00:00Out on the heels of Tropical Cyclone Basiang's destructive path through the Visayas and Mindanao,
00:05several communities were left underwater as heavy rains lashed the region.
00:10Weather experts say the February cyclone was a rare twist of fate,
00:14catching many off guard as it broke the usual seasonal pattern.
00:18Rod Lagusa tells us more.
00:22Following the destructive impact of Tropical Cyclone Basiang in the Visayas and Mindanao,
00:27many areas were affected, including several places that experienced flooding.
00:32According to Pagasa Weather Specialist Benison J. Esterea,
00:35it is rare for a tropical cyclone to occur during the month of February.
00:39Based on data, the last time a tropical cyclone was recorded in February was back in 2021.
00:57He explained that the flooding that occurred was caused by several factors such as the susceptibility
01:12or how prone an area is to be affected.
01:15He said that there are areas considered highly susceptible because they lack adequate protection
01:20or defense against flooding or landslides.
01:22He also emphasized that an area's level of preparedness for the possible effects of a tropical cyclone is an important factor.
01:30Based on data from Pagasa's monitoring stations from 8 p.m. last night until 8 a.m. this morning,
01:35a total of 232 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in Sorigao City.
01:40As Tarahe explained, this was the period when Tropical Cyclone Basiang was about to make landfall in Caraga.
01:45This was followed by 132.7 millimeters of rainfall in Misamis Oriental and 127.8 millimeters in Butuan Agusan del Norte.
01:54At the same time, Pagasa continues to assess other developments related to the recorded amount of rainfall.
01:59From a tropical cyclone category, Basiang weakened into a tropical depression and expected to further downgrade into a low-pressure area.
02:06He said these factors contribute to the weakening of a tropical cyclone, adding that the
02:36high chance of landfall and prolonged interaction with land causes the system to weaken further.
02:42Rod Legu said, from the National TV Network, for a new and better Philippines.
