:25I just love seeing us all over here.
13:29Look how black and beautiful we are right there.
13:32And we got baby face that came out and perform America the beautiful before the game.
13:38Uh, I, I think it's time for him to get a beard and stuff now.
13:44Cause he, he definitely don't got the baby face no more.
13:47This is all adult face happening right here, but we love him.
13:52We love him always.
13:53Then we got football legend, Michael Strahan, who is looking dapper than the other.
13:58But I guess is this, is this like the Mike Tyson collection?
14:04Cause I know he, he, he got what is happening with this gap.
14:08You got all this money and you have not afforded yourself to close that gap.
14:13I don't know.
14:14Still looking good.
14:15Still looking good.
14:16And one of my favorite father and daughter doodles, Jay-Z and Blue Ivory were in that house twinning as usual.
14:23I just wish, do we look like twins?
14:27Me and Jay-Z?
14:28Cause I'm trying to, I'm trying to let him be my father.
14:30You understand?
14:31Looking like a whole Beyonce.
14:34They got Jay-Z right there.
14:37Uh, and we were so happy to see the Mar Hamlin at the big game, healthy and in good spirits.
14:44We glad you made it, man.
14:46We're glad you're here.
14:47We're glad you came out to the game.
14:49All right, y'all keep it locked because we got more from the essence black woman in sports touchdowns
14:55to turn up recap show presented by Coca-Cola zero sugar on the way.
15:01I need to try it first.
15:16Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:17I need to try it first.
16:05Welcome back, beautiful people.
16:07If you're just now tuning in, I'm your host, Shante Wayans, and we're live from New Orleans.
16:12And yeah, it is lit, and it's Mardi Gras here, so you know we turning up.
16:18And now we're going to check in with former pro football player Dwayne Allen.
16:24Hey, Dwayne, what up?
16:26Shante, what's good?
16:28Thanks for having me on.
16:29Aw, man, thank you so much for doing this.
16:31Now, you won a ring in 2018, so do you know how this type of victory feels?
16:38I know how it feels on both sides.
16:41I was fortunate enough to be playing in the big game in 2017 and being on the losing end
16:47to Philadelphia and then playing in 2018 and being on the winning end.
16:52So I can speak to both ends and what both teams are feeling right now.
16:57And, you know, starting with Philadelphia is heartbreaking, right?
17:00Yeah.
17:01All the hard work that you put into the season, the emotional highs and lows, the physical
17:10toll that an NFL season puts on your body.
17:12Yeah.
17:12You know, and then you get to the end of it and you're not crowned champion.
17:16That hurts.
17:18But then for, you know, a Kansas City Chief team who, very similar to the club that I was
17:24playing with in Boston, were expected to be there and were kind of seen as underdogs
17:30because people hate to see a winner win.
17:33Yeah.
17:34It is what it is, right?
17:38Like, people didn't want Kansas City to win because they're winners.
17:43And, you know, Kansas City was able to go out there and execute at a high level, make some
17:47halftime adjustments and, you know, come out as champions.
17:51Yeah.
17:51You're absolutely right.
17:52What were the game highlights for you?
17:56Oof.
17:56You know, the internet's going to blow up on the call at the end of the game, but there
18:01were calls before that.
18:04There was a Nick Bolton fumble recovery for a touchdown that was taken back because the
18:11pass was ruled incomplete.
18:15There was a fourth, third down catch by Dallas Goddard that was finally challenged by Andy
18:24Reid that was overturned or, excuse me, upheld because of replay, which was questionable,
18:33right?
18:34So, like, so much attention goes to that flag at the end of the game, the holding call.
18:39But there were so many questionable plays throughout the game that really were the highlight in this
18:46game before it even got to that one.
18:48So, yeah, look, it was so exciting to see those guys go out and play.
18:54Patrick Mahomes, his run on that hurt ankle had to be the highlight for me.
18:59A guy who, of course, is MVP caliber, but hurt his ankle in the first half, you know, was
19:06able to come out in the second half and.
19:11Come back.
19:12Oh, we don't want to lose you, Dwayne.
19:14Where you go, Dwayne?
19:16That's all right.
19:16We'll get him back.
19:18Thanks for joining us, Dwayne.
19:20We appreciate you.
19:21Now, don't go nowhere, you guys.
19:23It ain't over just yet.
19:25And we got more coming up after the break.
19:28This is Essence Black Woman in Sports Touchdowns and Turn Up Recap Show presented by Coca-Cola
19:34Zero Sugar.
19:45I need to try it first.
19:56Yeah, yeah, yeah.
19:57This is Essence Black Woman in Sports Touchdowns and Turn Up Recap Show.
20:27And before we go, we have to talk to our girl, Elle Duncan.
