00:01Today on Essence Live, we're live on Facebook.
00:04Evelyn Lozada is live in studio and will be answering your questions.
00:08Our Slater Shade panel is ready to go in on trending topics.
00:11We're getting you ready for beach season with swimsuits to fit every body type.
00:15Plus, it's the world premiere of Essence Festival performer Maxwell's new video.
00:20But right now, it's the hot list, the biggest stories you're buzzing about today.
00:24Bill Cosby will now stand trial for one of the many sexual assault cases against him.
00:31The case was brought forth by Temple University staffer Andrea Constand in 2004,
00:35but was reopened in 2015 after other women made similar claims against Cosby.
00:40And now, newly released court documents from the case show that Cosby admitted to drugging and giving alcohol to young women.
00:46If convicted, the comedian faces up to 10 years in prison and he would have to register as a sex offender.
00:54It's back! VH1 has announced the return of its hip-hop honors tributes,
00:58and the next one will put the spotlight on female MCs.
01:01Plus, this show will feature black women behind the camera.
01:04According to Shadow and Act, Queen Latifah's Flavor Unit and Mona Scott Young's Mona Me Entertainment teams
01:09will serve as executive producers.
01:11The show airs live on VH1 July 11th.
01:13Now, who do you want to see honored at this show?
01:16I'm putting my vote in right now for this one.
01:19It's my window. I can't stand up.
01:25It's my window. Beep, beep. Who got the keys?
01:32Now, Tay-Tay, what is going on?
01:37Friend of the show and friend in my head, Tamar Braxton first broke news to her fans
01:41that she would no longer be on her talk show, The Real, with this somewhat cryptic Instagram message.
01:47I love you all, but I have been stabbed in the back by someone I stupidly trusted.
01:51Not my man or my sisters, but as Tay-Martians, you are very smart and can figure things out on your own.
01:57Hmm. Then, The Real made a joint announcement saying the singer was leaving to pursue a solo career.
02:03Her co-hosts have all since professed their love for her online, but now, Tay-Mart's ex-assistant is popping off, too.
02:09At Mr. L. Davis tweeted,
02:11Tay-Mart gave so much to your show, didn't even properly promote her album because she was trapped on set all day.
02:18Then, y'all leak rumors that she's a diva and not liked by the viewers?
02:22Was Tay-Mart a diva before or after she had to provide her own wardrobe and shoes because the cheap-ass reel ain't have a budget?
02:30Ooh, now this is getting messy, honey.
02:33Did one of Tay-Mart's co-hosts stab her in the back?
02:35How was she fired when her husband, Vince, is an executive producer of the show?
02:39Facebook fam, get your comments ready because we're taking it on in Slater Shade next.
02:44It's Thursday, May 26th, and Essence Live starts now.

03:28All right, we got a whole lot happening today.
03:31It's time to get into Slade or Shade.
03:33Joining me today is Laura Stiles from Hot 97's Morning Show.
03:36Hi.
03:37And CNN and HLN contributor and founder of Swagger NYC, Mr. Sean Pierre Regis.
03:42Hello.
03:43Hello, my love.
03:44And last but certainly not least, here to just bring the ruckus, celebrity stylist, Lori Vice.
03:50Me.
03:51Clutch Pearls.
03:52How are you?
03:53I'm so happy to have all of you here.
03:55Happy to be here.
03:56And welcome, everyone.
03:57As I mentioned in today's Hot List, there's some major shadiness happening over at The Real with our girl, Tamar Braxton.
04:02Panelists, what are your thoughts of how it all went down?
04:05Does any part of Tamar's departure from The Real slay or nah?
04:09What say you, Slade or Shade, peeps?
04:12Ooh, this seems like a tough one.
04:14This one's a hard one.
04:15Uh-oh.
04:16I'm gonna start with you, Laura.
04:17Shade, pourquoi?
04:18The only reason I feel it's a little shady, but I know how the business works.
04:21Right.
04:22Because when you're in entertainment, it's like I've been part of this, too, where they do these perceptual studies where they actually take clips of you and they do these focus groups and people want to know if you're a likable person or not.
04:33You know what I mean?
04:34So it's like you take risks when you're very vocal about, you know, your opinions and, you know, the way you, whether it's the way you look, whatever.
04:41So you take a risk all the time whether people are gonna like you or not, right?
04:44But I feel like she's such, to me, she was one of my favorites.
04:48Right.
04:49And I really feel that the way they did it, they could have prepared her.
04:51And I think that Tamar could have found, like, a way to, like, position herself where it just didn't look super shady, you know?
04:57And then the way the other co-hosts came and they were like, you could tell everybody got caught off guard.
05:01Right.
05:02You know what I mean?
05:03So I think they always had, like, this family unit to them.
05:05So I felt like maybe if they would have prepared her a little bit.
05:07I mean, nobody likes to get fired, you know?
05:09True.
05:10But maybe if they would have prepared her a little bit, it could have gone a little smoother.
05:12A little smoother.
05:13Sean?
05:14Yeah.
05:15I mean, I slayed only because I know what happened was certainly shady.
05:21We know the industry.
05:22We've seen it time and time again with Kelly and Michael just recently.
05:26You know, this is a cutthroat business that Tamar has been a part of, not only in talk shows, but in music, too.
