00:00:30Grazie a tutti.
00:01:00I'll also be your new cross-country coach this season.
00:01:03It's nice to meet you.
00:01:05Two quick questions.
00:01:07First, who I'll hear was on the team last year?
00:01:09Please raise your hands.
00:01:13Everybody.
00:01:14Nobody here is new?
00:01:15No.
00:01:16Why no freshmen?
00:01:17The middle school team wasn't very good last year.
00:01:19None of the girls wanted to run.
00:01:20Plus, nobody recruited them.
00:01:22I see.
00:01:24You mind me asking, but have you ever coached cross-country before?
00:01:28No.
00:01:30No, this will be my first time.
00:01:33By the way, how far is your race?
00:01:375K.
00:01:395K.
00:01:41What's 5K?
00:01:42How far is that?
00:01:435,000 meters.
00:01:453.1 miles.
00:01:46And this is a high school team, right?
00:01:49Right.
00:01:50Thank you.
00:01:52Good.
00:01:52That is helpful information.
00:01:55This second question may seem a bit premature, but do you girls want to be a strong contender
00:02:01to win the state meet this year?
00:02:03We finished 10th last year.
00:02:04Yeah, Eastern Valley killed us.
00:02:07Eastern Valley killed everybody.
00:02:09You finished 162 points behind Eastern Valley.
00:02:12They've got four of their top seven girls returning this year.
00:02:14Last year, you all had three freshmen, two sophomores, a junior, and a senior in your top seven,
00:02:18which means that six of you are back.
00:02:20Coach Hollow was your coach.
00:02:22He was here for five years.
00:02:23Before that, this program was run by Coach Pratt, who founded it in 1982 and ran it until
00:02:27he retired.
00:02:28Lauren Chills Academy is an all-girls Christian school and a member of the private schools
00:02:33association, but has never won the state meet.
00:02:36Does that sound about right?
00:02:38Yeah.
00:02:39Which takes me back to my question.
00:02:41Do you girls want to be a strong contender to win state meet this year?
00:02:44Well, yeah.
00:02:45Okay, I heard a one yeah.
00:02:47Anybody else?
00:02:49Yes.
00:02:51Okay, that sounds convincing enough.
00:02:53For the state meet, then we shall train.
00:02:55Before I get your names and some more information, let's just take a little jog here, do a walk
00:03:00around the field, let me watch you run.
00:03:02Just go very easy.
00:03:04Okay?
00:03:04Okay, girls.
00:03:05Let's go.
00:03:25Your name is?
00:03:48Kristen Simms.
00:03:49Kristen, did you win state last year?
00:03:51No, I finished.
00:03:52Six?
00:03:53Yeah, I don't understand how you didn't win state, because if what you just ran was easy,
00:03:57when you run hard, it must be pretty fast.
00:03:59Well, I ran track in the spring, and I've been training since the season ended, so I'm
00:04:02in good shape.
00:04:04All right.
00:04:05Next time I ask you to go easy, just go easy, okay?
00:04:09All right, girls, gather up.
00:04:10One by one, I want you to tell me your name and grade.
00:04:18Anna Glass, junior.
00:04:20Heidi Olsen, junior.
00:04:22Kristen Simms, senior.
00:04:23Shelby Opal, sophomore.
00:04:25Caitlin Vann, sophomore.
00:04:26Rebecca Shackelford, sophomore.
00:04:28Rachel Ramirez, junior.
00:04:30Julianne Barnett, sophomore.
00:04:31Well, hey.
00:04:39How was cross-country practice?
00:04:41Easy.
00:04:42All we did was run 30 minutes.
00:04:44What do you think of the new coach?
00:04:46I don't like her.
00:04:48Her?
00:04:48Yeah.
00:04:50Dad, she's right out of college, never coached before, and she doesn't know what she's doing.
00:04:55What?
00:04:55Yeah, I felt like I was walking today.
00:04:58Why didn't you pick up the pace and make it a good workout?
00:05:00I tried to, but she kept telling me to slow down.
00:05:03Well, if she doesn't know what she's doing, you just do what you know.
00:05:06Oh, I will.
00:05:07You can count on it.
00:05:08What about Anna and the other girls?
00:05:11They ran easy.
00:05:12I tried to get them to go faster, but they wouldn't.
00:05:16Why did Holloway have to take that other job?
00:05:19I miss him.
00:05:20And what's Prater doing?
00:05:22Hiring a rookie?
00:05:24Well, don't worry.
00:05:25I'll have a talk with your new coach.
00:05:28I'm telling you, Chase wants to ask you out.
00:05:30He does not.
00:05:31Yes, he does.
00:05:32Anna, how do you know?
00:05:33Word gets around.
00:05:35Well, I can't even if he does.
00:05:36Why not?
00:05:37Because my dad is not going to let me date at 15 years old.
00:05:40Mine won't.
00:05:40Mine won't?
00:05:41How come yours will?
00:05:42Because mine doesn't care.
00:05:43What about your dad?
00:05:44He doesn't care either.
00:05:45But my mom does.
00:05:46She cares about everything.
00:05:47Would she let you date?
00:05:49No.
00:05:50Why not?
00:05:50Because I'm only 15.
00:05:52See?
00:05:53Well, I wish my dad cared.
00:05:54How come he doesn't?
00:05:55I mean, you know where he lives.
00:05:57New days, same more.
00:05:58How long have they been divorced?
00:05:59Too long.
00:06:00Do you see him often?
00:06:02Not much.
00:06:02Two or three times a year.
00:06:03Does your mom care about what you do?
00:06:05Sort of, but she's busy working and dating around.
00:06:09He's gonna ask you out.
00:06:11To run cross country and be successful, you need two things.
00:06:16Endurance and strength.
00:06:17So when the state meet, we're gonna need one other thing, and that's time.
00:06:20Time to train and build up to the competitive level that we're gonna need to be at.
00:06:23It's very, very important that you make every practice.
00:06:26You're eating right.
00:06:27You're getting good sleep at night.
00:06:29Starting things off, we're gonna run slow and easy so we prevent any injuries.
00:06:32Any questions?
00:06:33Where do you want us to run today?
00:06:36I marked up a course like you ran last year.
00:06:38Just follow my flags.
00:06:39You're gonna start here.
00:06:40Run down the road.
00:06:41Do the big loop.
00:06:42In the back, you'll see my one mile mark.
00:06:44Keep coming around.
00:06:46Two mile marks just up here.
00:06:48Just after the two mile mark, I've got you set to run up this big hill.
00:06:51Go all the way to the top.
00:06:52Come back down.
00:06:53Repeat the whole thing again.
00:06:55Coach, I, uh, hate hills.
00:06:56Do we really have to do it two times?
00:06:59Yes, and just think in the near future you'll be doing this whole thing three times.
00:07:03Woo!
00:07:06State meets at Equestrian Park this year.
00:07:08Any of your girls ever run that course before?
00:07:11No.
00:07:12No?
00:07:14Make sure you do that hill two times.
00:07:17Remember, we're running slow and easy, not hard.
00:07:22Oh, wait, wait, there's one more thing.
00:07:25And this is really important.
00:07:26I'm only gonna say this once.
00:07:29We've got one goal this year.
00:07:31That's when the state meet.
00:07:33Remember the goal.
00:07:35Good afternoon.
00:08:01Neil Sims.
00:08:02Courtney's Beth Donnelly.
00:08:03My daughter's Kristen.
00:08:05So, uh, you're the new coach.
00:08:07Yes, sir.
00:08:08Yeah, I heard that you've never coached cross country before.
00:08:12You must feel like a kid with a new toy then, huh?
00:08:16You know, we've got a great program here.
00:08:19It has been for years.
00:08:21Now, we don't have a lot of girls on the team, but this group, they won the regional meet last year,
00:08:25and I think they could be top five in the state this year if they get some good training.
00:08:29Well, I plan to do the best I can.
00:08:32Yeah, speaking of plan, do you have one?
00:08:35Do you know what needs to be done?
00:08:37I have an idea.
00:08:38Well, Kristen could be a big help.
00:08:40She's got a shot at the state individual title this year, and, uh, she'll have to train real hard.
00:08:45Now, I worked with her in the off-season, and, well, of course, Holloway, he was a great coach.
00:08:50He worked them real hard.
00:08:52Yeah, I, uh, I don't believe running girls on the ground is proper training.
00:08:57Gonna take care of these girls, and we'll still be competitive.
00:09:00Nice to meet you.
00:09:04The policy of this school is to first offer all coaching jobs to teachers on staff.