20:52Elle, how are you feeling after watching the big game?
20:56I'm feeling fantastic.
20:58I feel like that game checked every single box.
21:02It was a classic.
21:03There was a little controversy.
21:05If you love the sports aspect of the game at the end with the penalty that really kind
21:10of, you know, had it in very anticlimactically, but, and then, of course, we got halftime with
21:15Rihanna, which was already in and of itself so special.
21:20And for her to make her announcement, somewhat make an announcement.
21:23I'm the only one that was a little confused at first.
21:25It was like, when Beyonce made her announcement, right?
21:28Like, she, like, rubbed the bellies.
21:30Yeah.
21:30She was like, I'm pregnant.
21:32Here's the deal.
21:33Rihanna's was a little more subtle, so I didn't want to out her or, you know, was part of it.
21:39She just had her baby, like, eight months ago.
21:41Right, right.
21:42So, yeah, she's doing it.
21:43It was great.
21:44ASAP didn't give it no time off.
21:46He was like, let's get right back to it.
21:49Another one.
21:50I'm going to DJ Catlin right away.
21:51Another one.
21:52So, tell us about how monumental today was with the two black quarterbacks playing against
21:57each other and then having the first black female coach to play in a big game.
22:03Yeah, it was so incredible.
22:06It's, you know, it doesn't hurt the fact that it's Black History Month.
22:10There's just, like, all these things happening at once.
22:12We had not only the matchup that was just more than a quarterback, but more history made
22:16after Patrick Holmes became a Super Bowl MVP.
22:20We've never had a black quarterback who has done that twice, so that was certainly really
22:24special.
22:25And then, yeah, like, this idea that the women, I loved the commercial, but we all sort of
22:32loved the modes to the tributes, and Clueless is one of my favorite movies growing up,
22:37so I loved that commercial.
22:38What I loved was the NFL commercial that was sort of talking about women who were ushering
22:43in the next era, and Autumn Lockwood, who you're mentioning, is one of them.
22:47She's an Eagles strengthening conditioning coach, the first black woman to hold that position
22:52in the NFL, and because of that, I've become the first black woman to coach in a Super Bowl.
22:56So all this history being made, and also Cheryl Lee Wilde singing with every voice to sing,
23:02which is, of course, the black national anthem, exactly 100 years after it made its public
23:06debut.
23:07Like, there's just so much juju and great black history that was happening today.
23:11It really was.
23:12It was really good to see.
23:13I want to ask, even though you kind of stepped on this already, but what will you feel is
23:18your favorite part of Rihanna's performance, or any other musical highlights?
23:24Yeah, I think it's just, well, from the musical perspective, just a reminder how many bangers
23:30Rihanna has.
23:30Every single Rihanna song that she did, same for, like, maybe some of the stuff from the
23:35beginning, like, she had done maybe SOS and been taking me to a different era, but I feel
23:39like the people in their 30s have kind of been, like, the soundtrack to our college life
23:44to adult life transition, so just going on that journey with her.
23:48We never get to see her on the stage anymore.
23:50That was great.
23:51And then just being a mom, I thought it was so cool to see, not only what I did not know
23:57if it wasn't pregnant, I just thought, you know, heading in, what a cool moment to show
24:01women that, you know, if you have a baby and you can still be sexy and beautiful and empowered
24:07and do what you want, go back to work when you want on your own terms, I just think it
24:12was incredible.
24:13And then to see her do it pregnant, it's so amazing, you know?
24:16I watched Serena in the Aussie Open not knowing that she was pregnant until she pulled us
24:20afterwards, and we can just do such incredible things.
24:22And so we were out there, like, still staying and still, like, dancing and twerking, but
24:27also taking a seat when she needed to.
24:29Right.
24:30She was pregnant.
24:31It was great.
24:32And I think it was awesome for women to do that, in particular moms.
24:36All right.
24:36I thought the baby was going to come out when she started doing the butterfly.
24:39I was like, oh, girl, you're going to...
24:40Hey.
24:43Ah, I am done.
24:44There are worse ways for the baby to come.
24:45Right, right.
24:46Thank you so much for joining us today.
24:49We really appreciate you, and have a good one.
24:52Thanks for having me.
24:54Absolutely.
24:56All right, it's about that time, ladies and gentlemen.
24:59Thank you guys for tuning in to the Essence Black Woman in Sports Touchdowns and Turn Up
25:05Recap Show.
25:06And, of course, a very special thank you to tonight's sponsor, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar.
25:12I'm your host, Shantae Wayans, and you can find me everywhere, and I'm talking about social
25:17media, at CWans.
25:19Good night, y'all.
25:22Good night.
25:52You
