00:00Now I'm beyond thrilled to have our guest joining me in studio, a soul siren, your favorite Vine star, the supreme Twitter clapback queen, and the host of the 2015 Soul Train Awards, airing November 29th on BET and Centric, Miss Erica Badu. How you doing?
00:16I'm awesome. How are you? I'm fabulous. I'm exquisite. You're exquisite. I like that. Thank you so very, very much for joining us. I'm super excited to have you here in studio.
00:23Thank you. Thank you for having me. Thank you. So this year for the 2015 Soul Train Awards, you're not just the host, but you're also the associate producer?
00:31Yeah, I'm producing along with Jesse Collins' company, you know, just writing and formatting some of my own things. So I'm able to see my funny crystallized in front of an audience, and that's exciting. Yeah.
00:49So do you think we'll see maybe some more production work and maybe some directing in Erica Badu's future?
00:54Well, yeah, hopefully. I've directed all my videos, you know, up till now. And love being behind the camera just as much as in front of it. Yeah, so. Awesome. Definitely.
01:06Definitely. We'll be hearing any of your new music coming up on the show because we heard you drop the Hotline Bling remix.
01:11Yeah. Do you have any new music or anything that we'll hear on the Soul Train Awards from you?
01:15On the Soul Train Awards, I might do just a little bit, you know, of something from the mixtape, yes.
01:21Okay. All right. Okay. Now we have a super fan on the line who cannot wait to talk to you.
01:27Okay. All right.
01:28Caller, what's your name and where are you calling from?
01:31Hello. This is Denise from New York, New York. What up?
01:35What's up, Denise?
01:37Hi, Miss Badu. I love you so much and I'm so grateful for everything you give us.
01:42Love you back.
01:44My question for you is your remix to the Hotline Bling was, you know, so refreshing, dope, per usual.
01:51And I wanted to know what was your message behind it? And do you think you could make Drake put down his phone?
01:58Oh, that's two questions.
02:01She got a two for one in there. She slipped it in.
02:03Well, Hotline Bling, I just did that because it was Big Mike's birthday and it was his favorite song.
02:13And I just kind of, you know, went to the studio and did it with my production partner, Zach Witness.
02:19And it came out to be, you know, really cool.
02:22And I just posted it up with no announcement on my SoundCloud.
02:28And it took off like wildfire.
02:29It took off like wildfire, which inspired me to do a whole mixtape.
02:34Yeah.
02:35I love that. That's one thing you have to love about social media.
02:37You get that instant feedback and that spread and that love.
02:39Yeah, man. It's social evolution, definitely.
02:42Now, Drake has even rapped about the fact that y'all are friends, that he's come by your house, you've given him relationship advice.
02:48Yeah.
02:49So what's the tea? Like what kind of advice do you give, say, your friends on relationships?
02:53It just depends on what it is. You know, we give each other advice, you know.
02:58More than anything, we listen to one another.
03:00Which is important. Very important.
03:01Yeah. And if there is something that needs to be said, you know, of course, it's our own opinion.
03:08But, you know, for the most part, we just kind of try to let each other live and experience.
03:14And that's a powerful thing in itself because sometimes you find friends or family members don't want to let you do you or be you.
03:19Yeah.
03:20And they want to try to kind of shape and shift things.
03:22Sure.
03:23So that's a good thing.
03:24Now, Shonda Rhimes recently sat down with Oprah.
03:26She has this big book out now, Shonda does, called The Year of Yes.
03:29Okay. All right.
03:30And she talks about her revelations and opening herself up and saying yes to more things.
03:33Sure.
03:34So when she was speaking with Oprah, they would talk about how they both decided they never wanted to get married.
03:38Okay.
03:39Do you have any thoughts or opinions on that, on marriage, on whether or not you want to get married or that choice for women?
03:44No. No, I don't have any strong opinions on it.
03:47I think, you know, when you fall in love with someone, the goal is to be together forever.
03:52Right.
03:53Ever, ever.
03:54Forever, ever?
03:55Forever.
03:56You know, and you know, you just have to, when we're learning and learning ourselves and learning how to be with someone and share space, you never know what happens.
04:07And I think when you meet someone who has the right chemistry for you, I'm so happy, you know, for people that do that.
04:15I mean, I think that, you know, finding a life partner is an amazing thing in this world, you know.
04:23I encourage that, too.
04:24Or I encourage it, you know, when it's time to go.
04:26Got to go.
04:27Follow your heart.
04:28No matter what it is.
04:29It's the heart that kind of tells you which way to go.
04:32Which way to go?
04:33Mm-hmm.
04:34.
