00:00Hey Essies, it's your favorite entertainment editor Shelby Stewart and with me today I have
00:05a woman of many titles, actress, host, performer, dancer, vocalist, but the most important title of
00:11all right now is the most recent peach holder on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Shamia Morton.
00:16Aww, hey you guys, how are you? Hey! Hey Essies, so excited to be here hanging out with you.
00:24So tell me how does it feel to be holding a peach in season 16? Oh it's amazing,
00:29I've been friends with this franchise for such a long time, so it's nice to finally be able to
00:34showcase my family, my fame, fashion or lack thereof, and just friendships, honestly, it feels good.
00:43You know you said fashion or lack thereof, what do you, a lot of fans have had a lot to say,
00:48but what do you think about your fashion choices on the show? You know I honestly think it's not
00:54the clothes, it's you, you pick the clothes, and every time I put something on, I feel beautiful,
01:00and I feel fashionable, and I think that's all that matters. Absolutely.
01:03You know, I'm not wearing it, and I'm not wearing it most of the time anyway.
01:07So we are nine episodes into this season, we're just about midway, all the girls are talking,
01:13what has it been like watching yourself back this season as the new anchor of The Real Housewives of Atlanta?
01:18Oh my goodness, what an honor, first of all, to be, you know, going the new anchor.
01:23Yeah.
01:23I mean, wow, I'm living up to that, in that title. But I must say, just, it's a new year for the franchise,
01:31fresh and vibrant energy. So just watching myself on the screen, before I would pop in as a brain,
01:38it would be so dramatic. Now, I'm my worst critic for everything, but I'm true to who I am,
01:45and what you see is what you get. I'm an authentic person, so I just, I can't be so mad at myself,
01:52watching myself, because it's like, well, this is who you are, this is who I am, this is who I've
01:56always been. So it's fun to be able to showcase who I really am to the world. Because good, bad,
02:01or indifferent, I feel like there's somebody out there that understands, that has probably walked
02:08in some of my shoes, and I'm relatable to them. Yeah.
02:14Has anything surprised you or hit differently in hindsight?
02:19Yeah, actually, the outpour of love and support, because prior to getting my peach,
02:23I was called so many things, and it was like, people were like, oh, I'm not here for me to get
02:28a peach. I would basically give anybody a peach nowadays. I mean, it was just such nasty
02:32adventure back and forth on Instagram. The comments were nasty, and they always say,
02:36you don't read the comments, but where are you, man? You don't see people excited for me,
02:39didn't want me in this space, and most of them weren't. So just to see a complete, like, like,
02:46just turn completely around in my favor, it's always, it's like, you know, God's time is the
02:52right time. You just have to be patient, and you can't, you know, follow the naysayers, you can't listen
02:57to them because, you know, hey, he's on his plans. Yeah, absolutely. How would you say you mentally
03:04and or spiritually prepared to be on camera in this capacity? I think I've been preparing for this
03:10my entire life. I've always learned my life out loud from being signed early on in high school to
03:15a major label. I was always made for the stage. I came closer to the stage play with Tyler Perry before
03:21the Have and Have Not. It was an actual, you know, sitcom or a series. I was on stage by singing. So
03:29my life has always been an open book. I've always been very open, transparent, and vulnerable about
03:34me and my life. So the cameras were just an addition. It's almost, sometimes I'm almost like,
03:39are they there? I forget they're on. Yeah, absolutely. So your relationship with Portia has always been
03:46one that fans have rooted for, two ATL girls who really know each other. As we saw in sort of the
03:53trailer coming up, you guys' friendship gets tested in ways that we haven't seen before. So do you think
04:00that anything shifted between you guys? I think that our friendship has been tested over the years
04:05a lot. It's just that you're only seeing one side because I wasn't a beach holder. I didn't have a microphone.