00:09:09But she doesn't know what she's doing.
00:09:10Well, her background looked pretty impressive to me.
00:09:13Her background looked good.
00:09:15What, did she run a year in middle school?
00:09:17Oh, come on, Neil.
00:09:19You know what the problem is with this athletic department?
00:09:21You just don't care about the girls enough.
00:09:23My daughter could get a scholarship, but you treat cross-country like some second-rate sport.
00:09:28I am just following the policy of the school.
00:09:31Ken, it is still summer.
00:09:32You can find another coach, one who knows how to train, and do it right.
00:09:35Coach Donnelly just started.
00:09:37Why don't you give her a chance?
00:09:39Just from what they've done so far, that is enough for me to see.
00:09:41My daughter has to do her own workouts on the side.
00:09:45We need to get Holloway back here, or somebody like him.
00:09:48Neil, look.
00:09:49We're a school.
00:09:50We are not a cross-country institution.
00:09:52We hired this woman to fill a position in science that we knew was coming open in the fall.
00:09:56When I sent out a letter seeking a new cross-country coach, she responded.
00:10:00Her credentials looked good, so we hired her.
00:10:02She is the coach.
00:10:03Now, you have a problem with that, take it up with the principal.
00:10:08Rebecca, didn't I ask you to do the dishes after dinner?
00:10:15Oh, yeah, sorry.
00:10:16I forgot.
00:10:17You forgot?
00:10:18Yes, I'm sorry.
00:10:20How did you forget?
00:10:21You have nothing to do all day except run.
00:10:23I'm sorry, I really forgot.
00:10:25Well, what if I forgot to make meals at night?
00:10:27What about that, huh?
00:10:28I mean, I asked you to do one thing, and you can't even do it.
00:10:31Now, get out there and do it!
00:10:38Anna!
00:10:56Coming!
00:11:01Oh, perfect!
00:11:02You're both here!
00:11:03What's up?
00:11:04I'm about to work out.
00:11:04You guys should come with.
00:11:05No?
00:11:06Ma abbiamo presto dopo oggi.
00:11:08Sì, ma non è difficile.
00:11:10Abbiamo bisogno di fare un buon workout in.
00:11:12Non voglio fare due giorni oggi.
00:11:14Sì.
00:11:15Sì, possiamo fare molto bene a State questo anno.
00:11:37Noi, come on.
00:11:40Let's go.
00:11:41Sì, credo che dovremmo fare quello che la coach wants us to do.
00:11:44Ok, look.
00:11:46Noi non sono state mette con lei.
00:11:48È la prima volta che ha mai coachato.
00:11:50E lei non conoscevano nulla.
00:11:53Quindi, let's go.
00:12:00Allora, good job!
00:12:02Good job.
00:12:03Good job, everybody.
00:12:04Same time tomorrow.
00:12:06Heidi, are you ok?
00:12:08Yeah, I'm fine.
00:12:09You look a little stiff to me.
00:12:11I'm ok.
00:12:12Maybe a little tight.
00:12:13I just need to stretch more.
00:12:15You're going easy out there, right?
00:12:17This is the exact thing I'm trying to avoid.
00:12:19Yeah, coach.
00:12:20I'm going easy.
00:12:21Ok.
00:12:22Well, keep me posted.
00:12:23Let me know if it bothers you tomorrow.
00:12:24I will.
00:12:25We shouldn't have run with Kristin.
00:12:26It's no luck.
00:12:27Well, I said tonight.
00:12:28It should be ok.
00:12:29What we did with you today was too hard.
00:12:30No, it wasn't.
00:12:31You just aren't in shape yet.
00:12:32Shelby, what's up?
00:12:33Nothing much.
00:12:34Where you going?
00:12:35My house.
00:12:36Don't you have running practice?
00:12:37Yeah, but that's later today.
00:12:38Ok, then why don't you come on up and hang with us.
00:13:03No, I can't.
00:13:04What do you mean you can't?
00:13:06I can't.
00:13:07You can't what?
00:13:08Hang with us?
00:13:09You know what I mean.
00:13:11No, I don't know what you mean.
00:13:13What she means is that she can't.
00:13:15And she has a very good reason why she can't.
00:13:17And you should know what she means by saying she can't.
00:13:19Understand?
00:13:20No.
00:13:21Too bad.
00:13:22See ya.
00:13:24Hey, Shelby.
00:13:27I can't.
00:13:37How's your leg today?
00:13:43It's ok.
00:13:44It feels better.
00:13:45Still sore?
00:13:46A little, but it does feel better.
00:13:47Okay.
00:13:48We've got another long run today, so just take it easy out there.
00:14:02I will.
00:14:03How about you, Anna?
00:14:04I'm fine.
00:14:05You know, I just thought of something.
00:14:11Whenever I was in high school, I played basketball, and I get sore muscles a lot.
00:14:16And then I figured it out.
00:14:17It was always on days after I had done a double workout.
00:14:20So I know just how you feel.
00:14:23I'm fine.
00:14:24I'm fine.
00:14:25I'm fine.
00:14:26I'm fine.
00:14:27I'm fine.
00:14:28I'm fine.
00:14:29Okay, girls.
00:14:30For more than a month, we've been building a foundation.
00:14:49Today we start a key workout we're going to be doing a lot this year called Cruise Intervals.
00:14:52Each interval is one mile, and you run it at tempo pace.
00:14:56Tempo pace is approximately 30 seconds slower per mile than your current 5k race pace.
00:15:02You're going to run one mile, rest one minute.
00:15:05Run your second mile, rest one minute.
00:15:07You're going to run your third and final mile.
00:15:09You're going to start right here at this flag.
00:15:11Run the mile course that we've got marked off, finish right there at that flag.
00:15:16First flag out there, it's 100 meters.
00:15:18To me, this is the most important part of the race.
00:15:21I want you to hit it in the time I tell you.
00:15:24Maintain that pace for the rest of the way.
00:15:26We're going to use our watches, make sure we're on pace.
00:15:28There's no sprinting in at the end of this.
00:15:30This is a tempo run, even pacing all the way.
00:15:34Hey coach, what do you mean by even pacing?
00:15:36Do you know what pace you were in your mile splits in last year?
00:15:39No, ma'am.
00:15:40I do.
00:15:41My second mile is usually 25 to 30 seconds slower than my first.
00:15:44Which tells me you went out too fast.
00:15:46I finished sixth in state.
00:15:48But if you would have run even pacing, you probably could have finished even higher.
00:15:51Do you know when a car gets its best gas mileage?
00:15:54When it's on the interstate cruising at 65 miles per hour.
00:15:57Not when it's speeding up and slowing down.
00:15:59And the same thing is true with running.
00:16:00In cross country, a lot of these kids go out very fast, they settle into a pace, and they all slow down.
00:16:06It's not how we want to run.
00:16:08We're going to go out at the correct pace, maintain that pace for the entire way.
00:16:12Even pacing.
00:16:13Okay, check my chart for your 100 meter split, your mile split.
00:16:1724 seconds and a 624 mile.
00:16:19That's right.
00:16:20I can walk faster than that.
00:16:22Anna, you see your splits?
00:16:23Yes, ma'am.
00:16:2425 and 640.
00:16:29Once you've got your pacing, let's get on the line.
00:16:32Well, this will be easy.
00:16:36Tempo runs build endurance.
00:16:38They're very important.
00:16:39Probably the most important workout that we'll do.
00:16:41But for them to be effective, you have got to do them right.
00:16:45Do not, I repeat, do not run faster than the pacing I've given you that defeats the purpose of a tempo run.
00:16:53Let's run to test 100 meters to check our pacing.
00:16:56Mark, set, go.
00:16:59Stop, stop.
00:17:00All of you are too fast.
00:17:01Anna, too fast.
00:17:02Heidi, too fast.
00:17:03Rebecca, Kristen, way too fast.
00:17:04All right.
00:17:05All of you, back on the line.
00:17:06Okay, I'm going to let you go the full 100 meters this time.
00:17:08When you get there, you're two seconds too fast.
00:17:10Stop, come back, start again.
00:17:11If you're within a second on either side, adjust slightly, keep going.
00:17:15Mark, set, go.
00:17:36Go.
00:18:03611.
00:18:04That's 13 seconds faster than I want you to run.
00:18:06This is too easy.
00:18:08This is a tempo run, not a mile race.
00:18:10You've got to get the pacing right.
00:18:12I literally cannot run that slow.
00:18:14Rest one minute and go again.
00:18:16This time, hit 624.
00:18:26642.
00:18:27Way to go, Anna.