05:31And if there's one thing that I know about the Braxons, which is very little, honestly, just Tony, mostly, that may be shady.
05:39But it's that they know how to come back from the brinks, right?
05:44These Braxons have come back from the brinks.
05:45Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:46And so let this be an example to Tamar to pick up her stuff.
05:49And maybe she gets her own show online.
05:51Maybe she starts something else.
05:53But this isn't the end for her.
05:55Right at all.
05:56For any member of her family.
05:57So go and slay it and show these girls at The Real what's really real.
06:00Okay.
06:01Let them know.
06:02Let them know what's really, really real.
06:03Oh, I'm so nervous.
06:05Why I shade Warwick?
06:06Well, you know, usually when I'm here, I'm on the fence.
06:09So it's like, so it's shade.
06:10We came up with that.
06:11But I think it's shade on behalf of The Real, not Tamar.
06:15I think she's a great asset to the show.
06:17I just, her personality, either you love it or you hate it.
06:20Right.
06:21It's a 50-50.
06:22I think in this particular, for instance, her personality is definitely larger than life,
06:27but she balances out the table.
06:29And it's one of those things where, like you said, you could have just gave her a heads up.
06:33You know, I don't think it had to be as messy as it has become when now people are defending themselves.
06:39Lonnie Love just released her video giving her side of the story.
06:43It can feel that way.
06:44You know, a lot of times when we work in this industry, you end up working with your coworkers more than you do your own family.
06:50Like you're around people and you grow and develop attachments.
06:54And I think, even for me personally, like there's always a conversation that can be had before you put people on Front Street like that.
07:01I completely, completely agree.
07:02I think it was shady on their behalf.
07:03Okay.
07:04And Essie, you're just going to keep your shade card there.
07:06As I mentioned, we are broadcasting on Essence.com and Facebook right now.
07:10So let's see what the folks at home and at work are thinking.
07:12Well, we know some of y'all at work are just watching secretly.
07:14We have our correspondent Kayla joining us here in studio.
07:17Kayla, what are they slaying or shading on The Real out there in Facebook world?
07:21There is nothing but love and support for Tamar.
07:23Okay.
07:24So far, Jasmine Felix, I like Tamar on The Real.
07:27LaSheila Leonard, I love Tamar.
07:29There is some shade.
07:30Shelton Robinson, who cares?
07:32Yikes.
07:33There is one person, Shanita Blackburn.
07:35Well, the show is nothing without my girl.
07:37I will not be watching anymore.
07:39Oh.
07:40And I think there is going to be a lot of that as well.
07:42Like once you take out that energy and that pace, you know.
07:45Well, I am just curious to know what the executive producer table was like when her husband was
07:49sitting there and that decision was made.
07:51Okay.
07:52And how did he handle going home and not being able to discuss that?
07:57I know.
07:58Because as a Pisces, I know she is the type of person that would always want to be on
08:01top of their next move.
08:02Oh, definitely.
08:03I am curious to know how that went down.
08:04And before we move on to topic number two, I want to shout out Tish Lewis in Iowa watching.
08:08We love you out there in Facebook world.
08:10So moving right along.
08:11Breezy.
08:12It's no secret that Chris Brown and his baby mama, Nia Guzman, have their issues with one
08:16another.
08:17Earlier this week, the two were in court hashing out custody of their adorable two-year-old
08:20daughter, Royalty.
08:21And prior to their court hearing, Chris publicly slammed Nia for posting this picture of Royalty,
08:26posing in a black tutu and leg warmers for her dance class, which he said made her look
08:30more like a 16-year-old than two-year-old.
08:33All right.
08:34Since then, Nia has taken down the controversial post of baby Royalty, but not before she clapped
08:38back at Chris.
08:39Panelists, what are your thoughts on this story?
08:42Count of three.
08:43Uno, dos, tres.
08:44Shades.
08:45Oh, everybody's throwing shade.
08:46And Sean's shaking his head.
08:47I'm going to start with you.
08:48I mean, there's no upside to this.
08:49I mean, listen, this is a family that's in some sort of turmoil.
08:53Right.
08:54And, of course, you know, lovers, partners, baby mamas and baby daddies, like, they get
08:59to fights all the time.
09:00But, you know, Chris is in a really interesting position where he is forward-facing to the
09:04public.
09:05And I just think it is to the detriment of their daughter to do it so publicly.
09:09Right.
09:10I mean, she does not deserve this.
09:12She deserves better.
09:13And so this infighting that she will then see later on, because, as we know, what happens
09:18online stays online forever, why do that to her?
09:21And it just seems silly.
09:23It seems immature.
09:24And there's got to be a better way for both of them.
09:27They are adults who have a child, and they need to act like adults who have a child.
09:31You've got to do it with the presidential.
09:33One thing I will say, though, is that it's really good to see.
09:38I'm sorry.
09:39That's just jumping.
09:40It's okay.
09:41It's okay.
09:42It's okay.
09:43It's okay.
09:44It's okay.
09:45It's okay.
09:46It's interesting to see, because every time I have to report some news about Chris
09:49Brown, it's always him doing something.
09:50You know, it's always in the negative light.
09:51Mm-hm.
