00:00I can deal with Black Panther winning. I want to see that, you know, that was a huge moment in 2018 and Black History Month. Remember Black History Month last year?
00:07I mean, it was really lit.
00:09I was like, come on now!
00:13Essence News coming to you on the scene from Hollywood, California.
00:17Tonight we're at the Macro Essence Party where we're celebrating all the people of color that are nominated for an Oscar this weekend.
00:24Now, we all know there are a lot of movies and actors and actresses we think should have gotten an Oscar, but didn't.
00:31So tonight I'm going to be asking people, who would you give an honorary Oscar to?
00:36Now, my vote is for Angela Bassett for What's Love Got To Do With It?
00:39Because I don't know why she didn't get that Oscar, but let's go see what people say.
00:42I can't lie. You know, obviously before the interview I was going to say myself, you know what I'm saying?
00:46I'm not going to say that.
00:47What role of yours would you?
00:48If I had to award myself something, you know, I did kill girls.
00:54No, I'm kidding.
00:55I did a film called Kicks with Mahershala, you know, and we did that in the Bay.
00:59And honestly, I would give the Oscar to him because he killed that film.
01:03Malcolm X, Denzel Washington, I feel like that could have won.
01:07He could have won for Hurricane.
01:08He could have won for a lot of things.
01:10Cooley High, I would have given an honorary Oscar to Glenn Turman.
01:13For Claudine, I would have given an Oscar to Diane Carroll.
01:18For The Mac, I would have given an Oscar to Max Julian.
01:22I would give it to Cuba Gooden for radio.
01:25Wow.
01:25I don't want to call radio, but I remember as a kid watching that and bawling at Magic Johnson Theater.
01:32And he ain't never getting no recognition for that.
01:34Of all time performance, Eddie Murphy.
01:37Eddie Murphy coming to America.
01:38Black Panther is nominated. It's the first superhero movie nominated for an Oscar.
01:46Yes.
01:46There's Mr. Meteor Man right here.
01:49I'm sorry.
01:50Okay, so it's the first superhero movie that's nominated for an Oscar.
01:54Why do you think that is?
01:56You know, Ryan Coogler is a brilliant director.
01:59And I think what he did, he took the vision of a superhero and took it to the next level.
02:05We told a real story. It wasn't just a superhero movie for superhero's sake.
02:10It was lineage in there. It was territory. It was kingdoms. It was a whole thing. It was spirit.
02:17It was, you know what I mean? Like ancestral. It was, I might be making up words right now. I'm sorry.
02:22But black is beautiful.
02:24I'm black and I'm proud.
02:27This weekend, Regina King is nominated for the first time, which is crazy.
02:33But what well wishes, if you're going to wish her good luck, what would you say to Regina right now?
02:38Regina King, you are a queen, first and foremost.
02:42We love and adore you. We wish you the best.
02:45I think you got this on lock, honestly.
02:47You have been giving your heart and your soul.
02:48What's funny and what's interesting is that Regina's been at this for so long, but you're still this fresh face.
02:55You're still this fresh energy.
02:57And you're so amazing, so talented, so brilliant.
02:59And I wish you all the best.
03:01One, you know, the nomination is long overdue.
03:04She's given a lot of brilliant performances.
03:06And she's a really dope director and fun to work with and really giving and really dope.
03:10She's just a really dope person.
03:11So I hope she wins, you know?
03:13I really do hope she wins.
03:14I think she deserves it.
03:15She, like, killed that performance in that movie.
03:19Such an amazing night.
03:21Thank you so much for tuning in.
03:23Make sure you tune in to the Oscars on Sunday.
03:26See who's hosting.
03:27I don't know.
03:27See who's going to win.
03:28I don't know.
03:29But we know who we're rooting for, right?
