00:00content in general, I think, could have a big impact on how we see each other and how we see
00:05ourselves. And that can be positive or negative. And I, you know, I try to look at the positive
00:12side of things. And that's why we try to be involved with positive content that can show
00:17us in different ways. Because I think that those images, they do seep into us.
00:23Hi, I'm Rivera with Essence. Thank you both so much for taking the time to speak with me today.
00:31How are you? Good to see you. Good to see you as well. Thank you. Doing well. I just did want to
00:37start off by asking, this movie is super stylized. It's very funny and, you know, gives like a
00:43exploitation vibe, but it is kind of dealing with, you know, more serious subject matter the deeper
00:48you go into it. What made each of you want to kind of tell this tale this way?
00:54Well, we were blown away when, when Joelle and Tony pitched it to us, we were like,
00:59what can Macro do to be involved in this project in any way? We already had worked with them in
01:03television. There were like eight other studios that wanted it. And we were just very fortunate
01:08that they chose us to be their collaborator, one of their collaborators on it. And it was first and
01:15foremost, we knew it was going to be fun. And we knew it was going to be like, like provocative.
01:21We so believed in their voice and we're just excited to do something that was very different.
01:27And, you know, I'm also, we're also love sci-fi. We had, you know, had not developed a,
01:33you know, a broad sci-fi film yet. And, and so we thought that the combination of all these
01:40things would be really smart, but then also at the same time would have something to say
01:44while being fun and, um, let's pass it on to Joelle.
01:49Yeah. I mean, I think things like the approach, you know, uh, our goal was just to make something
01:54that we would enjoy if we went to see it, you know what I mean? And so I think like a big part
02:00of the approach was definitely not to be preachy or didactic. Uh, you know, it's, it's some dark
02:07stuff in the movie, but, uh, that's, that was definitely on the back burner for first and
02:13foremost, I think like a big part of why we leaned into, you know, the tone and the style and the vibes
02:21was, you know, it's just trying to create a world that like we want to live in and like see on the
02:28screen. You know what I mean? And so I think that was really kind of guiding the approach.
02:33Now, given that, um, I know you said the pitch, of course, is one of those things where
02:37you're automatically drawn to it, the way the story is told and even the subject matter, like,
02:42you know, especially I feel like in our community, really love like conspiracy theory. So I did want
02:45to ask each of you in a lighthearted way. Um, say for instance, that conspiracy was real.
02:50What do you think the things are that we deal with in society today that really has like kind
02:56of a chokehold on our community that could, could control us?
02:59You said, say the conspiracies are real. What things are, what things are presently could
03:08be had a chokehold on us?
03:10Yes.
03:12Uh, huh. That's a good question. Uh, modern conspiracy chokeholds. I'm not going to go get
03:22off my lawn. So I'm going to go away from music. Uh, I'm, I'm, I'm going to steer away
03:28from music and say, uh, social media in general, I think got a chokehold, you know what I'm saying?
03:34Uh, in terms of like how we perceive ourselves, you know what I'm saying? Uh, so that's what
03:39I would, I would say, uh, um, I was social media, but also maybe, um, sometime content
03:49in general, I think has a, could have a big impact on how we see each other and how we
03:54see ourselves. And, um, and that can be positive or negative. And I, you know, I try to look
04:00in the positive side of things. And, uh, and that's why we try to be involved with positive
04:05content that can show us in different ways. Cause I think that those images, they do seep
04:12into us in some ways and can inspire, or it could, you know, reinforce negative things.
04:18So we try to find ways for it to be the positive side of things.
