Transcript
00:00Let's check out a little bit more of what Common had to say.
00:06Tell us a little bit about your foundation, which is Common Ground Foundation.
00:11Yes, well, I mean, it's my passion to inspire the youth and to give back to where I've come from and wherever, you know, where there's people in need.
00:22And I start with our community, with black people.
00:25So, you know, especially black and Latino people, I'm very passionate about being able to give back to us.
00:34And I started my foundation because it's called Common Ground Foundation.
00:40And what we do is use creative arts to inspire young people to help achieve their dreams.
00:46We use and enlighten them through these programs we have to help them just to see what they can do, to see what they can achieve.
00:52And we also have mentorship programs to help them just expose them to new things.
00:58I always wanted to do that because my mother was a teacher.
01:02She was an educator.
01:03And I got to see her.
01:05Yeah, give thanks.
01:07I got to see her contribute to other people's lives in a real pure way because she was passionate and is passionate about bettering society and bettering youth and helping our young black people.
01:19Well, seeing that made me feel like I should be doing that also.
01:23And growing up around that inspired me.
01:25And that's where Common Ground stemmed from.
01:27And that's where my philanthropic work and my heart to give to the people, it starts there.
01:32That's so dope that you were inspired by your mother and you continue to inspire.
01:37Now, speaking of where you come from and your mom, you are from Chicago.
01:42We are in New Orleans.
01:44Both places have incredible food, right, you guys?
01:46Yes, yes.
01:47Yes, you do.
01:48But you are known to be a vegetarian.
01:51Is that true?
01:52Well, no, I'm not a vegetarian.
01:53I eat fish.
01:55Vegetarian.
01:55And seafood.
01:56So I love it down here.
01:58So you can get down with the gumbo?
02:01I get down with what?
02:02Can you get down with gumbo?
02:03Yeah, I get down with gumbo as long as it ain't got no pork in it.
02:06I don't eat pork.
02:07I used to eat pork, but I got over the pork, so I don't do that.
02:10My mother used to fix a great gumbo too, man.
02:13Really?
02:13She learned how to do it a little bit without pork now.
02:16But, you know, I love to eat.
02:19Coming from Chicago, we got great restaurants, and we always try to find good places to come
02:24eat down here in New Orleans.
02:26And I always like good home-cooked meals too, so if a lady can cook, that's even better.
02:32Ah.
02:33Any of the ladies out here can cook?
02:35Any?
02:36No?
02:37I mean, good.
02:38Real good.
02:39I love it.
02:42All right, another question is, now, one of the things that I think is so awesome is
02:47that you seem to be super laid back and chill.
02:50What do you do to have a good time?
02:52Like, outside of the work?
02:53Outside of...
02:54Oh, yeah.
02:55Well, I love going out to eat, like, with friends or somebody that's good company.
02:59There's a theme.
03:00There's a common theme going on here.
03:02Food and eating.
03:04I love to go out with good company and just conversation.
03:07I love going to the movies.
03:09I like going out with a lot of friends to go, like, bowling and do stuff like that.
03:13I love going to the ocean and water, like, being around water and enjoying that.
03:19I love riding just with somebody I like and just listening to good music.
03:24I'm not mad at that at all.
03:25Because then we get to conversate and have the music in the background, and it's just like
03:29we connecting, you know?
03:31What's that good music?
03:32What's your choice?
03:33I mean, it varies.
03:34It varies.
03:35It could be anything from Prince to Minnie Ripperton to Fela to...
03:40I listen to John Coltrane.
03:43It could be Mary J. Blige.
03:44It could be, you know, it's like whatever the mood is, you know, I play that Roberta Flack.
03:51All that good music.
03:53Amen.
03:53So dope.
03:55Wow.
03:56So proud of you, and we just want to thank you so much for being here, you guys.
04:00Give it up one more time, you guys, for calming.
04:02Thanks, y'all.
04:03Thanks, Samson.
