00:00Today on Essence Live, we play a game of barbershop charades with Regina Hall.
00:08The voice star, Avery Wilson, pays tribute to his idol, Prince.
00:12And is your makeup case always a mess?
00:14Well, we've got some great beauty hacks to help your favorite glosses and shades last a little bit longer.
00:19But right now, it's the Hot List, the biggest stories you're buzzing about today.
00:24Police in Wilmington, Delaware, say they expect to file charges this week against the students involved in the death of 16-year-old Amy Joyner Francis.
00:35The teen was killed last week during a fight in the bathroom at Howard High School of Technology.
00:39Wilmington's police chief says that although the investigation is still ongoing, they already have three people of interest in the incident.
00:45Amy's family and friends have released a statement thanking the country for its overwhelming support,
00:49and they will honor her memory this Sunday during a private funeral.
00:54According to Billboard, Princess Sister Tika Nelson said the singer did not have a will,
01:01and she has filed paperwork asking for a corporate trust to oversee his estate.
01:05There have been conflicting reports about just how big his fortune is,
01:08but Billboard estimates his property alone to be worth around $27 million.
01:13Meanwhile, after the singer died suddenly last week, sales of his music have soared by 16,000 percent
01:20and caused him to shoot to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart.
01:23His former drummer and friend Sheila E. also said there are plans to turn his beloved Paisley Park compound into a museum.
01:33Now, I think it's safe to say Beyonce is having the best week ever.
01:37Her formation tour just kicked off in Miami, and her visual album Lemonade is still all anyone could talk about,
01:43and it's been five days since its release.
01:45According to Variety, HBO is planning to submit Lemonade for an Emmy.
01:51Meanwhile, Rachel Roy, Rita Ora, and Maya have all come out to say they are not Becky with the good hair.
01:57And for some reason, Iggy Azalea has even inserted herself into the conversation by tweeting that Becky is a racial slur.
02:04I mean, what?
02:05Here's what you had to say on our Facebook page.
02:07Camellia Marie wrote,
02:08I cannot believe people are so focused on who she is talking about and stalking every woman they suspect.
02:14This is why she stays rich, because people buy her music and believe everything she says.
02:19Lorella Pearson agreed.
02:21Becky is a nameless, faceless, irrelevant, unimportant, and easy piece of ass.
02:26Okay, Becky.
02:27Everyone that Jay-Z has slept with behind her back is Becky.
02:30Stop trying to pinpoint a single person.
02:32Hell, they're all Becky.
02:34I mean...
02:37Regina Hall is up next.
02:38It's Thursday, April 28th, and Essence Live starts now.
02:42Welcome to Essence Live.
02:50I'm your host, Dana Blair.
02:52We always want to hear from you, so get those Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook fingers ready,
02:56and use the hashtag Essence Live to join the conversation.
02:59And if you'd ever like to call in live to ask questions of our celebrity guests, and I know you do,
03:04or you just want to sound off perhaps about a little lemonade or anything else you can,
03:08just email us at Essence Live at Essence.com for details.
03:11Okay, if you recently saw Barbershop 3 and enjoyed the addition of Regina Hall to the cast,
03:16you may have wondered the same thing we did.
03:18Why doesn't she get her props as an actress?
03:21She can do so many comedies and dramas with ease.
03:24Or, do accolades and awards even matter to her at this point?
03:27Well, here's what she told us during a recent visit to our studios.
03:34You know what?
03:35I just love working, you know, consistently, and I have really great supporters,
03:39and it's been fun.
03:41I mean, I don't really have any complaints, honestly.
03:46I feel like people who, you know, go and spend their money or take their time to watch the movie,
03:52I'm really just appreciative of that.
03:54Do you have a preference of what you'll do next?
03:56Because I know you're, of course, known for your comedic timing,
03:58but you've done a little bit of everything.
04:00I saw that you were an NYU girl, so it's like maybe Broadway in your future or anything?
04:04You know what? I don't know.
04:06I would love to...
04:07Because I'm a theater baby myself. I love theater.
04:08Yeah, I mean, I love theater. I would love to do Broadway.
04:10I mean, it's challenging. You just have to be ready for that.
04:12Mm-hmm.
04:13You know, it's a very demanding schedule, and you really, you've got to put, there's no, like, can I do that again?
04:19Right.
04:20You know, you've got to be prepared every single night, every single show, a hundred percent.
04:25So, it's exciting, but I think you get an adrenaline from it, you know?
04:28Yes.
