00:19So I ran for governor.
00:20Growing up, we were the only Indian family in town.
00:31My father wore a turban, my mother wore a sari, and we were different.
00:35But my parents always said, you know,
00:37the things that make you different make you special.
00:40I think my differences have always had people underestimate me.
00:44And I think that's the fun I have, is in going and proving them wrong.
00:49And so I grew up always trying to show people what we had in common.
00:55It was kind of a shock for the elected officials in South Carolina.
00:59One, I was the first minority.
01:01Two, I was the youngest governor in the country.
01:03And three, oh my God, she's a girl.
01:08I don't think you should ever be so partisan to say,
01:10we only want this kind of woman or that kind of woman.
01:13We need all women involved.
01:16I come before you today, both humbled and honored,
01:20to be considered to represent the United States of America
01:23at the United Nations.
01:25Now when the next woman decides to run, it won't be a big deal.