04:03Sprinkling some wisdom on us right here.
04:05Thank you so much.
04:06We so appreciate it.
04:07Appreciate you.
04:08Great job.
04:09Peace, y'all.
04:09Thank you, guys.
04:10Thank you so much to Adrienne and Common for stopping by the Samsung Galaxy Experience.
04:19Coming up, we have Matthew Newman, who took it to the streets right here in New Orleans'
04:23very own French Quarter.
04:24Let's take a look.
04:36The party is just getting kicked off right here on Bourbon Street.
04:39I am Matthew Newman, your Samsung brand ambassador, and your man on the street.
04:43I got two beautiful young ladies who are getting the party started right.
04:47They're trying to get the party started.
04:49Ladies, what's your name?
04:50Tyler.
04:50Where are you from, Tyler?
04:51I'm from Chicago.
04:52Shawtown.
04:53Shawtown.
04:54Shawtown.
04:55Shawtown.
04:56Shawtown.
04:57I'm going to show you a picture, and I want you to tell me who this is.
05:00Once you tell me who this is, I want you to sing a song from them, all right?
05:04Who is this group?
05:07Boyzeman.
05:08Who is it?
05:08Boyzeman.
05:10Mama.
05:13Mama, you heard that?
05:14Mama, you know I love you.
05:17Guys, that's how we do it.
05:18What's your name?
05:19Aisha.
05:20Aisha, where are you from?
05:21Florida, Jacksonville.
05:22Keisha.
05:23Keisha, where are you from?
05:24El Paso, Texas.
05:26EPT.
05:26I got a question for you.
05:27I'm going to show you a picture, and I want you to guess who it is, all right?
05:29If you're ready, say I'm ready.
05:30I'm ready.
05:31Who is this group?
05:34SWB.
05:35SWB.
05:36I get so weak in the knees.
05:38I can hardly speak.
05:40I lose all control.
05:42I want you to stay with me.
05:44By my side, I swallow my pride.
05:47Your love is so weak.
05:49Can't explain why your love makes me weak.
05:53Guys, I just can't explain how their love makes me weak.
05:56Right here in the heart of the French Quarter.
05:58What's your name?
05:59Michelle, New Jersey.
06:00Carol, Roselle, New Jersey.
06:02Kimberly, I'm from Patterson, New Jersey.
06:04They're all from New Jersey, and NJ is in the house.
06:07And the question I have for these young ladies is, in what country where Samsung started?
06:13Okay, yeah, 10 minutes.
06:15Should y'all see that jaw drop?
06:18Japan?
06:20Japan.
06:22China.
06:24China.
06:26Korea.
06:28Korea is the right answer.
06:31Yes.
06:32Tell me this.
06:33I got college education.
06:34You got your college education?
06:36Shout out that university.
06:37And I got a Samsung phone.
06:38Oh, and she got a Samsung phone.
06:40Yep.
06:41What's your name?
06:41Hi, I'm Alex Flores.
06:43Alex Flores, where are you from?
06:45Santa Cruz, California.
06:47Here goes your question.
06:47Shake it on.
06:48It'll lose for a second.
06:49If you could give Usher, Usher, one confession, what would that confession be?
06:55Ooh, that he is one of the most beautiful faces that I have ever seen.
06:59Keep on making those love songs, baby.
07:03Beautiful, chocolatey goodness.
07:04I don't know what else to say about him.
07:06I love you.
07:07That's amazing.
07:10Usher has a beautiful chocolate face.
07:13I'm Matthew Newman, your Samsung brand ambassador and man on the street.
07:18We'll see you on the next one.
07:20Coming up, we have Kelly Rowland and Frank Gadsden stopping by the Samsung Galaxy Experience.
07:25They had their auditions, found a little talent in NOLA, and had a very special celebrity guest stop by.
07:31Take a look.
07:32We held an audition yesterday here in New Orleans.
07:36No one knew what it was about.
07:39It was a secret.