04:29Having that direct audience, you know, contact, it's like a high.
04:33So, let's talk Barbershop 3. It's out in theaters now, and you're joining a very, very robust cast.
04:40Let's see Common, Ice Cube, Eve, Nicki Minaj, Cedric the Entertainer, Anthony Anderson.
04:46Baby Smooth.
04:47Yes, the list goes on and on and on.
04:49It felt like going to set every day for that project. It had to be fun.
04:52It was fun. It was really good. You know what? We had such a great cast. By the end of it, we felt like family.
04:57Mm-hmm.
04:58And because we had to shoot every day in that Barbershop, you're around each other 14, 16 hours a day.
05:03Oh, wow.
05:04So, thankfully, we all liked each other a lot.
05:07You know, because it could go one or two ways, but thankfully, we all liked each other a lot, and we were all, you know, we all laughed.
05:14We made each other laugh. We respected each other's work. So, it was a good climate.
05:18Mm-hmm. Now, are there any funny outtakes or anything that happened behind the scenes that you can share with us?
05:23Yeah, you know, I had this character. It was just so dumb. I can't even do it now.
05:27But I was Angie in the movie. That's my character. So, we do this skit behind the scenes called Ask Angie.
05:31Uh-oh.
05:32But you would ask Angie a question when she would give an, I mean, not a good answer.
05:36Like, what kind of answer would Angie give?
05:38Okay, you ask me a question, and I'm gonna give you an Angie answer.
05:40Okay. Okay. So, I've been dating this guy for three months, and I just keep calling him and calling him and calling him, and he's not calling me back. Do you think I should continue to call him?
05:50I think you better make him call you back. Angie had a voice. I think you better make him call you back, which is no answer.
05:59No, it's no answer. I'm like, do I sit outside his house? Angie seems like she's saying sit outside his house, track him down at his job.
06:05Angie's implied that you should stalk him. Oh, God.
06:08Um, no, her answers were never good, but the craziest thing is that as soon as she answered, everyone would be so excited, like, screaming, like, we have actually, I don't have it with me, but screaming, like, ah!
06:19So excited for Angie, picking up chairs, throwing everything. And the whole cast did it. I don't know why. That tells you what that many hours on the set starts doing.
06:28It can do to you.
06:29Yeah.
06:30Well, we're gonna have a little bit more fun with Barbershop. We're gonna stick around and play a little Barbershop charades game.
06:35Two teams here in the studio. Essence assistant beauty editor, Virginia Lohman.
06:39Hello, hello.
06:40She's on my team, the certainly winning team. And Essence's head of video, Keisha Lemon.
06:44Hi.
06:45Hi. All right. So in the monitor behind Virginia here, you'll see a word or phrase that's associated with Barbershops and salons, and we have to act it out for our partner.
06:53Regina and I will be acting it out.
06:55Yeah, yeah.
06:56It's time.
06:57No cheating.
06:58Go time.
06:59Let's get started.
07:00Okay.
07:01Um.
07:02Is this part of it?
07:04Pass, pass. I don't even know how to do that word.
07:06Cutting hair.
07:07Pass.
07:08Oh, oh, oh, oh.
07:09Cutting hair, straightening hair, trimming hair.
07:10Yes.
07:11Okay.
07:12Pensive.
07:13Ooh, patting the edges.
07:14Um.
07:15You've got an itch.
07:16You've...
07:17Likes?
07:18No, um...
07:19Braiding hair.
07:20Braiding scalp.
07:21An edge up.
07:22You have a perm.
07:23Getting a perm.
07:24Getting a relaxer.
07:25You need to rinse out your relaxer.
07:26It's burning.
07:27Yes!
07:28Okay.
07:29Woo!
07:30Oh.
07:31Mmm.
07:32Oh.
07:33I got these CDs.
07:36Panhandling.
07:37Selling things.
07:38Okay.
07:39Oh, I'm waiting forever.
07:41Why is this taking so long?
07:42It's been forever.
07:43Time, time, time, time.
07:44Uh-huh.
07:45Time, time, time, time.
07:46That was like five minutes.
07:48Exactly.
07:49We got a good third.
07:50I mean, you know.
07:51The energy was flowing.
07:52The energy was flowing.
07:53The energy was flowing.
07:54Okay.
07:55So now, Virginia and Keisha.
07:56Y'all are gonna take our places.
07:57We did well.
07:58We did well.
07:59Okay.
08:00Virginia.
08:01Switch.
08:02You come out.
08:03Regina and Keisha, you're stepping in.
