Transcript
00:00You are always so much fun every time I see you.
00:08Oh, thank you. Life is good. You got to have fun.
00:11Beautiful makeup, too. Thank you.
00:13I like that. Still that.
00:15So, I'm a parent and the other day we were sitting at home watching Martin and my kids were like,
00:21Oh my God, this show is so good.
00:23So, it's just so funny to introduce our generation to the next generation of Martin.
00:28It's just, it's still so funny.
00:30I can't believe people still watch it.
00:32We didn't, you know, we didn't know what we had when we were making it, you know?
00:36We just kind of was just going with the flow and just, you know, like, okay.
00:40We came to work. We came on set to have fun every day.
00:43And, you know, Martin, whatever, you know, he would go off script all the time.
00:47So, you just go where he's going. But we had a blast.
00:50But who knew it would be an iconic show like this?
00:53Like three, four channels.
00:55We never knew. But God is good, you know? God is good.
00:57God is good.
00:58We have the gorgeous Anika Nainu Rose. How are you?
01:01I'm great. Thank you.
01:02Yeah.
01:03You know, today we're honoring one of your co-stars, which is Oprah Winfrey.
01:08Well, you, you were a co-star.
01:09She was in Princess and the Frog.
01:11I was like, wait, wait, wait. All right.
01:13So, you know, just tell me about, you know, the meaning of this Black Women in a Hollywood event.
01:17It's not your first time. Just the feeling in the room.
01:20I think you can sort of see the feeling in the room.
01:23It's about joy.
01:24It's about being with your peers and celebrating them as opposed to pilot season, which we're in the middle of.
01:30And everything about that is the competition and trying to get into that room and, you know, be the best.
01:36And this is about celebrating the best in all of us.
01:39And it's, and it's joyous that way.
01:42Joyous is a great word.
01:43Yes.
01:44Yes.
01:45You know, what does it mean for you, Anika, to be a Black woman in Hollywood?
01:49You know, it means culling through a lot of words and looking for that gem.
01:56You know, it means seeing that other face across the room and knowing that it's probably only two of you in that moment
02:06and being happy to celebrate each other.
02:10And sometimes it means less.
02:13You know what I mean?
02:14Sometimes it means knowing that there are not going to be that many opportunities,
02:17but also enjoying the amazing things that can come your way.
02:23Honoree Alfre Woodard, who is being honored with the Vanguard Award.
02:28How are you?
02:29Hi, sweetie.
02:30And, you know, I'm from South Africa, and I know you and your husband have a personal love of the country.
02:34Yes.
02:35Where are you from?
02:36Johannesburg.
02:37Oh, Joburg.
02:38Yeah.
02:39What part?
02:40Plegari.
02:41Yeah.
02:42You know?
02:43I've been in South Africa a bunch of times.
02:44This woman has been everywhere, by the way.
02:45Friends in South Africa.
02:47Cool.
02:48You know, Vanguard is someone who leads the way and is sort of breaks boundaries.
02:53Do you often consider yourself someone like that?
02:56No.
02:58No.
02:59I kind of think Vanguard is the luck of the birthday draw.
03:02Really?
03:03Yeah.
03:04I was born before most of these girls.
03:07So I'm in the Vanguard.
03:09Lovely.
03:10You know, you've had an amazing, amazing career.
03:13And very steady.
03:14Like, you've continually worked.
03:16And, you know, we come into this room and a lot of times we hear women saying, you know,
03:20there's so much competition amongst black women in Hollywood.
03:23And I want to know from you, what is the feeling that you get when we're here celebrating?
03:27We're not talking about competition today.
03:28We're talking about celebrating each other's accomplishments.
03:31Well, you know what?
03:32I don't buy into the myth that we're in competition with each other.
03:39You know, most of us in this room have been given accolades like, oh, you are one of the finest actors ever.
03:47Are you one of the most profound or prolific producers or directors ever?
03:53We all have those kind of accolades.
03:56So as long as they're making movies, as long as they're making TV, then we should be working.
04:01You know, we can't buy into this idea that there's only three jobs and only $2 million, you know, to get our things done.
04:09You know, that's on them.
04:11So I also think of the fact, it's great for us to come together because then the media comes and they can show the business and the world
04:20that we have an endless well, a deep well of talent and experience.
04:26And so it points up the fact of how absent we are in the dominant culture in terms of the business.
04:33Yes.
04:34But also a friend of mine, a sister elder of mine once said, you know, the root of the word competition is in the Greek is to come together to petition.
04:44Wow.
04:45So you come together to lift up the standard.
04:48Yes.
04:49And so being among each other, we inspire each other.
04:54We push each other to the next point of perfection.
04:57And so that's always great.
04:59That is wonderful.