00:18:28Rest one minute, then go again.
00:18:30Come on, Heidi.
00:18:35651.
00:18:36Good job, Heidi.
00:18:37I'm three seconds slow.
00:18:39No, come on.
00:18:40This is your first try.
00:18:41You're close.
00:18:45Good job, Rebecca.
00:18:46Good job, Caitlin.
00:18:47658.
00:18:50Way to go, Shelby.
00:18:51704.
00:18:52Right on pace.
00:19:00No, it's not.
00:19:01It's too slow.
00:19:02I'm not even tired.
00:19:03You're supposed to be running a 624.
00:19:05You've got one more.
00:19:06Do it right this time.
00:19:07No, it's not.
00:19:08It's too slow.
00:19:09I'm not even tired.
00:19:10You're supposed to be running a 624.
00:19:11You've got one more.
00:19:12Do it right this time.
00:19:14Yeah.
00:19:15I'm not even tired, you're supposed to be running a 624 you've got one more, do it right this time
00:19:45You can't kick Kristen Simms off the team
00:19:48She is the best runner in the history of this school
00:19:50And it's her senior year
00:19:52She's defiant
00:19:52Let's make arrangements for her to do her own workouts then
00:19:56And we'll keep everybody happy
00:19:57No, I'm sorry Mr. Prater, it does not work that way
00:19:59This has gotten out of hand
00:20:00Agreed, it should have been taken care of a long time ago
00:20:04But I'm not her parent
00:20:06I'm just her former coach
00:20:07I want you to put her back on the team
00:20:10Sorry, I can't do it, she's off
00:20:12Kristen can run track and get her scholarship there
00:20:15And it's not going to be a problem because I'm not coaching track
00:20:18You probably won't be coaching cross country here next year either
00:20:21Mr. Prater, you cannot let parents dictate how you do your job or how I do mine
00:20:26Kristen doesn't want to do the workouts so she's off the team
00:20:29Look, if you're going to fire me
00:20:31Do it after this season but not now
00:20:34I've already invested five weeks of my time this summer
00:20:37And so have these girls
00:20:38If you think that Neil Simms is going to let this go
00:20:41You're in for a big surprise
00:20:43And if Neil Simms were the coach of this team
00:20:46And Anna Glass were talking back, not doing the workouts
00:20:49What do you think you'd do about that?
00:20:52Make sure you ask him next time he calls
00:20:54Kristen Simms is off the team
00:20:56Where are the other girls?
00:21:14They quit
00:21:16What?
00:21:21They quit
00:21:22All of them?
00:21:30Yeah
00:21:30Why?
00:21:33Kristen got them all to quit
00:21:34She tried to get us to quit too
00:21:37Yeah, but we don't want to
00:21:39We want to run
00:21:40So it's just the five of you?
00:21:43Yeah
00:21:44And everybody else quit
00:21:45Yes, ma'am
00:21:47Mm-hmm
00:22:08Mm-hmm
00:22:09We only need five girls to score in a meet.
00:22:25So let's make two new rules right now.
00:22:28Make a fist like this.
00:22:30Good.
00:22:31Put all your fists together side by side.
00:22:35We're a team.
00:22:37Okay?
00:22:39Nobody on this team quits.
00:22:42Rule number one, agreed?
00:22:43He's been.
00:22:44Okay.
00:22:45Second rule.
00:22:46Nobody.
00:22:47I mean nobody ever gets sick.
00:22:52All right, let's make one other rule.
00:22:55Why was Kristen dismissed from this team and why did all those other girls quit?
00:23:00Maybe because for them it was all about self.
00:23:04Let's change that right now.
00:23:051 Corinthians chapter 10, verse 31.
00:23:11Whether you eat or drink, whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
00:23:171031.
00:23:18What?
00:23:191 Corinthians chapter 10, verse 31.
00:23:22Whether you eat or drink, or run, whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
00:23:30Okay, that's going to take the focus off self.
00:23:32It's going to put on the one it's supposed to be on, and that's the Lord.
00:23:36What do you guys say?
00:23:37Are you guys still running?
00:23:57You guys still running?
00:24:01Yeah, how's practice?
00:24:04It's okay.
00:24:04We're sorry you're not there.
00:24:07We have our first meet tomorrow.
00:24:09You coming?
00:24:10Yeah, right.
00:24:11I'll see you guys on track.
00:24:18Shelby!
00:24:27Go out with me this weekend.
00:24:31What?
00:24:32Go out with me this weekend.
00:24:33I can't.
00:24:35Can't or won't?
00:24:36Can't.
00:24:37Why?
00:24:38I have a meet.
00:24:39Those are in the morning.
00:24:40Talking about at night.
00:24:41I can't.
00:24:42Why?
00:24:43You don't get it, do you?
00:24:45Get what?
00:24:49My dad won't let me date yet.
00:24:52He doesn't have to know.
00:24:53Just walk down to my house tomorrow night around 6 o'clock.
00:24:57I'll be waiting for you.
00:24:59I don't know.
00:25:026 o'clock.
00:25:03I can't.
00:25:05Don't be late.
00:25:13Hey, did you hear about Zoyana?
00:25:15What about her?
00:25:16Jessie told me she started smoking weed this summer.
00:25:18What?
00:25:19That's what Jessie said.
00:25:21Is she sure?
00:25:21Well, her and Savannah were hanging out over the summer
00:25:24and they met a couple of guys.
00:25:26Savannah started dating one of them
00:25:27and he got her into it.
00:25:28She's still dating him?
00:25:30No, but she's still smoking.
00:25:32And Jessie's sure?
00:25:33Yeah.
00:25:35Man, we used to be so close to Savannah.
00:25:39Yeah, but...
00:25:41she's changed.
00:25:43Somebody just needs to talk to her.
00:25:46She's, it's behind me in history.
00:25:47Hey, coach.
00:26:01What are we doing today?
00:26:02We're going easy, right?
00:26:03I'm nervous.
00:26:04What about?
00:26:05Coach.
00:26:05How's everybody doing?
00:26:06Good, but what are we doing today?
00:26:08About five miles.
00:26:09On the day before the meet?
00:26:10We're going for a ride for about five miles.
00:26:12Everybody hop in.
00:26:13What's this?
00:26:35This is today's practice.
00:26:37We're going to play golf.
00:26:38Is that what you're doing here?
00:26:40No, really?
00:26:41Are we going to play golf?
00:26:42Really, we are going to play golf.
00:26:53Hey, coach.
00:26:53I have a meeting to ask you.
00:26:55Did you ever run cross-country in high school?
00:26:57Yeah, I did.
00:26:58Were you any good?
00:26:59It was okay.
00:27:00So, not that good, huh?
00:27:02Not that good is not that good,
00:27:04but okay is okay, right?
00:27:06Right.
00:27:06I think the more appropriate question at the moment
00:27:08is how good am I at mini-golf?
00:27:10Someone said you'll never make it
00:27:25Someone else said you might as well give up
00:27:29And the words you've heard so often
00:27:34Tried to define you
00:27:36Until you've had enough
00:27:38The truth is
00:27:40It's such a different story
00:27:42It starts with love
00:27:44And it never ends
00:27:49You're a beautiful warrior, girl
00:27:53Says the maker of all the world
00:27:55And he came to set you free
00:27:57Forever and permanently
00:28:00Ain't nothing they can say
00:28:02That matters anyway
00:28:04Cause the king of all the world
00:28:06Says you're a beautiful warrior, girl
00:28:09You should have seen the girls golfing today
00:28:24They had the best time
00:28:25I'm glad for them
00:28:26Me too
00:28:27It was good team bonding
00:28:28Plus, I think it'll help alleviate some nerves
00:28:30There's
00:28:33Or yours
00:28:34Okay
00:28:40You see our mark to 100 meters
00:28:42Let's check our watches
00:28:43Just to make sure we're on pace
00:28:44We're gonna run a couple practice starts
00:28:46Before the race
00:28:47Just to make sure we've got our pacing down
00:28:48Alright, pacing for today
00:28:50Anna, 25 seconds and a 640 mile
00:28:53Heidi, 25 and a half seconds and a 648
00:28:56Wait, coach, you want me to run a 640 first mile in the race today?
00:29:00Yes
00:29:00That's too slow, I need to run faster
00:29:02I want you to run a 640 all three miles today
00:29:05Remember, even pacing
00:29:06Coach, that's my tempo pace, and I'll get killed
00:29:09No, you won't
00:29:10You'll finish fine
00:29:11I could be in the top ten today
00:29:13I want you to run the pacing I'm telling you to
00:29:15Why?