08:04And...
08:05Go.
08:08Okay.
08:09Um...
08:10Uh, edges.
08:12Um...
08:13Uh...
08:14Greasing your scalp.
08:17Uh...
08:18Oh, picking your hair.
08:19Picking your afro.
08:20She's cheating.
08:21Uh...
08:22Washing your face.
08:23Uh...
08:24Shaving.
08:25Shaving.
08:26Shaving.
08:27Shaving your beard.
08:28Uh...
08:29Oh, shaving cream.
08:30Uh...
08:31Shaving.
08:32Uh...
08:33Shaving.
08:34Oh, aftershave.
08:35I think it's been 30 seconds.
08:37Sweeping.
08:38Sweeping.
08:39Oh, time's up.
08:40Time's up.
08:41Time's up.
08:42Down in the control room.
08:43What's my scores?
08:44What's my scores looking like?
08:45No, it is not a time.
08:46It can't be no time.
08:47It can't be no time.
08:48They skipped one.
08:49They skipped one.
08:50It's just a time.
08:51They skipped one.
08:52But we passed.
08:53I think we're going to have to go to the one.
08:54We're going to have to go to the play back on this one.
09:07Then they have more time.
09:08Yeah, they definitely have more time.
09:09Keisha, look.
09:10Keisha knew an answer.
09:11Nope, same.
09:12I didn't have any answers.
09:13These games of three getting very heated.
09:15No, they didn't.
09:18The shaving cream you paid on, Virginia.
09:20No, it's not, Keisha.
09:22But it's okay. It's okay.
09:24I can say that y'all won.
09:26Y'all won. Y'all won. It's okay.
09:28We'll get them next time, girl. We'll get them next time.
09:30Virginia, hold it inside. Hold it inside.
09:32Virginia and Keisha, thank you so very much
09:34for participating. And, Regina, you know you're welcome
09:36back anytime. Thank you all for having me.
09:38I want to come play another game.
09:40Oh, it's on. We can't say nothing but a word.
09:42We can't say nothing but a word.
09:43Because Virginia don't feel convinced, right?
09:45We are bowing out gracefully.
09:47Everyone, please be sure to go see Barbershop 3,
09:49the next cut, in theaters right now.
09:55Thanks again, Regina, for being such a great sport
09:57and playing barbershop charades with us.
09:59Later on in the show, we are going to help you
10:01get your makeup bag all the way together
10:03with some simple tips to make your favorite shades
10:05last a little bit longer.
10:07But first, music sold child dishes on which
10:09song on his latest album was inspired
10:11by his personal love life.
10:13And Renee Elise Goldsberry talks about
10:15the success of the Broadway play,
10:16Hamilton.
10:22Off of my new album, Life on Earth,
10:24the single, I do.
10:26The very first line, the very first thing you hear me say
10:28is, sometimes I don't like you.
10:30Yeah, that comes from a very real place, you know,
10:34because you can find yourself in a relationship
10:36with somebody that you love to the end of everything.
10:38But, you know, it gets to certain points where you're not really,
10:42you're not really cool with them because it's something
10:44that may have said or done.
10:46Sometimes I don't like you.
10:48Yeah, always got a problem.
10:50I heard the music first.
10:52Me and the producer, Warren Campbell, he made a point
10:54and he said, people love hearing
10:56songs from you because
10:58you have a sense of like
11:00realness about
11:02what you say. So when he made that point,
11:04I was kind of going through something at the time.
11:06And I got in the booth and the very first thing that came out,
11:10sometimes I don't like you.
11:12And, you know, it just came out, you know,
11:14it was kind of like a graceful freestyle.
11:16I don't always understand
11:18without you.
11:20It's important that you let it be known where you stand with a person,
11:24you know, when you don't say things that are necessary
11:26because you don't want to hurt their feelings or whatever.
11:28You ended up, you end up doing more damage
11:30and it happens a lot in, well, I'm sure it happens a lot
11:32in everybody's life.
11:34But it happens a lot to me because I feel like
11:36I'm misunderstood.
11:38I felt it was important to be direct.
11:40Sometimes I don't like you.
11:42You always got a problem with anything that I do.
11:44I don't always understand everything about you,
11:46but I know
11:48I can't live without you.
11:50We got to talk about some things, but
11:52yeah, I do. I love you.
11:54Yes.
12:04The top three questions that I'm asked the most
12:06about Hamilton that are the most challenging to answer
12:10are, can I get two tickets?
12:13Which I always want to say yes, but I can't always.
