00:00Welcome back y'all. Monica ain't nobody to be played with. She's not no joke. Oh my goodness.
00:06I mean every time that she gets on stage I have chills. One of my favorite R&B artists growing up
00:12listening to her. Monica is iconic. I love her. Yes. She's a beast. Speaking of a beast and a woman
00:17that is holding it down in the fashion game. Not playing. Right now we have the pleasure of having
00:22Miss Kalana Barfield Brown with us. Fashion expert especially when it comes to doing things with
00:29Target as well. Kalana thank you so much for hanging out with us. Thank you so much Roxy.
00:33Thank you guys for having me. First of all tell us how has your Essence experience been so far?
00:37Essence for me is always such an amazing experience because it literally feels like a family reunion of
00:44distance cousins. Like you walk down the street it's just sisterhood. It's just family. It's always a
00:50great vibe. I love it. Listen first of all congratulations. Thank you. You're making it
00:54happen. You're in Target. And that's a place like listen I always tell people Target her.
00:59You know like fly with her. Take her to Target. She's gonna go crazy. She's gonna love it.
01:03Love Target. Yes. And to see a sister in Target is major. Thank you. That means so much to me. And
01:09honestly it has been the biggest dream come true. And the support of black women has been just
01:16mind-blowing for me. What was it like being able to be in the process of creating your own line
01:22with Target? Like walk us through how that even happened. And for young women that are aspiring
01:27to be just like you what should they do? I think the for young I'll start with the last part of the
01:32question. I think for young women who are aspiring to work in fashion or to to build a career I think
01:38you know if you're starting from the beginning like you have to be willing to intern. You have to be
01:43willing to put in work and you have to do it just to learn the craft. You can't think that everything's
01:48going to happen immediately overnight. And then I think it's just being super focused on on your
01:55goals. Being someone who's willing to learn and to listen and someone who's willing to just put in
02:01the work. With Target it was such an incredible process. It took us about a year for my for the
02:07whole process of my line to come out. But they were such incredible partners because they let me
02:12do me. They never shoved anything down my throat. They let me then they trusted my creative process.
02:19Whatever it is I wanted to do they listened and and we made it happen. Well listen we got to get you
02:24some of her stuff from Target so you get it. Oh yeah. I'm down girl. Please send it over. I will. I never say no to clothes. Okay. Never. Ever. Ever say no to clothes. But speaking of clothes and fashion we're celebrating 50 years of hip-hop. It feels like the old school fashion and hip-hop is coming back. We're back to rocking the baggy jeans.
02:42And the oversized jackets which I love. Me too. But when you see the evolve how hip-hop and
02:49fashion have evolved. What's some of your favorite moments? I mean I always feel like
02:53what's old is always new again. So seeing the cycle is always you know just
02:58interesting. But right now I'm I'm I'm definitely kind of a chic tomboy girl. So
03:04like I love love love love love oversized. I love to be comfortable. But I also love
03:10to be sexy. So I'll put a pair of heels on with a track pant. That's been my style
03:15forever. But it's also a reference to hip-hop. Like when you think about when I
03:19think about growing up I love TLC. You know and so so much of what I see in
03:24fashion is like what they were doing back then. TLC. I was like that that Aaliyah girl.
03:30Yes. Little crop top. Exactly. With the baggy jeans. It was my favorite thing. Yes. To see
03:35wear. And then the fellas are keeping it really fly now too. Yes. Yes. I love it. I feel like
03:40joggers are like a big thing. It's all it's even just kind of like a trainer's shoe. You know it's
03:45like a New Balance shoe. It's like the moment right now. And so I love it because it's all about
03:50comfort. And ultimately that's what I want to do is I want to be comfortable. Because I feel
03:54like when you aren't comfortable it it it never resonates. Keeps your energy up too. Exactly.
03:59Listen we appreciate having you. Thank you. Let's keep doing your thing. Don't stop. We got more
04:04performance coming your way. And you need to prepare yourself. Because Missy Elliott is coming.
04:11And she's going to light up the stage later tonight. And you won't want to miss this.
04:15We're going to be involved too. We're going to make sure we get our wrist. Exactly. We're going to get our
04:18lights so hot too. LED is going crazy. All right. But right now the South has got something to say.
04:23So get ready for Jermaine Debris, Big Boy, Gucci Man, T.I., Little John, and Luda.
04:28He's going down.
