00:30Hi. Oh my God. This is so good. I'm so excited about this segment. Hi. I am Corey Murray, the entertainment director at Essence magazine. And I don't know about you all, but in addition to my day job, I have been helping my little one who's 10 with her remote learning.
00:56But we need something to kind of shake up the day because she's really good about learning on her own and doing her reading. But I really wanted to call on an expert to do some fun, science-filled DYI projects that we could do right here in our house.
01:10And who else could I call on but Rosalind Daniels, who is a lifestyle expert and the queen of content creation and this beautiful kitchen that she's about to show us.
01:20So please, Rosalind, introduce yourself and tell us all of the projects we're going to learn today.
01:25Hi, everyone. I'm Rosalind Daniels with RosalindDaniels.com. And today I am here to show you some of my favorite DIY projects that I do with my kids.
01:37And I know that you guys are going to love doing them with yours.
01:40So something that I love about doing these projects is the fact that they keep your kids entertained, especially while we're on quarantine right now.
01:49We want to keep our kids busy as long as possible. And they help stimulate their brains.
01:56They can help with their motor skills. And another thing about these DIY projects is it gives you the opportunity to reinforce your cleanliness habits because you need to watch.
02:07Wash your hands before and after each project. Now, something else that's super fun about or great about these projects is the fact that you probably already have all of the items for these projects in your kitchen today or right now.
02:21So you don't have to worry about leaving the house if you don't have to. So that's always a plus, especially during this time.
02:28So first off, I am going to start with the bouncy egg project. And this is a science experiment.
02:35And for this project, you're just going to need two glass jars, two eggs, one cup of vinegar and one cup of water.
02:49Now, when you are finished with this project, you will have a bouncy egg. It's super simple.
02:58You probably already have these items in your kitchen right now. So you can get started on this today.
03:04All you're going to do is place your eggs.
03:05Wait, I have a question. Could you use apple cider vinegar or any other clear liquid or does it have to be vinegar?
03:12It has to be vinegar, but you can use apple cider vinegar. You need the acid.
03:19If you have enough lemon juice, you can use lemon juice. But I strongly suggest just use vinegar because you can get a big quantity of that for a low price.
03:29If you do use lemon juice, then you will have to have the eggs sit in the solution longer.
03:38So when you're doing this project, you're going to have your eggs in your jars.
03:43And we're just going to slowly put these in here so they don't break.
03:50And make sure your kids wash their hands before they get started.
03:54In one jar, and you can label these so they'll know which one is which.
03:59But honestly, once you start seeing what happens, you'll know immediately which one is which.
04:04So in one jar, you're going to add one cup of vinegar.
04:09And just make sure that it completely covers the egg.
04:13And then in your other jar, you're going to add one cup of water.
04:20And you just want to make sure, again, that it completely covers the egg.
04:23You're going to have these sit for 48 to 72 hours.
04:28What you want your kids to do is to come back after 12 hours to take a look at the eggs, see how they're looking.
04:37Immediately, you'll see that bubbles start to form around the egg with the vinegar in it.
04:43And nothing really happens with the egg with the water in it.
04:49Roslyn, do you keep the jars covered or do you keep them open?
04:52You can keep them open because another thing that you want them, you want your kids to go back and see the differences.
05:01And one of the one of the things that they can see is or smell is that the one with the vinegar, it will start to have a little bit of an over.
05:11And so they will be able to see the difference between that as well.
05:14So after your 48 to 72 hours, you want to take your egg.
05:23I'm going to try to slowly get this out.
05:27I'm so scared.
05:28And it's weird.
05:32I'm not going to lie.
05:34So you're going to take your egg out and you'll see a little bit of residue at the top.
05:39That's your egg shell.
05:42It's going to get eaten away.
05:44And you'll rinse it in water.
05:47And you'll see that the egg is rubbery.
05:50And you can gently bounce the egg.
05:54Have your kids put it up to the light and you can see the yolk still moving inside of the egg.
06:01And they'll get a kick out of it.
06:03Now, after they're done playing with it gently, you can use either a bowl or a pan of some sort and slam it on there.
06:13And all of the egg will break and all of the liquid will come out.
06:19And there you go.
06:22You have your bouncy egg experiment.