12:16Why do you think Hamilton is so successful?
12:20And that's challenging because I don't yet know.
12:24It's a really hard answer.
12:26When am I leaving the show?
12:28Because I don't know.
12:30I kind of never want to leave, but at the same time
12:32I'm always asking myself that question when I'm doing
12:34anything is when is it time to move on and do something
12:36else.
12:38And then the better the job, the better the experience,
12:41the more you love the people, the harder it is to answer.
12:44So this one especially will be hard because it's kind
12:46of hard to top.
12:48But I'm really prayerful about it and I believe very strongly
12:52that you are given everything you need to accomplish something
12:56as long as you're supposed to be doing it.
12:58So in this moment, this is a very challenging job
13:02and I am pulling it off because I'm supposed to be doing it.
13:07And there will be a moment when I start to stumble
13:10and it'll be like the Lord saying, it's time to go.
13:18Who do you girl crush on?
13:20Solange.
13:21Um, Rihanna.
13:22Yes.
13:23Um, Bijanze.
13:24Bijanze.
13:25Oh, Bijanze.
13:27Rihanna Bijanze.
13:28Um, Rihanna Bijanze.
13:31Welcome back to Essence Live.
13:32That was the lovely Tracee Ellis Ross talking about her
13:35long list of girl crushes.
13:37You can watch the full interview on Essence.com
13:39under the video section.
13:40So, if you're anything like me, your favorite makeup items
13:44can go through some rough times.
13:46You know, lipsticks that have the top squished down,
13:48shattered compacts, or the absolute worst, dried out mascara.
13:52So, you just end up tossing it all out and you have to start
13:54all over again?
13:55Well, not anymore.
13:57All of those problems are fixable.
13:59And here to show us how is a woman who beats my face
14:01to the gods, honey.
14:03Every day, no, almost every week.
14:05For this show, makeup artist Tara Lauren.
14:07How are you?
14:08Hi Trina.
14:09Hi, I'm so happy that you're here on this side of the camera.
14:12It's a little cool being on this side.
14:14And you're here to show us some super easy beauty hacks.
14:16So, let's get started.
14:18What do you have first up?
14:19I just mentioned a broken compact, but now this looks tragic.
14:21Okay, a lot of people go through this, okay?
14:23You have your favorite eyeshadow or pressed powder,
14:26and it falls on the ground, shambles, it's shattered.
14:29Regroup, collect yourself, because it can be fixed.
14:31Yes.
14:32Oh, yes.
14:33Now, what you need is your compact that is in shambles.
14:36Don't cry.
14:37And you want to grab something like, um, you can use a butter knife.
14:41Okay.
14:42You know, from your kitchen, or because, you know, I got this.
14:45Use a probe.
14:46You doze this.
14:47I'm going to use a spatula.
14:48Uh-huh.
14:49Okay.
14:50Now, what you want to do is you want to take your spatula and start to break apart the eyeshadow.
14:54Start working the eyeshadow into, like, try to make it as finely milled as you can.
14:59Oh, so you break it up even more.
15:00Yeah, you want to break it up even more.
15:01Okay.
15:02Like a powder.
15:03Got you.
15:04As much as you want.
15:05Right?
15:06And then what you're going to do is, as you start to see it, come to, like, you know,
15:09a nice powder size.
15:10You don't want it to get too messy, but it can get messy.
15:13You want to take a little bit of rubbing alcohol.
15:15Okay.
15:1670% is good.
15:17You don't have to do it.
15:18This is stuff that you would have in your house.
15:19Yeah, definitely.
15:20You want to take a little bit of alcohol.
15:21I like to take a little bit and add more as I go.
15:24And you want to just drop a few drops on the eyeshadow.
15:27Okay.
15:28Because what we're going to do is we're going to take it from a powder form to a cream form.
15:32Okay.
15:33I'm just going to put this to the side.
15:34Sure.
15:35And then we're going to pick back up our knife or our spatula.
15:37And then we're just going to start to work it into the shadow.
15:40Oh, okay.
15:41To a creamier consistency.
15:43Mm-hmm.
15:44Like I said, it could get a little messy, but you know what?
15:46It's okay.
15:47You're saving a life here.
15:48It's okay to get a little messy.
15:49You're saving a life.
15:50And now what happens?
15:51So then we're going to make it to a creamy consistency, and we're going to start to spread
15:53it out and mold it back into the compact.
15:55Okay.
15:56So we're going to be pressing and shifting and pressing and shifting until it kind of gets back
15:59into the form.