09:52So I think it's time for us to, you know, every time he's fighting for his child and
09:56it has these special moments with his baby girl, I think it's important to highlight
09:59that, too.
10:00I agree.
10:01Even when speaking to him, he's like, I just want to be a good father.
10:03Mm-hm.
10:04You know, and when I saw the picture, I'm not gonna lie to you, it felt a little weird,
10:07you know?
10:08I think it was, I think the angle?
10:09Yeah.
10:10It wasn't a good angle.
10:11There's something about it.
10:12Because you know what?
10:13Do you DM mom, though?
10:14Do you DM her and say, yo, take this down?
10:15No, you pick up the phone.
10:16Yes.
10:17Pick up the phone.
10:18Yeah.
10:19Yes.
10:20You don't hit her, right?
10:21That's what I was gonna tell you.
10:22That's what I was gonna tell you.
10:23I felt like he could've handled it a little bit differently.
10:24Right.
10:25Because there's enough attention going to the child.
10:26Leave it alone.
10:27Leave her alone.
10:28You guys can handle it like adults.
10:29Talk about it.
10:30Right.
10:31I'm pretty sure she would've been like, you know what?
10:32Okay, let me take this down.
10:33Right.
10:34Especially since she's going to court to try to get that coin.
10:36Worry.
10:37Well, that is exactly why I feel like she was actually shady in that situation.
10:41She made it public, so he just responded to what she put out there already.
10:46I mean, at the end of the day, looking at the picture, I don't think that's necessarily
10:50something that I would post of a two-year-old child.
10:53Right.
10:54I don't even know that I would ask a child to pose like that.
10:55Like, where does she get that from?
10:56Yeah.
10:57Right.
10:58That is true.
10:59There's something about the pose.
11:00The pose itself is like, we've seen Northwest in a tutu and Penelope in a tutu a thousand
11:04times coming from balladina class.
11:06Right.
11:07We've never had an issue with it.
11:08I don't think it's anything about what she's wearing.
11:10I think it's how it's situated.
11:12And in this day and age where you've got grown women doing things like this, it's like,
11:17well, what is the message that you're sending?
11:19Right.
11:20And obviously her father has had enough experience in this field to know, like, don't put my daughter
11:25out there promoting it.
11:26Right.
11:27I'm going to let people know that I am checking you because I'm ridiculed for everything else.
11:31I'm going to just go ahead and show you that I actually am a good dad.
11:34Right.
11:35Like, if I don't say anything, he's one of those people, like, he's damned if he does these.
11:38He's damned if he doesn't.
11:40Kayla, what's our Facebook saying out there?
11:42I know they have some thoughts on Chris Brown.
11:44Very opinionated.
11:45Shelly says, it's the pose that made it look bad.
11:47Jasmine says, the mom didn't need to post the pic.
11:50Jasmine Felix, the mom did not need to post the pic of her two-year-old on social media.
11:54I agree with Chris.
11:55Okay.
11:56And, you know, that's a really good point, Laura.
11:57We always are pointing our fingers at what people do wrong, whether it's Chris or any
12:00other celebrity.
12:01But, you know, if you're trying to do something right, we should give them the same praise.
12:05Absolutely.
12:06All right, our third and final topic is a doozy, honey.
12:09Kris Jenner wants that old thing back.
12:11I love saying that.
12:13Not her ex-husband, Bruce Jenner, who is now Caitlyn.
12:16We're talking about the Kardashian last name.
12:19In a deleted scene of this family's reality show, Kris reveals to Khloe she's changing her
12:24last name back to Kardashian, despite the fact that she's been divorced from the late Robert
12:28Kardashian for over 20 years.
12:30Even Khloe found it bizarre and suggested that she should go back to her maiden name, which
12:34the mom-ajur responded, if Bruce can change his name to Caitlyn, I think I'm good.
12:39Okay, Kris Kardashian.
12:41Panelists, what say you Slade or Shade?
12:44Ooh.
12:45We all agree on this.
12:46Shade, Shade, Shade, Shade, Shade.
12:47It was Shade with a sigh, like...
12:49Worry, I'll let you start off.
12:51Pourquoi?
12:52Why Shade?
12:54You know...
12:56You know how I feel about these kids.
12:58Uh-huh.
12:59Like...
13:01Take your time.
13:02The Kardashian-Jenner situation, there's always something with these girls.
13:05Like, there's always something to make a moment become a moment to be a moment so we can have
13:09a moment.
13:10So now, if we're losing any momentum, like, what's the most, you know...
13:14The next moment.
13:15The next moment and the most shock value that we can give.
13:18Now I want to go back to being a Kardashian because that's what's hot.
13:21Right.
13:22Right.
13:23And I think in the case of like a Blac Chyna type of situation, she beat the girls to the
13:28punch.
13:29Mm-hmm.
13:30You know what I mean?
13:31It's like, at this point, I will be one of you.
13:33I'm doing something that you can do, you can't do.
13:35Mm-hmm.
13:36Which is, my baby will be a Kardashian.
13:37Mm-hmm.
13:38Yours are not.
13:39Mm-hmm.
13:40You know what I mean?
13:41And so it's like, I think mom wants to have a piece of that too, because ultimately,
13:43you know, that's what made the family famous.
13:45That's the empire.
13:46Mm-hmm.
