00:00I broke into the wrong house.
00:04When I started reading the script, I was sort of waiting for the moment, and it never came.
00:09I was waiting for her to fall at an inopportune time, or her to not use common sense,
00:14or somebody comes and saves her.
00:17And by the time I got to the end, I was like,
00:19oh, she uses common sense, all of her resources, everything at her disposal,
00:22and she gets to be the hero at the end of the day,
00:25and she empowers her kids to save themselves as well.
00:28You had me at hello.
00:30Because I do that every day.
00:34You know what I mean?
00:35And I'm surrounded by other women who are superheroes in their everyday life
00:38and do heroic things every day.
00:40I just have never seen it on the screen or on paper.
00:45And I certainly have never been offered anything like that.
00:48And that usually kind of only exists in the DC or the Marvel world.
00:51So it was nice to see women, a mom, on what should be an ordinary day,
00:57capable of extraordinary things when her back is to the wall.
01:04I was raised by one of the strongest, most intelligent, resourceful women I've ever come across.
01:11My mom, you know, raised three daughters, and at 60, adopted three more.
01:17So at 71, she's trying to learn how to use emojis and slide in DMs and, you know, stay current.
01:24As a senior citizen, you know, when most people are ready to, you know, relax and sit on the porch and be big mama,
01:31my mama is like, no, I'm still mama.
01:33And she figures it out.
01:35And she still doesn't have all the resources that she needs to be a 71-year-old parent of three.
01:41But she figures it out.
01:43And she does heroic things every day.
01:44And she's a fierce advocate for her kids.
01:47And she's a fierce protector of her children.
01:50So I got it from my mama.
01:56You know, my mom wasn't a physical person.
01:58She wasn't necessarily athletic.
02:01I got my love of books and logic and reason from my mom.
02:06But not the sports gene.
02:09My mom was more of, let's go spend a Sunday listening to Nikki Giovanni read poetry at the Oakland Children's Museum.
02:16Not like my dad, where he was like, let's go out on the court or, you know, let's get out on that field and do some push-ups and sprints.
02:24She would have figured it out, though.
02:26She's one of those people.
02:27She's just very resourceful.
02:29She would have figured it out some kind of way.
02:31I do recall there was a time when I was a teenager where I thought that we all have that moment where we think we can challenge our parents.
02:39Where we think we're that, excuse me, that bitch.
02:42And my mom says something.
02:44And I said, what?
02:45And I kind of, kind of ish, maybe got a little in her face.
02:50Like, and what, what, what?
02:53And so I do know she is capable of violence.
02:57More on the production schedule of it all.
03:08We were, we were filming actually at Malibu Wine Safari.
03:12So, but it was doubling for Wisconsin and Chicago.
03:17So on wide shots, you could see the giraffe and the zebras and the camels, which were not in the script.
03:25So we had to get very creative to get the wildlife out of the shots.
03:32So that was a thing.
03:33And then because it was a very, it's a very popular wedding venue, we could only shoot Sunday through Thursday.
03:41And like, from the time the sun goes down to the time the sun came up.
03:45And it's a lot to get in, in just, you know, a couple weeks.
03:48So that was very challenging.
03:51We just didn't have a lot of opportunities to do multiple takes of everything.
03:55So it was a very pressure filled set.
03:58And it was, it's hard to stay awake and do your best work at, you know, when you've been up all night and you're trying to roll down a hill at 5 a.m.
04:06With giraffes in the back.
04:08Like, damn it, we got it.
04:09Oh, no, there's the hippo.
04:11I think for a lot of kids, we sort of internalize our parents' struggles.
04:20And we, in a lot of cases, become the parents.
04:23And we take on a lot of that anxiety, a lot of that worry, a lot of that pressure.
04:27And she has to keep reminding her, her daughter that it's my job to worry about you, not the other way around.
04:36But what's interesting at the beginning of the film, you see that she still had some unresolved issues with her dad.
04:42So, I'm sure before his untimely passing, she was constantly sort of put in a position of, of having to play parent.
04:51Or constantly be worried about, you know, her father and what he's doing and how he's getting along.
04:56And she found her own daughter in that same, you know, predicament.
05:00Obviously, the stakes are a bit different.
05:02But it's also how do you make sure you empower your children so when they are away from you, they feel capable.
05:09And they feel worthy enough to fight back.
05:12And that, so I thought that, that sort of reoccurring theme was, was incredibly important.
05:17So by the time we get to that scene where she's like, you are my daughter.
05:20I've basically, I've raised you for this moment and to save yourself and that you are capable of greatness.
05:26You are capable, when your back is to the wall, of doing extraordinary things.
05:30You are capable of greatness.
05:31You are capable of greatness.
05:32You are capable of greatness.