00:29:17Remember the goal
00:29:18Coach
00:29:19Anna
00:29:23Many times in God's word
00:29:26He asks us to trust Him
00:29:27Even though we don't understand
00:29:30Or we don't know what's going on
00:29:32And just like that
00:29:33I'm asking you to trust me
00:29:34And remember the goal
00:29:36Yes, ma'am
00:29:39Okay
00:29:40Okay, uh
00:29:43Rebecca
00:29:44Caitlin, 26 and a 656
00:29:47Shelby, 26 and a half
00:29:49And a 704
00:29:50Rebecca
00:30:00You have got to get out of there a lot faster than what you did
00:30:04I kept telling you to pick it up
00:30:05What was wrong with you today?
00:30:07Nothing
00:30:07Well, you know you can't get caught back in the pack like that
00:30:10I mean, look where you came in
00:30:11Come on
00:30:12I just ran how the coach wanted me to run
00:30:14Well, if you're going to run like that
00:30:16There is no point in even being on this team
00:30:18I just did what she said
00:30:19Give me a break
00:30:20You were awful
00:30:30Rebecca, you ran a nice race today
00:30:32I ran horrible
00:30:33No, you ran just like I wanted you to
00:30:36And you were right on pace
00:30:37Good job
00:30:37Hey, good job
00:30:41Hey, coach
00:30:46May I have a word with you?
00:30:48Yeah
00:30:48Why did you have Anna run so slow today?
00:30:52She finished 37th
00:30:53She could have been top five
00:30:54She ran a very smart race
00:30:57She did a great job
00:30:58She was right on pace
00:31:00And I'm proud of her 37th
00:31:01Yeah, but coach
00:31:03This is not what we signed up for
00:31:05What did you sign up for, Mr. Glass?
00:31:08Well, not coming in 37th
00:31:09When she can be top five
00:31:10Winning state
00:31:12It takes training
00:31:13And patience
00:31:14Today wasn't about winning
00:31:16Then what was it about?
00:31:18I mean, why are we running
00:31:19If we're not running to win?
00:31:21We're running to do our best
00:31:22And if that means winning
00:31:23Great
00:31:24But if that means coming in 37th
00:31:26That's fine too
00:31:27Anna did a great job
00:31:29Based on the training
00:31:30That she's been doing
00:31:30And on the pace that I've given her
00:31:32It looked like she was jogging out there
00:31:35Cross country is
00:31:37Is a lot like a puzzle
00:31:39Mr. Glass
00:31:39You've got to put it together
00:31:40One piece at a time
00:31:41Yeah, well, 37th
00:31:43Is not the desired result
00:31:45No, it's not
00:31:46But a 640 mile pace was
00:31:48And your daughter did that beautifully
00:31:50You should tell her that
00:31:53Sometime before this day ends
00:31:54Excuse me
00:31:56I don't know about this woman
00:32:05Neil Simms has already talked to the principal
00:32:08And the board
00:32:08Hey
00:32:18I heard from every parent this morning
00:32:30Before I finished my first cup of coffee
00:32:32They say you deliberately had the girls run really slow in the race
00:32:35Now why would you do that?
00:32:36Because that's the only way they'll get faster
00:32:38Because that's the only way that they're going to get faster
00:32:41That doesn't make sense
00:32:43Cross country is a lot like Christianity
00:32:46Mr. Prater
00:32:47It doesn't make a lot of sense
00:32:48For example
00:32:50The way up is down
00:32:51What's that supposed to mean?
00:32:54Well, do you remember in the Bible when it says
00:32:57Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord
00:32:59That he may exalt you in due time?
00:33:00Humble yourself that he may exalt you
00:33:03The way up is down
00:33:05It's the same thing with cross country
00:33:07In order to get faster you have to train slower
00:33:09Coach
00:33:10I need an explanation
00:33:12These parents, they deserve one
00:33:14No disrespect sir
00:33:16But these parents have no idea what it takes
00:33:18To when they think
00:33:19The only way you get faster
00:33:20Is to run yourself in the ground
00:33:22Kill yourself
00:33:22Now, I just told you
00:33:24To get faster you have to train slower
00:33:26This may not make sense to you
00:33:27May not make sense to these parents
00:33:29May not even make sense to these runners
00:33:31But by the time statement rolls around it will
00:33:33Now if you'll excuse me
00:33:36I have a class to teach
00:33:44Hey, Savannah, you know we only have five girls on our cross country team
00:33:51You should come out for it
00:33:53The coach would totally let you join
00:33:54What?
00:33:56Come out for cross country
00:33:57You'd like it
00:33:58You're joking
00:33:58No, it's a great sport and there are a lot of positives to it
00:34:03What's positive about running all the time and getting tired and sweaty?
00:34:08I mean, it's healthy for one
00:34:09It's good exercise
00:34:11Keep you out of trouble
00:34:12You'll get to be part of a team
00:34:14No, thanks
00:34:16Where are the other girls?
00:34:25Oh, they're coming
00:34:26Coach, can I talk with you a minute?
00:34:30Yeah, of course
00:34:30Um, actually
00:34:33I got something for you and the girls
00:34:35Oh, cool
00:34:38Thank you
00:34:39You're welcome
00:34:40What's up?
00:34:42Well, I have a friend I want to try and help
00:34:46We used to be the best of friends
00:34:48And then she started hanging out with a different crowd
00:34:51And she's into things she shouldn't be
00:34:54I feel if I say something, she's just going to push me farther away
00:34:58If it's on your heart to talk to her, then I would
00:35:01Well, I actually did ask her in class today if she wanted to join her team
00:35:05Yeah?
00:35:06What'd she say?
00:35:07No, she's not interested
00:35:09But I mean, that's not really what I wanted to talk to her about
00:35:13I don't know, I just
00:35:15I feel like she's going to reject what I say
00:35:17Well, if you're worried about upsetting your friends
00:35:20Remember, Jesus was perfect
00:35:22People hated him
00:35:23So you'll be in good company
00:35:25Think about that for a second, Anna
00:35:28Jesus Christ came to earth
00:35:31God in human flesh
00:35:32Perfect
00:35:34Sinless
00:35:35Always said the right thing
00:35:36Did the right thing
00:35:38Died on the cross for our sins
00:35:40He was buried
00:35:41Rose again
00:35:43And what was the result?
00:35:45Most people hated him
00:35:46And when I was a junior in high school
00:35:50One of my friends shared the gospel with me
00:35:52And God let me see that I was a sinner
00:35:55And I needed a savior
00:35:57So, don't be afraid of rejection
00:36:01Just talk to your friend
00:36:03The Lord sees your heart
00:36:05Thanks, Coach
00:36:07And Anna
00:36:11If talking to her doesn't work
00:36:14There is one more thing you can do
00:36:16What are we doing today, Coach?
00:36:20Cruise intervals
00:36:21Again?
00:36:22I know how much you love them
00:36:24They're okay, we just do them a lot
00:36:26Yeah, but today we do them with a twist
00:36:28Ooh, what's that?
00:36:29Today we're going to do them five times
00:36:30What?
00:36:31You girls can do this
00:36:32I have faith in you
00:36:33Same pace as the others?
00:36:35Yeah, same pace
00:36:35I'm not going to be able to do the fifth one
00:36:38Me either
00:36:38I won't be able to do it, Coach
00:36:40It'll be too hard
00:36:41But you will try, right?
00:36:44Right?
00:36:46There will be a time for rest
00:36:49It's not today
00:36:50Maybe a time to just give up and turn and walk away
00:37:00Every choice will change your future
00:37:05Every day is part of the plan
00:37:09To get you to the best in you
00:37:13So you realize you can
00:37:17Run on
00:37:19Every step has brought you here
00:37:23Run on
00:37:26And the finish line is near
00:37:31Just run on
00:37:35Keep on going
00:37:37Just run on
00:37:39Don't stop moving
00:37:41Just run on
00:37:43Run on
00:37:45Run on
00:37:47Good job today
00:38:11Good job everybody
00:38:12That was awesome
00:38:13Coach, that was hard
00:38:14But you did it
00:38:15Yeah, but it was really hard
00:38:17Well, winning state meets
00:38:18Is going to be really hard
00:38:19But it's going to be such a great feeling
00:38:21You're never going to forget it
00:38:23Coach, I was dying on that last one
00:38:25But you did it
00:38:26Yeah, but I was about five seconds slower
00:38:28Than I was supposed to be
00:38:29But you're going to get better
00:38:31We're going to keep working
00:38:32And you're doing great
00:38:33All of you are doing great
00:38:35Hey, Coach
00:38:36Are you sure you know what you're doing?