13:47It's the Kardashian name.
13:48Sean, what are your thoughts?
13:49They should probably give Ray J some flowers.
13:50Well...
13:51I'm just saying.
13:52Sean, you're saying.
13:53He's a part of it.
13:54For me, I mean, I think, listen, like, I think it's just, to your point, a ploy to
14:01keep her in the news.
14:02Mm-hmm.
14:03Let's be honest.
14:04Everybody knows who Kris Jenner is.
14:05Right.
14:06She's arguably more powerful than all of them because she made them in a lot of ways.
14:10Great.
14:11And she gave the example of calling a restaurant and saying that Kris Kardashian does better
14:15than Kris Jenner.
14:16But let's be honest, I would be confused if you told me that Kris Kardashian was coming,
14:20because I don't know a Kris Kardashian.
14:21I only know a Kris Jenner.
14:22Right.
14:23I think it was a phony.
14:24Yeah, so I think that it's just a ploy for her to continue the conversation.
14:27And come on, guys, let's be really real.
14:30Again, who cares?
14:32It's her name.
14:33Like, I don't care.
14:34Why is this news?
14:35Why is this trending about Kris Jenner changing her name?
14:38Right.
14:39It does not matter.
14:41So stop trying to make a moment matter when it doesn't matter.
14:44Hashtag all lives matter.
14:46Laura, can I tell you something?
14:47The final word on this, honey.
14:48I just feel I agree with everything.
14:49You took the words right out of my mouth, because everything you said is how I felt, too.
14:52But we continue to talk about it.
14:54Yes, I know.
14:55That's why it's trending.
14:56Yes.
14:57You have to remember that...
14:58Is it because it's word vomit and we can't help it?
14:59Yes!
15:00I mean, the Kardashians, the genders are constantly shoved down our throats.
15:02And whether we like it or not, whether it's in a positive light or a negative light, we continue.
15:07We make them trends.
15:08Right.
15:09We make them popular.
15:10We play those video games.
15:11Well, I don't, but you know what I mean?
15:12Right, right.
15:13Like, to me, it drives me nuts when I hear little girls freaking out about Kylie Jenner.
15:17Yeah.
15:18Like, I want to be a Kylie Jenner.
15:19What does Kylie Jenner do?
15:20I don't even know what she does.
15:21Nobody knows.
15:22We don't know, but we make them famous.
15:23But, you know, back to the topic of the name, I think it's like, I don't know a Kris Kardashian.
15:28I know a Kris Jenner.
15:29Yes.
15:30And who cares?
15:31Right, right.
15:32And to me, I started thinking about Kylie and Kendall.
15:35Because if I were them, I would be a little, I would feel a certain type of way if my mom all of a sudden wanted to, you know, get rid of Kris Jenner's name.
15:40And you don't want to be a Jenner, so what does that mean?
15:41Right.
15:42For my other sisters.
15:43That sort of trans shade was like, I felt a little bit disgusting and low class, honestly.
15:48I mean, how dare you say your, Bruce changed his name or whatever.
15:53Like, it's so much bigger than that.
15:55Right.
15:56And it totally devalued that cultural moment.
15:58I mean, it was disgusting.
16:00Well, I guess it's the same as the two girls changing themselves into Kardashians without changing their names.
16:05And that was more shade.
16:07Kayla, what do you have on Facebook over there?
16:09I know our audience has a lot to say about the Kardashians.
16:11Oh, my gosh.
16:12Shade left and right.
16:13Melanie Hazleton, shade detected.
16:15Dorothea, Thea, she should change her name back.
16:18Khloe should change her name to Simpson.
16:21Who?
16:22I don't even know what else to say about that.
16:23Let's see.
16:24You should have sipped some tea, honey.
16:25Okay.
16:26I want to thank all of you so much for joining us in studio.
16:27Sean's face is rising.
16:28Don't go anywhere.
16:29We have Evelyn Lizotta in studio next, and she's taking our questions.
16:31Plus, later in the show, we've got a world premiere of Maxwell's new video.
16:35But first, Trina, Tracy, and Tawanda Braxton dish on what we can expect from the new season of their hit reality show.
16:42Oh, I'm sorry.
16:43Girl.
16:44I've learned never to wear my hair blonde and look like Ursula and wear purple at the same time.
16:48Okay, that's one thing that Tracy has learned not to do ever again.
16:50I've learned never to wear my hair blonde and look like Ursula and wear purple at the same time.
16:53Okay, that's one thing that Tracy has learned not to do ever again on Braxton's End of the Night.
17:07The show has been so awesome.
17:09It's been just a blessing for all of us because we've been able to use this as a platform for other things that we're trying to do.
17:15Of course, everybody knew us as Braxton's as a singing family, but now we're, I guess, diving into different endeavors.
17:21Like Tracy is on a radio show.
17:24Tracy's doing Sirius FM.
17:25XM.
17:26Yes.
17:27The Heat with Dion.
17:28We're excited about that.
17:29Trina just opened up her bar.
17:30Bar Chicks.
17:31Bar Chicks.
17:32And it's delicious.
17:33I'm going to tell you that.
17:34I have a cocktail in a plate every time I go.
17:36Yes, you guys.
17:37It's delicious.