16:00Okay, and then?
16:01Because, you know, we're going to keep working into it.
16:03We want to take like a little paper towel.
16:04All right.
16:05You want to fold it in half or make it small.
16:06Uh-huh.
16:07And you just want to lightly press on top of the eye shadow.
16:10This is going to help to not only absorb some of the alcohol that you use, but also kind
16:14of assist it a little bit as getting back into the form.
16:17Into the compact.
16:18And this is what we have here.
16:19And this is one that I did yesterday.
16:20Just, you know, for the magic of film.
16:22TV.
16:23Voila.
16:24Have it done already for you guys.
16:25Just let it dry out maybe overnight or an hour or so?
16:26I would suggest doing it overnight.
16:28Okay.
16:29Just to get the best results.
16:31Just leave it open.
16:32Leave it to the side.
16:33And if you put it far away from me, you won't be urged to like touch it and see if it's dry
16:36or not yet.
16:37Got you.
16:38Awesome.
16:39Thank you so much.
16:40So now a lot of women grab their mascara and the first thing they do is they're pumping,
16:44they're getting ready to lay it on.
16:46That pumping is actually adding air into the mascara.
16:49Mm-hmm.
16:50Forming the pigments in the product inside to dry out.
16:52Okay.
16:53So what are you supposed to do?
16:54Just like swirl it around?
16:55Exactly.
16:56What you want to do is you just want to swirl it in an open, like just want to swirl it
16:59all around.
17:00That way you're getting the product off the side.
17:01You're getting more bang for your buck because you're incorporating all that product
17:04on the side and on the bottom into the brush.
17:06Okay.
17:07How long are you supposed to keep your mascara?
17:08I would definitely recommend keeping mascara the absolute max three months.
17:13Now, what you can do is you can remove the brush from the mascara and you can grab some
17:20contact solution.
17:21Okay.
17:22What you want to do is you want to take at least two to three drops inside of your mascara.
17:26Mm-hmm.
17:27Now we're using contact solution because it's safe for your eyes.
17:31You don't want to use anything like water or a lot of people are saying like oil because
17:35you can actually manipulate the product inside of the mascara.
17:39Okay.
17:40So you want to use something that's safe for your eyes and also this is like saline based
17:44so it's nice and safe and it's great for the product as well.
17:47And especially because by your eyes.
17:48Exactly.
17:49You need to be careful.
17:50Really careful.
17:51So we're going to put back the two to three drops.
17:52We're going to put back our mascara wand and we're going to do our circular.
17:55The swirl.
17:56Uh-huh.
17:57Exactly.
17:58Our swirl.
17:59Uh-huh.
18:00So we're going to swirl it on around breaking up all those clumps and you know nobody wants
18:03those spider lashes.
18:04So we're going to work up all those clumps and voila.
18:06Voila.
18:07Fresh mascara.
18:08Awesome.
18:09Awesome.
18:10These are some really really good tips so far.
18:11The next one though is something that I personally have a lot of difficulty with.
18:15Cleaning your brushes.
18:16Okay.
18:17Like say you've done your daytime look and you've got asked to go out somewhere and you
18:20don't want to use the same colors that you've used during the day so you just want to clean
18:23your brushes really quick so you can add a fresh application.
18:25So what we're going to do here is we're going to make our own brush cleaner.
18:29Okay.
18:30We are going to use some simple products.
18:32We're going to first use water.
18:33Okay.
18:34Now I'm going to make a small batch here just so we can you know see how it goes.
18:37We're going to add water.
18:38You can use about four to six ounces of water.
18:41Purified water.
18:42So like bottled water.
18:43Then we want to add a couple of tablespoons of alcohol.
18:49So I would use probably about two to three tablespoons of alcohol.
18:53Okay.
18:54We're going to add that.
18:55Fine around the house.
18:56Exactly.
18:57Alcohol seems to be our close personal friend right now.
18:58You know it keeps you clean.
18:59It keeps you clean.
19:00Then you want to take a tablespoon of your favorite shampoo.
19:04Again shampoo is great because our brushes are hair.
19:08So we want to treat them fairly good.
19:11So what you want to do is you want to take about a tablespoon of your favorite shampoo.
19:16This will help you keep your brushes longer right?
19:18Exactly.
19:19I like to think of it like sometimes your brushes are like your cashmere source.
19:21So after we take that tablespoon of shampoo.
19:23Uh huh.
19:24We are going to.
19:25This is actually my favorite part.