00:38:38I mean, because my mom sure doesn't think so
00:38:39Um, I'm sorry
00:38:44I didn't mean for her to come out like that
00:38:46All right
00:38:53Gather around here for a minute
00:38:55There's a story in the Bible
00:39:03Where a 12-year-old girl had died
00:39:05And as was custom for that day
00:39:07People gathered outside the house
00:39:09And were crying
00:39:10When Jesus approached
00:39:12He said, why are you weeping?
00:39:13She's not dead, but asleep
00:39:15The people laughed at him
00:39:17Then Jesus went inside
00:39:20And raised the girl from the dead
00:39:21Any of you girls familiar with that story?
00:39:24Yeah, I've read it before
00:39:25Me too
00:39:27When Jesus said the girl was sleeping
00:39:30The Bible says
00:39:31They laughed at him to scorn
00:39:32They laughed at him
00:39:35Mocked him
00:39:38Ridiculed him
00:39:39Were probably hateful towards him
00:39:42Said he didn't know what he was talking about
00:39:45Didn't know what he was doing
00:39:47Do any of you girls know why they did this to him?
00:39:53No, ma'am
00:39:53Because Jesus Christ did things the exact opposite from the world
00:39:59The world was going in this direction
00:40:01He was going in that one
00:40:02You see, when you follow Christ in this life
00:40:07You are either going against the world
00:40:09Or in the opposite direction of it
00:40:11But you're never going with it
00:40:14As a result
00:40:17People will mock you
00:40:19Make fun of you
00:40:20Ridicule you
00:40:21Hate you without cause
00:40:23They won't understand
00:40:25They won't think you know what you're doing
00:40:27So
00:40:29Just because we may be training differently
00:40:32Than you did last year
00:40:33Or
00:40:34Running our races
00:40:35In what seems to be a strange way
00:40:37Different from every other team
00:40:39Doesn't mean it isn't going to be effective
00:40:42Remember the goal
00:40:45One other thing about that story
00:40:48After Jesus went and raised that girl from the dead
00:40:51What did he do afterwards?
00:40:53Did he go out front like a big shot saying
00:40:55What was that you were laughing at?
00:40:57What were you saying about me?
00:41:00No
00:41:00No, if I know Jesus
00:41:04He slipped out the back door
00:41:07Quietly
00:41:10Saying nothing
00:41:12Even though he could have said something
00:41:13And that
00:41:15Shows the great character
00:41:17And humility of Christ
00:41:19That's the kind of person we want to be like
00:41:23Great job today
00:41:26Savanna
00:41:37Savanna
00:41:40Savanna, can I talk to you for a sec?
00:41:55Uh, I guess
00:41:58I heard
00:42:00I heard that you started smoking
00:42:03No, I didn't
00:42:05Savanna, come on
00:42:06Look
00:42:10A lot of girls smoke
00:42:12The Bible doesn't say you can't
00:42:15Savanna, that's...
00:42:16You don't understand
00:42:17You've probably never tried it
00:42:19I don't have to try something
00:42:21To know if it's right or wrong
00:42:22I told you
00:42:24A lot of girls smoke
00:42:25A lot of girls in this Christian school
00:42:28And you can bet a ton more do in public school
00:42:30That doesn't make it right
00:42:31Like I said, the Bible doesn't say anything about it
00:42:36Savanna
00:42:37An alcoholic starts with one drink
00:42:39A drug addict starts with one joint
00:42:41It's pretty easy to tell if it's right or wrong
00:42:43You know, that's exactly why I don't hang around you anymore
00:42:46You're just so perfect
00:42:49And judgmental
00:42:51You know, that's the right way
00:43:17No, no, no.
00:43:47It's been really hard on her. She's really hurting.
00:43:49We thought maybe you could talk to her.
00:43:52Yeah, yeah, of course. Where is she?
00:43:56You over here praying or something?
00:43:58Praying? No, it's more like or something.
00:44:02I heard about your dad not being able to make it.
00:44:06All the other girls have families, and I don't.
00:44:10My parents divorced, and I don't get to see my dad.
00:44:13That's not fair.
00:44:14Well, believe it or not, I know exactly how you feel.
00:44:19Do you really?
00:44:20Mm-hmm.
00:44:20Yeah, my parents got divorced when I was 11,
00:44:24and moved to cities that were four hours apart.
00:44:28Mine are four states apart.
00:44:31I'm sorry.
00:44:32That's all anybody can say.
00:44:34Well, maybe your dad can come to another meet.
00:44:39That's what he said last year.
00:44:42And?
00:44:42He never made it.
00:44:45What's your dad do for work?
00:44:47He's a heart surgeon.
00:44:49So it's pretty tough for him to get away.
00:44:51That's what he always says.
00:44:52You know, Caitlin, I never picked up on the fact that this bothered you.
00:44:56You're kind of the comedian of our team.
00:44:59Yeah, well, I have to do something to keep my mind off it.
00:45:04I've got to get ready for practice.
00:45:06Okay, starting at this flag, running around the road, up to my flag at the top of that hill.
00:45:25That's 300 meters.
00:45:26Don't tell me we're going to do 300 meter repeats up that hill.
00:45:30Coach, why?
00:45:31Because that hill is your best friend, and when you've got a best friend, you spend time with them, right?
00:45:36No.
00:45:38Okay, we're doing 16 of these today.
00:45:4016?
00:45:41Coach, that's three miles worth.
00:45:43You got this.
00:45:44You run up at tempo pace, you walk back down to start, you go again.
00:45:47Sounds like a good time to me.
00:45:48Run on.
00:45:51Every step has brought you here.
00:45:57Run on.
00:45:59And the finish line.
00:46:01Good job, girls.
00:46:12Just run on.
00:46:15Run on.
00:46:17Run on.
00:46:20Just run on.
00:46:23Keep on going.
00:46:25Just run on.
00:46:27Don't stop moving.
00:46:28Just run on.
00:46:31Run on.
00:46:33Run on.
00:46:37I hate hills.
00:46:38Me too.
00:46:40Good job today, girls.
00:46:46Thanks, coach.
00:46:46Hey, Shelby.
00:46:50You were a little off on your pacing today.
00:46:52You seem kind of distracted to me.
00:46:55Yeah, maybe a little.
00:46:56I'll do better tomorrow.
00:46:57Well, when a sophomore in high school is distracted, it usually means one thing.
00:47:04There is this one boy.
00:47:06Mm-hmm.
00:47:07Do your parents know about him?
00:47:10Well...
00:47:11Hey, girls, stop right there.
00:47:13Don't do anything behind your parents' back.
00:47:15Keep everything up front and honest with them.
00:47:18Why do you say that?
00:47:19Let me give you an example.
00:47:22What did we do today?
00:47:23Hill repeats.
00:47:24How many did we do?
00:47:2616.
00:47:26And how many would you have done if I wasn't watching?
00:47:29I would have done 16.
00:47:31Would you really?
00:47:32Because I bet you could have been tempted to stop after the 12th.
00:47:36They did get pretty hard.
00:47:39But because I was here watching, you kept going.
00:47:41Right.
00:47:42So it's the same thing with boys.
00:47:44If you feel like your parents aren't watching, you might be tempted to do the wrong thing.
00:47:48But you don't want to do that.
00:47:49You want to keep everything up front and honest with them.
00:47:53It's the difference between doing 12 Hill repeats and doing 16.
00:48:07Dr. Van, please.
00:48:10This is Courtney Smith-Donnelly.
00:48:11I'm his daughter, Caitlin's cross-country coach.
00:48:14Thank you.
00:48:17Hi, Dr. Van.
00:48:18This is Caitlin's cross-country coach.
00:48:20How are you?
00:48:22Fine.
00:48:23Thank you.
00:48:23I know you're busy, so I'll just get right to the point.
00:48:29Caitlin's not doing well.
00:48:32No.
00:48:33No, she's not sick.
00:48:34She just, she really misses you.
00:48:39And I think it would mean a lot to her if you could make it out to a meet to see her run this year.
00:48:46Well, we've got one meet left and then state meet if we qualify.
00:48:53Regional meet is a week from Saturday.
00:48:55Well, like I said, I just, I think it would mean a lot to her if you could make it out once to see her run this year.
00:49:07Who do I think I am?
00:49:13I'm, I'm a nobody.
00:49:16Sir, I'm sorry I bothered you.
00:49:18Thank you for your time.
00:49:31You wanted to see me, coach?
00:49:33Yeah, can you sit down for just a minute?