17:38And, of course, I have my hairline.
17:39You can go to TawandaBraxton.com and get my hair and I'm acting.
17:43We're doing a lot of different things.
17:44So, we're really excited.
17:46We're thankful and blessed.
17:47Definitely.
17:48We're booked.
17:49I'm just joking.
17:52Words to describe R&B songs.
17:54Autobiographical.
17:55I want to love you right now.
17:57I want to love you.
17:58Chilling.
17:59Warm.
18:00So, bring your body close to me.
18:02And I want to love you.
18:03I want to love you right now.
18:04I want to love you right now.
18:05Instigating.
18:06All of those things together.
18:07That's the instigation part.
18:09Come to me.
18:10Come to me.
18:11I want to love you right now.
18:12I want to love you right now.
18:14Am I really supposed to be giving y'all all of this right now?
18:17So, bring your body close to me.
18:18I've got to leave a little bit of mystery.
18:19I want to love you.
18:20I want to love you right now.
18:22Come to me.
18:23Come to me.
18:24I want to love you right now.
18:25I want to love you right now.
18:26I want to love you right now.
18:27I want to love you right now.
18:28I want to love you right now.
18:29I want to love you right now.
18:30I want to love you right now.
18:31I want to love you right now.
18:32me. Hey family, I'm Andra Day and you're watching Essence Live. You're watching Essence Live,
18:52Essence Magazine's premier digital talk show. I'm your host, Dana Blair, and joining me now
18:56is a woman who was first introduced to us as a basketball wife, but today she is living
19:01Lozada on OWN. Please welcome Evelyn Lozada to the show. Hi. How are you? I'm fabulous.
19:06How are you? I'm good. I'm good. This is your first time here to Essence Live. Welcome. It
19:10is. Thank you. You guys have a beautiful studio. Thank you. I enjoy the pillows. Yes. So I
19:15just want to jump right into it. Tell us about the new season of Living Lozada on OWN. The
19:19new season of Living Lozada obviously follows my family, me, my daughter, me being a mom
19:26after 20 plus years. I open up about some really personal issues, you know, my fertility
19:32issues. So with last episode, I ended up having a miscarriage on Thanksgiving. So, you know,
19:39I was very open to discussing these things because I know that so many women don't talk
19:45about it. Right. So many women take blame. So, yeah, and just Shanice. You'll see Shanice
19:51on there a lot. Obviously, like my co-star and her struggles with modeling and everything
19:54that she's going through. Was it difficult for you to make that decision to be so open
19:58considering you've received a lot of criticism in the past? Was it difficult for you to say,
20:02you know what, I'm going to show that vulnerable side on this platform? You know, I feel like
20:07even with Basketball Wives, like even though it wasn't the most positive side of me that
20:11you were seeing, that was still a vulnerable side of me that people were seeing because
20:15I was obviously clearly dealing with a bunch of things on the forefront of the show. Yeah,
20:22I mean, there was a lot going on behind closed doors. But I feel like that's why reality TV
20:28has worked for me because I show every side of me. So, you know, I would say it's real and
20:34I'm happy just to be able to do it differently, you know, and just to be able to do it a little
20:38more positive. Was there one particular moment that made you say, okay, from your, the side of
20:45you we saw on Basketball Wives to present where you're like, you know what, I'm going to make a
20:47change. Was there something that happened that made you make that actual switch to live in a different
20:52light, if you will? Probably when I met Iyanla and I was going through my personal issues and my
20:58previous relationship definitely opened up my eyes to a lot of things and a lot of things that I
21:04didn't want in my life. And I took off some time from reality TV, like two years. And I was like,
21:10I want to change this. Like there was so much negativity and I focused on my personal life
21:16myself. I ended up having my son. Who was adorable, by the way. Thank you. I miss him so much being here.
21:22But yeah, so I just wanted to just focus on like my personal life and my family. And, you know,
21:28as you mentioned flipping a negative into a positive, you have also become an advocate for
21:33domestic violence and really putting that out there. And you also helped someone on the show
21:37this season. Can you tell us a little bit about that? So with last season, I was open, you know,
21:43I would say, look, this is not about the person. Like this is about me and the things that I dealt
21:48with during that relationship. And so this woman watched the show when she put a comment on my
21:53Instagram page and she was talking about how I inspired her. And thank you so much, you know,
21:57for talking about the domestic violence. And she was a domestic violence survivor. And then she starts
22:02talking about how her ex gouged the back of her teeth out. So I took a screenshot of that message
22:09because it just, it just stuck with me. That's why I'm a crybaby. Like, I'm like, I've lived it. I
22:14know it. I know what she's been through. So I was like, what can I do for her? Right. So I had her
22:19come on the show. I ended up talking to my dentist and he totally agreed. We had surprised her and we had
22:26all of her teeth fixed. Um, so that was great for me. And like I told her, I said, I'm not trying to
22:32exploit your story. This is not about your abuser. This is really about you. And I want to make you
22:36feel good about yourself. And so of course we had a crying moment and it was great, but I was just
22:41really happy to be able to do that for her. No, I, that I saw, I saw that clip and that really
22:46touched me as well. Um, are you ready to take some questions from our Facebook live? Sure.