19:26This is my favorite part because I can smell it already.
19:28Um, I like to use essential oils inside of my brush cleaner because not only are they, not only do they smell amazing, they actually, some of them have antibacterial properties.
19:40Which is perfect.
19:41Which is great for cleaning your brushes.
19:42Especially on your face.
19:43Exactly.
19:44Then you want to add two to three drops.
19:45I'm going to use some lavender here.
19:46Which is my personal favorite.
19:48And then I'm going to use a little bit of peppermint.
19:51Okay.
19:52Okay.
19:53And now we just have to stir this up.
19:56How does this work?
19:57What I like to do is I like to put it in a spray bottle like the one that I made here.
20:00Yes.
20:01So you can just put it in your spray bottle.
20:02Shake it up a little bit.
20:03Uh huh.
20:04You want to use a paper towel.
20:05Clean paper towel.
20:06Press your brush on top.
20:07Uh huh.
20:08Give it a couple of sprays.
20:10And it smells amazing.
20:11And then you just want to wish it around.
20:13Wish it around.
20:14You see that coming off?
20:15Yeah.
20:16Yeah.
20:17But I still do recommend watching your brushes.
20:20Personal.
20:21Once a week.
20:22If you're using on somebody else after every application.
20:23And now the next one is something that I have a huge issue with.
20:27Because I don't know if you've noticed Essence Live.
20:29I don't have any hair.
20:30Pause.
20:31So I like to wear a lip.
20:32Quite a bit.
20:33But I'm often breaking my lipsticks.
20:35Okay.
20:36This is another common thing too.
20:37So how do I save my favorite lipstick?
20:39Okay.
20:40Now what you want to do is you want to take your lipstick.
20:42That has broken.
20:43A lot of times lipsticks they break like close to the base.
20:46Which is a good thing.
20:47Right.
20:48So what you want to do is you want to take the broken piece.
20:51And just lay it down for a second.
20:53Okay.
20:54So what you want to do is you want to take the end of the lipstick.
20:57Where we took out the broken part.
20:59So the base.
21:00Exactly.
21:01And you want to get like a hair dryer.
21:02And you want to put it on probably warm.
21:04And I like to put it on warm low.
21:06And then you want to run it over the top of the lipstick.
21:09Now we don't want to melt it completely.
21:11We just want to get it to like a little bit of a...
21:14Like a goo?
21:15Exactly.
21:16Okay.
21:17Not too gooey.
21:18Just kind of like loosen it up a little bit.
21:19Okay.
21:20So we're going to put it on.
21:22Oh, we're blowing our napkins.
21:24All right.
21:25We got action on the set today.
21:26That's the slide.
21:27And then what you're going to do is as it's in this...
21:29You're going to see it melt a little bit.
21:30What you're going to do is you're going to take that broken piece.
21:32And you're going to enter it back into the top.
21:36Now you're going to notice that a little bit of lipstick may come out the side.
21:39Sure.
21:40It's okay.
21:41Take your clean hands and just slightly rub it around the room.
21:44Oh, look at that.
21:45And it's all back together.
21:46Exactly.
21:47But you don't want to use it right away.
21:48Right.
21:49I know you're probably really excited to probably use it right away.
21:51What you want to do is you want to kind of put it up and let it dry and let it mend.
21:55Or if you want to use it like in the next couple of hours, you can just throw it in your fridge.
21:59And then by the time you're ready, you'll be able to use it again.
22:01Your lips will be popping.
22:02Yes.
22:03All right.
22:04And so I did one right here.
22:05Okay.
22:06Just to kind of get a view of how you're getting your lipstick back.
22:09That's perfect.
22:10And now we have one last hack that features our Essence Beauty Box.
22:13Okay.
22:14All right.
22:15This is our April Beauty Box.
22:16And inside, what do we have?
22:18Now, the Palmer's swivel stick is like a life stick.
22:21Which I live by the cocoa butter.
22:23I feel like every woman needs to have one in her purse.
22:25Yes.
22:26Okay?
22:27Now, you can do everything from hydrate your lips.
22:29You can use it as a cuticle oil.
22:31You can hit your elbows if you need it.
22:34Just saying.
22:35But another thing you can do is you can do one of the modern makeup looks, the dewy eye.
22:40Oh, nice.
22:41What you want to do is you want to take your finger and you want to just rub it, rub it,
22:46rub it, rub it on top.
22:47Mm-hmm.
22:48And then you want to start to press it into your lid.
22:53Now, what's the difference between the dewy eye and I've been in the gym too long and got
22:56my life eye?
