00:00Welcome to Black Girl Magic Headquarters.
00:02Yes, absolutely.
00:03You should feel the magic.
00:04Oh my goodness, that's essence.
00:06That would be essence.
00:09So I have to say congratulations on your new joint venture with Sane Girl and Motown Gospel.
00:18Can you tell me a little bit about this new venture in your life?
00:23Oh gosh.
00:24So as an artist, I think that as we grow, and thank God I'm still around, what, almost
00:3230 years later, you want to grow and kind of be the captain of your own ship, you know,
00:39the controller of your destiny.
00:41And so the joint venture part of it really was an opportunity for me to work with a name
00:48that is grounded in Black music, historically so, for all the right reasons.
00:54And kind of be able to still be in charge of what it is that I'm doing with my own music
01:01these days.
01:02And so it was an interesting thing.
01:05I did a throwback post sometime last year talking about the last time I put out a gospel project,
01:13which is now 16 years ago.
01:15And our friend EJ Gaines, who is actually one of the executives at the label, saw me posted
01:23and he came up underneath.
01:24He was like, hey, is your number still the same?
01:28And check your DMs.
01:30And so quick DM chat led to a telephone conversation, led to a flight to Nashville, a meeting that
01:37went extremely well.
01:39And then this joint venture between Motown Gospel and myself, my company.
01:43So yeah, it was a great place to land.
01:45And then to come back 16 years later with a gospel project.
01:50And I just feel like the timing right now is a great time.
01:54It's a great time to be reminded of the reasons why we should be grateful.
01:59Last year was a rough year.
02:00And so gospel music is the music of my faith.
02:05It's the music of my soul.
02:08I have always been a church girl, no matter what I was singing.
02:12And when I need to get through something, that's the music that comes to me when I'm
02:16walking around the house.
02:17It's when I'm walking around the house.
02:19And so it was how I started on my own road to healing after losing my grandfather and
02:25my mother last year.
02:26And I wanted to share it.
02:29I wanted to share it.
02:30It's been the gift of music for me.
02:32The biggest gift of it has been the thing that I have that enables me to make it a gift
02:38to others as well.
02:40So you blessed me first.
02:41And now I'm really hoping that it'll bless somebody else.
02:44That's amazing.
02:45And I love that you say about what everyone collectively went through last year with the
02:52COVID-19 pandemic.
02:54When you really think about 16 years ago, what it looked like for you to release a gospel
03:01record.
03:02In today's world, gospel is, in my opinion, we need it, right?
03:09Like we really, really need it.
03:11This single, Grace, can you tell us where that came from?
03:15So this is so interesting and also a part of my very intentional timing of the releasing
03:23of this project.
03:24My baby sister, Sakina Grace, passed on Easter Sunday morning seven years ago.
03:31And it was Easter Sunday morning last year that my grandfather passed from COVID.
03:36And so for the last few years, Easter weekend has not been a happy time in my life for so
03:44many reasons.
03:45And getting to the end of the year and wanting to get in the studio to record so I can kind
03:51of take my mind off of things.
03:53We lost my mom at the end of the year.
03:55And I decided to intentionally position myself in a place where I could be free to just express
04:02myself, which at any time for me is going into the studio to write, to record, to do
04:07whatever.
04:07And so I spent the month of December in the studio almost every day, recording, writing,
04:16and just kind of pouring out of my soul.
04:19And so it was interesting because Motown actually thought that I was going to want to push the
04:25project back because I did lose my mother at the end of the year.
04:28And I called everyone together to tell them, no, I don't want to push the project back.
04:32I need to do this now.
04:34You're taking your power back.
04:35And for you to use your gift continuously, I mean, not just with your gospel music, a
04:41lot of people can probably argue that some of your R&B records are gospel to them.
04:47I think so.
04:48Yeah, absolutely.
04:49Because your music has really helped to heal people and get them through tough times in
04:55their lives.
04:56What does that mean to you to be able, when people probably come up to you and say, Kelly,
05:01this song took me from A to Z when I didn't know, you know, when I didn't know if I could
05:07make it through?
05:08I'm going to tell you, it really means everything.
05:11I know I can listen to any song of mine and automatically be back in the place where I
05:17was at the time that I wrote it, recorded it, whatever was going on in my life.
05:21And to hear stories down through the years from people who can identify with the messages
05:27inside of the music because they were living through some of the same things or perhaps,
05:31you know, whatever was going on in their life, it takes them to a place in time.
05:35I always love to hear that people can relate to my music because it was something that helped
05:41lift them out of a place of loneliness or darkness or a broken heart or whatever.
05:45You know, life happens.
05:47And I talk about life in all of my music, whether it's gospel or R&B, but I like the
05:53fact that I have the opportunity that I can talk about, you know, what happens in life
05:58and everything that happens in life isn't always a good thing, but I always have the ability
06:02in my music to bring it back around to hope, to faith, to love, to better days, to better
06:07times.