22:50Of course. All right. We have Kayla, our correspondent in the studio. Kayla, what questions do we have
22:55up first? Well, everyone is just so excited that you're here. So everyone just wants to
22:58give you a shout out. Oh, Dorita working on me. Everyone just wants to say, Hey girl. Uh, Jasmine.
23:04Hey girl. I always liked Evelyn, although I didn't always admire her behavior on Basketball Wives.
23:09Cheryl Riggins says she loves you. And Carol Joyce says she loves your shoes, Dana. Oh, thank you.
23:15Thank you my shoes with my little, my Melody Asani Prince tag on there. Shout out to Melody
23:20Asani out there in LA. You know, I want to ask you about Basketball Wives. Your, your quote,
23:24you made about this life. Yes. We often get asked on our relationship columns here on essence.com about
23:30dating athletes and things of that nature. Do you have any, um, insight? Is it as glamorous as it appears
23:36to be? No, I think people think that it's just perfect because you're living a certain lifestyle,
23:42but it's, I mean, you have your moments. It depends on the person too. You know, it's like,
23:47I'm with an athlete now and we have a great relationship. So I sleep peaceful at night.
23:52I don't worry about every anything. And the only real difficult part about that is just that he
23:57works a lot. Right. Um, he's on the road every other week. So that's the most difficult part,
24:02but I guess it really just depends on the relationship. Right. Right. And on the individual,
24:05you have to treat like an individual basis. Yeah. And I'm glad that I didn't judge
24:09him based off of other things that I dealt with. And I went to it with an open mind,
24:14no baggage. You know, this is a totally different person and, um, it worked out and you know,
24:20we have a good thing. That's very big of you. Cause I'd have been like this.
24:22All right. I know. And I know I'm pretty good about just letting that go and not being judgy and not,
24:34you know, that's big. Yeah. That's, that's growth. That's what it's all about. You gotta leave that
24:37baggage behind. Let that go. Yeah. In the words of Erykah Badu Bagley, you gotta let that go. You
24:42really do. Kayla, do you have a question for us from the Facebook fam out there? Comment from
24:46Deanne Robinson. It's sure good to see and hear Ms. Lozada Glasser. Her life is going in the direction
24:51she wants it to go. She's always been a positive woman and I can relate to her. Oh, that's nice.
24:56Awesome. I will say, look, since basketball wives, the messages that I get now and tweets
25:03and Instagram messages have been so positive. So it just really goes to show how things have
25:07shifted. Cause before my timeline would be like, girl, you did, you did. You know, I can't,
25:14and I get it now, but like, it feels so good that it's like, it's, it's different and it's just more
25:19positive. I mean, you may have one fool that wants to say. There's always one. Yeah. Always one.
25:23But I just hit the block button and that's what I do. I don't respond anymore. And that's a
25:29testament to you though, and your energy and being able to change and inspire. So catch yourself on
25:34the back as well. Thank you. Thank you so much for joining us here on Essence Live. And you can
25:38watch Live in Lozada Saturday nights at 9 PM Eastern on OWN. Coming up, we've got swimsuits that
25:43will love you no matter what your body type. They'll be perfect. Everyone will look fierce on the beach.
25:47That world premiere of Maxwell's new video is also coming up. But right now, Neighbors 2 star Kiersey
25:53Clemens reveals her hair story and the one style she will never do again.
25:58The worst thing that can happen to me is to get a bad weave. I reminded myself of a man with a toupee on
26:04and I was just like, what is this? Like, why did I do that to myself?
26:14I always wanted to cut my hair because I've just always had such big hair. So I was born and one day I
26:20started getting weaves and I would just go crazy with colors. Purple hair, red hair, teal twists,
26:25jumbo braids. And then I grew my hair. I went this phase of like wanting to be like Erykah Badu.
26:31And once it got to a really big state, I was like, cool, now we're gonna chop it off. So then I shaved
26:35the sides for dope. And then I made it blonde and give it out a little bit. And now we're back.
26:45The end of last year, I had a weave in a really long time. And I was like, oh,
26:49I want to go back to weave life. And so I got one really quickly. But like, I don't know,
26:53I got really too confident with it and was like, I want to do like a side part thing like here.
26:58And like, my hair was too short though. I haven't straightened my hair a long time,
27:01so it wasn't trained. It wasn't blending. The worst thing that can happen to me is to get a bad weave.
27:09I reminded myself of a man with a toupee on. And I was just like, what is this? Like,
27:14why did I do that to myself? I looked like a 40 year old man with a weave. It was so bad.
27:19I went through the whole thing of like, not being proud of who you are and my hair,
27:28like being curly and really coarse. And I was like, oh, not all guys like that. Like,
27:32I want long, flowy hair. But now I really don't really give . And I think guys think my
27:41short haircut is cool. At least the ones that like me. And they the only ones that matter.
27:46Cutting it is literally one of the best things that's ever happened to me is cutting my hair.
27:51And I would have grown this attachment. It's such a silly thing. I feel like sometimes we rely on our
27:55hair to like flip it and like, I'm being sexy and I'm being so cute. It's like, but you're already
27:59that in yourself. So that was cheesy, but I liked it.
28:02Grab some contact solution. Okay. Take at least two to three drops inside of your mascara and work
28:17up all those clumps and voila, fresh mascara. Awesome. Awesome. Welcome back to Essence Live.