04:12I didn't have a platform to share my side of things or my point of view or my reaction to some of those
04:20things that are happening in past seasons. But now that I do have this platform, it is an awkward space
04:26because it's not just I'm a friend of, I'm here too, and I'm a part of this group. And at times, I'm sure
04:32that can be difficult for her maybe, as we've seen. So I think now it's just about navigating a new space
04:39and hoping that at some point we can get back on the same page. And so there was a moment in I think
04:46episode four when Portia questions whether it's your voice on your song Never Had. Can you walk me
04:52through how that felt for you? I was very hurtful. I've been singing since I was a child. We went to
04:57the same high school. Yeah. Every time I've had a platform and you know she wanted to release music
05:04or do her, she sang the anthem with me at the Hawks game. So I think it's very clear that we know
05:10Justin voices. Yeah. So just to see that, hear it, live it, and then relive it once it aired was hurtful.
05:19And I told her what I felt about it. Contrary to proper belief, a lot of conversations about things
05:25that hurt me in our friendship happen off camera. Yeah. I've always been private about
05:31personal relationships and stuff like that. So I've always given that grace of it's not their business.
05:37But as you see in the season, our friendship is put to the test and it's open for discussion on her part.
05:44She's allowing these ladies to pick us apart. Yeah. And instead of turning a deaf ear to it and
05:49bringing it to me directly, she's engaged them. And now the fire, you know, the smoke is there.
05:55You know, the fire is flame and I'm just trying to put it out. Absolutely. So with that being said,
06:03in your opinion, what makes a girl's girl? What makes a really solid friend? Being able to share the
06:10spotlight, being able to share the space, being able to uplift people, support people,
06:19you know, show up for people, just loyalty. Yeah, absolutely. And like I said, we're about nine
06:28episodes into the show now and we've seen your like very adamant support of Portia as one of your very
06:36close friends. Do you think that people look for a reason to dislike you? And for the people that do,
06:42what do you say to that? You know, you can't be liked by everybody. That's true.
06:45You know, for those that like me and love me and support me, I love you too. And I like you too.
06:49And thank you. But for those that don't, I'm sorry. That's your loss. You know, I mean,
06:55I honestly, you know, I would love for the whole world to love me because I want to love on the entire
07:00world. But I have to understand that that's something I'm even trying to mature and grow
07:07better at just being able to just move forward and press forward. You can't please everybody.
07:14I've naturally been a people pleaser. I mean, that's my job. I host, I entertain even down to the NBA.
07:20It's about making the crowd happy, keeping them engaged, you know. So I treat that to my personal
07:27life as well. I'm keeping people happy, leaving people better than I've found them.
07:30So when I feel like I've failed in that area, it's disappointing for me, but I feel better.
07:35And so one of the most powerful things I would say about this season is that we get to see you
07:39in your full glory. You're expressing yourself. You're unfiltered, unmuted. What are you most proud
07:45of about how you showed up for yourself this time around? Oh my goodness. Thank you for asking me that,
07:50Shelby. I'm so excited by just being able to showcase my music. You know, me being a singer,
07:58and I don't know if you understand, but back in the day, it was not easy. You had to do a showcase
08:03for A&R and get the approval of the label to have them put their music out there. With social media being
08:07what it is today, you can do your own thing. You can create your own lane, put your own music out there,
08:13do what you want. And that is exactly what I've done. I'm taking the power and I'm making my own
08:18dreams come true. And so to be on this platform to showcase that, it helps. Yeah. And people are
08:24loving it. I'd be there bumping down the head, tagging me in the videos. Thanks, y'all. You know,
08:30and it feels good. It's like a me validating, like, just, I've always wanted to sing. I started
08:36having the sun being choir at the church of God in Christ. So imagine me being in this at my big age,
08:42when back in the day, people said, oh, you aged out at a certain age in the industry. Like,
08:45we are kind of hard on each other, but even kill a mic show that you can sweep at your big age. So
08:51I'm just happy to be able to showcase my music. I actually want to pinpoint something you said.