07:39A lot of ladies from New Orleans in this area showed up for the audition.
07:44And what the audition is for, they're the first ladies that we're going to consider for this group.
07:50Okay?
07:51Now, we're going everywhere else in the U.S.
07:53And one more thing, if any of you know anybody that can sing age 17 to 27, let me know when I get off this stage.
08:06Okay?
08:07Okay?
08:08Because I truly believe people in the music business don't look under every rug.
08:15Don't look under every door.
08:17Don't go to every church.
08:19Don't go to every high school.
08:21And that's what this young lady and myself are going to do.
08:24We're going to even look under the train tracks, you know?
08:27We're looking for stars because there has to be another Michael Jackson.
08:31There has to be another Kelly Rowland.
08:33There has to be another Beyoncé.
08:36There has to be another Usher.
08:38Because black folks are talented.
08:41Can I get a hand for that, please?
08:43All right?
08:44So, without further ado, he is pretty freaking hot.
08:52There are no words for this man.
08:54He needs no introduction.
08:56Ladies and gentlemen, Trey Songz.
08:58What's up?
09:00Hey.
09:01How y'all doing?
09:10Everybody good?
09:12So, Trey is like a brother to me, and he's here to help me and Frank in this search.
09:19So, you got to be honest.
09:21I'm ready.
09:22Here we go.
09:23Introduce yourself.
09:24Come on.
09:25Hello.
09:25My name is Alexis Danielle Greenville.
09:28How y'all doing?
09:30All right.
09:30I'm going to take it back a little bit.
09:32Is that all right?
09:33All right.
09:34Hey, I heard it through the grapevine.
09:39Oh, and brother, brother, brother.
09:42Y'all got some singers in New Orleans.
09:44Yeah.
09:45Yeah.
09:51Goody, goody.
09:52So, you met someone, and now you know how it feels.
09:57Hey, baby.
09:58Ooh.
09:59I was so foolish to ever leave your side.
10:05Searching for what was right.
10:07Stop.
10:07Stop.
10:07I'm sorry.
10:08Now, I know a little more about her.
10:11She taught herself to sing.
10:13She even said she's a sinner.
10:15She didn't learn in church.
10:16I'm sorry.
10:17No.
10:17I'm playing.
10:18I asked her, did she go to church?
10:20She said no, because most people learn in church, right?
10:23Okay?
10:24So, this is a natural singer to us.
10:26This is the kind of thing that Kelly and I are looking for, because we can develop her,
10:30and we can groom her, and she got some pretty-ass black skin.
10:35Oh, my gosh.
10:36She's gorgeous.
10:36First of all, it takes someone with a lot of courage to come out here in front of so many
10:41people and sing and showcase your talent.
10:45So, I acknowledge that above anything, and I'm so happy that you all came.
10:49I'm so happy that you're representing for the N.O.
10:52very, very freaking well.
10:54And I look forward to seeing your faces again very soon.
10:59So, I feel like we have a gym in New Orleans.
11:01I do.
11:02Trey?
11:02Well, I would just like to say, it seems like my mic is very loud.
11:06I would like to say, as Kelly said, it takes a lot of courage to get up here, especially
11:10sing a song a cappella.
11:12It's noise all over the place.
11:13It's people all over the place.
11:14So, once again, could you make some noise for these ladies?
11:17They are very, very brave.
11:18And, you know, when you have a dream, nobody believes it initially, but the dream is for
11:25you.
11:26So, if you believe it in your heart, no matter what even happens here today, this is not
11:30the end of the road.
11:31This is the beginning of the road.
11:32There are so many opportunities for you if you believe in yourself, and that goes for
11:35each and every one of y'all, too.
11:36Give me a hug.
11:37Come on.
11:37We're done.
11:39Yeah.
11:39Perfect.
11:41That audition looked like a lot of fun.
11:43I'm kind of upset that I wasn't considered, but Kelly Rowland took a few extra moments to
11:48stop by and chat with Adrienne Bayonne, have a little girl chat, and discuss her new show.
