00:00Coming to you from the Macro Lodge, right now I'm joined by Stanley Nelson, director of Miles Davis, The Birth of Cool.
00:10Also right next to him is Aaron Davis, Miles Davis' son.
00:14And then right next to him we have Vince Wilbur Jr. who is Miles Davis' nephew.
00:19Thank you guys so much for coming by.
00:21Thank you for having us.
00:22Now Stanley, I have to ask you, doing a movie, a documentary about such an iconic figure.
00:27We know documentaries can be so different depending on whose lens it's told through.
00:32What did you want people walking away from this documentary knowing about Miles?
00:37Well, you know, it's a two-hour film so I think that there's a lot of things that you can walk away with.
00:42You know, I'm happy if you walk away and say, wow, that was some good music.
00:46If you walk away and say, you know, I learned something new about Miles, that's good too.
00:51If you say, you know, that was entertaining and I want to go get a hamburger, that's good too.
00:56You know, so really people, you know, people will take away from the film what they will.
01:02It sounds shallow and it sounds trite but, you know, I would like people to be entertained by the film.
01:07I want people to be awake when the film ends.
01:10Yeah, be awake. I'm sure they will. I'm sure it's amazing.
01:13So Aaron, being Miles' son, what's something in the movie that people would be surprised to know about him?
01:20Well, I think a lot of people are surprised to know that he was such an artist.
01:23Like, he liked painting so much and drawing and sketching and how much it became a part of his everyday life.
01:28Yeah.
01:29And by that I mean part of Vince and I's everyday life running and getting supplies and cleaning up and papers and that, you know.
01:35Yeah.
01:36But seriously, that became a huge part of his creative outlet.
01:39So Vince, you are actually drummer and band leader for, let me get this right, the Miles Electric Band, right?
01:48Mm-hmm.
01:49Okay. So why do you think, and it also features some of the original members of Miles' band.
01:53Yes, yes, yes.
01:54It must be like so amazing.
01:56Yeah, it started out Sunset Junction and it was called The Bitches Brew Revisited.
02:01And so I just called Wallace Roney, Daryl Jones, you know, guys that we played with Miles. Well, Wallace of course didn't.
02:08But Daryl Jones, Robert Irving III, Darren Johnson, and then we dug it and so it morphed to this.
02:16And we toured and we're touring now and Stanley, you know, when Stanley called you, he said,
02:21man, I want you in Sundance and we're here.
02:23Incredible.
02:24Well, I want to thank you guys so much.
02:26You guys are debuting the movie tonight.
02:28So good luck with that.
02:29I'm sure we're going to love it.
02:30Miles Davis, The Birth of Cool.
02:32Hopefully we'll be seeing that soon.
