00:00all right we're back we're back we're back we're back we're back but the next panel is a little
00:09bit different uh and this one is kind of sort of for the ladies kind of sort of for the fellas
00:14so you know baldness right let's talk about big bald energy right so though it is revered as a
00:22symbol of youth and power renouncing your hair can be just as powerful so join me today as we
00:29explore how men can be bold in their baldness so first of the stage joining me I want to introduce
00:36Eric Martin he's an award-winning entrepreneur and founder of black and abroad can we get a round
00:42of applause for Eric next we have celebrity trainer and body transformation specialist Cory Kaye
00:59and last but certainly not least we have love at first first flight star Mahdi
01:08hello gentlemen how you doing how you doing so clearly I'm not bald I was not supposed to be
01:18the host of this so I can't really share in that experience with y'all but we're gonna have fun
01:23anyway yes indeed okay so let's talk about the bald journey when did you all go bald oh so uh mine
01:33wasn't necessarily by choice okay uh fortunately I wasn't I was never blessed with a solid hairline
01:39for some reason or another so um I was just like instead of trying to hang on to what trying to make
01:45something happen that wasn't happening let me go ahead and just cut it off but you got the connecting
01:48beard is it connected thank you you you can't be blessed with everything you can't be blessed
01:57with everything okay Cory what about you know mine was uh I think I my family genetics with the
02:01receded hairline it was just not working out for me so uh I made a decision talked over with God and
02:07said cut it off okay all right uh mine was a it was a little different so I always thought I was
02:15gonna go bald eventually because of my dad and people in my family so um a long time ago when I
02:21was like early 20s I just tried it out just to see how I would look with it right and I end up wearing
02:26it for a couple years like that because I fell in love with it but then I grew my hair back and fell in
02:31love with my hair again so when I had to lose it well when I lost it my only worry was uh was my girl
02:38gonna like it because she never saw me with the bald head so but that was I'm seeing a recurring theme
02:44here and it's the beard too right do you feel like for the baldness to work the beard gotta work too
02:52I think so yeah yeah okay why is that I mean it's a look it's it's the balance it's the whole look
02:59yes it's the balance it's the balance you don't have a naked face you need to put some clothes on
03:05you gotta have something on and you know I think too when we talk about self-esteem we really only talk
03:10about women right we don't talk about men and the things you know the alopecia conversation has
03:14been super prevalent with women right but for you all like you said you all didn't really have a
03:19choice so you say was it did it you know do things for your self-esteem to have to go bald yeah I mean
03:27honestly like like you said we don't have a conversation with men a lot um I mean society
03:33doesn't even really allow us to have those conversations or like you looked at as weak or
03:37whatever yeah but when it happened for me I was like damn I'm old now I'm officially old now and
03:44so uh I was like I'm gonna have to just move different um the the benefit of that is you save
03:49a lot of money you feel because if your haircuts be be hitting a lot and they keep getting more
03:55expensive I didn't realize how much money y'all were spending on haircuts oh yeah it's an experience
04:00so you it ain't just you go get a haircut no more it's a whole
04:03I've been seeing steam I've been seeing exfoliants I've been seeing all the things
04:08yeah what about you I mean for me it uh it was it was scary at first because I had to make sure I
04:14had the right head for it I say all the time I couldn't do it everybody don't have the bald head
04:19here right and uh it I wouldn't know I don't I felt it I think there is a bump somewhere somewhere back
04:27there yeah so we're gonna keep this going but I think uh for me it did help my confidence
04:32I'm gonna feel strong um it helped define me as I got older I didn't think about the whole fact of
04:39like oh I'm an old man now I was like I guess I'm grown grown because I got a bald head I was just
04:45like oh this look good I look good and mine for you what are some things that have helped you feel
04:52attractive or comfortable as you transition through the baldness and hair and baldness and hair
05:00well to maybe feel comfortable was um just knowing um like the people I was among in the bald head world
05:07it's like uh there's a whole bunch of greats Michael Jordan Tupac there you go you know Kobe
05:13and they they rocked it they owned it yeah great people yeah if they could do it I felt like I could
05:18do it and just uh when I was young you know when you're young nobody really talk about I want to
05:24rock a bald head it was mohawks and locks and but um I always looked at the bald head as a symbol of
05:32like a grown man yeah you know and being a grown man like rocking a bald head is I feel like I fit in
05:38it's like it's for me and it was meant for me to have it so and Corey you're a body transformation
05:43specialist that's true so so as someone who is heavily involved in image consulting and you know