11:53Check it out.
11:55And Miss Kelly Rowland!
11:58Give it up, you guys.
12:00The missus.
12:03What's up, what's up, what's up?
12:06Oh, my God.
12:07Yes, you are right here.
12:08I guess this is you.
12:10Hello, everybody.
12:13Are you guys as excited to see Kelly as I am?
12:15This is my girl.
12:16I'm excited to see all of you.
12:19Oh, my God.
12:19So we have so much to talk about.
12:21Yes, we do.
12:22What are you doing here at Essence Festival?
12:24Well, earlier today, a part of the Samsung experience was actually about myself and Frank
12:30Gatz and finding new talent.
12:32Yes.
12:33We have put together this great idea to form a girl group.
12:37We know all of our girl groups, as you guys know.
12:40Hello.
12:40You are the ultimate.
12:42Like, come on.
12:43Destiny's Child, you guys.
12:44The ultimate girl group.
12:45I'm just saying, hello.
12:46Ever.
12:47This one knows about it as well.
12:49And I think you completely understand the dynamic of being in a group and finding really important
12:54group members and just making sure we have another generation of a girl group.
12:59There hasn't been one to really, like, have an impact.
13:03And myself and Frank, that is our soul's purpose right now.
13:07So we're so excited about it.
13:09With BET.
13:10So, yes.
13:10So, it's a show.
13:11It is a show.
13:12It's a television show.
13:13It'll be shot documentary style.
13:15It's not like, you know, the X Factor's American Idol.
13:18This is on our terms.
13:19And it's the way the record labels used to go out and actually find the talent.
13:24This isn't a cattle call.
13:26It's us, like, going to you and saying, girl, you know such and such from such and such church.
13:31Do you know it?
13:32Can she sing?
13:33How old is she?
13:34Do you think she'll want to be in a group?
13:35It's actually being that into the project, which is what we've been doing.
13:40I'm very excited.
13:41Yes.
13:42Yes.
13:42That deserves an applause.
13:44That absolutely deserves an applause.
13:46And I love that you're doing that.
13:47So, what was happening here earlier today?
13:50Today we saw, I think it was seven or eight girls.
13:53Okay.
13:54Frank actually looked at them yesterday.
13:56I got a chance to see them today.
13:58So, I was just as surprised as the audience was today.
14:01And I think we found something special in New Orleans.
14:05What I'd like to do is find some girls, like, in certain places.
14:10You know what I mean?
14:10And have their hometown be completely behind them.
14:14I remember the way Houston was behind us.
14:16New Orleans was behind us.
14:18The whole Southern belt was really behind us.
14:20And we really appreciated that.
14:22So, it'd be great to find a Southern girl, maybe a West Coast girl, Midwest girl.
14:26We'll see what happens.
14:28But...
14:28How would you guys feel about that?
14:30Right?
14:31Somebody repping New Orleans?
14:32I think that would be super dope.
14:34Absolutely.
14:35So, are they going to be picked one by one?
14:38And how important is the chemistry between the girls?
14:41The chemistry, to me, is the most important thing.
14:43I have a little chart that I've written down.
14:47For different challenges, I'll say, that I want to exercise with the girls to see how they really maneuver in a group.
14:56Because it takes a special person to be in a group.
14:59It's really important to be able to know exactly what you bring to the table.
15:05Because then, if you don't, you're going to be jealous of Sally or whoever.
15:09Because you feel like something about you is lacking.
15:12And that's not the way this system should be set up at all.
15:15Because, if anything, I want them to be great role models to a newer generation, to other women out there.
15:22That's what this is all about.
15:23It's about us as women completely empowering and uplifting each other.
15:28And having a dang-gone good time while we're doing it.
15:31Yes, absolutely.
15:31So, I'm excited about that.
15:33I love that.
15:33Now, you always look absolutely beautiful.
15:36Don't you guys agree?
