00:00Thank you for joining us. My name is Dr. Lynn and I'm here today to give you the 411 on CBD
00:10and THC. Thank you so much. We so appreciate having you here at the Essence Wellness House.
00:16My name is Dr. Safia Lynn from Ask Dr. Lynn. I practice emergency medicine and prescribe
00:22medical cannabis down here in South Florida. So happy to get to know everybody. I want to
00:26introduce you to my girls. They are the co-founders of Brown Girl Jane and they have been working
00:33for the past two years to get this thing up and running. They have an amazing company and
00:39next is, oh, I'm sorry. Next up is Ty and Malaika. What's up, Dr. Lynn? I'm Ty Boshant. Hi, everyone.
00:50I'm joined by my co-founder, Malaika. Hey, Malaika. Hey, guys. So good to see you. I'm Malaika
00:57Kabete and I'm so happy to talk to everyone today about all things CBD. I'm so excited too. So let's
01:04get this conversation going because for me, it's all about giving the tea on CBD. And so Safia, I know
01:11you get a lot of questions the same way that we do. Why don't we just, you know, just flow about this
01:17and let's talk about like what people think about CBD. So the question that I get all the time
01:23is that does CBD make you high? Absolutely not. I'm sure you've heard this a million times,
01:31especially with starting your company. There are so many women that are concerned. I don't want that
01:36high effect. I don't want that high feeling. I don't want to be like that. But seriously, CBD is
01:41anti-inflammatory with no THC component, no to minimal to none, right? So what we want to do is
01:48make sure that people understand that it's for inflammation rather than for pain relief. It's
01:52not going to give you that psychoactive high effect. So we want to promote CBD as a daily wellness use.
01:59I love it. I love it. So I, Malaika, how did you get introduced to CBD?
02:04I am probably the most unlikely wellness founder that you'll meet. As you know, my background is in
02:12bond trading. So I spent most of my career in Wall Street as an executive there and literally ran
02:19myself into the ground. After the birth of my third kid, I had so many issues with just pain and I had
02:29a spinal issue and all the doctors were telling me to look at traditional pharmaceuticals. I knew that
02:35is what I didn't want to do, was introduced to CBD and fell in love with all of the ways it could be
02:42used. I started to be, you know, a plant evangelist and tell all my girlfriends about it. But where were
02:49we in the conversation? Where were Black women centered? And so it led us to want to create a
02:54collection really centering us, centering our needs, dealing with the anxiety and the pain and
03:02everything that Black women experience all too often. So Brown Girl Jane was born.
03:08I love it. You know what's so interesting, Dr. Lin, like I had experienced CBD and THC as well,
03:17but, you know, before joining Brown Girl Jane, but I really got into it because I was at a point in my
03:23life where I was traveling constantly. I had just finished shooting a travel show. I literally was
03:29on a plane more than not. I wasn't settled in my own space at the time. I just got my new place,
03:34super excited about that. And I was feeling anxious. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Feeling anxious
03:40and also, you know, not being able to sleep. And that was when Malaika and Nia reached out to me
03:45and they were like, we're launching this product. We want to send it to you. We want you to try.
03:49And actually I started taking a CBD that just helped me, you know, feel more harmonious and feel a lot
03:55more calm and at ease. And, you know, I was like, oh my gosh, this is amazing. Like, because the effects
04:01were like almost immediately using the tinctures for Brown Girl Jane. And I was like, I want all Black
04:07women to know about this. But what I didn't know about and didn't have a sense of was like the
04:12endocannabinoid system. So I was like calling Malaika, like, can you help me understand this? Like,
04:16what is this? Like, I'm not a science girl. So can you tell us about like, what the endocannabinoid
04:21system is and how CBD is a part of like our body, right? First of all, no one knows how to pronounce
04:28that. Okay. So we're just going to call it for short, the ECS system. All right. Okay. How do you
04:33really pronounce it though? You said it perfectly. Endocannabinoid system. And no one can say that
04:39everybody messes up on that word. So you said it amazing. Excellent job. But for short, let's use
04:46the ECS system, right? So as we know, there are over 11 different systems in our body. We have
04:52things like the circulatory system, the respiratory system, the digestive system. And we also have the
04:58endocannabinoid system. This really came into play over the last few decades, because they started
05:03developing research in that area and devoting research to it. So it's always been there. But now
05:09we're hearing more about it and about its benefits and its uses, right? Really, it's similar to the
05:16nervous system in many ways. It's good for pain relief, immune system response, and also sleep
05:23appetite. It really helps in so many different parts of your body. What's important about the
05:28cannabis plant is that THC and CBD are derived from the cannabis plant, but they're most studied
05:34of the 400 different type of benefits you can get from the cannabis plant. So let's rewind
05:39that back. The cannabis plant works for a bunch of things. There's over 400 different components
05:43that have been studied. But the THC and the CBD component are the two most popular ones,
05:49right? So that's getting all the wave these days. That's why you're hearing about it on
05:52the news. That's why you're seeing it pop up everywhere. All that CBD does is amplify the
05:59system you already have. So it goes into your body and it works within the system you already
06:05have. It's not creating a new system. It's not doing something different. It's taking what's
06:09already great inside of you or what's not functioning at its maximum capacity and it's
06:14taking you up the next level. It's bringing up the bag, right? So it's making you feel 10 times
06:19better without doing anything new. It's just working within our system that we already live with.