06:08On this project, to a dance party.
06:12And that song for me is so important because I watched people last year be intentional about
06:19trying to remain busy and keep their minds in a happy place.
06:22And so between the dance parties that people threw at home, there were people who were by
06:26themselves with their pets for months at a time, you know, and having to be intentional
06:32about not, you know, getting depressed or letting the pandemic really kind of control where your
06:40headspace was.
06:41It was hard to do for a lot of people, but I think that this project, and again, my reason
06:48for wanting to do it and releasing it sooner rather than later, is to push some hope back
06:54into the world, push some faith, some love, some peace back into the world, and to put some
07:00dancing in our feet.
07:01Kelly Price is performing her new single, Dance Party, off of her album, Grace, releasing
07:08on Good Friday.
07:10Kelly Price, everybody.
07:31When complications have me breaking down and aggravation has me losing ground, I hear a voice that's deep
07:52inside my soul.
07:54It lets me know that God is in control.
07:57I don't need a beat.
07:59I don't need a reason.
08:01Got my hands and feet.
08:02I know how to use them.
08:04I know how to use them and I, I want to dance.
08:07I want to dance.
08:09And I'm gonna do it now.
08:11I want to dance.
08:12Hey, you say.
08:14I want to dance.
08:15You say, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I'm gonna do it now, I wanna dance, and oh, oh, oh, oh, even when nothing has gone my way, and right when I feel like I'm going crazy, I hope it's all that I'm going to stay, so here's what I'll do, I want my dancing to.
08:45Get up and dance, get up and dance, get up and dance, clap your hands to everybody, yeah, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, and I wanna do it now, I wanna dance, hey, yeah, just give me a chance, and let me dance, let me dance, let me dance,
09:15I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, and I wanna do it now, I wanna dance, oh, everybody, hey, get on your feet, get on your feet, yeah, I wanna dance,
09:45I wanna dance, yeah, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, and I wanna do it now, I wanna dance.
09:50I wanna dance, everybody, everybody, yeah, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, and I wanna do it now, I wanna dance.
10:02I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I
10:32now do it now yes so let's get ready for this global dance party we're going there
10:37yeah so tell us a little bit about the challenge and how you are asking fans to submit their
10:43personal dance party yes well you can come to any of my socials i believe you can also go to
10:48motown gospel on ig or facebook and there is a link that is there where it will give you
10:54instructions on how you can make your own dance party video and upload it to the portal um you
11:01will likely see it on my youtube channel or my ig page once you upload it or motowns um we're just
11:09we're inviting the world to join us a global dance party and um really really hoping that people have
11:14some fun with it so your new album is out on friday good friday that is yes so tell everybody what they
11:21can expect from the new gospel album only your second gospel album so we know that we're in for
11:28true uh so you have grace you have dance party i have a cover um of a classic vanessa bell armstrong
11:34song faith that can conquer anything um it's actually the song that um i sang at my mother's
11:41home going service and i decided at the last minute that i wanted to add that to the project
11:46back in january um so that's very very special it's a song that i've been saying my whole life in church
11:52and we had an opportunity my sister and i to send my mother home to god with that song um at the end
11:58of last year and i have a remix of a single that i released independently what i need um which i love
12:05because it takes me back into uh my kelly price hip-hop singer days when i'm like singing on all these
12:13rap records and so um i remixed the that particular song and um i have two really really talented um
12:21independent hip-hop artists on this project with me on that song specifically 901 south and john
12:27connor um previously uh from the aftermath family he is now um releasing his music independently and so
12:33um they laced it with some bars and blessed it and so we got a new version of what i need
12:39um like it just it's it's a mixture of everything and then again because i want us to remember that
12:45it's time to get back to life it's time to get back to living um people are planning weddings and
12:51graduation parties i'm planning a wedding um i want to dance at my own wedding and so i covered
12:58um alicia myers i want to thank you heavenly father so that is traditionally not a gospel song
13:04um but it's a happy song and it's a song um that up that sings to celebrating um the kind of love that
13:13only god can help you find and so um just like i would always put a gospel song on all of my r&b
13:20albums i have flipped the script and every song to the gospel album yes i love that and now you know
13:27this is essence and you just talked a little nugget so what can you tell us exclusively about this
13:33wedding that i have not started planning what i can tell you is i i want to plan for it to be a
13:42destination wedding i want there to be sand and sun and water um because we've been on time out
13:47yes we all want to go outside yes yes absolutely so that's pretty much it will be a destination
13:57wedding i plan on being water that much i do know yes so we could all use a little bit of grace
14:03and we can all just use some fun and some joy and some some uplift to our spirits so i'm so
