00:00conflict is just it's just more interesting it's it's heartbreaking it's painful but it's just
00:05it's just more interesting to watch and and so you got you you have that marital conflict that
00:11they have to deal with together but also separately and so we all have to sort of take our own
00:17individual walks you know what I mean and I think that um I think that's going to be fun and
00:23interesting to watch like what Lucille what Nicole has to go through singularly in her moments alone
00:31and then I think also for Charles as well and then how do they deal with that my sons did not come
00:37from a broken home they came from a broken city our city I'm not asking you to forgive my son I just
00:45want to see him alive you know season two kind of finds both of your characters in a situation
00:55where you're losing a lot more of the control that you maybe thought they had over the kids and you
01:01know over themselves and each other how do you feel things are different for your characters
01:05in season two than they were in season one like what can the fans expect I think in season one
01:11you know they were there was more time to bond and um and the foundation was was stronger and then
01:20in season two the struggle becomes greater because they they are losing so much um and it's it's so much
01:29just to maintain just to keep a roof over their head to keep the lights on to keep the gas on
01:35it's a struggle and and and you know the process of that sometimes you just start to miss things and you
01:42can't really give in all the same ways that you did it before because you're just trying to keep your head
01:50above water so it's challenging more this season lots of obstacles yeah I mean um I think that we we really
02:01get an opportunity to see um the full depth and breadth of Charles and Lucille both as a couple and
02:09as an individuals I think we we get a chance to really see this uh relationship dynamic marriage sort
02:17of play out and see all the different colors uh that they have um in their relationship and I think
02:24that you know what also conflict is just it's just more interesting it's it's heartbreaking it's painful
02:29but it's just it's just more interesting to watch and and so you got you you have that marital conflict
02:36that they have to deal with together but also separately and so we all have to sort of take our
02:42own individual walks you know what I mean and I think that um I think that's going to be fun and
02:48interesting to watch like what Lucille what Nicole has to go through singularly in her moments alone
02:56and then I think also for Charles as well and then how do they deal with that and then what
03:01what happens as a result what is the result of of uh uh these obstacles that they're that they're
03:08facing now how each of you felt about the um fan response to your characters you know in season one
03:13well clearly no one thinks season two yet but I think that a lot of times since the the characters um
03:18Meech and T are kind of seen as the story's heroes it's kind of hard sometimes for fans to understand
03:24a lot of the stances their parents are taking what have you felt about some of the online discourse
03:29uh surrounding the way that the parents are behaving towards their sons and you know a lot of the power
03:34struggle in the back and forth man I'm gonna tell you something I felt like after season one man I felt
03:40like I am somebody I feel like people knew who I think people know who I am now I feel like
03:49I'm telling you I feel like I got discovered because of BMF uh we always know who both of you
03:56are don't do that no no it's it's it's some different thing like I feel like I'm hood rich
04:01you know what I'm saying
04:02you know what I mean no um no but listen it's been it's been lovely it's been endearing
04:10it's um to like again to go places and people see you and they recognize and respect the work that
04:18you're doing you can see people's responses the genuine heartfelt response to the show
04:26but also to the characters and to the relationship um that that to me is everything quite honestly
04:34you know um because what for me it says I walk away going they got it they get it they got it and
04:44they appreciate it and and I am humbled and honored by that exchange that I get from people and from
04:53audiences when I see them on the street or whatever what have you that that's what moves me more than
05:00anything and ditto I mean I I've been really surprised at um uh people acknowledging the value
05:08of the parents and the foundation that they have created for them and really knowing and understanding
05:17where they really came from and that they were built up with love and support and uh a real deep
05:25spiritual background and understanding of that and um they gave them everything they could but what was
05:32outside the home um they couldn't protect them from from all of that and they needed more support than
05:40what was available to them and they wanted to do everything that they could to take care of their
05:46family and they did the best they could with what they had it makes sense I think you kind of touched
05:52on it but how does it feel seeing as how both of you are pretty much staple actors for a lot of us
05:59from you know in the millennial generation such as myself and some gen xers but I feel like through
06:03this show you're kind of getting introduced to a new younger audience you know the gen z's hopefully
06:09not too young but you are getting introduced to a new audience what is it like to kind of get a new
06:14a new resurgence of interest in each of you all's careers when we've all known you like from
06:19so many things from the 90s and the 2000s to now
06:22it's everything I think yeah no I think that you know listen we all want to be relevant
06:34you know what I mean and in growing up me and my boys used to have a term it's called being current
06:39and and the reality of it is you stay current and relevant through the youth and and so
06:46if you can keep yourself in never never land you know what I mean you will you will stay you will
06:53stay with you stay relevant and I think that this show because of obviously the subject matter and
06:59obviously because you know meets Terry Young it appeals to youth appeals to young people but we get our
07:07presence is is appreciated and uh and the work is appreciated so we're going I got young kids saying
07:16yo that's that's meets daddy you know what I'm saying that's it made me feel it makes me feel good but
07:22it's keeping us current and I and I think that you you know we want to keep both of us want to keep
07:28working well into our later years and but you also want to do uh work of distinction do you know what I mean
07:37it's not just about having a job it's about being doing work of distinction and work that matters and I think
07:44that this is work of distinction and I think that when you continue to do work like this uh it gives
07:50you an opportunity to do more work uh such as this ditto I I I agree 100% I mean I'm just I'm just filled
07:59with gratitude to have the opportunity to be a part of this particular show because I think the story is
08:07so authentic and and and and to be able to represent this story that's based on a true story and this real family and I just feel honored
08:17honored honored I feel like it's it's it's it's really good work that we're doing I'm honored to have the opportunity to work with one of my dearest friends Russell Hornsby um and we have such an amazing history together and get together where we know we can come and do quality work and really support each other.