08:57You grew up in a Kojic church. So can you walk us through a timeline? We got a little bit of it
09:02on The Real Housewives, obviously. You worked with Carrie Hilson, but I'd love to kind of detail your
09:07journey a little bit more in music. I started out singing in the choir, and I would be very
09:14adamant about leading, you know, on Sundays. They were going to hit one song, okay? That's it. And I
09:19come in and be like, but I got one more I want to sing. And then it kind of moved towards me being
09:25in girl groups. I would do talent shows and pageants, and my talent would be singing. Then I
09:31I got in a girl group. One of my early girl groups is with Shamari Pierce DeVoe now. She was in the group
09:39Black. But prior to her getting in that group, we were in a group called Intrigue. And we both went
09:45to the same high school, and we had a girl group, and we did our thing. But then she moved on and went
09:52into the group Black. And of course, I moved on. I got in a group called Chase Seven. And from that group,
09:58I got in a group called Pretty Tony. And that group was when I was with Carrie Hilson. Yeah.
10:04From there, I got a group called Co-Ed. We released a song called Roll With Feet. It charted,
10:09it did really well. It was number one for forever. But again, these are all groups. Yeah. And a lot
10:15of times in groups, if one person gets pregnant or they decided they don't want to do it anymore,
10:20now the group is done and you got to start all over. So, and then sometimes you don't want to sing
10:25because they're singing or you don't want to perform at the venues and perform that.
10:30You doing it on your own, it's all about you. You having your own financial backing,
10:34it's all about you. What you say goes and what you put out there is all you as a representation
10:38of you. Absolutely. And that's where I'm at with it now. And you know, with that being said,
10:43you've been in so many different groups and you've been like sort of a support or a part of
10:48something else. So, how does it feel to just have that spotlight solely on you?
10:52Oh, it is amazing. It's like a one-woman show. You know, like I said, I always put myself
10:56the female Jamie Foxx. Just being able to sing, act, dance, host. Like, I feel like when I hit the
11:04stage, I'm right where I'm supposed to be. Yeah. Right where I'm supposed to be because it's like I
11:09could do it all. You know, I've made it by the host of me. I could do it. I think that's something
11:13that fans will look forward to as well on the scenes that I brought. So I did it right now.
11:16Yeah, absolutely. Oh, I love that. So I do want to ask you, you know, we've gotten to see some of
11:22your journey in music on the show. We saw you working with RL. You're in the studio. I thought
11:27that was super dope. So what is your opinion on Drew working with Dennis of like all music
11:33producers to work with? You know, at first I was like, well, that's kind of weird because I never
11:38knew Dennis to do music. Yeah. But now we know because she's released her album.
11:42It's great. Yeah, it's really good. I'm all about uplifting and empowering another one.
11:48If you really want to do it, you can go for us. It's like, I got your back. But initially when it
11:53was brought to me and when I heard about it, it was brought like they were dating. And of course,
11:58as you see in like that first scene or the first episode, I asked her, where are you at? Are you
12:04dating this? And she said, no. And then I was done with it. Yeah. Of course, it continued to go
12:08because you know how it is. You know, other people get with everything. It's shade. Yeah.
12:12Back and forth. But ultimately, I want you to do what she's passionate about. I'm excited for her.
12:19And yeah, Atlanta, it was a mecca of all. Amazing. I mean, Jermaine Dupree, Ryan Cox. I mean,
12:24there's the list goes on. RL, B-flat. But she chose Dennis. The album is great. Of course,
12:33she seems to not mind it. They spelled all those rumors, I guess. So, hey. Yeah. Good luck. So you
12:40say you're ending the season with a bang. What would you say we can expect to come? Showcasing
12:46my music. All of it. You know, and I'm not done with my album just yet, but I am, you know, recording
12:54my video, my video shoot. And I mean, they'll get to really see me perform. Yes. It's one thing to play
13:03a song in the studio. They hear it or you can hear it on the radio, but to perform it, I'm a performer.
13:09Mm-hmm. And I'm excited that I actually get a chance to do that. And I just want to watch a song.
13:15And I love them. They're like my babies. So I just hope that people accept them and they feel,
13:20they feel the intent behind them, the passion, and the love. I had you all do it with them.
13:25Okay? I love that. I really appreciate you. Love and support that instance. And that's
13:29it for Shawnee. That is nothing for God. Thank you. For real.
