00:00what made you want to be a part of this film I read this script and I you know I
00:08knew Mickey Howard's music right but I did not know the story of her life and
00:11reading this script there is so much that she has gone through I mean you
00:16have from spousal abuse mental abuse drug abuse you have extreme highs when
00:24she was at the height of her career and then you have these extreme lows and
00:27it's it's really her life is everything a movie is made of and we have so much
00:32in this film and we cover from her being 15 and kicked out and homeless all the
00:37way to mid 30s late 30s and that that doesn't even scratch the surface but
00:43there is so much there did you get a chance to meet with Mickey beforehand oh
00:48this whole process happened really quickly so I got the script and we I had
00:55maybe two weeks two and a half weeks before we actually started oh wow yeah
01:01yeah so I had a crash course of Mickey Howard love she is such an amazing person
01:07first of all we all know her talent right just beyond and but as a human being
01:13she's so loving she's so lovable and just really getting to know her since there
01:18wasn't much time I I had to make sure I at least captured her essence right um
01:24no pun intended yeah no pun intended we'll take it yes um so that was really my goal um
01:30and and she was so open and she gave me it was a little you never know how someone is going to react right
01:37especially what we had to do uh reliving those moments and I um I was so grateful that she really gave me the permission to go there she said go go first
01:48that you can do it and not be embarrassed or feel guilty that I'm making her relive this
01:54um it's a story she wants told it's a story that I want to share because it's
01:59really a story of redemption and perseverance through went through the
02:03hard times and she doesn't fall once or twice and not even fall but she she has
02:08to pick herself up and figure out who she is multiple times and I think it's
02:12really gonna inspire people that's it I can't wait to see that because sometimes we
02:17get so stuck in the in the valleys if you will that we don't really even you
02:20know right we don't try to get back to the peak if you right I love seeing those
02:24story arches now there's been quite a few remakes of singers from uh
02:28Whitney Houston to Toni Braxton Aaliyah and they received some pretty harsh
02:32criticisms were you nervous about taking on a prod this type of project um
02:38first of all I I enjoyed some of those films um I the I'm always nervous taking
02:46on any project and then the fact that this woman is still alive and she's going
02:52to watch and very she's going to judge what I do it doesn't even matter what
02:58anyone else does or says this is her life and she's there on set watching and a
03:04part right right but she wasn't that person and that's what made it so much
03:09easier to um really just dive in and go for it um but so yeah of course I was
03:15nervous and like oh and then just the material itself I want to do a thorough
03:22job telling this story this woman's story but a story that's so necessary to
03:27share I think it's gonna help people heal I think it's gonna bring up a lot of
03:30topics that we as a community sometimes right won't talk about um so I I it's
03:39the it's kind of that same feeling I felt with Chirac where people are gonna have
03:44very strong opinions about what we're doing and what we're saying but at the
03:47heart of it I know that there are people who need to hear this and who would
03:52benefit from hearing it and who will actually be healed from it