22:57Well, you want to do like a nice shimmer.
22:59Now, I'm just going to work this in.
23:01Oh.
23:02And you're going to see like it's a nice little shimmer.
23:03Oh, yeah.
23:04Like a little glow.
23:05Yeah.
23:06Remember, you have natural oils in your eyelids already.
23:07So once they start to work together, it's going to give you a nice, silky, glistening
23:11eyelid that doesn't look oily or greasy.
23:13Is that with or without eye shadow?
23:14I would recommend without eye shadow.
23:17You won't even need that much.
23:18Just a little bit of this in your mascara will help it nicely pop and open your eyes.
23:23To make people think you woke up like that.
23:25Exactly.
23:26Tara, thank you so very much for all of those tips and tricks.
23:28No problem.
23:29But I'm certainly going to try.
23:30And if you're not subscribed to the Essence Beauty Box, I suggest you do so.
23:35Sign up now at EssenceBeautyBox.com and Maze Box promises to be extra special for you
23:40and that special mother in your life.
23:42I'm going to check it out.
23:51My definition of beauty is whatever makes you feel good on the inside and out.
23:58Having confidence and exuding it, not only when we're made up and we're dressed to the
24:04nines, but when you have no makeup on.
24:07It really is more than what you put on your face when you walk out the door.
24:11Where beauty is, how you see the world.
24:13Feeling beautiful and being beautiful is a constant journey.
24:16And there are some days where I just don't feel beautiful.
24:18And then sometimes I have to check myself.
24:20And it takes time to really learn to love yourself.
24:23I think I'm still a work in progress, but it's more about me being beautiful inside.
24:28I would say something that I definitely thought was a flaw growing up was my hair actually.
24:34But I really love it now.
24:35You know, my strong features in general, my high cheekbones, my large eyes, large nose,
24:39and full lips.
24:40They're just things I'm beginning to love about myself because it's what makes me me.
24:45I think if you walk down the street and you're proud of who you are with your flaws and all
24:49of your beautiful aspects, no one can stop you.
24:52Knowing who you are and being true to who you are and knowing that what you're going to
24:55do is really big and believing in yourself is just such a beautiful thing to do.
24:59I got a gut.
25:00But you know what?
25:01I don't mind it because they're Spanx.
25:03Thank you, Sarah Blakely.
25:04When you're happy on the inside, you're radiant on the outside.
25:24You're watching Essence Live and is there any doubt what this week's Black Girl Magic
25:28moment of the week will be?
25:29Uh, no.
25:30From the epic visuals to the songs themselves.
25:32Hold up.
25:33They don't love you like I love you.
25:35To the image of those fierce women rocking off white on a Louisiana front porch.
25:39Shout out to my home state.
25:40To cameos from a twerking Serena Williams and Trayvon and Michael Brown's moms.
25:44Beyonce's lemonade was Black Girl Magic personified.
25:47And in studio with me now are two of the young women featured in the video.
25:51Please welcome Beyonce protégés Khloe and Haley to the show.
25:54Hi.
25:55I'm so happy that you're here.
25:56Oh my goodness.
25:57We've just been kind of vibing out and hanging.
25:59It is so nice to have you ladies here.
26:00Absolutely a pleasure.
26:02I want all of the scoop.
26:03All of the scoop.
26:04So are there any good anecdotes of what happened behind the scenes of that epic lemonade, I
26:09want to call it a documentary that you can share with us?
26:11Oh my goodness.
26:12Well, we filmed our segment in December in NOLA and it was so stunning and it was incredible
26:20being surrounded by all those phenomenal women, you know, especially the young ones like Zendaya
26:25and Amanda.
26:26I know.
26:27It was just so inspiring and we didn't know how it was going to be used but we just knew
26:32that it was going to be something really special.
26:34Yeah.
26:35So you had to keep a secret since December?
26:36Is that what you're trying to tell me?
26:37Yes, we did.
26:38I don't know if I can tell that in.
26:39But it was actually quite easy because we both knew so we were discussing it amongst each
26:45other.
26:46It was so fun.
26:47So it helps to have a sister you can share that with.
26:48Of course.
26:49Yes.
26:50And there's of course a lot of talk about Jay-Z and Beyonce and he was on set.
26:53What was that energy like?
26:54Were you kind of aware of what the entire body of work was going to be or just your-
26:58Oh, just our parts.
26:59They're such incredible beings.
27:01It's such awesome-
27:02So you weren't clued into everything if you will.
