00:00A friend keeps telling you what he did last night
00:09How many girls he kissed, how many he liked
00:13And you try to remember that there's no way you could ever be friends
00:19But now you're
00:23You're looking like you really like him, like him
00:27You're feeling like you kinda miss him, miss him
00:32And now you're acting like you love him, love him
00:37And now you're dancing like you need him, need him
00:41This is my first Essence Festival
00:44And it's my first festival in America, full stop
00:47So I had a really fun time introducing new music
00:50And the crowd was fantastic
00:53I mean I grew up in a tiny village in Scotland
00:56So having an identity for me, it meant so much
01:00Being able to have women in the States really inspiring me
01:05So my dad introduced me to Nina Simone when I was about 9 or 10
01:09And Lauren Hill, Tracy Chapman
01:12All these women that really paid attention to the lyric
01:17And to the poetry of what they were doing
01:20My essence, I don't know
01:24I try and stay as creative as possible
01:26So I try and have a creative essence
01:28And I try and stay humble as much as I can
01:31So I try and combine that all
01:33And stay true to my art
