With winter in full force, Gerilyn, Grace, and April wanted to share some tips for fighting ash. How do you keep your skin moisturized?
Transcript
00:00Maybe you didn't lotion properly, or you took too hot of a shower the night before, or you're
00:05just crusty and gross, but you're watching this video because you want to better yourself.
00:11I respect that.
00:12It's not about where you've been, it's not about where you are right now, it's about
00:15where you're going.
00:17Hi Naturally Curly World!
00:18I'm Gerilyn.
00:19I'm Grace.
00:20I'm April.
00:21And this is the best ever, the best ever, best ever ways to fight ash.
00:26When I was younger, I had this ill-conceived notion that I couldn't be ashy because the
00:31ash wouldn't show up on me because of the whiteness.
00:35Holy untrue.
00:36Let me tell you.
00:37If my elbow is dry, it gets even whiter.
00:39I know.
00:40Hard to believe.
00:41You've been out, all your people are just like, uh, you ashy bro.
00:47You're just like, oh, well do you have lotion in your purse if you're going to talk about
00:51it?
00:52But once you get home, what you need to do is exfoliate.
00:55Best advice for exfoliation, keep it tepid and not too hot.
00:59Our skin actually does protect itself pretty well.
01:03This is going to be not proactive, but reactive.
01:07So once the dead skin is there, you got to get it off.
01:10And don't scrub yourself raw.
01:12I've made that mistake.
01:13You need to make sure that you're getting something fine-grained.
01:17My favorite way to fight ash is with a good, thick lotion.
01:23And one of my favorite lotions comes from one of my favorite brands, Shea Moisture.
01:28It's thick.
01:30It is rich and it makes my skin feel good and dewy and beautiful.
01:36It smells divine.
01:38It smells so good.
01:40Even though I use it to fight ash on my elbows and my feet and my knees and everything, it's
01:46a hand cream.
01:48I got it from a CVS.
01:50I put it on my hands and I said, we are best friends now.
01:56Look at that.
01:57Making the bottles sing, okay?
02:00So one of my favorite brands lately has been Decium.
02:03They are the parent company of The Ordinary.
02:05So this particular company is called The Chemistry brand.
02:08And it's specifically a hand cream, but you can use it for anything.
02:13When you put it on your hands, it just soaks in so quickly.
02:18If you want to change it up for winter, it's always good to get an exfoliant that's like
02:22not just the soap, but more of a scrub.
02:24Make sure it's got some oils in it so that as you're scrubbing, it's moisturizing in
02:29your skin after that.
02:31Bathe with regular soap first and then exfoliate because you're bathing to get the funk and
02:37the bacteria off.
02:38And then the exfoliant is the second, like that's your detailing.
02:41That's going to get all the skin off.
02:44You cannot substitute exfoliant for soap.
02:46You will be out here glowing but musty and that's a whole other problem.
02:50The other thing I love from The Chemistry brand, and I'm on my second bottle of, is this Retin
02:55Oil.
02:56It is a pro-repair body oil for scars, stretch marks, and daily care.
03:01An oil isn't going to necessarily moisturize your skin, but it will seal in moisture.
03:07Right when I get out of the shower, I towel off really quick and then I start putting
03:10this on as soon as I can to seal in that water while my pores are still open.
03:15Another great reason to look into this particular hand cream by Shea Moisture is because it's
03:23a part of their community commerce program.
03:26It's inviting you to help them fight poverty.
03:28So, 10% of Shea Moisture community commerce sales go to women-led businesses, okay?
03:36To support communities that supply ingredients for their products or to support the Sophie
03:42Tucker Foundation.
03:43Now, if you want to learn more about this, definitely check out their website.
03:46Go to Shea Moisture's website and learn more about that.
03:49When I saw that they had this program, I felt even better about getting this.
03:55This is great.
03:56When I started using this, I had a bunch of bumps on the backs of my legs.
04:00I think it was from friction with jeans just creating clogged pores and dead skin.
04:06I started using this and they went away within a week or two.
04:10If you have scars on your body or stretch marks that you want to work on, embrace your tiger
04:14stripes, but if you want to fade them, tepid water, good moisturizer afterwards, be gentle
04:21with yourself, you know, firm but gentle like your dad or like your daddy, alright?
04:27And then that's what's going to glow you guys up this winter.
04:30So that is my best ever way to fight ash.
04:34Be sure to leave in the comments what your favorite way to fight ash is.
04:38We make these videos every Monday, so come back next week for another one.
04:41Bye!
04:44Bye!
04:45Bye!
