Iman Beauty Carnival Interview
Transcript
00:00we've seen obviously Fenty Beauty kind of take over and have this whole conversation about how
00:12there needs to be you know a wider range of foundations but you came 25 years before that
00:18you know you you were a pioneer in this industry why was it so important for you to create
00:24specifically products for women of color you know that's a conversation that we're having now that
00:31you had 25 years ago yeah well first of all because I am woman with skin of color so I knew firsthand
00:37the trials and tribulations in finding products but let's not forget about history there was fashion
00:43fair at that time absolutely I was the first person who brought multicultural and made it into more of
00:51of a global rather than just a black woman I was you what you were you were also helping Hispanic
00:57women and Asian women exactly because if you really think about it I was really in the business of skin
01:02tone I wasn't thinking about ethnic backgrounds if you think about a Filipino woman there are Filipino
01:08women who are as dark as I am and if you think about Spanish girls or even Puerto Rican girls
01:12there are the blonde blue eyes there are the middle range and then there are the girls who are as dark
01:16as me or even darker so I was thinking I was talking about that kind of a multi-culti generation that
01:24was growing up with hip-hop that have a totally a point of view of seeing beauty so I for myself
01:30success it really meant always to me that it's not what I do is what I aspire others to do you know if
01:38there is anybody who should take a helm as a beauty icon now Rihanna especially with Fenty Beauty I'm glad
01:45that is a black girl rather than a white company and mind you because at least she knows what she's
01:50talking about you know so you know there was fashion fair before me there was I and there will be new
01:57ones on the market but what what really perplexes me is how a lot of the big brands jump on on a trend
02:06so here was Fenty said she had 40 foundation 40 fashion you know foundations every company
02:13went jumped on that we have 50 we have 60 we have 70 we have 80 we have a hundred but at the same time it's not the
02:21the the the amount of tones you have it is the product at the end of the time is the nuances of it it that is and the formulations you have the undertones right have you thought about this it's not just adding more range of it is the nuances of it
02:30it's actually having product that work it's not a pant on you know this is we're talking about a race and the other thing that's very important it's that I've always said you know the the the future of beauty is in diversity it's in diversity is in diversity the world is browning it exactly but more important also we have the clout
02:49we have the business we have the intelligence we have now ways to check everything we're not falling for whatever we are given and at the end of the day you know at the end of the day you don't have to buy anybody's product unless you really want to and it's catered to you and it's catered to you and it's the
03:19it addresses your issues that's what you want in a product doesn't matter who's on it who what the name of the brand is but that it's true to you and what you want it for iman cosmetics it has always been my my philosophy has been authenticity longevity and relevancy that's what it stands for and that's what it still stands for 25 years later amen clap that up y'all