28:23I'm your host, Dana Blair. That was our very own makeup artist, Tara Lauren, demonstrating some quick
28:27beauty hacks. If you missed it, you can watch the full segment on Essence.com under the video section
28:32or on our YouTube channel. All right. Speaking of looking fabulous, swimsuit season is here, honey.
28:38And if you're headed to the beach for Memorial Day weekend and need a bathing suit that will cover
28:41your problem areas while you can still stun on them, we got you. And here to help me is fashion
28:46stylist extraordinaire, Miss Rosie Philidor. Hi. Hi. I love everything you're giving me. Thank you,
28:51honey. I love your white shoes. Thank you. Thank you. A little prints. A little pop to match my tan,
28:56you know. So before we get started, do you have a quick tip that any woman can apply when you're
29:02trying to shop for a swimsuit this season? I would say just know your body type and try on as many as
29:08possible until you figure out the one that makes you feel the most confident and just go for it.
29:14Okay. So we're going to check out some swimsuits now. First up, we have Carinthia. And I want to point
29:20out before we get started that all of the swimsuits we're going to see today are by black owned
29:24businesses. All right. Black businesses matter. So first up is Carinthia. She wanted something to
29:29accentuate her small bust and disguise her tummy, which is a pretty common issue. So let's see what
29:34she looks like before. Hi, Carinthia. All right. And here is Carinthia now. Yes. Okay, color.
29:42Fabulous. Those sunnies are everything. Okay. So tell me about this look. The swimsuit is by
29:46Nakamuli. And it's an Aztec print, which camouflages her stomach area. So that way,
29:52you're focused on the print and the vibrant of the colors in the swimsuit. And she just looks
29:57fabulous wearing it. She feels confident. The sunglasses by Beauty and the Beach. I love them.
30:02The beauty and the tortoise shell kind of, you know, motif that it has is fabulous. And I love the
30:09high waisted. Lovely bracelet. That's in right now, right? Yeah. The high waisted. It works for every
30:14shape, every silhouette. The bracelets are fabulous. She's pulling it all together. I love that. And I
30:19like the fringe on the top. And the bracelets are by Double High Five Brooklyn. Double High Five Brooklyn.
30:23I like that. The fringe makes me feel like you got a little something for the girls. Yes. I love this look.
30:29Thank you so much, Carinthia. Thank you, Carinthia. All right. Next up, we have Shanary.
30:34She says her problem areas are her thighs. Let's see what she looked like before.
30:40That's Shanary. And here is Shanary now. Giving me con-realness. I love it. This is fabulous. Tell
30:46me about this look. It's by Rue 107. It's a sheer cover-up wrap dress, which looks really sexy. And at
30:54the same time, the top is by Simone. Okay. Bottom is by Constance. The tote is by Sonoma. Hello.
31:02Fabulous. She's ready. Hello. She wants everybody to see that she's coming onto the beach. And I like
31:05that the wrap is a very light material. Yes. So it doesn't feel heavy. Very sheer. Yeah. And black is
31:11very sheer. You look at me. It's okay. We see you, Shanary. All right. Thank you so much, Shanary.
31:16Now, while voluptuous women are often in demand in our community, our next model, Breon, wrote to us
31:21with a problem that a lot of ladies can relate to. No curves. Here's Breon in her own swimsuit. This is the
31:27before serving abs. Yes. And here's Breon now. Oh, I love the color of the swimsuit. That blue,
31:35that blue is everything. It's in the season. She is wearing it. The cutouts are beautiful. It makes
31:41her look long and lean, but still curvy. Right. And the sunglasses are fabulous. They're by Nico.
31:49I feel like everybody needs a good sunglasses this season. Like, just spend the time and get them.
31:53Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. And who's the swimsuit by? The swimsuit is by Andrea Liyama. I love this.
31:59The cutouts are everything. The blue is fabulous on her skin tone with the gold piping. It just looks
32:06amazing. And who's the bag by? It's by Coco Loves Rome. Beautiful stripes. It has a nautical feel.
32:14Fabulous. So you can pick up a Sailor Boo. Yes. And the sandals are by DV, Dolce Vita. I love those.
32:20Thank you so much, Breon. You see, I'm focused on picking up the booze at the beach. I'm a fan.
32:25All right. We have one less problem area that needs fixing. Julia says she suffers from the dreaded
32:30love handles big stomach combo. Swimsuits are definitely not forgiving for those areas. So here's
32:35Julia's look before. Hi, Julia. Hi, Julia. All right. You better come through with a color. Yes,
32:42with the color blocking. I absolutely love this swimsuit. I feel like it's flattering of so many body types.
32:47It's by Nakimuli. It's beautiful. It's very 80s style. It's color blocked. So it camouflages
32:54everything because your eyes are on the colors. And it's just the shape, the halter neck,
32:59the wrap is just, it's so flattering. And she looks amazing. She looks confident. She is just working
33:05it. Who are the accessories by? Target necklace. Yes. Okay. Target necklace. And the bracelets?
33:10Double High Five Brooklyn. The bracelets are by. And the sandals are everything. I feel like you can never
33:15have too much color. Yeah. The sandals are by Latigo. Very pretty, nude, with a pop of color.
