KeKe Palmer talks about speaking feeling objectified.
Transcript
00:00You and Trey Songz, lots of buzz there.
00:06Can you tell us about what happened and why you've decided to take legal action?
00:09Well, my feelings about that have pretty much resolved, you know, definitely in private matters.
00:15And how I feel about it is just I don't want that specific situation to overshadow my reasons for speaking out.
00:21My reasons for speaking out, you know, of course, definitely we're about that specific situation.
00:24But more so in totality of the fact that as women, we have to say no when things that are normalized don't feel good.
00:30Can you tell us a little bit more then about what happened, the situation?
00:33When you talk about normalizing the situation, are you able to go a little bit more together?
00:35I don't want to be so specific in the details, but I will say that it was an objectifying situation.
00:40Whereas a female, I felt like I was being objectified.
00:43And women go through it all the time.
00:45You're going through work.
00:46People make comments about you as your sexual...
00:48You're showing up thinking it's one particular situation.
00:50It's something else.
00:50Exactly.
00:51Give it a little bit more context of the story here.
00:52Exactly.
00:52Yes, pretty much saying what we all go through as women, wherever we are, in any situation,
00:57where we might come up against someone, a male person, where they're pretty much making us feel less than because we're female.
01:04So you were at an expectation that it was a social event and it ended up being more of like a professional music video type of situation.
01:09Yeah, which is a whole other thing in itself.
01:11Which is a different situation.
01:11Aside, it's actually both two different situations as opposed to one not being professional.
01:15One, A, not being professional, and B, you know, the misogyny that is seen as normal in our world.
01:22And so my reasons for speaking out, it's like, it's bigger than that person.
01:25It's bigger than that one situation.
01:27It's more so about we have to say, yo, this stuff ain't cool.
01:31No, it's not cool to misuse and abuse my brand without my permission.
01:36And no, it's not cool to the tactics in which we take as male and female to get what we want.
01:42I know that your audience has felt a certain way, but have your peers made any comments in regards to it?
01:46Oh, people definitely feel different ways.
01:48I mean, because, you know, I mean, it isn't like that isn't someone that people know.
01:53And at the end of the day, it's not like, I hate you forever.
01:55It's not, this ain't that.
01:56No, no, no, no.
01:56Yeah, yeah.
01:57It's not that kind of situation.
01:58It's not that.
01:58It's more so I'm taking my stance on what I feel.