05:51transforming things about image how what advice do you have upkeep advice for men who struggle with
05:58taking care of their bald heads I would say for men don't be lazy okay don't be lazy you have to you
06:04you should you should shave your head every other day right yeah you should shave it every other day
06:09we'll get into upkeep in a minute okay but but but honestly you know taking the time realizing like
06:14keeping your head shaved that's just like I want to brush my teeth I have to take a bath I have to
06:21take care of everything in my life grooming is very very important and it's just the the lack of
06:25you know uh wanting to to do it that men might struggle with yeah and I'm happy that you spoke about
06:31the shaving thing because from all of y'all I want to know what is your because it's skin it's like
06:37skincare right what is your skincare regimen for your head okay so rule number one know your hair
06:43pattern know the direction that your hair grows in okay because for a long time when I first started
06:47out I was cutting it the wrong way going backwards when I'm not supposed to you know black hair curls
06:52back into your skin if you cut it the wrong way yeah so for like a good three years I was literally
06:57cutting it the wrong way and then I didn't learn until later on to go with the go with the flow of
07:01your hair growth um and then also use um I use some called bentonite okay bentonite clay mix it with
07:08apple cider vinegar yeah put that joint on your head let it sit dry up it's gonna get hard and it
07:13basically exfoliates what doesn't it do it does we put it on our hair we put it on our skin we put it
07:19everywhere they got a drinkable version that that you can like clean your body it's okay good um way
07:25to like cleanse overall okay yeah and what's your regimen I mean I'm I'm I do it every other day I
07:31shave my head a lot okay um and I also wear hats a lot but I always make sure my head is like really
07:37clean but in the shower you know I use a Gillette Mach 5 okay um razor I like to exfoliate it steam
07:44before I do it kind of get it where it's smooth okay and I do it so much it's like it's it's part
07:50of my life okay what about you um I'm kind of the same as Corey uh I shave it every other day okay before
07:57um when I first started like I was lazy I do it a couple days ago by I start getting bumps stuff like
08:03that but I noticed once I started to take good care of it shave it every day um one of my good friends
08:09put me on uh skin tight right after I shave I put I put skin tight on and I never had a bump ever
08:15since and um just taking care of it every day lotion just like my face you know and I know that there
08:21are certain you know definitely certain stereotypes associated with baldness for you Eric as a businessman
08:27was there ever a moment where you faced stigmas associated with you being bald I wouldn't say a
08:33stigma um but like Madi said earlier it was it's it's almost like a different level of distinction
08:38so you know you kind of like it's people are I don't know in my personal experience it was just
08:45you know this guy's doing something you know they were more willing to hear what I had to say
08:48especially when you couple that with a nice blazer with you know maybe a tile or something it's like
08:52oh okay I see what you got going on so I did notice that it was a lot easier for me to navigate
08:58the the corporate space um for some reason and then it also is one less thing to worry about
09:03yeah you know like you ain't gotta like you said go spend whatever and then you know you spending time
09:08at the barber literally just go and go you know cut and go um and yeah so that's been my my experience
09:16and Madi you mentioned earlier the woman piece do the ladies like the baldness like what what have you
09:23all's experience has been with women and baldness um well I know my my lady loves it for sure
09:32and uh I mean I get a lot of compliments when I cut my hair the first time uh I actually started
09:38modeling okay so I always had a good experience with the bald head and um ladies of course but now
09:45it's all about one she's out there where's she at that's all right hey girl what about y'all I was
09:54about to say ladies what y'all think I know mine she like my hair like that okay okay so it seems like
10:01bald is it's definitely an advantage not a disadvantage right so what is advice for men who
10:09can't let it go as easy as y'all did there are a lot of men holding on to a lot of
10:16so bad but I ain't gonna I don't wanna I'm gonna say it right now okay you can take your hand like
10:20this and put on your forehead uh-huh okay your lining is here here you still have a room if you
10:27you can do from your eye bro okay then it then it's it's time to it's the five finger rule
10:33just if it's you gotta let it go bro okay stop saving that hair and as you all get older right
10:40and you know like you said things change right so the salt and pepper might come the all those things
10:49do you all plan on keeping the beards and and keeping this look going as you all mature I'm for
10:54sure I'm I'm looking forward to the salt and pepper I'm not gonna lie to you I don't know if you guys
10:59are yesterday the silver fox squad I don't know if you all have heard all them they were here
11:03there's a lot of salt and pepper beards and the ladies were loving it so I'm keep you gotta pay me
