The Getaway with Amanda Seales

00:00Grenada is pronounced Grenada, not Granada.
00:03No, it's never Granada, like nada.
00:06Nada on Granada.
00:12Jamaica is not the only Caribbean island.
00:14So like a lot of times when they hear
00:15like a West Indian accent, it'll be like,
00:17oh, are you Jamaican?
00:18You're Jamaican mom, right?
00:19And you're like, I need you to stop.
00:21Grenada, the Spice Island, is the birthplace of my mother.
00:25It is a home of my own.
00:27I have citizenship here.
00:29And it's a place that I am very deeply connected to,
00:33like blood wise, just it's my happy place.
00:37It's my favorite place in the world.
00:39And it's a very integral part of who I am as a person.
00:43Grenada is an island of revolutionaries.
00:45We are a small island of big talent.
00:47Just as much as I am Black American
00:50by connection to my father,
00:52I am Grenadian by connection to my mother.
00:54And that duality is an incredibly important part
00:57of what makes me.
00:59Let me be the first to tell some of you.
01:01I think that when I say small island,
01:03I mean that for there being such little surface,
01:07we have put out so much in terms of our contribution
01:10to the arts, entertainment, athleticism, et cetera.
01:14The beach for a moment felt like I was giving you
01:22Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition,
01:24which is not necessarily like my wheelhouse,
01:27but I feel like I gave you, I did what I could.
01:29Just for the record, it's very difficult to be sexy on the sand.
01:32So I know some people would think that that's silly,
01:35but try it.
01:36Because it's just unwieldy.
01:37It's unwieldy.
01:38It's unwieldy.
01:39It's unwieldy.
01:40You know, the thing about Grenada is it's so small
01:43that like you're just, you're seeing everybody you know.
01:46And being on Danny's boat, you know, Danny's like, you know,
01:50you're doing good, man.
01:51You're coming up.
01:52Because every time I'm on that boat,
01:53it seems like my life has gotten more advanced
01:56and more elevated.
01:57We are at the Coronage, and we are shooting Amanda
02:00in Valentino in her hometown.
02:02It's a great moment.
02:04I was in a Valentino, and I was, you know,
02:08with the flag of Grenada.
02:09I mean, people were like, you look like the queen of Grenada.
02:13And I'm like, no, because I'm like,
02:15you know, you look like the queen of Grenada.
02:18And I'm like, no, because I don't know what I'm doing.
02:22I'm like, no, because we would never have royalty in here.
02:24But we don't believe in that BS.
02:26Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
02:28Yeah, I did, I did, I did, I did.
02:33The pink outfit was by a black designer, Christopher John
02:36Rogers.
02:36And you know, I think especially in this time
02:38where we're seeing like big, very known, luxurious brands
02:42that are making missteps in terms of how they represent
02:45black folks, et cetera, it's really dope to be able to like show
02:48black designers that are at that level as well.
02:52The second look was this red, very gone with the wind,
02:56fabulous look.
02:58And the third was the nutmeg number from Finoel.
03:01All of this was at Belmont estate, which is very longstanding
03:05estate that's dedicated to cocoa and nutmeg production.
03:09And they make their own chocolate and their family
03:11because that is my aunt's, that's her place.
03:15I would say my favorite look today would have been Finoel's
03:21nutmeg get up.
03:23You know, nutmeg is the emblem of Grenada.
03:27It's on our flag.
03:28And for a long time, it was our main export.
03:30Everyone in Grenada basically puts nutmeg in everything,
03:32even in barbecue sauce.
03:33It's just a part of the culture.
03:36So to not only be wearing the nutmeg, but also be wearing the work
03:39of a Grenadian designer was, you know, just very like near and dear.
03:47For me, getting to do a photo shoot in Grenada is an exciting experience.
03:52I want people to see more of Grenada.
03:55For me, getting to shoot here and being able to at least bring
03:58Grenada into other people's consciousness is interesting and exciting.
04:02I hope that people take a second to explore Grenada even further
04:06and the contributions that we have made to the world culturally and artistically,
04:10but also to Black American culture and Black American revolution.
04:25I want people to see more of Grenada than anything else.
04:27I want people to see more of Grenada,
04:30but also to help people with needing to get to the world culturally.
04:33That is what I want to see and next to me.
04:38I'm the boss.
04:38Because I'm the boss.
04:39When I'm the boss is the group of Grenada.
04:43I'm the boss.
04:44What I want to see a friend of Grenada.
04:46I want people to see more of them.
04:48But clearly, some people say,
04:49and these people say,
04:51well, I want people to know the world.
04:52I want people to know the world and I want people to be your friends.