06:24And what about the egg with the water?
06:28It's just it's just for comparison.
06:30So it's just for comparison.
06:33You'll see nothing really happened to it.
06:35But I did start on this project a few days ago.
06:39And I have one that's in water.
06:41And if you can see, it cracked a little bit and the yolk started to come out and it formed a bubble.
06:50Yeah.
06:51Isn't that crazy?
06:53That is crazy.
06:53But it's also fun.
06:55Yes.
06:56Science.
06:56Yes, exactly.
06:58Exactly.
06:59So after that, you'll have them wash their hands.
07:02Not going to wash right now.
07:04But you want them to use soap and water, sing happy birthday two times, and they're good to go.
07:09In between, I'll be using sanitizer to make things beat up a little bit.
07:13Okay.
07:14Okay.
07:15So next on our list, we are making DIY Play-Doh.
07:22I'm so excited about this.
07:25Yes.
07:25Yes, this is one of my favorites.
07:28So as a mom, we're always using Play-Doh.
07:31And, you know, I'll be honest with you.
07:33When I buy it in the jars, they usually go bad within a day because the kids never close them up well.
07:40They get dry.
07:41And I'm constantly spending money on Play-Doh.
07:44So I decided to reach into my back pocket, go old school like my mom used to do, and start making Play-Doh at home.
07:52And, guys, once you start doing this, you'll probably never buy Play-Doh again because it's so easy and it takes less than five minutes to do.
07:59So all you're going to need is flour.
08:05So we're going to start with two cups of flour, all-purpose flour.
08:11And I encourage you to have your little ones go ahead and make this themselves because they'll be proud of what they're making.
08:24They'll take care of it more, and it gives them something fun to do.
08:27So you have two cups of flour.
08:31You have a half cup of salt.
08:36Can you use sea salt or should it be plain salt?
08:39You would like to use plain salt if you have sea salt available, if you can, if you have a grinder, if you want to grind it to make it a little finer, then do that first because you don't want to have it too coarse when you're making Play-Doh because it won't melt down.
08:58Got it.
08:58You use two tablespoons of cream of tartar or, like my husband says, cream of tartar.
09:07And so you have your dry ingredients.
09:09You're going to give that a mix.
09:11And, you guys, this is just like you're in the kitchen cooking.
09:16So you want to make sure all of your dry ingredients are done first.
09:24Then you take two tablespoons of oil.
09:27I use vegetable oil, and that's just because I have young ones.
09:32I have a five-year-old and a two-year-old, and my kids still like to put things in their mouths, so I want to make sure nobody gets turned around here.
09:40So I use vegetable oil.
09:43But if you want to have a good scent, you can use baby oil, and you can also add a little bit of essential oils in this mix so you can have a good scent, and you can just have a little bit of aromatherapy.
09:57Going on.
09:59I wonder how does it taste?
10:02Does it kind of taste like tartar sauce?
10:04Okay.
10:06It's going to taste salty.
10:08I may or may not have tasted it before.
10:11It's going to be salty.
10:12So, you know, I have to try and make sure just in case the kids get it, you know?
10:18Exactly.
10:21Exactly.
10:22So then you use a cup and a half or a cup and a quarter of hot boiling water or extremely hot water.
10:31So we're just going to pour this in.
10:36I like to do a little bit at a time, or you can just do half and then add the other half.
10:43So we're just going to give it a good mix.
10:45And this is just like you're making bread or more like bread at home.
10:55So we'll add the rest of our water.
10:58And if you have a little bit too much or you see that it's sticky by the time you're done, all you have to do is just add more flour.
11:07You guys, it's really easy.
11:09You don't have to worry about messing up.
11:12You can always fix the problem.
11:14So if it's too dry, you add a little bit more water.
11:17If it's too wet, you add more flour.
11:20So right now, you guys, you see that it's a little too wet for me.
11:25That's not like Play-Doh, right?
11:27So we're just going to add more flour a little bit at a time, maybe about a quarter cup at a time.
11:34So you definitely don't add additional salt or the cream of tartar sauce.
11:40No, we're going to go ahead and keep that as is.
11:44Okay.
11:45I'm going to add a little bit more flour.
11:54And okay, here we go.
11:58And you want the consistency to be just like regular Play-Doh that you would get at the store.
