00:00My name is Melanie Price. I am an endowed professor of political science at Prairie View
00:07A&M University and also class of 1995. Hello everyone my name is Ivy Lorraine Walls and I
00:14attended Prairie View A&M University. The reason that that Ivy represents the values of Prairie
00:20View is she takes the best of what is true about us. We are people who are committed to community.
00:26We are people who won't be told no. We are people who use our education to better the lives of the
00:33people around us and she's found her passion and she has used her passion to help other people.
00:39Being around her, seeing her on her farm, it is infectious. If you follow her on Instagram,
00:45you will be so happy about pumpkins, about collard greens, about all kinds of things that you never
00:50thought you would be and you can tell that there is love behind it and that she loves black people
00:56and she's going to try to figure out how they can be as healthy as possible. And that's the essence of
01:02Prairie View. That's the essence of historically black colleges. We're trying to make black communities
01:06healthy, whole, and well. After graduating from Prairie View, I went to work for the CDC for a few
01:12years working in epidemiology. I de-escalated Zika virus and was working on basically pandemic.
01:20I grew up on a ranch and I converted the backpack into a vegetable farm so that I can start giving
01:26away fruit and vegetables to my neighbors. Sunnyside, Houston, Texas was hit extremely hard
01:32by COVID-19 and so it was imperative for me to get the vegetables to the hands right through the
01:39doorsteps of our senior citizens. I'm Alana Gaskin, a senior political science major at
01:45the Prairie View A&M University and I am the student body president. Alana represents the best values of
01:51Prairie View because when it's time to get things done, when it's time to make decisions, when it's
01:56time to figure out what are the best things for the students and how to make them happen, she's serious,
02:02she's focused, she's on the ball. But also when it's time to have fun, when it's time to lay back,
02:07when it's time to just be a college student, she's able to do that too. She's funny, she's easy to be around,
02:14but she's serious and so you don't ever forget like when you're around her. This is a young woman
02:20who is focused on what it is she wants to get done. She asks clear questions and she's not afraid
02:26to sort of ask questions that might bristle people. I think it's the best kind of leader of a student
02:31government that you can have. Being a She Got Now honoree is beyond a blessing and an honor to be able to be
02:41recognized with the work that I do in my community. It feels amazing to be a She Got Now honoree and
02:46that I get to put on for my university as well as my community. It shows that the hard work that
02:51I'm doing daily in Sunnyside, Houston, Texas is really getting the limelight that it deserves.
02:56I am Alana Gaskin and I got now.
