Algee Smith and Jason Mitchell talk about the challenge of playing real-life characters.
Transcript
00:00Both of you guys have already played like a musical figure from history.
00:04I know you were Ralph Dresvent in the New Edition movie and then you did Eazy-E.
00:08What is it like playing somebody else? Do you think it's easier or harder?
00:14For me, it's definitely harder.
00:16Because it's like if I were, I would never play you.
00:20It's like if I were to play you.
00:22I have to like completely study you and know every single way you move,
00:26like the way you might make a gesture when you say certain things.
00:29I have to get that down to a T.
00:30With doing other characters that aren't real, you get to kind of create that yourself
00:34and put them in the world and give them those things.
00:37So it makes it way harder.
00:39Yeah, definitely.
00:40You know, because at the end of the day, the family is the hardest critic.
00:44You know what I mean?
00:45But we try to do them the biggest justice.
00:47You know, they got stripped of their children.
00:48They got, you know, like we need a face to put to this tragedy.
00:52You know what I mean?
00:53And that within itself, you'd be like, ah, I don't know.
00:57But you know, ain't no internet, nothing to look up on these dudes.
00:59You know what I mean?
01:00Like they don't know.
01:01All they go is, ah, I would be so happy if you got it right.
01:04And you like, all right.
01:06No question.
01:07No question.
01:09Yeah, so it's definitely tough.
01:10Okay.
01:11And Algie, I don't know if anybody else has told you this,
01:14but in the movie, I was getting Lorenz Tate.
01:19Why do Fools Fallen Love when he was doing Frankie Lyman?
01:22And I know you have a musical background.
01:23So were you happy to like sharpen your skills as a musical talent in this?
01:27I've definitely been happy with the past two projects I've been on.
01:29I feel like it's just been a blessing.
01:31I've been able to do both of what I love to do in one project.
01:35And I won't be mad at that Lorenz compared to him.
01:40He had a nice run, too.
01:41Yeah, he's doing his thing.
01:43You know, you know, I'll take the Will Smith one, too.
01:45Right.
01:47Slow down.
01:49You said Will Smith?
01:50I was wondering that, too.
01:52Ah, who said that?
01:54Right.
01:55And if you guys could play any character from history, who would it be?
02:00Wow.
02:01You know what?
02:02I want to be involved in doing a bunch of projects that highlight black inventors.
02:08Okay.
02:08So people who made the refrigerator, who made the lights, you know,
02:11who made things that we use, the flat irons, the ironing board.
02:14Like, I want to be involved in doing something.
02:16She said flat irons.
02:17A black woman invented the tampon.
02:19Yeah, like being involved in those, telling those stories.
02:22That's what would make me happy.
02:24Man, I don't think I ever asked myself this question.
02:27Me either.
02:28But I think if I could play it,
02:31if I could play anybody, for real,
02:33it would probably be Floyd Mayweather.
02:35Okay.
02:35Okay.
02:36Yeah.
02:37And I know he's still razzling and dazzling in our time right now,
02:40but I mean, I done seen him do some amazing things.
02:42You know what I mean?
02:43He got one of the most militant minds that I've ever seen on a person.
02:47I'm just behind him.
02:47I'm good.