33:21Love the stones. She looks absolutely stunning. Thank you so much, Julia. And can we have all of
33:25the models come back and join us so we can see all of these fabulous looks. Yes. I'm ready to go to
33:31the beach, honey. Beautiful. You ladies look absolutely stunning. Thank you so very, very much,
33:38Rosie, for coming. Absolutely. You have to come back. Thank you for having me. I would love to come
33:41back. Getting me and my tan all the way right. Yes. These are definitely helpful. And thank you
33:45again to all of our fabulous models. Facebook fam, what say you? Do you like these swimsuits?
33:49Or not really? Keep leaving your comments and we'll check back in with you a little bit later on in the
33:53show. And don't go anywhere because our Black Girl Magic Moment of the Week and the world premiere of
33:58Maxwell's new video, Lake by the Ocean, are coming up. You do not want to miss that. Right now, Food
34:03Network's Eddie Jackson breaks down what you should and shouldn't do at the barbecue this Memorial Day.
34:11Hi, I'm Eddie Jackson, co-host of Kids Barbecue Championship on Food Network,
34:15and these are my barbecue do's and don'ts. Do bring your new boo to the cookout if
34:22you want her to get talked about. If they don't know that person, they're going to talk about it.
34:25Oh, Lord, look at that. Why she come out here with that on? Look at her. No, she's not looking.
34:29That's how family is. Do have people bring dishes, a potluck, but only the people that you know can
34:35cook. Do not, under any circumstances, get somebody to bring potato salad when you know
34:40they cannot make potato salad. I have a very nice way to tell them not to do it. Don't bring that damn
34:44potato salad. It is a definite do not let your man man the grill if he's terrible. Why subject him to
34:54people talking behind his back? So go ahead and, you know, hey, baby, you know what? Let's do this
34:59together today. You know what? Let me help you be great. Do not get upset nor say anything when the
35:07pastor is blessing the food. My pastor literally blessed every plate, every person, every ingredient
35:15on the table. Dear Heavenly Father, I want to thank you for each and every salt grain, seeds,
35:23fingers. Big Mama, she slaved over this food. The grains that fed the chicken of this fried chicken
35:29that's on this table. I want to thank you for it. Amen. I'm Eddie Jackson, co-host of Kids Barbecue
35:34Championship on Food Network, and these were my barbecue do's and don'ts. So let us know what your do's and
35:40don'ts are and leave them down in the comments. You're watching Essence Live. I'm your host,
35:45Ada Blair. Um, did you know Maxwell is performing at this year's Essence Festival? You better go get
35:51those tickets. And if you're watching us on Facebook, let us know in the comments section
35:54what song you most want to hear from him at this year's festival performance. But now here it is,
35:59the world premiere of Maxwell's latest video, Lake by the Ocean.
36:03Welcome back.
36:21.
36:28.
36:31I wanted you to have clean water.
36:59I brought you a pamphlet to explain what we want to do and what we want to bring to the village.
37:29Thank you everyone.
37:31Are you happy?
37:33It's going to happen.
37:36Women like men, we are happy.
37:39We are happy.
37:40It's going to happen.
37:42It's going to happen.
37:44We are happy.
37:47We are happy.
37:50We're happy to hear our trip.
37:52We are happy with you today.
37:54We are happy that we are happy here.
37:56I'm going to sing this song.
38:00Thank you very much for all of you coming.
38:07I'm going to sing this song.
38:10I'm going to sing this song.
38:12Thank you very much for all of you coming.
38:26He, he, he, he, he, he, yeah, yeah, yeah.
38:35In the light of the sun, I was dazed, I was burned, I was lost.
38:41Deep in the storm of a grave, had a bed as a coffin.
38:47You were only the one that made me fulfilled.
38:51Only the thing that made me reveal.
38:54My destiny was before us, the beach of a forest.
38:58Anything ain't nothing, it's just, it's just.
39:03You, just us, nobody but.
39:07Love on, trust on us, nobody but.
39:14Then we swim a lake by the ocean.
39:20We'll be one like drops in slow motion.
39:27He, he, he, he, he, he.
39:31The lake by the ocean.
39:35Oh, tell me the way that it is.
39:38The waves like it is.
39:40The traps cause.
39:42Why do I live inside of you, baby?
39:45I want to be every part of you.
39:48And it's just, it's just right.
39:51It's just like we can be strong.
39:54We can wait, we can live for so long.
39:58Live in a flame where we'll never burn.
40:01No one could ever, ever return.
40:03You are the reason I'm on you, reason I love you.
40:08You're the thing I need, cause it's just, it's just.
40:13You, just us, nobody but.
40:18Love on, trust on us, nobody but.
40:24We'll be one like drops in slow motion.
40:38He, he, he, he, he.

42:39Melissa says she loves the high-waist bikini.
42:41Dorita said that black sheer cover-up is fleeking.
42:44And she also said, don't bring potato salad. It's hot outside.

42:52Oh, it'll go bad.
42:53No. You'll figure it out. Potato salad is essential.
42:57However, I do have the tea on the sheer black cover-up
43:00because so many of you out there were talking about it.
43:02The sheer black swimsuit and cover-up are from Rue 107.
43:06It's the Simone bikini top and the Constance bottom.