15:37Thank you very much.
15:38I love that you have your own style.
15:40You do your own thing.
15:42What would you tell young women about finding their own personal style?
15:46I have been through everything.
15:48I can't even tell you.
15:49I have, let me see.
15:50I remember one week I was Cameron Diaz from Something About Mary.
15:54Another week I was Dorothy Dandridge.
15:56Because I wanted to have that whole style, that era of style.
16:00Another week I think I was stuck in the 70s.
16:05Yes, I think it's trial by error.
16:08You have to see exactly what works with you.
16:10You know, what kind of hair you want to rock.
16:13You best believe I match my hair with my outfits.
16:15Like, it all has to tell a story.
16:18And that's what it's about.
16:19I think that, you know, the way you dress and what you put into yourself, that's your art.
16:23That's your self-expression.
16:25And, you know, it helps when you go in for your job interviews.
16:28When you go out on that first date.
16:30When you have this sort of chemistry with your other girlfriend, you know, ooh, she got cute pants on all the time.
16:36I'm going to go shop on her.
16:37Or whatever it is.
16:38You know what I mean?
16:39It just, it's a part of a chemistry.
16:41It's the way you express yourself.
16:42It's one of the most beautiful things I think about us there is.
16:44I'm not a mom yet, but even talking to you, what is that like?
16:49And what has that experience been like for you being a mom?
16:51It's so cliche and it's so corny.
16:55But that is the, he is the greatest thing to ever happen to me.
16:59He really is.
17:00I don't even remember life, like, before him.
17:03But he's my best little friend.
17:06He really, really is.
17:07I'm just grateful that God trusted me to bring his life into this world.
17:12So I just, it's my duty to make sure I train him up the way he should go and continue to pray over my baby.
17:21A personal highlight of mine of this 2015 Essence Festival, the queen, Mary J. Blige, stopped by to have a chat with moi.
17:29Take a look.
17:33Welcome back, Essence Live.
17:37I'm Dana Blair, live from the Samsung stage with the queen of hip-hop and R&B, Miss Mary J. Blige.
17:47How are you?
17:48I'm great.
17:48How are you?
17:49I'm fabulous.
17:50You look beautiful.
17:50Thank you so much for joining us here at the Samsung stage.
17:53Thanks for having me.
17:54All right.
17:54I'm just going to go ahead and jump on into it.
17:56Congratulations on your 13th album, The London Sessions.
18:03We have grieved with you, grown with you, rejoiced with you.
18:07What message did you want to convey in this album to your fans?
18:11I mean, for me, just change.
18:14You know, I just needed something to do something different.
18:17For about 20-something years, I had been consistent in R&B and hip-hop and, you know, just very consistent with my fans.
18:25But this was something completely different I did.
18:27I went all the way across the seas to do an album and to do something completely different.
18:33You're speaking to a different part of the artist that's in you.
18:36Yes.
18:36I needed to feed that because, I mean, I'm going to always be Mary.
18:40I'm going to always be hip-hop and R&B and, you know, just what we love.
18:43But I needed to challenge myself somewhere else just to see if I could do something else.
18:48Definitely.
18:49I understand that.
18:50And there are so many artists that have come out of the U.K., most currently the Coldplay, Sam Smith, but the Beatles, Rolling Stones.
18:58What is it from a creator's perspective that brought you to the U.K.?
19:03Was it something about maybe the artists that came from there or what called you there?
19:07I think it's the music.
19:09Ever since Soul of Soul would keep on moving and Brand New Heavies, like Let's Go All the Way Back, New Sins.
19:17And then you have all of the Amy Winehouse and Sam Smiths and Disclosures.
19:22And it's the fact that they allow the artists to just be artists, like Chaka Khan is a huge star in London.
19:28She's not an old singer.
19:30You know what I mean?
19:31So I think they allow people to just be artists and they don't hold them back.
19:36They're all about the music.
