00:01Drivers using the time tunnel are set to pay more within months after council leaders approved a rise in toll charges.
00:08An increase of up to 20 pence will take effect on 1 May, following a vote by members of the North East Combined Authority cabinet at a meeting in Blythe.
00:18Under the new charges, the Class 2 toll for cars, vans and buses, weighing less than 3.5 tonnes, will rise by 10 pence to £2.60.
00:26The Class 3 toll covering larger vehicles, including LGVs and HGVs, will increase by 20 pence.
00:34The authority says the tolls charged to motorists should remain as close as possible to that level to avoid major financial losses.