00:49:35Did I do something wrong?
00:49:36No, no, it's nothing like that.
00:49:39I, uh, I just noticed you've been really hard on yourself in practice lately.
00:49:44You're running your splits faster than you're supposed to.
00:49:47It just kind of seems like something's wrong.
00:49:50Nothing's wrong.
00:49:53You see these eyes?
00:49:55They're 20-20.
00:49:56I don't want to feel this way, but Anna is better than me at everything.
00:50:04She's more popular than I am.
00:50:06She makes better grades in school than I do.
00:50:09She's better at running than I am.
00:50:11We've been best friends our whole life, and she's always been better than me at everything.
00:50:16It's just getting hard to be happy when something good happens for her.
00:50:21I just, I want to be the best at something, and I guess I'm trying too hard.
00:50:30You know, it's funny you're in here saying all this, because Shelby was just in here the other day saying the same thing about you.
00:50:37She's never beat you at running, you're more popular in school than she is, you make better grades than her.
00:50:43Shelby?
00:50:44Yeah, Shelby.
00:50:46How would she feel like that?
00:50:48I don't know, that's so weird.
00:50:50I never knew she felt that way.
00:51:00Shelby didn't say any of that, did she, Coach?
00:51:05It's stupid to be jealous, isn't it?
00:51:09I should just be happy for Anna's success, shouldn't I?
00:51:15I'll see you in practice.
00:51:16I'll be right there.
00:51:18Thanks, Coach.
00:51:19You're welcome.
00:51:25Hey, Heidi.
00:51:28Can I give you just one other reason why you shouldn't be jealous?
00:51:31Sure.
00:51:33Because there's one thing that Anna or anybody else in the whole world is not better at than you.
00:51:40What's that?
00:51:41Being you.
00:51:44There's only one Heidi Olsen.
00:51:46And she was created by God, and she is very special.
00:51:51She's so special.
00:51:52If somebody came in here and said, I'll give you $500 for Heidi's uniform, would we sell it to him?
00:52:01Well, yeah.
00:52:02Yeah, we would.
00:52:03We could buy a bunch more with that money.
00:52:06If he said, I'll give you $5,000 for Heidi's autograph, would we do it?
00:52:09Absolutely.
00:52:11Are you kidding me?
00:52:12Say that same person came in and said, I'll give you $5,000,000 for your number two runner.
00:52:20I'd say, no deal.
00:52:22Then he'd say, $50,000,000.
00:52:24I'd say, no.
00:52:27Then he'd say, $500,000,000.
00:52:30I'd still say, no deal.
00:52:32He'd say, how much would it take for me to buy Heidi Olsen?
00:52:40And I'd say, there isn't an amount high enough.
00:52:44So do you see how special you are now?
00:52:47And so is Anna, and Rebecca, and Caitlin, and Shelby.
00:52:51You may be the number two runner on this team, but you're not the number two person on it.
00:53:09Thanks, Coach.
00:53:21I got your text. What's up?
00:53:37Hey.
00:53:38Look.
00:53:40Um, I can't see you anymore.
00:53:43What?
00:53:44I can't see you anymore.
00:53:46Why not?
00:53:47I just can't.
00:53:49My dad doesn't want me to date anyone.
00:53:51Your dad doesn't even know me.
00:53:53It's not you.
00:53:54It doesn't matter who it is.
00:53:56He doesn't want me to date, and I don't want to do anything behind his back.
00:54:01Maybe it's time for your dad to let you grow up a little.
00:54:05I am going to grow up.
00:54:08I'm going to do what he says.
00:54:10What's that supposed to mean?
00:54:11Never mind.
00:54:13I can't.
00:54:15So I hope you understand, and if you don't, then 1031.
00:54:21It's only 3.30.
00:54:25It's only 3.30.
00:54:25Hey.
00:54:47Hey.
00:54:48She's almost done.
00:54:49Her dad usually picks her up.
00:54:51Does everything okay?
00:54:52Fine.
00:54:52No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:55:22She'll be done in a few minutes.
00:55:37Rebecca, did I ask you to do something for me?
00:55:40What?
00:55:41You didn't hear what I asked you to do after dinner?
00:55:43Yeah, I was going to do that after I did my homework.
00:55:46I wanted you to do it then.
00:55:48But I have this really important report that's due tomorrow.
00:55:50You get out there and do what I asked you to do right now, young lady.
00:55:59And my JV coach was a yeller.
00:56:01He was always honest. He was very hard to please.
00:56:04No, wait.
00:56:10I'm mistaken. Finish your homework.
00:56:12But I can do it.
00:56:13That's okay. You have enough to do with running and schoolwork.
00:56:20Do your report.
00:56:21Rebecca, you've been doing really well in school.
00:56:38Keep it up.
00:56:41I'm really proud of you.
00:56:43I quit.
00:57:13I quit smoking.
00:57:16What?
00:57:17I stopped. No more weed.
00:57:20Really?
00:57:20Yeah.
00:57:21Really?
00:57:22Yes, honest.
00:57:23What made you quit?
00:57:26All of a sudden, it just hit me that it's wrong.
00:57:30So I stopped.
00:57:33It's not what God wants me to do.
00:57:35Um, well, I, uh, I saved this.
00:57:46Did you really do this?
00:57:51Thanks.
00:57:54You're welcome.
00:57:54Hey, my lovely wife.
00:58:18So I was online checking our statement, and we got an airline bill.
00:58:23Are you going somewhere I don't know about?
00:58:25That, yes.
00:58:26I was going to tell you about that, and I will explain later.
00:58:28I just, I have to finish this first.
00:58:31And what you doing?
00:58:33Comparing times to see how we'll finish in the regional meet.
00:58:35So for state meet, it's divided into four regions, and they take the top four teams from each
00:58:40region, plus the top five individuals not on one of those teams.
00:58:44Well, didn't our girls win our region last year?
00:58:46Yeah.
00:58:46Fortunately, there's not many good teams in the region.
00:58:49And what are those times?
00:58:50Well, I'm scoring the meet based on times of teams in other races to see where we'll finish.
00:58:55I mean, if our girls won our region last year, don't they stand a good chance to win it
00:58:59again this year?
00:59:00Yeah, but I don't want them to win.
00:59:01I just want them to qualify.
00:59:06Huh.
00:59:08Look at that.
00:59:11What is it?
00:59:12I want you to run the exact pacing that you have in practice the last two weeks.
00:59:16Everybody understand?
00:59:17What?
00:59:17You heard me.
00:59:18You want me to run a 632 mile pace today?
00:59:21Yes, and just maintain it.
00:59:22Coach, we'll lose.
00:59:23No, you're in your pacing like you have in practice, and we'll get in.
00:59:27Coach, we're not going to make it to state if we run that slow.
00:59:30You just leave the results up to me and run the race exactly like I've asked you to.
00:59:35Hey, remember the goal.
00:59:38At 1031.
00:59:38Thank you.
00:59:49Hey, you've got to get it going.
00:59:51Everybody get to the moon.
01:00:04Look at the moon!
01:00:07Awesome, awesome, awesome.
01:00:13Anna, I kept telling you to pick it up.
01:00:15What were you doing out there?
01:00:16What place do we come in?
01:00:17I don't know, but your girls didn't make the state
01:00:19Are you sure?
01:00:20Yes, now why weren't you running hard out there?
01:00:23The coach told me to run her pace
01:00:25I mean, what did you want me to do?
01:00:26I want you to do what I say
01:00:27Dad, she's the coach
01:00:29I have to do what she says or else I'm off the team
01:00:31Just quit, just quit the team
01:00:33That's what I want you to do
01:00:34Dad, I can't quit, we still have the state meet
01:00:35You didn't make the state meet, that's what I'm trying to tell you
01:00:38Your coach lost this for you, it's all her fault
01:00:40This could have been a really good team this year
01:00:42Caitlin
01:00:46I just got here, I'm sorry I missed your race
01:00:53I'm really sorry
01:00:54It's good to see you, I didn't know you were coming
01:00:56Well, it was a last minute decision
01:00:58And I just wanted to see you run
01:00:59Well, you're out of luck, pal
01:01:01Try again next year
01:01:02That's two years in a row now I've missed you running, right?
01:01:07Right
01:01:07Good job, everybody, good job, that was great
01:01:10Coach, this is my dad
01:01:13Courtney Smith-Donnelly
01:01:15Jeremy Van, nice to meet you
01:01:18Nice to meet you too, I'm glad you could come
01:01:20He just got here and he missed the race
01:01:23He won't be able to see me run
01:01:25Sure he will
01:01:26You girls take tomorrow off and I'll see you Monday
01:01:29What do you mean, we lost?