19:38And I hate to cut into your question about Gladsenberry, but the thing I love about Gladsenberry is that we got a chance to see so many people come together in rain and in mud just for music.
19:51They really, really loved the music.
19:53They stood outside.
19:54They had mud up to their knees.
19:55They had teepees and tents.
19:57So they really, really loved the music.
19:59And that's what made me go over there.
20:01And you've been touring a lot.
20:03You mentioned Gladsenberry.
20:04You're now here with us here in New Orleans.
20:06How do you stay centered and focused while on the road with such a busy schedule?
20:12I mean, my centering is the mornings.
20:15And the morning is prayer.
20:16It's meditation.
20:17It's focus, getting my spirit right so I can deal with all of this.
20:22Because there's so much going on that you need to be centered and one with God so you can get on.
20:31Here at Essence, we've been talking a lot about the transition in Hollywood where so many African-American women are breaking down doors, going behind the lens and that sort of thing.
20:40And you yourself are a pioneer in the music industry, taking such a big footprint in a male-dominated industry.
20:51Do you consider yourself a pioneer?
20:54I mean, yeah, at this point, yes.
20:56And the transition now, seeing more women in the space as producers and more writers, more artists.
21:02What has it been like seeing the industry grow from your perspective?
21:06It's been amazing from watching it grow from my perspective because there are so many artists that are pieces of Mary J. Blige.
21:14Yes.
21:15That makes me smile.
21:16It's like, wow, look what I've birthed.
21:19Yes.
21:19Yes, you have.
21:20It's amazing to watch.
21:22Yeah.
21:22So I have to also ask you, you've been busy doing AMFAR, Global Citizens, Earth Day.
21:29Knowing that it's for a good cause, does it add a little something, something, something, if you will, to the performance?
21:35Yeah, it makes you more passionate because it's about saving lives.
21:38And these people, you know, they're raising money for research, you know, and AIDS, when here we don't even speak about it anymore.
21:45And they're raising billions of dollars while people are still dying, you know, they're still talking about it.
21:52And so it makes me very excited and very happy and passionate to sing for AMFAR.
21:57No, thank you for that.
21:59And we consider you family here at Essence.
22:01You've performed multiple times here at the festival.
22:04What keeps you coming back year after year?
22:06I mean, just Essence.
22:08They keep calling.
22:10We won't leave you alone.
22:11So I keep coming back.
22:13We won't leave you alone, basically.
22:15And the fans, the experience with the fans, when you give them what they want, it's priceless, the gift in return, the energy.
22:23You can't buy that anywhere.
22:25And you leave so full, you know, fulfilled with all the energy from the fans.
22:30And I have to ask you, I'm a Louisiana girl.
22:33I know whenever I'm back in town from New York, first thing I do is eat.
22:36Catch up with my family, eat.
22:37What's the first thing you do when you're here at NOLA?
22:39Eat.
22:41Go to Mother's.
22:43Yes, yes, yes.
22:44What do the good people of Essence Live have to look forward to for your show tonight?
22:50Oh, they're just going to have a good time.

22:53We're going to do what we do.
22:54We're going to have a just get ready to do what we do.
22:58That's it.
22:59And I have to say, I've seen you perform in those stilettos.
23:02You work it.
23:03Right.
23:03How do you stay in shape and prepare for a show?
23:05I mean, your energy is here.
23:07Well, I work out.
23:09I made training a part of my everyday life.
23:11It's like a job now.
23:12So I train every day.
23:15And I take when I'm on the road.
23:17I only train on off days because I have an hour and 45 minute set.
23:21So I can't train on that day, but I can train the day after.
23:25But when I'm home, every day.
23:28Wow.
23:28Yes.
23:29So that's how I do it.
23:30And is it always like high intensity or?
23:32It's high intensity in the beginning of the week.
23:35And then there's cardio at the end of the week.
23:37So I'm doing weights, I'm doing cardio, I'm doing legs, I'm doing glutes, I'm doing back, I'm doing thigh.
