00:00Thanks for joining Essence today. We're super excited. I know we've been like trying to get
00:15this interview going, but you've been booked and busy. So thank you for joining today.
00:20First, just wanted to ask, like, how are you? How you're doing? I know like we're still in
00:23this weird pandemic energy, whatever's going on. How are you? How's your family?
00:29Everything's good. Everything's good. Everything's good. Yeah.
00:35Right, right. So recently you've just like taken off, you know, your song on TikTok has kind of
00:41gone and then you've just been really consistent with the music after that. How has this like
00:46success been, I guess, within the last year for you? Success has been really, really well.
00:52Um, I'm just taking it every step at a, you know, slowly step by step and just, I don't
01:02know. It's something new every day. So I have to feel like my record, my hit records are on
01:09Billboard. It's been like a month. So like this success to have a hit record is like, it feels
01:14really, really good.
01:15Right, right. No. So when you're, when it first hit the Billboard, your song, I saw you
01:20were like posting about it and all of that. And then it keeps rising, um, ever since Dirk
01:24got on it. How does that feel to see it like every week rise on the charts?
01:29Um, it feels like my label is happy. My fans are happy. The world is starting to know me
01:37for me and who I am as an artist. It just feels like I'm getting closer to that, you know, major,
01:45major superstar. I'm already a superstar, but you know, I'm almost there. Capitalize off
01:53thing. Right, right. Um, one of the first like places I got introduced to you was you
01:58were doing like a partnership with V-Files. I think this was like a year and a half ago.
02:02Um, it was like a Sprite and, um, V-Files partnership. And you've always been, when I like saw you on
02:07Twitter and Instagram, you've always been just like super confident and like always out there
02:11on IG, but now everyone's starting to get to know like how funny you are and like your personality
02:17on Instagram. How does that feel to have more of the world knowing just like, you've always been
02:24like this, but now they're kind of like, Oh, this clay girl is really funny. And she's like goofy.
02:29How does that feel? It feels good. You know, I've always been the same on and off camera. I'm like,
02:35I'm exactly the same. So yeah, I don't know. It feels good. You know what? It feels good that I'm
02:40the type of person to have so much, like so much for people to look at. I like having content,
02:45you know, so all my content of me dancing or whether it's just chilling, listening to whatever
02:52it is, like people are going back to those videos and looking at them parties or even, um, big.
03:00Right. Speaking of that. Uh, okay. So I asked some of the essence, um, staffers to just send me some
03:08questions for you and they wanted to know how did big come about? They were like, we have to ask you
03:13that question. So, um, how did you link up with Poo Shiesty and how did that record come about?
03:19Um, I linked up with Poo Shiesty in Atlanta. I had a club run, basically like, I had so much
03:25bookings in one weekend. So I was in Atlanta, um, a couple of days, like a whole week actually.
03:31And my management is very cool with his people. So they ended up putting us in the studio and it
03:36just happened for me. Yeah. And, um, and was that when you kind of previewed it at first? Cause I know
03:41you previewed it like when you were in the studio and then came out a few weeks after that, was that
03:46kind of when that happened or you had already done the record before then? Uh, what? Big Prr?
03:52Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
03:53Nah, the day we recorded it was the day I, I previewed it. No, actually no, we recorded it.
03:58It's crazy. When we recorded it, we left the studio without hearing the song.
04:02Oh, it was crazy. Like we just, it was so, it was, it was madly. It was like five o'clock in the
04:09morning. And once Poo laid down his part, we felt like it was finished. And then we dragged the hook
04:15back over where it was supposed to be. Right. We didn't even play it in the studio. So when I went
04:19to my next studio session, I played it. That's when I made that video on TikTok and it went viral.
04:24Yeah. Yeah. Right. And people were already doing like dances and stuff to it before it came out.
04:28I thought that was so cool. Right. Right. Um, so one trend I'm going to kind of switch into like
04:32hair beauty is your braids. Like I kind of see people like naming them the Coilerae braids.
04:38Did you think that you were going to start a, I mean, you wouldn't, even when you wore your
04:42short braids. Don't ask that question with my name being big trendsetter in my head.
04:49I'm like, now everybody is getting those braids. How does it feel to see like, yeah, I started that
04:54or, you know, had, had a hope in that now being like the summer hair trend.