01:01:31Oh no, we got four so we qualified for state
01:01:33I'm sorry, but after this season, you won't be coaching here anymore
01:01:48Now this does not affect you teaching at our school
01:01:52I hear you're doing a fine job in the classroom
01:01:54You certainly are not being fired from your teaching position
01:01:57But I heard from every parent this year
01:01:59And I mean every single one
01:02:01Complaining to me that you wouldn't let the girls compete
01:02:04And that you made them run really slow
01:02:06Now I know we qualified for state, but just barely
01:02:08One father tells me that if it wasn't for such a weak field
01:02:11We never would have made it
01:02:12And we ranked last out of the 16 teams who qualified
01:02:15Last year we finished 10th
01:02:17We had six of our top seven girls returning
01:02:19Until you let the Sims girl go
01:02:20Now I really am sorry
01:02:23But the decision has been made
01:02:25It is final
01:02:26The parents have all been notified
01:02:28And so have the girls
01:02:29Thank you
01:02:42For the opportunity to work with these girls
01:02:45I've um
01:02:46I've really enjoyed it
01:02:49If you ever change your mind
01:02:52I'd love to coach again next year
01:02:54What happened to you guys on Saturday?
01:03:10How did you finish fourth in the region?
01:03:12You should have won that so easily
01:03:13We qualified for state
01:03:14That's all we were trying to do
01:03:16Just admit that that coach does not know what she's doing
01:03:19You guys are lucky to even be going to state meet with her
01:03:22Well at least we're going
01:03:23Yeah and look what you're ranked
01:03:25Last
01:03:26You guys are going to get killed next week
01:03:28But if Holloway was still here
01:03:30We would have been top five
01:03:32Oh but I do have some good news
01:03:35Our track team is going to be in good hands
01:03:37And our relay team might have a legitimate shot
01:03:39At winning the state title
01:03:40You know why?
01:03:41Because we'll have a real coach coaching us
01:03:43Who?
01:03:44My dad
01:03:45He's coaching the distance runners in track
01:03:48So this spring you have some real workouts to do
01:03:50He's even contacted Holloway
01:03:52And he's going to send the workouts to him
01:03:54So
01:03:55Well
01:03:57Good luck at state meet
01:03:59What time do you leave tomorrow?
01:04:09We get out of school at 11
01:04:10What's your itinerary look like?
01:04:14Supposed to get there by three
01:04:15Coach said we walk the course
01:04:16Go over the race
01:04:17I want you to head straight for the lead in that race on Saturday
01:04:19You understand?
01:04:21You can still probably get top 15 if you run your best
01:04:23Whatever the coach tells you to do
01:04:25Don't listen to her
01:04:26You're a good runner
01:04:27She's done a terrible job training you
01:04:29Dad
01:04:29Don't dad me
01:04:30Just do what I say
01:04:31At least we finally got rid of her
01:04:33Can't believe we let her stay around this long
01:04:35We did make it to the state meet
01:04:38Your team won the regional last year
01:04:40And you should have won it again this year
01:04:41Look
01:04:42I don't want to get into this again, okay?
01:04:44You have a good trip tomorrow
01:04:45And your mom and I'll see you on Saturday
01:04:47Okay
01:04:48How's it going?
01:05:04I just kind of hope you wouldn't show up here
01:05:19You might have a better shot at this
01:05:20Okay, this is the starting line
01:05:26We're starting out of box two
01:05:28Let's walk the course
01:05:29Get to know it
01:05:30Then we'll go over what we're doing tomorrow
01:05:31Here's the mile mark
01:05:37There's the clock
01:05:38Make sure you're on pace
01:05:39If you're a little slow
01:05:40Pick it up a step
01:05:41If you're fast, adjust accordingly
01:05:43The two mile mark
01:05:52Check your splits again
01:05:54You're two-thirds of the way home
01:05:55The race will be won or lost in this last mile
01:05:57I'll show you why in a minute
01:05:59Look at that
01:06:07Do we have to run up that hill?
01:06:09This hill comes just after the two-mile mark in the race
01:06:12Which is why in practice with your long runs
01:06:15I had the hill come just after the two-mile mark
01:06:17The hill in practice is slightly longer than this one
01:06:21Girls, listen up
01:06:22At this point in the race
01:06:23Fatigue really sets in for a lot of runners
01:06:25And the reason why is that they went out too fast
01:06:27So this hill becomes an absolute killer
01:06:29But for you it won't be
01:06:31Now when you get to the top
01:06:33You'll start working your way downhill towards the finish line
01:06:36You have to stay focused
01:06:38You have to stay on pace
01:06:39You're still going to have runners to pass in this last mile
01:06:41Okay, let's keep going
01:06:44When you get to this final stretch
01:06:52You've got to give it all you've got
01:06:53The downhill finish will help
01:06:54But still you've got to run hard
01:06:55All the way through the finish line
01:06:57There's the board right there
01:06:59When you cross the finish line
01:07:00Your individual name will be on the left
01:07:02Team scores will be on the right
01:07:04It's going to constantly be updating
01:07:06As people come across the finish line
01:07:07And our hope is that
01:07:08Eventually our team name's up at the top of the board
01:07:11Remember girls
01:07:14Cross country low score wins
01:07:16Alright, I've got to get my wheel
01:07:18Meet me back at the starting line
01:07:19For a coach who lost her job
01:07:25You'd never know anything happened
01:07:26Yeah, I know
01:07:27I mean, did you hear what she just said about our team?
01:07:30Yeah, hopefully to the top of the board
01:07:32I know our coach is a Christian
01:07:34But she must be on some heavenly drug or something to the day
01:07:38Yeah, I've got a good pack this year
01:07:42But I don't have a runner that can crack the top ten
01:07:45That's what's hurting me
01:07:46Now you, you've got those two front runners
01:07:50That's the difference
01:07:51Anything can happen
01:07:52We still have to run a good race
01:07:54Besides my three, four, and five are quite a ways behind
01:07:56They're not that far back
01:07:58They'll be in the top 25
01:08:00Nobody can beat you
01:08:01Orange Hills is ranked last this year, is that right?
01:08:05They were top ten last year
01:08:07And I thought everybody was coming back
01:08:08What happened?
01:08:09Yeah, I heard they got a new coach
01:08:10Doesn't know what they're doing
01:08:12Now how do you know that?
01:08:13We ran over at Jackson Park for our first meet this year
01:08:16And just got to talking to one of the fathers
01:08:18You know he said that Sims girl?
01:08:20She's not running either
01:08:21That girl's good
01:08:23Why not?
01:08:24I don't know
01:08:25Their top runner is ranked 42nd in the meet
01:08:2942nd?
01:08:30At least we'd be ranked better than that if they're all returning
01:08:32Gotta be that coach
01:08:33Who's the coach?
01:08:35I couldn't tell you
01:08:35Check the roster
01:08:36Who's coaching them?
01:08:38Hey
01:08:39Courtney Smith Donnelly
01:08:42Courtney Smith, are you sure?
01:08:44Says Smith Donnelly
01:08:45Do you know her?
01:08:47Yeah, I know her if it's who I think it is
01:08:49Seven years ago
01:08:50My number one runner, Shannon Wilson
01:08:52Was ranked first in the state
01:08:53But she finished second at the state meet
01:08:55On this very course
01:08:56You know who beat her?
01:09:00Courtney Smith
01:09:01Same girl?
01:09:02She ran for Blair Academy on that side of the state
01:09:04Probably is
01:09:05She was ranked way back
01:09:07Like in the high 30s coming into the meet
01:09:09She ran even splits
01:09:11Came out of nowhere and ended up winning by four seconds
01:09:14I never expected it
01:09:16That's the team you need to be worried about
01:09:19Why?
01:09:21Because if that girl's her coach and they run like she did
01:09:23They only have five runners listed coming in 42nd through 69th
01:09:27That's a pretty close pack
01:09:29Yeah, but they're way back
01:09:30And my team will beat them easy
01:09:32All seven of my girls are ranked ahead of the number one
01:09:35They're not a factor
01:09:36I gotta go guys
01:09:41But gentlemen, good luck tomorrow
01:09:42Take care
01:09:43You too
01:09:44Good talking to you
01:09:46I wouldn't be so sure about that
01:09:51What do you mean?
01:09:53Look how low they're ranked
01:09:53After our state meet
01:09:56I remember we checked Courtney's times in the previous races that fall
01:10:00And in every race
01:10:01She was about a minute and a half slower than Shannon was
01:10:04Until the state meet
01:10:07Well, what'd she do?
