In this segment of ESSENCE Now's "Health Myths Busted" panel, Dr. Jessica Shepherd, Dr. Drai and Dr. Nita Landry discuss the safest steps to bikini and Brazilian laser hair removal.
Transcript
00:00I'm so over getting a bikini wax and having to shave my hair downstairs.
00:08What are the side effects to having laser hair removal on my vagina?
00:11Signed, Bald Eagle in Sleddell, Louisiana.
00:15Well, all right, Louisiana.
00:17So I will start by saying, you know, it is safe to remove unwanted hair from the bikini
00:24region, but you just want to make sure that you're finding a qualified physician or a
00:28qualified provider.
00:29So you want to make sure that they are well-educated.
00:32You want to make sure it's sanitary.
00:34And you also want to make sure they're using the right laser for your skin tone.
00:38So ask the right questions.
00:39If you're African-American, ask them, what type of laser are you going to use?
00:43And then research that type of laser to make sure it's appropriate for your skin tone.
00:48And also ask them if they work with a lot of African-American people.
00:52And with the question, and in general, you always want to know the side effects.
00:56So potentially you can have changes in the color of the skin so it can get lighter or
01:01darker.
01:02And then there's always a risk of infection, swelling, redness, bruising, things like that.
01:08So also pregnant women, I want you to remember this.
01:12We don't really have a lot of evidence that it's safe for the fetus.
01:15So I would help pregnant women to stay away from that procedure because it's cosmetic and
01:20it's just not worth the risk.
01:21Is there anything that you should do to prep for that procedure before you get it done
01:24outside of research?
01:25Is there anything that you could physically do?
01:27I would say mainly just the research and prepping.
01:31So know what you're going to get.
01:33Yes.
01:33Know who you're going to.