05:00Um, I, I love, okay. So this is what I love. I love when people give me my credit. I love
05:05the fact that they're calling it the Coilerae braids. Like, I just love that because, you
05:10know, it's different when somebody wears the hairstyle and just like takes it like as if,
05:15you know what I'm saying? Right, right, right. Yeah. There's some influencers that done it
05:18and didn't give me no love, no credit, barely like my shit, just watch my shit and get inspired,
05:24whatever. Right. They're all friends. But then you also have people, a couple influencers.
05:29My girl Gaz, she had the Coilerae braids or whatever you want to call them. And she put
05:34no more parties behind the video of her showing it off. I just felt like it's certain, I just
05:39felt like that was like really, really cool. Yeah. Yeah. No, I think behind the scenes,
05:44we all know that this trend is definitely influenced by you. And so I'm excited to
05:49see in the summer, we're going to see, I think we're going to see a lot of more girls rocking
05:53the break. That's why I need to figure out another. No, I feel like it's so signature right
05:59now. Like you're wearing it. I don't have my hair in right now. Oh, it's so cute. This is,
06:04I am bald headed because my mother, I'm starting to realize it's like a jeans thing. Cause my mother's
06:13bald headed and her hair don't go past her shoulders. So my not ever growing, chipping
06:18this length forever. But no, the real, the real Coilerae fans know that you used to wear
06:23your real hair with the real braids, just like you do now. Right, right, right. Did you
06:27know what I'm saying? I'm trying to wear it back out. Yeah, yeah, no, no. Best wishes to
06:32you on that. But also I'm going to kind of stay in the fashion lane, your style. It's super,
06:38you just, you switch, you know, you switch on and off. Some days you're doing like a tomboy
06:41of chic. Some days you're wearing like crop tops and things like that. So do you have
06:45a definite style or just like whatever I like, I like. Whatever I like, I like. It's so crazy
06:51because somebody tweeted today, um, Coilerae dressed like a boy or look like a stud or look
06:57like this, this, this, that, whatever. And I said, I don't dress like a boy. The boys dress
07:01like me. Literally. For real, for real. No, for real. I agree with that. Um, what are some
07:07of your favorite designers right now? If you don't maybe like name me three that you're
07:11kind of just always tapped into?
07:12Hmm. Designers. I mean, Virgil's definitely number one. The amount of things that he's
07:22done in such a little time is amazing. You know, he's definitely a legend. I feel like
07:28Virgil deserves a star on the holiday. I agree. I agree. Um, and then you also have people like
07:35Ian Conner. I feel like he's a super, super fire designer when it comes to this whole sickle
07:40brand. I think that's hard. And Matthew Williams is super crazy. Yeah. And, um, yeah, Matthew
07:54was a goat for sure. Yeah. I like to see Matthew who like started at A-Leaks and like Ben Trill
07:59and then now he's like as Givenchy. It's like, I'd love to see that switch. And now they're
08:03in the high fashion. That's definitely cool. Um, but just kind of wrapping up. Don't want
08:07to take too much of your time. I wanted to know. So you're putting out a lot of music
08:11right now and I've always known you to be consistent. Um, but we're obviously everyone wants to know
08:17like a project, um, you know, like I'll be dropping a project in May. That's what we're aiming for. I've
08:26been working with so much people and been making so much new music. So I really want to make sure
08:31this is my first debut project. Yeah. My, all my other EPs and everything else. Like I've been saving
08:36all my platinum record songs for my project. So I just can't wait. Yes. No, I'm really excited.
08:44And then just wrapping up, wanted to know, like, what can we expect more from you? Um,
08:50in 2021? Like what does the world just need to get ready for the world needs to get ready for me to
08:56stay here and not go nowhere? Cause I'm not going to be here for a long, long time. So make sure
09:01that's right. And the world just need to get used to this little butt. Cause I'm not going to stop
09:05shaking it. I know that's right. Exactly. I love, I love when everyone's like, you leave
09:10Coyla Ray alone because like she's like, Jesus, let me breathe. I can back up today. Like y'all
09:17doing the twerk class. They're making fun of me. I love you. Well, thank you so much for joining
09:22Essence today. We are big fans of you and like, we're just going to support you. And you know,
09:26you always got us here for you. So thanks so much. Thank you so much. Have a wonderful day.
09:32You too. Bye.