01:10:08Run tempo pace the whole time?
01:10:10It sure seemed that way
01:10:11Wait a minute, wait a minute
01:10:13You're telling me that girl ran tempo pace in every race until the state meet?
01:10:19I don't know
01:10:19But it sure seemed like when you checked her times
01:10:21Well, how'd she qualify for the regional meet if she only ran tempo pace?
01:10:25Because that region has always been really slow, you know that
01:10:27And I remember she qualified as the fifth individual
01:10:30You are kidding
01:10:31She really did her homework
01:10:34Who's her number one runner?
01:10:37Anna Glass
01:10:38What was her time at the regional meet?
01:10:402024
01:10:40That's about a 6.30 mile pace
01:10:45What was her time at the state meet last year?
01:10:51Anna Glass
01:10:522008
01:10:54So she's worse this year
01:10:56Or she's a lot better
01:10:58And that 2024 is her tempo pace
01:11:00Which means tomorrow that girl's gonna break 19 minutes easy
01:11:04If she did that
01:11:06She'd make top five if she did that
01:11:10With a pretty tight pack right behind her
01:11:12No coach in their right mind would ever make their girls run tempo pace every race
01:11:19That, that is absolutely crazy
01:11:21Is it?
01:11:22I mean, what's the main goal here?
01:11:24To win a meet last month?
01:11:25Or win the state meet tomorrow?
01:11:27Think about it
01:11:29We all do one tempo workout a week
01:11:31If Courtney Smith had her girls run tempo pace in all their races
01:11:35They did at least two some weeks
01:11:37That's building great endurance
01:11:40Plus they learned even pacing and race conditions
01:11:42Yeah
01:11:43If she trained her team to run like she did
01:11:49Look out for the girls in orange
01:11:53Look out for the girls in orange
01:11:54Here's 100 meters
01:12:03It's already marked with that white flag right there
01:12:05Now we're starting on a box two so it's gonna be easy to see
01:12:08Let's do some practice starts
01:12:09Let's get our pacing down
01:12:10Girls, it is absolutely essential that you hit your 100 meter pacing tomorrow
01:12:16Does everybody understand?
01:12:17Yes ma'am
01:12:18What pace coach?
01:12:1924 and a half seconds again
01:12:20Not this time Anna
01:12:22This time you go out at 22 and a half
01:12:24That's, that's a six minute mile pace
01:12:29And an 1845 5k if you maintain it
01:12:31You do that and you finish in the top five
01:12:33Coach, I haven't run under 20 minutes yet this year
01:12:37Yes, you have
01:12:40No I haven't
01:12:41Sure you have
01:12:42When?
01:12:43In practice
01:12:43When?
01:12:45The cruise intervals we've been doing all season
01:12:46Remember we started with three
01:12:48And we worked our way up to five
01:12:50Tomorrow the first six minute mile you run is going to feel like the third cruise interval
01:12:54The second is going to feel like the fourth
01:12:56The last is going to feel like the fifth
01:12:58Now don't worry if there's a lot of girls out ahead of you at this start
01:13:01It's a state meet
01:13:01They're gonna go out very fast
01:13:03But they won't be there for long
01:13:04The field will come back to you
01:13:06Just stay on pace and you'll keep passing runners
01:13:08Same goes for all of you
01:13:10What I just explained to Anna
01:13:11That's how it's gonna feel for you tomorrow
01:13:15Heidi
01:13:1623 seconds for your 100 meters
01:13:186.08 mile
01:13:19Rebecca
01:13:20Caitlin
01:13:2123 and a half seconds that puts you at a 6.16 mile
01:13:24Shelby
01:13:2524 seconds and a 6.24 mile
01:13:28Every training session that I've done with you all this year has been to build your endurance
01:13:33And your strength to prepare you to run these times tomorrow
01:13:36Coach, why didn't you let us run this hard in any of the other meets?
01:13:40Okay
01:13:44I'll tell you
01:13:45First
01:13:46A lot of these girls are going to be worn out from running so hard in previous races
01:13:51But you girls
01:13:52You'll be fresh
01:13:54Second
01:13:55I had your own tempo pace and meets to build endurance and that takes time
01:13:59Third
01:13:59I wanted you to learn even pacing in a race setting and that's going to prove to be very important tomorrow
01:14:04Anna
01:14:05At the end of the race there should be an Eastern Valley girl just ahead of you and you've got to beat her, okay?
01:14:12Okay
01:14:14Remember
01:14:15You'll be coming from behind
01:14:16She'll just be hanging on
01:14:18I would rather be in your shoes, but still
01:14:20You've got to get her
01:14:22Got it
01:14:23Same goes for you Shelby
01:14:25At the end of the race there should be an Eastern Valley girl just ahead of you and you've got to beat her
01:14:28Understand?
01:14:29Yes, ma'am
01:14:31You've got to beat her
01:14:32This is going to be a very very close race. It could go either way
01:14:36Okay
01:14:38Let's go to our hundreds
01:14:40Coach, why didn't you tell us any of this before?
01:14:43Yeah, and to our parents
01:14:45When I tell people the way to get faster is to train slower, hardly anybody believes me
01:14:50Why? Because that doesn't make sense
01:14:53Most people believe the way to get faster is to run harder and that's what makes sense
01:14:57But slower training builds endurance
01:15:00Add in some hills, you gain strength
01:15:02Put the two together, you get faster over time
01:15:04And that's what we needed more than anything was time
01:15:06I needed every single training session I could get with you all and that included meets
01:15:11So if you girls stay on pace tomorrow, you can win the state meet
01:15:15That was the goal, right?
01:15:19Remember the goal
01:15:21I want to thank each of you for the opportunity to be your coaches here
01:15:28It's been
01:15:30It's been one of the highlights of my life
01:15:33I want to thank you for your commitment to train everyday
01:15:36For your hard work, for your sacrifice, for not quitting
01:15:42Even when you didn't understand
01:15:44And each one of you is so special to me
01:15:49And my prayer for you is that God blesses you in this life
01:15:54Dear coach, enclosed, please find a reimbursement for the plane ticket you sent me
01:16:16It should be more than enough to cover your payment
01:16:18I didn't appreciate your phone call at the time
01:16:21But now I realize it's probably the most important one I've received in the last three years
01:16:25My daughter asked me what made me come to the meet last week
01:16:28But I didn't tell her about your call
01:16:30And she was none the wiser
01:16:32So that tells me you didn't say anything to her either
01:16:34That was very honorable if you're not to embarrass me like you could have
01:16:37And for that, I say thank you
01:16:39I'll be at the race tomorrow
01:16:41And more importantly, I'm going to block off more time to visit Caitlin in the future
01:16:45And make her a priority in my life
01:16:47Thanks for all you've done for my daughter
01:16:49And good luck in the state meet
01:16:51Jeremy Vann
01:17:08Anna, you still awake?
01:17:10Yeah
01:17:12Can't read
01:17:14I'm thinking about the race
01:17:16Yeah, me too
01:17:18You nervous?
01:17:20Mm-hmm
01:17:21Me too
01:17:25You think we can win?
01:17:30I don't see how we can
01:17:33The coach does
01:17:35She really believes we can win
01:17:38I'm going to miss her
01:17:43Me too
01:17:44I'm going to miss her
01:17:45Me too
01:17:46Me too
01:17:49You're going to miss her
01:17:50Me too
01:17:51You're going to miss her
01:17:53Grazie a tutti.
01:18:23Grazie a tutti.
01:18:53Grazie a tutti.
01:19:23Grazie a tutti.
01:19:53Grazie a tutti.
01:20:23Grazie a tutti.
01:20:53Grazie a tutti.
01:21:23Grazie a tutti.
01:21:53Grazie a tutti.
01:22:23Grazie a tutti.
01:22:53Grazie a tutti.
01:23:23Grazie a tutti.
01:23:53Grazie a tutti.
01:24:23Where's the coach?
01:24:23I don't know.
01:24:26Coach?
01:24:26Coach?
01:24:28Where is she?
01:24:29Coach?
01:24:30Where'd she go?
01:24:31I don't see her.
01:24:32What'd she do?
01:24:33Disappear?
01:24:35Wait.
01:24:35Wait, wait, I think I know.
01:24:36Wait, I think I know.
01:24:46Wait, wait.
01:24:46Wait, wait.
01:24:47Wait, wait.
01:24:48Wait, wait.
01:24:48Wait, I think I know where she is.
01:24:49Where?
