00:00One of my favorite songs from you, and I have several, is Crown.
00:03Yes!
00:04Right?
00:05Yes, yes, yes.
00:06And I remember I was given a Crown Award last year, and when I posted about it, that was the song that I used,
00:12because that song has been a mantra for my hair journey.
00:16Wow.
00:16Has it really?
00:17Yes.
00:18Like, I worked in corporate America for so long and had every hairstyle but locks,
00:22because somebody told me I can't do it.
00:24And when I changed it, I thought I was going to get fired for changing my hair.
00:28And so, that song became the mantra of my courageous decision to rock it anyway.
00:35Wow.
00:35Right?
00:36Yeah.
00:36But we also don't talk enough about hair in the conversation about beauty.
00:40We don't.
00:40So, what was that song about, and what is hair care to you?
00:44What does that mean to you in the context of beauty?
00:46I mean, as far as hair care is concerned for me, you got to remember, Tina was the one I grew up with.
00:53Do y'all know who Tina is?
00:54Sorry, Tina knows.
00:57Just checking.
00:58Absolutely.
00:59You know, I was raised in a hair salon with her.
01:03I saw so many different beautiful brown women coming into this hair salon,
01:08rocking different hair colors and textures and this and that.
01:13And they made me feel like hairstyles was, like, limitless.
01:18You know, like, I could do anything.
01:19Like, I remember Tina cut my hair, and I was like, ooh, she's flosh.
01:23Ooh, keep this short haircut.
01:25But then it was, okay, I had the little, like, red hair with the flips.
01:28That was definitely a phase.
01:30Oh, I remember that.
01:30I love that look.
01:31Oh, I love that, too.
01:32I tried, but it didn't work on me.
01:34No, I'm just, I'm trying to cut me a new one, a wig that looks like that.
01:40So y'all might see that pop up.
01:40Don't order one for your girl.
01:41I'll send you a demo.
01:43But I feel like my hair journey was fun because Tina made it fun for me.
01:49And she made it feel like, no, she's like, you can do whatever you want.
01:52She was like, now you're, like, in this different space.
01:55As an artist, you can be creative.
01:57Like, have fun with your hair.
01:59And that's exactly what I did.
02:01Yeah.
02:01Yeah.
02:02Do you feel there's consequence for having fun with your hair in your industry?
02:05I think that sometimes, you know, it's a lot of people who have something to say.
02:09I don't really care about what they say anymore.
02:10Can you say that again for the people in the back?
02:12I don't really give a about what anybody says.
02:17I have a good time with hair.
02:19And I'm sorry, you asked me about Crown.
02:20Crown actually came around through another brand, actually through Dove.
02:24And I remember we did the song, but I had this conversation with those young girls in the Crown video.
02:30And each of them had their own personal story of their hair journey and what that was like from being called different names at school.
02:37And there were different racial backgrounds of these young ladies.
02:41Yeah.
02:41And I loved that the most because they were so open about their story and so young to be so bold to talk about their story.
02:48Yeah.
02:48And it made me so proud to be a part of that campaign.
02:51So I'm grateful when brands do that, too.
02:53Yes.
02:54It's so important because young girls need to see themselves reflected and their stories reflected so that they know they're not the only ones going through that.
03:01And I also think we don't talk enough about what is the mental health consequence of brands pushing an ideal of beauty that's unattainable.
03:09I've said it before.
03:10I think that what's happening with these unattainable, manipulated pictures of beauty is creating a health crisis where people are taking their lives because they can't go after it.
03:18And we've got to start saving souls out here.
03:23We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:24We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:25We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:26We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:27We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:28We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:29We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:30We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:31We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:32We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:33We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:34We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:35We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:36We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:37We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:38We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:39We've got to start saving souls out here.
03:40We've got to start saving souls out here.