06:26So most people are like, what is it doing? Is it really working? I don't feel it. I'm not sure.
06:30Just think about your intention. You and I have something totally in common. I have insomnia
06:35crazy. I work in the ER overnight, so I cannot sleep half the time. I'm up in the day and then
06:41I'm awake at night. It's just been terrible. And my sleep pattern has been super, you know,
06:46up and down. So I really needed something to help balance me out. I started to try the Brown Girl Jane
06:53sleep aid. And what I started to do is I take one ml, put it under my tongue, switch it around for about a
06:59minute and then swallow it. And the reason why I put it under my tongue is because it helps absorb
07:03faster that way, right? You get maximum benefits from it. And then you swallow it. You can even put
07:09it in your nighttime glass of wine or your tea or whatever it is that you're using, right? Girl, how have
07:14you been using it? Tell me about it.
07:17Malika, I want to hear from you because I mean, honestly, you really turned me on to CBD in a whole
07:22new way. And I've really incorporated into my life. And I love that you were so forward in this.
07:27And have you have been doing this for five years? Ultimately, I've been doing it forever. And I love
07:33hearing Dr. Lynn talk about the science behind it. Because I really think of the ESEA is an internal
07:38scale. Because that's easier for me, sort of like our internal thermostat was just turning us to the
07:44right temperature for our scale that's taking us, you know, in balance. So I love hearing about the
07:49science too. I put it in everything. So I put it in my yogurt and my hummus. I certainly drop it
07:56under my tongue at all times, like all throughout the day, all the time, the day when you just feel
08:04a little wonky, or you're running too fast, or you just feel out of balance. And so what I noticed
08:10is that, you know, it's almost like I felt that absence of everything that I didn't want in my
08:16life, even more than a powerful punch. I didn't have any of the anxiety. I didn't have the back pain.
08:23My gut health was a lot better. Because like you said, inflammation is the root of all evil. My skin
08:30was better. It wasn't as red. And so I just felt CBD is wonderful. And that it just seeks out that
08:37inflammation or those problem areas wherever they are in your body. And I think that's the cool power
08:42of the plant is that it can be used so many different ways. But yeah, I drop it in my drink,
08:48which I have now because we all deserve it. How do you use it, Ty? What's your favorite way?
08:58Well, you know, I honestly, I use it in every way. I mean, I'm a beauty girl, you know, I started my
09:03career as a beauty editor. And so I use it topically. And we have a glow serum, which actually
09:10helps with just kind of like keeping your skin super healthy, minimizing pores because it's
09:15anti-inflammatory. And obviously, the other thing that people don't realize is that CBD actually
09:21has more antioxidants than vitamin D and C. And so it's really, really good for skincare. So I love
09:27it topically, but I use it throughout the day. I start out in the morning with the tincture. I do one
09:33probably two hours later. Like, you know, because obviously, it's just also about the pace of life.
09:39We recognize that, you know, as women of color, we have so many things going on, especially during
09:44the time, you know, being in the pandalution, as I call it, you know, we're trying to really kind of
09:49center ourselves and keep ourselves grounded, because we're taking care of so many different
09:52things all at one time. So it's really helped me to just kind of like be a lot more zen and a lot
09:57more focused and organized, actually, just even being able to organize my day. So it's been really great
10:03for me. But what was interesting, I felt like I had to overcome. And I don't know if you guys felt the
10:07same way. I think we're kind of in the same age range. But I felt like, you know, so many people
10:13were like, just we grew up being told say no to drugs. And so that was like this, you know, it's
10:19like this barrier to entry, because people are like, you just can't do it, you shouldn't do it,
10:24you shouldn't do it. And I had to educate myself about the plant. And Malika and Nia have helped me
10:29to do that. So absolutely love it. I love that you said you use it topically. I've even used it on my
10:3613 year old niece who's going to her acne stage and her transition into, you know, womanhood. And
10:41she's had breakouts that have been relieved tremendously, but topically, my sister and I
10:47didn't want to go with the traditional route of prescription medication and drying her skin out
10:51and worrying about hyperpigmentation. So CBD has been a great additive to her moisturizers and just her
10:57daily use. And then for me myself, you said it amazing, I think starting out with a low dose of 25
11:03milligrams and then kind of building your way up to achieve the goals that you want to achieve,
11:07right? So you heard Malika say, I use it throughout the day. And that's because her body has now built
11:13up a level of tolerance that she knows how much she needs. So starting out, I wouldn't do it throughout
11:18the day, I would do it once and then slowly increase over the next few days. So you're titrating
11:24till you get to a goal that you want to achieve, whether that's to get sleep relief, whether that's to get
11:28anxiety relief, whether that's to help with your gut system and your digestion, whatever it is,
11:34your intention is behind using this, make sure that you mindfully keep in mind how much you're
