00:00A detransitioner who had top surgery as a minor has just won two million dollars awarded to her
00:05by a jury after she said that her psychologist and her doctor were negligent in screening her
00:11ahead of the surgery. This case is a huge landmark. It is the first of its kind where a
00:17detransitioner has been financially compensated after reverting back to their birth gender.
00:22It was alleged that a psychologist put the idea of a double mastectomy into this girl's head when
00:28she was 16 and ultimately that the surgeon who did the operation that she was referred to only met
00:34with her twice for about 30 minutes each leading up to the procedure. From the time that she started
00:39identifying as a male to the time that she had her healthy breasts removed it was just 11 months.
00:44There's been a ton of debate about whether or not it's appropriate for minors to be able to access
00:48irreversible gender-affirming surgeries such as top surgeries and just on Tuesday the American Society
00:54of plastic surgeons came out and said that they think that you need to be at least 19 in order to
01:00get the procedure. The case might be an indication of where more court cases are headed. There are 28
01:06similar lawsuits that are going towards trial and probably many more beyond that. A lawyer for the
01:13plaintiff said that he guesses that a lot of the themes and fact patterns that we saw in this case
01:18are probably similar in other ones. This sort of case is the type of thing that will make doctors who are
01:23providing gender-affirming care to minors think twice about the fact that they may be held accountable
01:28by a jury or by the legal system if a child that transitions ends up detransitioning and regretting
01:35the procedures.
