College Student, Philanthropist...Mary Pat Does It All
Transcript
00:00A corporation like Walmart I believe is not only amazing for a community
00:10advocate but as well as college students and I'm an example of that. My name is
00:16Mary Pet Hector I am the National Youth Director of an organization entitled
00:20National Action Network. I am a sophomore at Spelman College and the founder of my
00:26own organization entitled Just Think Twice. My friends Brianna and Nandi are
00:31amazing young women who I believe also just reflect who I am as a person. I met
00:37them before I even came to Spelman. Brianna realized that she wasn't prepared
00:41for college as a computer science major and so she goes back into the West End
00:46community educating girls and equipping them with the correct skills that they
00:49need. Nandi on the other hand is a part of an organization called Lady Buds.
00:55As Spelman students they go back through the middle and high schools to really
01:00mentor girls in the West End community. My friends and I met and bonded because we
01:06understand the importance of educating not only ourselves but empowering our
01:10communities as well as the next generation of young people. We often find
01:15ourselves working with other community leaders just like us who understand the
01:19importance of a dollar and that's why Walmart is so important to us in our
01:23lives and our work. At Walmart we find stylish clothes, supplies, electronics and
01:29everyday products at low prices for ourselves and the people we work with.
01:33Walmart makes it easy for us to do what we love and to stay on trend with the
01:38limited resources we sometimes have as college students. What a community
01:42activist means to me is a person who just gives their time and their heart to
01:48uplifting the community and the next generation of young people. You really
01:54just have to understand the importance of a dollar and Walmart understands the
01:58importance of a dollar with all of its amazing products at low prices. It's
02:03always been there for me. You pretty much have to be on go like 24 hours a day and
02:07Walmart is always there for me as an activist and as a college student.
02:18Spelman always had a great name especially in the city of Atlanta and
02:22every black woman that I had met from Spelman College that was anywhere in any
02:29field was amazing and I looked at them and I looked at their era and I watched how
02:33they carried themselves and just how smart and intelligent they were about any and
02:39everything that they talked about and I admired them and I wanted to be just like
02:44them and so at the age of nine years old I knew I had to go to Spelman College and
02:49so when I got that acceptance letter it changed my life.
02:53Black girl magic to me is something that all black women have that can't be
03:05appropriated or assimilated it's just something that's in them and it's their
03:09personality it's the way they carry themselves it's their beauty and it's the
03:13way that they use all of those things to really bring change upon the world.
03:18College to me and my friends is more than just books it's a place where I can
03:25show what I love to do and help others at the same time.
03:28Walmart makes it easy to do both.
03:38To whom much is given much is required and I've been given so much as a community
03:44activist and just as a young person who's you know experienced and endured so much
03:49growing up and I believe because I've been given so much I'm required to give
03:54back and so philanthropy is my magic.