08:25um and lay a strong foundation for the team and I'm just I'm just thankful I really am awesome you actually mentioned you guys have such a good you know working relationship together through the years and you're both veteran actors um a lot of people on the show a lot of your stars the young stars are kind of I'm the
08:54new to acting. Are you able to kind of provide them with some tips or mentorship along the way
09:00as they're, you know, thrust into these starring positions, but it's kind of a new thing.
09:05Absolutely. We give as much as we can often, and particularly in season one, there was so much more
09:12to give. You know, this is Little Meech's first time acting, and it was just such a joy to see
09:18him from the beginning. Like, I had the scene with him in the bedroom in season one, and we
09:24just had this deep, energetic connection where I think he, you know, somewhat kind of a transformation
09:30or this initiation into the business in that way, and he just had a really great, a real breakthrough
09:37moment that was awesome to witness and to be a part of, and to see them now, you know, they're
09:44just growing. It's not as much as they need this season as they did last season. They're stepping
09:51into their, these big shoes now and, and, and filling them, and, you know, Da Vinci has
09:57been doing, he did Broadway last year, which was so, you know, I went to the opening of that
10:03to see him, and, and it's just been amazing to watch, watch their, their journeys. So it's
10:10been wonderful. I think for me, it was, uh, art, life imitated art or art imitated life.
10:18I think that I had a, I think that it was much like in season one, Charles's character
10:24was like, Russell was like overbearing, like, you know, season one where I was like, hey,
10:30you guys are doing it wrong. What you doing? And, you know, get your, hey, hey, I'm the
10:34set. You're on, you're late. You know, all this kind of stuff like that. And then I think
10:38when season two came along, I had a great, more of a hands-off approach. You know what
10:43I mean? It was just like, I was just less overbearing. I wasn't sitting over them. And
10:47I, I had to recognize that they, they have, they have gotten older. They're a little bit
10:53more, they're more mature, but also they have to sort of succeed and fail on their own in
10:58a certain sense. You know what I mean? And so it's not, it wasn't my job anymore. I didn't
11:02take it upon and coming upon me to say to be as Charlesy. So, and I, and so what I did
11:13is I just watched from afar. And so where, where I felt like I needed to insert myself
11:19in the few times that I did, that I did that. And then I just backed up and you watch them
11:24do things and make mistakes. And then what I also did, much like being a parent, you know,
11:28you, you, you see the mistake or something happened. And then you say, Hey, you know,
11:34you know, you could happen differently, right? Yeah, I know you couldn't. All good. And I walk
11:40away. You know what I mean? And I think that we just had a, we just have a different rapport.
11:45And I had, I realized Russell, the actor had to respect them as men or young, as young adults
11:53and as individuals and, and, and because it's a different time as well. And so I had to keep
11:59that in mind. And so, you know, I did, and we had a lot of fun and, you know, just the relationship
12:03had grown in a different way. Wonderful. Now, before we wrap up, can you each just let me know one
12:10thing that you're really looking forward to, I guess as you, as much as you can, without giving
12:13spoilers, that you're looking forward to the fans seeing from your characters this season?
12:18Yeah. I'm looking forward to the fan scene where Lucille ends up in season two. I can't
12:27say much about it, but, but she definitely ends up in a different place than, than where
12:33she began.
12:35Yeah. You know, I'm just, you know, I'm, I'm looking for just to see Charles have some
12:41fun. They get a chance to see Charles, they get a chance to see Charles with a little smile
12:45on his face, you know what I mean, this season. And I'm looking forward to that. Like, he's
12:50not just walking around like mean on time, you know what I mean? Like, we get to see him,
12:54you know, with a little smile, a little, a little, a little, a little bit. So I'm looking
13:02forward to that and the response from that.
13:06Awesome. Well, thank you both so much for your time today.