12:07All right.
12:08A little bit more.
12:10And so a mom hack that I like to use with this is when we're able to have our parties and get out again,
12:17you can use this for a favor for your kid's birthday party.
12:24My goddaughter had a Play-Doh party and her mom made each other kids and a little package so they could make them at home.
12:32So that's a good way to use this recipe.
12:35It's also a great activity to do at a party.
12:40Exactly.
12:41Or just a rainy day, like you said, a rainy day.
12:49Exactly.
12:51All right.
12:52I'm going to put just a little bit more in there.
12:55And so now you want to use your hands.
13:02And you're using gloves because it's going to get pretty sticky.
13:04Exactly.
13:07So I'm going to be moving back and forth a lot.
13:10So I'm going to use my gloves, but you don't happen to necessarily use gloves when you're at home.
13:18But what you're going to do is just continue to mix.
13:23Get all of the flour mixed in there.
13:28And then you can just pour it out on a cutting board or on your counter.
13:35Like so.
13:37And you have Play-Doh, you guys.
13:39Now, you can leave it as is.
13:42Or you can separate it and put it into little balls.
13:50And actually, I'm good now because this is no longer sticky.
13:55Separate it.
13:55Put it into little balls.
13:57And what you'll do is just poke a little hole in there with your finger.
14:01And you'll take your favorite food coloring.
14:05Right now.
14:05This is the part I was waiting for.
14:07I'm so excited.
14:09Yeah.
14:09We're doing a little bit of pink.
14:13So I like to use about four to six drops.
14:17Okay.
14:18And that's for about a four-inch ball.
14:21But you guys, just see how it goes with your color.
14:26If it gets too dark, then just add a little bit more Play-Doh into it.
14:31And then if it's too light, just add it.
14:33Okay.
14:33Oh, so all you're going to do is just knead your Play-Doh as if you're kneading bread.
14:42So I like to flip, palm, flip, palm, and you'll just keep on doing that until you get your color.
14:55And then when you're done, your Play-Doh will come out just like this.
15:00And so as you can see, I have different colors.
15:07And you're good to go.
15:08Oh, my God.
15:08Those look so much fun.
15:10They look so much fun.
15:12They really are.
15:13So what you can do, you can store it in either saran wrap or a plastic bag.
15:19I have food storage bags.
15:20You want to get all of the air out.
15:23And you can save these for up to six months, you guys.
15:26And guess what?
15:27If they go dry, you can just hurry up and make some more.
15:29Because as you can see, it only took about five minutes to do.
15:32Yeah.
15:34Okay.
15:35So we have-
15:36What do we have up next?
15:39Okay.
15:39So up next, we have another science experiment.
15:45And what we're going to do, actually, let me move this right here.
15:50What we are going to do is blow up a balloon using a water bottle.
15:59We have our balloon.
16:02You want to use a large balloon.
16:04And let's see.
16:09You need one cup of white vinegar, again.
16:14And you need a third cup of baking soda.
16:22Let's see.
16:23I apologize.
16:25Get a little bit more baking soda up in here.
16:28I love all the wonderful things you can do with baking soda.
16:34It's like a staple I love keeping in my house.
16:38I have boxes of it.
16:40It helps you clean.
16:41It takes odors away.
16:44And it allows you to do DIY projects with your kids.
16:47Winner.
16:48It helps you clean your back.
16:49Okay.
16:50Especially when you think-
16:50And again, before this-
16:52Right.
16:53Exactly.
16:54So before this, we're going to wash our hands.
16:57Happy birthday.
16:58Happy birthday.
16:59And we'll get started on the next one.
17:01So you have your water bottle.
17:04And you're going to take a funnel and add your vinegar to the bottle.
17:12And this is almost like doing the volcano experiment minus all the mess.
17:18Oh, yeah.
17:19Your kids will be able to see the interaction between vinegar and baking soda and see what it does.
17:28So then we have our vinegar inside of our bottle.
17:32And then you're going to add your baking soda to your balloon.
17:40And with that, I'm going to use a funnel again.
17:44I'll get this bad boy up in here.
17:48And if you want to make it faster for the kids, you can't have these pre-filled.
17:53Okay.
17:57Okay.
