00:00Challenged me to a fight while I've been on the bike.
00:17Hi, my name is Ray and I'm a reporter with the Canberra Times.
00:20We're out here in Dixon today to examine the phenomenon of cyclist crash data.
00:26That Dixon was number two on the list, naturally, after cycling in the city itself.
00:32Last year there were about eight crashes here, which is a surprising total.
00:37However, the number is trending down.
00:40While there's another area in Dixon, closer to where the shops are,
00:43where there were another four crashes that occurred.
00:46Speaking to residents here...
00:48I find riding in Dixon a bit better than riding in the city.
00:51The city can be quite congested.
00:54This thoroughfare can be quite tricky to navigate
01:00because the lights don't match up, right?
01:04So you've got to go section by section.
01:06And a number of people get a bit anxious about waiting for the trams.
01:11And I've seen, you know, some people rush over while the trams are coming through.
01:16Haven't seen too many near misses.
01:19But yes, I mean, I'm not convinced that this is connected up as well as it could be
01:26with the coordination of the lights.
01:28Yeah, I've had a few incidents.
01:30I've had an incident just further on, just crossing over the next road,
01:38where I've had a driver get quite aggressive because myself and another cyclist were crossing the road.
01:48I've had further towards Hackett, somebody jump out of their car and chase me
01:54because I witnessed an accident and they were not happy that I was in the area.
02:01I've had people challenge me to a fight while I've been on the bike without actually, you know, causing any harm or coming close to them at all.
02:11So there is an aggressiveness, but I come from Melbourne and it's nowhere near as bad as driving in the city of Melbourne or the inner north of Melbourne.
02:22So comparatively, Canberra is an excellent place to ride a bike.
