00:00I feel like it's my job, like as an artist, to somewhat be a leader, you know?
00:03I know a lot of people, they say, you know, when they get famous,
00:06well, I didn't sign up to motivate anybody, but never when I was eight
00:09did I expect to, you know, inspire somebody at 17, you know?
00:12But it's just something that happened, and I just have to take whatever comes with it.
00:24Before I even had a song out, I was performing.
00:26I was, like, on a full-blown tour, you could say.
00:29It was probably, like, when I was, like, 7, 8, I started being known for my performances
00:33because I would, like, command a crowd, and it's not something that, you know, I practiced.
00:36It just happened organically.
00:37Like, when I was younger, I never used to be, like, I want to grow up and be a singer
00:40or anything of that sort.
00:42I didn't really come from a background of, like, my family professionally being in the business.
00:46So it was really weird for me to be the oddball out, but, you know,
00:50it's just something that I developed, and I've taken a strong suit to it,
00:53and I feel like a lot of people could say performing is one of my strong suits,
00:56and so I've definitely taken pride in that, and I take it serious.
00:59When it comes to, like, music, even though people have yet to hear my music,
01:03it's definitely something that we haven't heard from a female artist or female rapper,
01:08as people view me as, in a very long time.
01:10And we're in such a day and age now where it's a lot of microwave rap,
01:14where it's, like, if you want to hear love songs from an artist, you go to this artist.
01:18If you want to hear turnip songs, you go to this artist.
01:21If you want to hear, you know, introspective songs, you go to this artist.
01:25It's really rare that you'll find an artist that if you want to hear an introspective song,
01:28you go to track one.
01:29If you want to hear a love song, you go to track three.
01:31If you want to hear a turnip song, you go to track six, you know?
01:34So I feel like I'm one of those artists that have broadened the spectrum of bringing that back,
01:39and not just staying in a niche and following it.
01:41There's only been, like, one time in my career that I've ever thought of, like, quitting,
01:45or, like, have even come close to that thought.
01:47I've never, I've always been, like, this really optimistic kid.
01:49I've never tried to say this is not going to be my future.
01:52But it was one point, and it was earlier this year, too.
01:54I was at a point where I just really did not care.
01:56But it was, like, different things and different signs that God put in my life,
02:00and, like, just going through my DMs and my fans just giving me these long messages
02:04about how I inspired them.
02:06It'll be, like, an injustice to them to stop, you know what I'm saying?
02:09And my family is so proud of me.
02:11I've come so far along these years that it's like, why would I stop now, you know?
02:15I definitely intend to inspire girls.
02:20I feel like in the game we have a lot of, you know, the glitz and glamour female rappers.
02:27We have the, you know, the fun ratchet ones.
02:29But I don't feel like we have a representation in this era of, like, the everyday girl.
02:32So I feel like that's what I definitely want to represent.
02:35And not just in female rap, but in general.
02:37And on top of that, you know, I started, before I was rapping, my family's from Trinidad,
02:42so we have this genre called soca music.
02:44I got very big in soca and I always said that it wasn't mainstream enough to me.
02:47And I always felt like I was going to be that one to bridge the gap
02:50because I'm so young and I have so much time on my hands.
02:53And I appeal to both sides because I could jump into my little Trinidad, you know, accent.
02:57But then I also appeal to, you know, my Brooklyn side because that's where I grew up.
03:00So I definitely want to be the one to make soca music mainstream.
03:03That's one of the reasons why I started rapping.
03:05Because, you know, many are called but few are chosen.
03:08And not many people have gotten in the position that I'm in
03:10and I've barely even scratched the surface.
03:12So, you know, it's definitely a blessing to do what I do.
03:15My name is Young Devon and this is Behind My Magic.