11:40using and dosing it. Because of course, we want to get the maximum benefits of the minimal amount of
11:45amount of the minimal amount of use, because CBD is expensive. Well, Malika, how did you figure out
11:51how to price this? I get this all the time. Like, why are certain bottles $100? Why are certain
11:56bottles $60? Is it better than the other? What is 1500 milligrams versus 2000? You know, talk to me
12:02about how you figured out goals with pricing. Well, I'll start by saying Brown Girl Jane is a
12:08community driven, mission centric brand. And so we knew that if we're centering women of color,
12:14then accessibility had to be at the core of what we were doing. We worked really hard not to have
12:21huge margins. And so that's a fact we if you look at our pricing versus other competitors of the same
12:30level of quality, because we knew that we were going to have the highest level possible quality
12:35sourcing, as you know, is super important, triple third party lab testing, super important. So we knew
12:43that while we wanted the highest possible quality, we wanted women of color and our sisters to be able
12:49to afford it. So that was a big part of it, transparency, accessibility, and giving back
12:57to the community through all of that. So we we always work to just make sure that our price points
13:04are super low and competitive while maintaining that high level of quality. It's that's that's
13:10important for us. Because like I said, the the community and the sisterhood is everything
13:15in terms of how we've crafted the brand. And, you know, every inch of our business is aligned with
13:20making sure our sisters can get this because this is for them. They need this. We will what I that was
13:27the thing that stood out to me most when I found out about CBD was why aren't we a part of this
13:32conversation? Why aren't we being spoken to directly? We are who needs this plant. We are who can benefit
13:38from this plant and all of the amazing ways it can be used. So so yeah, that's that's really how we've
13:44approached every inch of everything we do. I love how you brought you and your sister together and
13:49then you brought in Ty to help make this a really trifecta amazing brand. Ty, how did you meet the
13:56girls again? I know they sent you a product, but then how did you decide I want to invest my money into this?
14:01No, so, well, we're also Spelman sisters. So while Malaika and me are biological sisters, we're all
14:08Spelman alum. And so Malaika and I were at Spelman together. So I knew her from Spelman. And, you know,
14:15it was just one of those things when I tell you it was divine how we came together, because I was
14:19interested in CBD as a business, you know, coming from the beauty arena, which I started in 20 years
14:25ago, I was always fascinated by like, where was the innovation was going to be. So I was interested in CBD.
14:31And I had been an entrepreneur for 14 years. And I was like, I really wanted partnership. So that's
14:36the other thing about like the sisterhood and just that aspect of it. I knew that I wanted to build
14:40something new, but I wanted to build it with someone. And so it was really kind of just divinely
14:46ordered that another Spelman sister was like, you know, Malaika and Nia, you know, you guys need to
14:51collect, they're doing something very interesting. And they sent me the product. And I was just like,
14:55Oh, my gosh, it changed my life. I went in, you know, and I want because, because I want I want
15:01the community at large to really understand the benefits of it. And whether or not, you know,
15:05you're supporting Brown Girl Jane, or another business, we hope that you will support us, but
15:09or another company, I just really want to expand the conversation of wholeness and wellness for women
15:15of color, because that's a part of my journey. I went through a major transformation, both physically,
15:20spiritually, and emotionally, and it really helps center me. And I just want to bring it to the
15:26world. I love that. Malaika, you want to tell them our story about how we actually know each other,
15:31which is so crazy. I know. Let's get the tea on that. Like, we are DC girls. Hello.
15:38Nobody doesn't like the DC. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. What about Newark? No.
15:43The orange is in the house, too. Again, DC girls. Back to high school days. Like, that's crazy.
15:54Back to high school, junior high school. So this interview was crazy and ordained how we all came
16:00full circle together. It's, it's amazing. And that's how I feel like that is what sisterhood
16:06and Black women are about. Like that community, we will find each other. We will love on each other,
16:12and we will support each other. And so this has been so beautiful, uh, in and of itself.
16:17Let's cheers to that ladies. Yeah. Wait, I need some more. I need some more.
16:23I've been drinking. Are you not ready? You're supposed to have this on stash now. Like,
16:29like just have it, have it there, have it there and ready. Oh, and you want to know what's,
16:34what's so, well, I'm, and actually let, I want to make a toast seriously. I want to make a toast to,
16:40to, to us and to Black women and to wellness and also to wholeness, um, in all shapes and all
16:48forms for our lives. So here's to you, Dr. Lynn. Here's to you, Malaika. And to our wholeness.
16:55Cheers, ladies. Cheers.
16:56Cheers to Essence for facilitating this and giving us this platform to speak to all our amazing audience
17:01members. Thank you so much for joining us. Yep. Have a good night guys.
