All about the Tony Awards and how they started!

00:00The very first Tony Awards were held on April 6, 1947 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.
00:06The night started with dinner at 9 p.m. and continued until midnight when the winners were announced over the radio.
00:12It wasn't until 1956 that the Tony Awards appeared on television.
00:16Tickets to the first award show were only $7, but because of the success of the night, the price increased to $10 the next year.
00:24Today, tickets on average range between $300 to thousands of dollars.
00:28At the 1947 and 1948 Tonys, there was no official award.
00:33Instead, winners received a scroll, money clip, or cigarette lighter for men, and a compact for women.
00:39The awards we all know today weren't part of the show until 1967.

01:01However, the producers continues to maintain the title for most Tony Awards, winning 12 out of their 15 nominations.
01:08Director and producer Harold Prince has earned the most Tony Awards.
01:12With 21 wins, he received his first Tony for co-producing The Pajama Game in 1955.
01:17As celebrity guests arrive at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan for this year's events,
01:23they will travel down approximately 210 feet of red carpet.
