U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has urged Congress to require body-worn cameras for federal immigration agents nationwide, calling executive actions alone insufficient for real accountability. The push comes amid the Biden administration’s rollout of body cameras for agents in Minneapolis after controversial fatal shootings, and as lawmakers negotiate broader immigration enforcement reforms tied to Department of Homeland Security funding. Schumer insists legislation is needed to ensure transparency and public trust.

00:00Yesterday, Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, who for some reason still has a job,
00:05she should have been fired long ago, announced that all federal immigration agents in Minneapolis
00:10are going to begin wearing body cameras. I want to be very clear about something.
00:16Kristi Noem does not get participation points by saying agents are going to start doing something
00:21they should have done all along. And why just Minneapolis? This policy, which is the right
00:28policy, should be nationwide. There's no reason to delay that. Most importantly, executive actions
00:37alone will never be enough for the American people. We need to pass legislation. We know
00:42how whimsical Donald Trump is. He'll say one thing one day and retract it the next. Same with
00:49Secretary Noem. So we don't trust some executive order, some pronouncement from some cabinet
00:55secretary. We need it enshrined into law. And what Democrats want is exceedingly common
01:03sense. We need to end the roving patrols. This means we need arrest warrants and an end to
01:09racial profiling. Second, we need accountability. ICE needs to abide by the same rules as local
01:17police, including embedded investigations. And there has to be real accountability forcing
01:22them to do so when they don't. And third, masks need to come off and cameras need to stay
01:29on. Every police officer, every ICE officer should do what every police officer or just
01:34about every police officer in America does have an ID. Every citizen knows when they meet
01:41a police officer or sheriff, their ID is clear on them. That's always been the accountability
01:50that we've had for decades and decades. And Noem thinks, and some people think, like Speaker
01:58Johnson thinks, we shouldn't do it. Why is Johnson pro-secret police? It's absurd for the Speaker
02:06and others like him to argue that masked ICE agents should get special treatment and be held
02:12to a different standard from just about every law enforcement agency in the country. Sheriffs,
02:16local police, traffic cops. You don't see them with masks, do you? No. Defending ICE agents wearing
02:25masks and giving them special treatment, especially when they're so brutal and thuggy, is totally
02:32against the views of most Americans who want basic accountability. Anyone defending ICE agents
02:38keeping their masks on is not seriously trying to solve this huge problem of chaos we have seen
02:44in Minneapolis and so many of our other cities when ICE is sent in there. And it begs the question,
02:53why are some Republicans speaking so loudly trying to defend masked secret police? Is it that these
03:01new ICE hires weren't qualified as police officers at other departments? Could it be that some of them
03:07were kicked out of police departments? And then they signed up to snatch people off the streets and beat
03:15protesters up with impunity? Because that's what they wanted to do? The American people have a right to
03:21know and the first step is identifying who they are. And finally, I want to make one other very
03:29important point. Since the death of Alex Preddy and Renee Good, nothing meaningful has changed about ICE's abuses.
03:38Nothing meaningful has changed about ICE's abuses, even since the deaths of Preddy and Good. Last week in
03:47Portland, Oregon, federal agents fired tear gas at a crowd of demonstrators that included children. There's a video
03:54circulating online of an agent, Colorado, stealing a woman's phone when she tried to get it back. The agent
04:00shoved her to the ground, yanked her by the hair, and then battered her. If you saw that video, it turned
04:07your stomach. And Greg Bovino, the disgraced chief thug, former head of the Border Patrol, is seen in another
04:18video trying to motivate agents by saying, quote, this is what Bovino said, arrest as many people who
04:25touch you as you want. Those are the general orders way from the top. This is absolutely not, not, not
04:32what the American people signed up for. Republicans in Congress need to see the chaos and realize it's
04:40finally time for ICE to be reined in.