11:08to cut this off okay keep it okay but you know what that's an interesting concept so why why is it
11:16that when there is a man when you're getting older it's more distinction you're more respected
11:21but is that the same I know you moderating so I don't want to take it but is that the same like
11:25you know for women with getting older as a woman like do you feel like it's the opposite yes it is
11:31yeah that's messed up we got we got to do better yes yeah I agree I think I've definitely I think
11:37women now are definitely accepting gray a little bit more but it's definitely like you all are looking
11:42forward right to salt and pepper I don't know and ladies correct me if I'm wrong I am not looking
11:47forward to the day that I start going that's just wisdom that gray is just wisdom yeah for y'all maybe
11:53like it's not it hasn't been translated the same yeah um but but I definitely agree and I think
11:58there's also been kind of like an influx almost of like social groups of bald men celebrate have
12:05you all seen that honestly I haven't but I'm gonna go look for them there's there's have you guys heard
12:11they're like must love beards yeah but um but they Janice Jamila Janice does this um party called
12:18bad beards in New York I'm it's a thing yeah it is a thing what do you guys think about this social
12:24media craze of the bald the bald head with the beard I because I agree I only think it's being
12:31uplifted I think there are stipulations to baldness and I think it's the beard so how do you guys feel
12:38about this this with it anything that celebrates you know us being in it's natural who we are
12:45yep I'm with it yep it's literally who we are exactly I agree with that I think it's time for it I
12:51mean like I said I'm just a big fan of the bald head I think bald head is fly and it's looked at like
12:58people don't I want to have a bald head yeah but why not though yep you know it's not a that's a
13:04I said it looks good and I know that you all don't have to go to barbershops right we said
13:10one less line item right but do you all ever go periodically for the pampering aspect right do
13:16you all with you know like I said skincare for hair do you all ever embrace that aspect of the
13:21barbershop experience well yeah because you still got to do your yes for your beard like
13:25straight up um like you said you you can't be blessed with everything so you got the beard you
13:30got to double down on what's left yep and so yeah we still do the barbershop experience okay okay and
13:35when you go abroad right we know that in the United States this is a thing right the the bald head and
13:42the beards have you found that culturally things change kind of the the the preferences have you guys
13:49noticed as you guys have moved about that's universal okay everybody what it's different everywhere
13:56yeah it's a universal thing you know it's not just exclusive to us men go ball everywhere around
14:01the world so yeah um it does give like I said I keep going back to this distinction thing yeah um it
14:08works it works but about your question about going abroad one thing that I do notice as a black man
14:14is that there are so many um stereotypes because America sells the package the image of the black man to
14:20be packaged and sold like in one capacity yep so um I was just in Cannes France last week okay I live tomorrow for Cannes
14:28oh you did yeah and um I couldn't get a cab I was flagging down like you know like five cabs passed by I'm
14:36like damn I got a whole suit on you know what I mean like even as if that even matters but I had to walk all the
14:42way back sit up to my Airbnb because the cabs wouldn't pull over yeah so I don't know if that is a stereotype
14:48that associate with the bald head or just me being black in general sometimes yeah and as we close
14:53out I want each of you gentlemen to tell me your favorite thing about being bald and what big bald
15:00energy means to you I think being bald was um first of all it was the best decision ever made okay um
15:12and it became my look I got to own something for me not looking like no one else it became mine that
15:17built that confidence that built that swagger you know made me own being bald and big bald energy is
15:22me yeah you know also a bald head complimented muscles so it made sense
15:30um I would say the best thing about being bald for me uh I travel a lot so being abroad and not having
15:38my barber it's cool to not not need him I just take the razor to the head so I'm my own barber so for
15:44that part but um what big bald energy means to me like I've been saying the whole time just being
15:50proud of it you know your mindset with it not looking like it's a hindrance like oh man I got a bald head
15:57nah I got a bald head like it's nice how you say it right it's how you say it yeah to me it just means
16:04of walking in your full authentic self right there's nothing you can't ain't nothing to hide you got a
16:10bald head as you bury your head to the world so it's like just being and standing in your true
16:15authenticity being who you are and wasting but spending less time on this and spending more time
16:22on this yeah yeah can we get a round of applause for these gentlemen y'all thank you all so much for
16:30joining us I hope I hope I did it justice I know I'm no rich and I'm certainly not bald but I hope I did
16:35it no you we did good all right well thank you gentlemen