27:03Oh yeah, just the parts we were.
27:05Yeah.
27:06That's fair enough.
27:07And you are also signed to Beyonce's label.
27:09Yes.
27:10Okay.
27:11What was that phone call like?
27:13Oh my goodness.
27:14When she said, hey guys, I know who- not only do I know who you are but I want you on
27:18the team.
27:19Talk to me about it.
27:20Very amazing.
27:21So we started with our YouTube covers really.
27:24That was when we really started getting traction from people.
27:28And people really started listening to our covers.
27:31And this one cover we did in particular, Pretty Hurts by her, it went viral really.
27:37We noticed that people really started to like this one more than all of the others.
27:41And then one day we got an email from Parkwood, her team, and they were like, oh my gosh,
27:46you guys are amazing.
27:47Can Bea post this video on all her socials?
27:50Wow.
27:51And are you guys signed?
27:52We were like freaking out.
27:53We were.
27:54We were jumping for joy.
27:55Why are they asking us if we're signed?
27:57We were like trying to read into it.
27:58Like, ooh.
27:59And then two days later we got the call that Bea wanted to sign us.
28:04So it was just so surreal, just a whirlwind.
28:07I know.
28:08It's such a dream come true.
28:09And it's crazy how the universe works because my sister and I, our paths crossed with her
28:13when we were really young.
28:14Oh, wow.
28:15When I was three, the Fighting Temptations, the movie, I played her.
28:20And so my sister and I.
28:21Stop it.
28:22We were at the red carpets with her and crawling under people's feet and we saw pictures.
28:26So does she remember you from when?
28:27No.
28:28After we told her she freaked out.
28:29Did you tell her that was your full circle moment and that it was meant to be and you
28:32claimed it?
28:33Yeah.
28:34I may not have said all that but that's how I envision that.
28:35I know.
28:36And like we're so into how everything just comes right back around.
28:38So it was crazy.
28:39That is awesome.
28:40I know.
28:41That's a great story.
28:43Now how involved is she in your creative process as you guys develop your new music?
28:46Right.
28:47She is so very involved and what's so great about it is that she lets us lead the way with
28:52our music.
28:53Of course she gives her opinions and stuff but it's so great that we have our creative freedom
28:57that we do because in so many in this music industry so many artists aren't given that
29:02freedom.
29:03Right.
29:04So we're so blessed and happy with that.
29:05I know.
29:06And can you tell me a little bit about your latest EP?
29:07Yes.
29:08Oh I'm so excited on Friday and it comes out and we've been working on it for so long.
29:14What's this called?
29:15It's called Sugar Symphony.
29:16Sugar Symphony.
29:17Oh okay Harmony.
29:18Sugar Symphony.
29:19And you know it's called Sugar Symphony because my sister and I we love the sweet harmonies and
29:25the melodies but then we also love the really hard beats and it comes together so perfectly
29:30like a symphony.
29:31So Sugar Symphony and we're so happy for the world to hear it and we're happy to put art
29:36out because it's our way that we express ourselves and we can't wait you know.
29:40I'm so happy for you guys.
29:42Y'all are such lovely young women.

30:18Here is Avery Wilson performing Purple Rain.
30:20I'm your host Dana Blair and I'll see you next week.
30:43You never meant to cause you any sorrow.
30:51Never meant to cause you any pain.
30:59I only want to one time see you laughing.
31:05I only want to see you laughing in the purple rain, purple rain, purple rain.
31:22Purple rain, purple rain, purple rain, purple rain.
31:37I only want to see you laughing in the purple rain.
31:49I never want to be your wicked lover.
31:56Said I only want to be some type of friend.
32:03Oh, mm-hmm.
32:08Hey, I could never, never steal you from another.
32:16But it's a shame our friendship had to end.
32:23Purple rain, purple rain, purple rain, purple rain, purple rain.
32:43Yeah.
32:46Yeah.
32:48Whoo.
32:53I only want to see you bathing in that purple rain.
32:55I only want to see you bathing in that purple rain.
33:00Honey, I know, I know times will change.
33:04And we all need someone to look into, yeah, that needs you too.
33:16You say you want a leader, but you can't seem to make up your mind.
33:27I think you need to close it, close it, baby, while I lead you to the purple rain.
33:37Purple rain, purple rain, purple rain, purple rain.
33:49Purple rain, purple rain, yeah, yeah, yeah.
34:01I only want to see you bathing in that purple rain.
34:15Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
34:31Purple rain.
34:36Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
