Transcript
00:00Hi, my name is Jordan Childs. I am part of the Team USA Gymnastics team.
00:04Hi everyone, I'm Shailice Jones and I am an artistic gymnast.
00:08I'm Asia Wilson and I'm a professional basketball player.
00:14How are you prioritizing wellness and self-care while training?
00:18I just make sure it comes number one. You know, if your mental is not right and your wellness is not right,
00:22then you're not going to compete at your best.
00:24So, just making sure that everything is 100% before you go out there and compete at your best is the number one thing to go.
00:31I think the beautiful thing about training for the Olympics or everything in between is that the Olympics is right in the middle of our season.
00:36So, I kind of get a head start because I'm already in that type of form of training.
00:41But yeah, I really put that first, whether that's going to bed early or putting my phone down to really make sure that I'm rested and ready for the task.
00:47What are you most excited about Paris and attending the Olympic Games and participating?
00:52The most exciting thing about Paris and the Olympic Games, I'm really just, you know, excited to do it all over again.
01:01I was able to do Tokyo, so now leading up into Paris, it's going to be really fun. It's going to be amazing.
01:06I can't wait because there's a lot of gymnasts out there that are really, really talented.
01:09So, it should be really fun just to see all of our performances and do everything that we know we can do.
01:14Just enjoying the moment, you know. I feel like we've all worked so hard to be out there.
01:18So, just actually, you know, being out there on this stage would be awesome.
01:22This will be my first Olympics outside of the pandemic.
01:25So, just having the opportunity for my family to come and see me play on the world's biggest stage is definitely what I'm most excited about.
01:32Just to have people in the stands, it's definitely going to be a lot of fun.
01:34How important is it for you to represent black women at the Olympic Games?
01:38It means so much.
01:39I feel like we've all been training so hard for this and I feel like the community is just, you know, super strong and it's growing by the minute.
01:45So, like we just made history at the world championships.
01:48I hope to do it again in Paris.
01:49It's super important for me to represent black women at the Olympic Games.
01:52I mean, I have a tatanomi, unapologetic.
01:54It's something that I try to be every single day because I want to be true to myself and show other people that they can do the same.
01:59And so, for me to be a black woman in these spaces, in these places, it's a joy to be in and I'm super blessed.
02:04It's really, really important.
02:05Honestly, the diversity not only in my sport but also other sports around have been, you know, really, really deep diving into the culture about everything.
02:14So, for me, it's really cool.
02:16It's always going to be in history books.
02:18It's always going to be something that I'll be able to, you know, tell my kids or even the younger generation that no matter the skin color, no matter the looks or anything like that, you just embrace who you are and be authentic to who you are.
02:28So, knowing that I do that for myself and hoping that that younger generation will do the same.
02:32And I'm really, really honored to be a part of that community for sure.
02:36How are you staying fit?
02:37Can you give us an overview of your fitness routine?
02:40Yes.
02:40How do I stay fit?
02:41Well, I really just kind of work out a lot.
02:43I know that's cliche but I actually kind of do.
02:45Anytime that I'm having downtime or something that I'm just like, let me just go to the gym and get some shots up and work out.
02:50And obviously, in season, we're working out every single day.
02:52So, I try to stay fit with that.
02:54But my diet, I need to work on that a little bit more but we'll get to that.
02:57I start every morning with my physical therapy and then I go into practice at 1 o'clock.
03:02I'm there training.
03:03I do conditioning for about two hours afterwards and then I'm done around 6, 7.
03:07What do you love most about being a black woman?
03:10Ooh, what do I love most about being a black woman?
03:13The versatility.
03:14I feel like as black women, we can do a lot of different things whether it's with our hair, whether that's with our style.
03:19And the way that we enter into rooms, I feel like we brighten them up instantly.
03:21And I love that about me.
03:23I love that about us as black women.
03:24And continue to strive for those high, high ceilings that we can go after always.
03:29I love the strength and the beauty that it comes with.
03:31I feel like some people overlook us but I feel like we have everything and more that everyone else has.
03:36What do you love most about your culture and bringing it to Paris?
03:41What do I love about my culture and bringing it to Paris?
03:45Knowing that we have the ability to put our minds and do anything, really.
03:52Like as powerful as we are, whether women, men, like we are very powerful.
03:57We are dominant in what we do.
03:58And I'm really, really excited just to be able to present that and do the things that, you know, at the end of the day, we are strong, independent women or strong, independent men.
04:08So it's really cool just to be able to, like, you know, showcase that for sure.
04:12Best piece of advice for black women following their dreams?
04:15Hmm, the advice I would give for black women following their dreams would have to be be true to you.
04:20Be true to you and don't let anyone change you off of that.
04:23If that's your goal is dream big, have fun with that and never switch up.
04:26I think sometimes we have to code switch or wear a mask.
04:28Take that mask off and be true to yourself.
04:30Believe in yourself.
04:31Really embrace your beauty.
04:34Stay strong, you know, and anything is possible, really.
04:36You got to go.
04:37You got to go.
