A sea captain was told he was a “serious accident waiting to happen” as he was jailed for six years for killing a crew member when his ship crashed into an oil tanker off the coast of Yorkshire.Russian Vladimir Motin had been on sole watch duty when the Solong collided with the Stena Immaculate anchored near the Humber Estuary .Jailing Motin for six years, Mr Justice Andrew Baker told him at the Old Bailey: “You were a serious accident waiting to happen.”

00:00Mark Purnier died at his place of work on the morning of 10th March last year.
00:09That place of work was the container ship Solon.
00:13He died going about his duties as an able seaman on that ship on a voyage from Grangemouth to Rotterdam under your command, Vladimir Mottin, and because of your gross negligence.
00:28That is the sentence of the court. Six years imprisonment plus the statutory surcharge.

00:37Today Vladimir Mottin, the captain of the merchant vessel Solon, has been sentenced after a jury found him guilty of causing the death of Mark Purnier through acts of gross negligence.
01:04This follows a collision on the 10th March last year between the container ship Solon and the anchored fuel tanker Stenner Immaculate.
01:13Vladimir Mottin was the captain of the Solon and the only person on watch at the time of the collision.
01:18He had a responsibility and a duty of care for the safety of his crew, his vessel and also for the safety of other vessels in the vicinity.
01:25Mottin completely failed in his duty causing the death of one of his own crew and endangering the lives of the crews of both vessels.