17:58And for this one, you're only going to use white vinegar.
18:02Okay.
18:03Okay.
18:03So we're not going to use white vinegar.
18:04I'm going to use white vinegar.
18:05Right.
18:06Right.
18:07Right.
18:08Okay.
18:09And we'll get this.
18:11I cannot.
18:12I'm like on pins and needles of how this is going to turn out because I'm trying to figure
18:16out in my mind, like, what's the science behind this?
18:19You'll, you're going to see, you'll enjoy it.
18:26Okay.
18:28All right, guys, we're in.
18:30So you pack it down in there pretty good.
18:34Yeah.
18:34You want to get it in there really good.
18:36Okay.
18:38So we have our baking soda in the balloon and you're going to place the opening of the balloon
18:47over the mouth of the water bottle.
18:51And then you're going to slowly start to put the baking soda in.
18:58OMG, that is so amazing.
19:06Oh my gosh.
19:08Yeah.
19:08I'm telling you, the kids get a kick out of this.
19:11You can go outside if you want to, but I have yet to cause any mess with this, but, um, after
19:18it blows up, you can take it off.
19:20Let's make sure it's all down there.
19:22Ooh, I'd wait, you guys.
19:24We're not going to take this off quite yet.
19:25Oh, that's going to be an explosion.
19:30Right, right.
19:31But we'll let it sit for a little while.
19:34Um, but you can just take it off, tie it up and now your kids have a balloon to play with
19:38and they, they blew it up themselves.
19:41Wow.
19:42So that's our experiment number three.
19:47Okay.
19:49All righty.
19:50And last but not least, we are going to make DIY coffee filter flowers.
19:59You know, from here, the flower looks very real.
20:03It looks really pretty.
20:04It's so nice.
20:05And since you can't really get out as much as we used to be able to get out, now you can
20:11just make your flowers inside and, you know, just make them the way that you want.
20:16Okay.
20:17So for this experiment, you're going to need coffee filters.
20:21And if you want to add some color, you can do food coloring and you'll need skewers.
20:29And either a glue stick or a glue gun, depending on how handy you are with your glue gun, you
20:41can use a glue stick.
20:43I love a glue gun.
20:44Right.
20:45But it can get a little hot.
20:47So if you don't do crafts all the time, just be careful so it doesn't hurt your fingers.
20:52If you do use glue sticks, then just be careful when you're adding it to the paper because you
20:59don't want to tear it.
21:00I do not suggest using regular glue because it'll be wet and sticky and just a mess.
21:06It's just the worst.
21:08Okay.
21:08So all you're going to do, you guys, watch closely.
21:12It's super simple.
21:13So you're going to take about five to six coffee filters and you're going to fold it in
21:20half one time.
21:22And then we're going to fold them again.
21:28Right.
21:29And then we're going to fold it one more time.
21:33So that's three times.
21:34And then we're just going to dip it into your food coloring and open it up and you're going
21:44to let it dry.
21:45This, when the, if the food coloring does not go all the way to the, to the end, that's
21:52totally okay.
21:53This can create an ombre effect.
21:56Um, but we're going to be cutting some of the edges anyways.
21:59So, uh, you'll see the green go throughout or you'll see the color go throughout, but
22:05what you'll do is then separate them and you can lay them flat and either just let them
22:11sit for a few hours so they can get dry.
22:14Or you can use a hairdryer on low and just dry them up and you'll be good to go.
22:22So once that's done, your coffee filters will then look like this.
22:31So I did a whole bunch of different colors.
22:35They're pretty pale because I want it light colors, but you can see I have blue, orange,
22:43yellow.
22:44And what you're going to do is you're still going to take five coffee filters.
22:51So we have one, two, three, four, five, and we're going to get back to our folding.
22:57So we'll fold in half one time.
23:01We'll fold in half again.
23:08And this time we're only doing two.
23:10So then you're going to cut a slit, one slit here.
23:17You want to separate this into three sections.
23:21You'll do one slit here and one slit here.
23:26And then what you're going to do is cut out the shape of a petal on each section.
23:42So depending on what your petal shape looks like determines what your flower will be or what the overall shape will be at the end.
23:55And if you want to do more than five, I totally suggest doing that because it makes the flower fuller.
