Hundred-meter deep 'sinkhole' in Indonesia swallows farmland and roads

A giant cavity in Indonesia's Central Aceh region has swallowed up sections of road, farmland and a high-voltage electricity tower as it continues to grow. The collapsed area has expanded from 27,000 square meters to 30,000 over the past five years and is now around 100 meters deep. The ground collapse has destroyed vast swathes of crop plantations - mostly coffee, chili and sugarcane. A section of the main road was also engulfed. Land movement was first detected at the site in the early 2000s, the local disaster agency said. This is caused by volcanic rock structures, which are prone to movement when they interact with water, according to the Indonesian geological agency.