24:02Okay.
24:03Okay.
24:04Okay.
24:05When can you make like, because Gerber daisies are some of my favorite flowers.
24:12Can you make, I guess it's just a matter of how you make the shape.
24:16Yes.
24:17So you'll want to do the same shape as the daisies.
24:22And then also what I would do is I would do say three more filters and to do the middle of the flower.
24:35And I would do that in a solid color so it would stand out.
24:39And then once you see what we're going to do after this, it, you can see how you'll be able to form the flower around the stick.
24:46So, okay.
24:48This is a good trick to know, you know, packages, you know, you can use it for gift wrapping.
25:02Oh, yes.
25:03Yes.
25:04Yes.
25:05Yes.
25:06Yes.
25:07Sure.
25:08And you know what?
25:09Mm-hmm.
25:11So a little, uh, backstory, when I first learned how to do these, it was around the time I was getting married and I may have convinced myself that I was going to have paper flour at my wedding.
25:24So I started making like a ton of these, like they were everywhere in our house, but then it just kind of got crazy.
25:32I had an outdoor wedding.
25:33They said it was supposed to rain.
25:36So we had to switch to real flowers, but I thought I was going to be able to save some money by making these paper flowers.
25:42You guys were like, we're going to have a friendly wedding.
25:45I sure was.
25:47Okay.
25:48So you see how this looks.
25:51So all you're going to do is open and you see how these are kind of still attached.
25:58You just want to cut those in half just so, yeah, they separate and then we'll open all of them and you have your forms for your flower.
26:16So then, yeah, listen, once you do, once you do these, you're going to be making them all day.
26:22I'm just letting you know now.
26:23I'm totally, I'm totally doing this after this segment.
26:27Okay, so then we're going to take our skewer and we're going to put a hole in the middle.
26:36Now I have a hard time putting them all through at once.
26:40So I just gently do one at a, at a time, but you just want them to go directly through the center.
26:49Okay.
26:50And this skewer will be your stem for your flower.
27:01And if you want to take it a step further, you can spray paint them green.
27:06Ooh.
27:08Okay.
27:09So now we have our petals on the skewer.
27:15So all you're going to do, take the first one, you start from the top.
27:21I'll push these down just a little bit and we're just going to put a little bit of glue.
27:29Uh-oh.
27:30Let's see.
27:31Okay.
27:32There we go.
27:33You just put a little bit of glue around the flower.
27:43Right at where the whole meat system?
27:49Yes.
27:50Just, and I apologize.
27:52You're going to put it around here.
27:54Oh, got it.
27:55Okay.
27:56So what you do is you just flip it up and this is going to be the center of our flower.
28:01And you want this to attach to your skewer.
28:07So, and then you just kind of grab it at the bottom like that.
28:12So you scrunch it up and it'll stick together.
28:15So there we go.
28:16We have our first layer, you guys, done.
28:20Okay.
28:21Now we're just going to keep on doing that same exact thing over and over again until we're
28:27done with our flowers.
28:30So let's see.
28:32My glue gun is acting up.
28:35So don't you worry.
28:37I have a glue stick.
28:39It's probably good to have one on the side anyway, just in case.
28:46Uh-huh.
28:47But remember when you're using that glue stick, guys, I'm telling you, be careful because it
28:53can tear the paper.
28:55Luckily, the coffee filters are stronger than tissue paper, but you still want to be pretty
29:00careful.
29:01Okay.
29:02All right.
29:03So we have our second layer.
29:05Let's do the third.
29:08What kind of paint or watercolor would you suggest if you want colors that are more vibrant?
29:15Or would you use, or can you use like tissue paper?
29:22Can you use, okay, I would not use tissue paper.
29:26You can use tissue paper, but I don't suggest using them just because they're so delicate
29:31and so fragile and you can mess this up really easily.
29:35But you can use, um, do not use an oil based food coloring.
29:40You want to use a water based food color coloring and, um, they have different colors to where
29:47you can do, um, to where you can do, I apologize.
29:54No, that's all right.
29:55They have different colors.
29:56You can do more vibrant colors.
29:57You can do neon colors and you can just, um, add more color to your water.
30:10So there we go.
30:12So this is our last one and you have a beautiful, there we go, flower.
